Cable Replacement at Meritex Caves -- Part 5

  • Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) crews finish a cable replacement project at the Meritex Caves in surburban Kansas City. In Part 5 (5 of 5) the crew adds jumpers and closes the switches to energize the line, bringing power from above ground to 80 feet under in the Meritex Caves, using new and larger cable to meet increased electrical demand.

    Why would a cave need 11kV power? Are they running mining equipment or so?

      It is a big office and data center complex. Also it is super common for 11kV to be run everywhere in US. Then the transformer is placed on the poles or close by (or on ground if it is the end of the line overhead maybe or it is underground cable) to bring the power to costumer.
