Nice! It’s changed a bit since I was last there over 10 years ago! It used to be just the city circle trams were free if I recall! Love Melbourne, probably my favorite place!!
My parents had dinner on the tram car restaurant a few years ago for my mom’s 50th birthday and it was extremely smooth even though it’s a vintage tram! It’s probably because of them fitting the tram with air suspension that makes it much smother and comfortable than even the E class trams! :)
Few points. Most of Melbourne and the suburbs is all on streets in a grid pattern, only freeways fan out radially from the city. Which means you have to try hard to get lost here, if you miss a turn for example you just take the next turn and in nearly all cases it runs parallel to the road you wanted to be on and you can get to it and the next cross road and that system runs all the way out many miles from the city. Unlike Sydney where if you take a wrong turn you are in trouble. Other thing is we don't have Uptown Downtown thing in the central city, its all the same town so you don't have to worry about ending up in the wrong part of town by accident. The area is roughly divided into corporate business district, restaurants, shopping, night clubs they are not all mixed together.
Cheers Also mention another thing about tram tracks is they all lead to the city like spokes of a wheel which can be helpful finding your way around. Same for trains, we don't have "cross town" trains or trams that don't terminate somewhere in the city eventually. You can ask someone how far the tram is away, walk to a tram line and every tram is going to the city or interchanges with one that is and same for trains. Once you get to a tram or train line they all go to town or away from town and that's marked at stations and stops. To get across town we usually have to go toward town on one line, to then go out of town on another line out.
Although buses may play the role of cross town public transport. I think it is time that Melbourne starts to implement cross town trains and trams so that people don't need to go into town to go across town. See what I mean?
There are a few crosstown trams - the 96 (St Kilda to Brunswick), 109 (Port Melbourne to Box Hill), 6 (Glen Iris to Moreland) and 1 (South Melbourne to East Coburg) all pass through the CBD but start on one side and finish on another, usually south side to north side except the 109 which is more like south side to east side. There are also 2 trams that don't go into the CBD at all - the 82 (a small route from Footscray to Maribyrnong which are nearby suburbs in the inner west) and the 78 (North Richmond to Balaclava - although it's technically St Kilda, near the border of Balaclava - down Church & Chapel Streets).
If you register your Myki card online you can also link it to your bank or credit account and top it up that way. Also youl will be able to monitor your cards usage and see your trips.
@meesalikeu hi I'm not sure if that is valid information for the public transport system in Melbourne, I've been away for over 5 years. You may need to get more recent information elsewhere. I'm pretty sure it hasn't changed, but just to be sure. Hope you enjoy your time here in our great Southern Land.
I like how the trams within the city center are free! If you get on the tram within the city center, is there an announcement if the tram is making one last stop before it exits the free zone?
+Scottman895 Travel Hmmmm.. I don't recall if they make an announcement.. they do have signs at the stops though that say you are now leaving the free tram zone.
Scottman895 Travel normally there’s a voice over that will say you’ve entered/are travelling within the free tram zone and when you’re at the last stop/leaving the free tram zone. Sometimes if it’s busy it might be hard to hear, but there’s also signs at the tram stops to let you know
Yep, they do make an announcement. The announcement says ' The tram is now leaving the free tram zone'...Please touch on if you are travelling outside the free zone.'
Yes, Americans put the emphasis on the last syllable,.. 'bourne'...pronouncing it as in the movie 'Bourne Conspiracy'. .they also do it with Brisbane....They say Bris baaane, pronouncing bane as in vain/vane (weather vane) ..We say Melben/Melbin/Brisbin
Step one get in which ever side the driver isn’t at Step two get out your wallet so it looks like your getting your myki out Step three sit down Step four put your wallet away
Step five: Run like hell when you see a PSO step inside with a reader. Step six: Apply for hospital insurance as you run out of breath and prepare for your no-holds-barred beatdown from said PSO
@@Alexander_Dunn PSOs as the meme prophesies are twice more vicious, which is why I mentioned them. Keep in mind that I'm going by continuous memes here. Yes, nearly all the regular myki checks in the present world are conducted by AUTHORISED OFFICERS as opposed to PSOs. But if the freeloader taking the P15S has to be dragged and tossed like a frisbee across Dandenong station (or St Kilda if we're still on about the tram), it won't be the AO's conducting THAT.
@@ingridclare7411 , sorry , wrong. The cable that propels cable cars is below the ground . What we Aussies call trams Americans call them streetcars , or trolleys.
@@ingridclare7411 no they dont, the usa only calls the classic old sf trams cable cars. in any other city its generally called light rail. or otherwise cities have local names for it, like for example in cleveland you would call all their rail lines be they heavy rail or light rail 'the rapid' as in, "let's just ride the rapid over there."
What a tram stop looks like: Many tram stops in the City have either of these two: Some stops have a platform with a shelter in the middle of the street. Others don't have a platform and are separated from traffic by a fence followed by a yellow "Safety Zone" sign for the traffic. Access the both of these by either a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights, unless its Bourke Street Mall. Other stops in the suburbs are nearly like bus stops, in that you wait at the side of the road and hail down the incoming tram before it arrives to tell the driver to pick you up. In every case, look for the white and green signs that will show the stop name, route number(s) and destination. How to tell a boundary of the Free Tram Zone from onboard a tram: Take note of the streets and memorize the 'Hoddle Grid'; the main grid of the Melbourne CBD. Generally, it ends as you cross La Trobe St (north of the grid) towards Carlton, Spring St towards the east to Collingwood, and south across the Yarra River. Alternatively, they'll be bright green Free Tram Zone signs at the stops themselves, sometimes telling you how many stops you have left before you have to continue onwards with a Myki card, and particularly handy when you're on a crowded tram there will be announcements onboard telling you that same information.
Kinda. I believe the 2 hour thing is really a hold over from the decades old paper ticketing system. The concept of the ticketing actually works more like Single or Daily, but instead of a 'single' fare you get 2 hours of use for the lower price. Basically it costs $8.20 (approx $6 USD) for unlimited daily travel on all trains, trams & buses; but if you only use it for less than 2 hours, you only pay half that. It's really a substitute for having a single-ride fare.
Don't forget that for $8.20 you can listen to the incessant sniffing or get coughed or sneezed on by the latest wave of migrants from Shanghai, apparently they don't cover their mouths in China or know what a tissue is. If you are Japanese or from any other civilised country, this is one city to avoid at all costs !!!!!
big sigh -- same for every city in the usa too. it's a dam shame. i blame the oil and auto industry. and just plain stupidity for the fashion of the automobile at the time, we can't discount that either. i hate wide streets with no trams in the middle its uncivilized.
