The cotton ball test. Wipe a cotton ball on the inside of the tire. If something is gonna puncture your tube, the cotton will stick to it and pull the cotton.
I use heavy duty tubes and they do last longer. I ride the gutter alot so I need them. Kinda gets expensive after a while so I do patch them when possible lol

i have seen some people put pipe isolation in the tyre so theres more material between the tube
