  • English - Welcome to Schony747 trams, planes and trains. This video features the new Melbourne Tram Route 58 tram terminus at West Coburg. The new terminus is long over due from an operational point of view and for the comfort and safety of both tram passengers and Yarra Trams operational staff and tram drivers. It's a huge upgrade and improvement.
    Not including some pre works, the new tram terminus at Melville Road and Bell St took about a week to build. The single track safety zone has been replaced with a modern low floor platform with a shelter on the actual stop which provides accessibility for the low floor trams. Drivers also have their own layup areas and other facilities at the stop that in the past were only accessible through an laneway away from the stop.
    The operational side of the new terminus is explained in the video. Surprisingly there were no Comeng Z3 trams. There were the usual B2 Class Tram and there seemed to be more than the average Siemens D1 Combino when I filmed this.

    Oh neat 👍 I just read an article this morning about the new terminus and was wondering what it looked like. The best timing for a video ever. Great explanations of how it works too. Looks really good and should work great for when the E Classes start running on the route 58 too.

      It looks really good. Once everyone gets used to it, it will work very smoothly.

    I remember back in the early 1970's, a girl was killed at this tram terminus. It wasn't by the tram either. She was crossing the road as the tram was pulling up. The tram hit a green (Drivers) clock card machine. It was a clock that punched some holes in a card to show what time the tram arrived at the terminus. Anyway....as she was crossing the road, this clock hit her in the head and she died instantly. I remember this as a kid.

      That's one in a million. The green clock was called the Bundy clock and they were widely used for both trams and buses

    As a regular user of this stop I must say that I prefer the old setup. The new stop is further from Bell Street, and there is nothing more frustrating than to see the arriving tram drop off its passengers, proceed to the lay off area and then a few minutes later return to the stop to pick up the passengers. It might work better for you chaps, but it certainly doesn't for the passenger.

      Fair enough. I think it works well for everyone but that's also my personal opinion.

    The walk from the bus stops of route 527 on Turner St, routes 513 and 903 on Bell St is now longer.

      By how much?

    • @sepruecom
      @sepruecom 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      a good 50 metres and an additional pedestrian crossing. If the lights of that crossing switch as... well as the Toorak Terminus ones do, you either jaywalk or miss your tram by waiting for a minute or two. Posting a policeman at that point would sure get the costs of the new stop back in within less than a week!

    So I'm guessing with the spring points that the wheel flanges on the arriving trams push the point blades into the correct position and they spring back once the wheel has passed?

      If you're referring to the trams in this video - Combino is made by Siemens and The B2 class Comeng / ABB.

    Seems strange in this high tech era drivers still have to manually change points. I notice at Riversdale Junction & Camberwell Junction sometimes drivers don't get out of the tram to change the points. Do some trams do this automatically? I know both these stops use both routes 70 & 75

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the initial opening. I'm not 100% sure but I'm assuming the setup will have signals similar to the route 96 setup at East Brunswick. It's also quite safe to have manual points here as the track is separated from the cars.

    • @Bobrogers99
      @Bobrogers99 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Schony747 While it's safe to change the points manually, it's not convenient when it raining! Why did they choose manual points instead of remotely from the tram?

    • @sepruecom
      @sepruecom 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      in general, there is a way for drivers to change points remotely from their cab on most points used by regular routes and some operational points as well.
      However, this remote change can fail, in that case the driver has to get out of his cab and change manually. Sometimes, the remote switching is turned off, then the drivers have to get out every time (we just had that at the old domain interchange a few weeks back, when the 58 trams turning into Park St had to change manually, and the next tram afterwards too).
      Also, many operational points (e.g. for depot runs) don't have that built in, so the drivers have to get out of their cab every single time, this is especially time-consuming at the end of peak times (when the peak runs go back to the depot) and in the evening (when many of the regular runs go back to the depot). Almost all the points along Glenferrie Rd (Rt. 16) are manual, and the drivers have to get out many times to switch back and forth.

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the first few months at East Brunswick points had to be changed manually in the terminus. When signalling went love, everything including the points went automatic.

    Are the toilets available to the public or are they strictly for tram drivers?

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drivers and operational staff only. Before the new stop, staff had to walk down a dark lane away from the stop.

    Melbourne got the same issue as Oslo. Trams share traffic with cars. Not a great solution.

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much with no traffic priority at traffic lights.

  • @barryneilsen6007
    @barryneilsen6007 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not so Brilliant. The passengers now have a long walk from Bell st to the tram. Not much fun on a cold wet winters day. At East Brunswick this layout works as it is a track extension not a cut back as here. Whoever designs these termini is a moron. Toorak terminus is now down a steep hill, very inconvenient for passengers transferring to Glenferrie Rd. services. There were much better options at both termini of the 58. No consideration for the passenger It makes a laughing stock of the Yarra motto."Think like a passenger"

    • @Schony747
      @Schony747  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually a PTV and Department of Transport Issue. Yarra Trams can express views but in the end it's the Government that makes these decisions. Let's not forget about the City of Moreland who would have had it's 50 cents worth before the whole project could go ahead for a second time. I don't know much about the extra distance the bus stop is now away from the new stop but the tram stop itself is an improvement.
