Still think the switch is the perfect device for the Ys genre and hoping for older games to port over as well. Soon as this pops up on All Patched Up, it's an instant buy. Ys 8 really set the bar high for the switch versions.
I’m absolutely getting the physical version. You get some sweet extras like a mini art book, soundtrack download code. I love it when companies throw in some extras, doesn’t happen nearly enough.
Sad to hear about the performance issues, but still looks like a great game. Will definitely pick it up physically eventually. Loved lacrimosa of Dana or however you write it haha. Thanks for the swift review lads!
Thanks Mark. You guys are my go-to source for Switch reviews. The game looks cool, but performance issues aside, you were really selling me on VIII with the better environment.

The performance stuff is a bit of a letdown but even though I pre-ordered the game I won't be at it until later this year anyway because of the massive backlog, so hopefully that gets sorted before then. Cheers for the great review lads!
Great review as always! I enjoyed Ys VIII so much I didn't want it to end. Was kind of disappointed with how Monstrum Nox looks and plays. The world lacks color that it emphasizes the 'dated'-ness of the engine. Will wait for sale on this one.
Lately I absolutely love anything released by NIS America/Nippon Ichi Software. I especially like the characters they create in their games. Playing through Trails 4 (and exicited that all the instalments are coming to Switch over next 2 years), got Disgaea 6, YS VIII is waiting in a backlog but played only an hour of it to get the feel. Now this. Feels like a gaming company that knows their stuff. I have faith that the Day 1 Patch will fix the performance issues mentioned in this review.
To be fair to the Switch, I've seen some reviews of this on PS4, and the performance isn't great there either. Regardless the game looks alright. I would say that this is a definite pickup for me, but I haven't even started Y's VIII yet and I've owned it for over a year... All Glory to The Infinite Backlog.
Hopefully the day one patch does some good. Apparently from the reviews ive read the game looked like trash and had frame rate problems on the ps4 too. Only version of the game that looks good is on ps5 after they released a 4k patch for it.
Been playing Ys IX on PS5, was too impatient to wait for the switch version, having just finished Ys VIII on switch haha. Love the atmosphere, the characters, music. It's all stellar, on par for the course when it comes to Ys. I would still love to get the switch version, but maybe after a big patch to improve stability. All that being said, it still looks beautiful for a switch title. Great review guys!

This game has certainly caught my eye, especially after y'all singing the praises of Ys VIII, but my RPG backlog us soon long, maybe if I don't spend my own money on it, as my birthday is coming up in about a month...
Was gonna buy it at launch, now I'm not so sure, the performance in Ys VIII tended to be a bit all over the place on the Switch and this seems to be worse by virtue of using the same engine on the same system but trying to get it to do more. If we can have a reliable 30 FPS cap and a level of performance that hits that cap most of the time after updates, I would buy it but now I feel like I should wait.
i've been wanting to try Ys for a while but i've just never been able to pull the trigger. i hate getting into long franchises in the middle when i haven't played older games because i feel like i'm missing too much story. the gameplay does look really fun though...

Just started Ys VIII on a recommendation from one of your sales videos, so it will probably be a bit before I pick this up. That said, thanks for reviewing. Assuming they're able to update the graphics especially, this will probably be another awesome game. Oh, and just out of curiosity, you said Ys VIII was in your top three ARPGs. What are the other two?
Definitely have to agree on the world design. While I'm having fun with Ys IX the aesthetics feel like a massive step backwards compared to Ys XVIII epic adventure. I hope YS X updates the engine and creates a world to outshine YS VIII.
I finished Ys 8 about 33 minutes ago. I'm not big on overly fluffed RPG's. I no longer have the patience, but I thought I'd give this a crack. It is a lovely game, a real sense of adventure, no level gating (hurraaah!!), good characters with some genuinely funny moments and the music is excellent. No doubt I lamented at times, thinking "Will this ever end?!". It won me over though and here I am watching this Ys 9 review again straight after completing it, wondering if I should dive in again... after Elden Ring 😆
I know its not a good practice to be complacent with poor performance, but I suffered through Lacrimosa of Dana on the psvita, which was capped at like 24fps, so I think I can live with this. Apparently the guy who fixed the pc port of lacrimosa is involved, so I suspect we'll see significant improvements anyways.
Man, I really wanted to pick this up, but after checking everything including the framerate issue even on handheld, I'm having second doubts since I will also be picking up Monster Hunter Stories 2.
I personally dont find much issue with performance at all. Small gripes with some things like doors not loading in right away. But framerates fine graphics too. I'm enjoying this game a ton on switch
What are we thinking of this one? That performance needs work but I will add that here when it’s available. Mark

That looks really cool but that small text in the handheld footage looked pretty tiny.
the footage you used at the end was way more interesting, i was confused why you liked it until then.
Yeah - when making a video you try and build up visually, or at least I do. Mark
Excellent stuff - its still a very good game. Mark
I love Lacrimosa of Dana and origins, of course I´m getting this one (:
Man, I really wanted to pick this up, but after checking everything including the framerate issue even on handheld, I'm having second doubts since I will also be picking up Monster Hunter Stories 2.
I want either this or Monster Hunter this week. Not an Ys-e choice. 😅
I personally dont find much issue with performance at all. Small gripes with some things like doors not loading in right away. But framerates fine graphics too. I'm enjoying this game a ton on switch
Let’s up it has plenty of work in patches and you guys cover them in in a Patched Up video!
1:14 - bit of an odd edit. Was that a mistake or intentional subluminal messaging.
What part? The channel sponsor? Mark
Ys 8 also had some frame drops on the Switch. But Overall I really look forward to play this :)
