Lol, now that I think about it that's probably not a coincidence that they wrote it like that. George loves repeating patterns, after all.

@Sandlund93 The whole point of a "backup hero" was back in the day Mark Hamil was something of a daredevil, especially driving cars....FAST! The "scar" he got from the Wampa, was actually to explain, in-movie, a scar he had gotten in real-life from a bad car accident. Having realized that, after the accident, that there was the potential for Mark to do something dumb that would keep him from being a fully trained jedi, if he had gotten hurt in real that would have affected the movie, a fully trained, non-Leia, Skywalker twin would have shown up and saved the day. George realized that it would have been horribly received by the fans but had to cover his ass and didn't have a choice. Fortunately Mark became much more responsible and the need for an alternative jedi was never needed so, to explain that line, they pivoted to making Leia his sister. Star Wars was never as well planned out as Lucas would have us believe, but instead had a great creative team that did a great job of creating explanations and links that filled the gaps.

I loved the reaction. Darth Vader didn't kill The Emporer, Anakin Skywalker did. The conversation between Anakin and Luke on the shuttle ramp was very emotional, the line thats gets me is when Anakin says, 'You already have Luke'. Can't wait to see your reaction to the prequels.

You are the first reactor I've watched who understood that when Leia said she knew Luke is her brother, that she was using the Force to realize it. All the others pay no attention whatsoever to her facial expressions in that scene. They listen only to the words and assume that it was just some fact she knew overtly through the entire thing.
That kind of attention to detail earns you a sub and a like from me.

    • @no_rubbernecking
      @no_rubbernecking 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Literally no one assumes it was an overt or conscious knowledge. People who object to the line are criticizing the insanity of the choice of words to describe her feelings of awareness.
You are assuming that the entirety of people's thought comprises only what they tell you.
The whole subplot is actually autobiographical. Lucas is telling us about something that actually happened to him and a cousin. I don't think anyone knowing that would hold it against him, but some of us object to a seeming normalization of it in some places. And just as we're starting to decide we can overlook that, he throws it back in our face with an absolutely bonkers way of describing it.
If he's going to have the subplot in order to warn people to be mindful, it needs to be done tastefully, but instead he manages to make it as creepy as humanly possible. That's why he gets dinged for it.
He seems to want it both ways. In telling the real-life story, he seems to truly have been creeped out to discover how he and his cousin were deceived. But in the film, he also seems to exploit it for "entertainment" value in several moments. It absolutely deserves the criticism reactors have thrown at it.

explorewith india Movies: "What?! Ts ts ts, what?" *side eye*

Kim Ellendale: "So why did you kiss him on the lips then?! If you've always known. That's... that's kind of weird! Leia, explain! You full on smooched him!"

      No one. Clearly.
"You are assuming that the entirety of people's thought comprises only what they tell you."
No, that's what the reactors who act as the quoted ones (and there's more, I just got tired of opening up windows and searching for just that scene to transcribe it) acted. Carrie Fisher is acting in that scene, and very well, I might add. There's an incredible layer of it there, and it seems to me that most people completely miss that as she is saying those lines, she is looking inward with The Force. She not simply stating that she already knows, and that this was some old news. She's literally doing exactly what Luke did on Dagobah when Obi-Wan told him he had a twin sister.
Further, you are literally the first person I've ever encountered who has some kind of issue with the lines or their delivery. And that's especially damning because I've been there since the beginning. I'm no Star Wars cherry. You are the first objection I've ever seen.
"The whole subplot is actually autobiographical. Lucas is telling us about something that actually happened to him and a cousin. I don't think anyone knowing that would hold it against him, but some of us object to a seeming normalization of it in some places. All utterly irrelevant to what I was saying in my OP.
"It absolutely deserves the criticism reactors have thrown at it."
Again, their "criticisms" are less criticism and more a misunderstanding of how she knew and failure to observe the acting that accompanied the lines. I think the quoted lines above demonstrate that handily enough.

@@wyldink1 You just don't understand satire.
I've tried to explain but you're not listening
The reason you haven't heard it before is because others either assume everyone's on the same page, or just don't have the patience to explain. I myself am not yet sure it was a good idea, given your last comment.
Literally... No One... really thinks she wanted to intentionally go to town on her brother, nor that Lucas thought she'd want to. They're reacting to how ridiculous the idea is. The fact that they may not say a whole lot, is just because to them, the situation as presented is self-evidently stupid.
There are many things in movies that are stupid. The reactors are trying to entertain, not compose and deliver a sermon on every problem. If they can make a joke of something silly, they will.... but how does one make a joke out of this insanity? It's just too uncomfortable.
As i said, i don't fault Lucas for going there, but with the _way_ he chose to present it, it doesn't make for good conversation or even debate. It's just a mess that should have been handled better, but he was too immature at the time. I think if he'd done it 15 or 20 years later, it would have been very different. But it is what it is.

@@no_rubbernecking "You just don't understand satire."
Yes, THAT must be it. Despite the fact that there is no satire present (unless you're trying to suggest that you are being satirical, in which case, the rest of your post debunks that claim) and since I actually understand satire all too well, this is - at best - a desperate post hoc rationalization for why I could immediately demonstrate that your claim that "literally no one assumes it was overt or conscious knowledge" was false.
"I've tried to explain but you're not listening"
Oh, I'm listening. I'm just not buying bullshit. Huge difference.

"The reason you haven't heard it before is because others either assume everyone's on the same page, or just don't have the patience to explain."
Ooooh, I see. Everyone just *assumes* everyone else feels the same, so no one really brings it up. Kind of like how everyone just assumes we're all on the same page for virtually every single aspect of these movies, from the Vader twist in Empire to the status of the sequel trilogy as canon, and doesn't feel the need to bring it up. Is that right?
"I myself am not yet sure it was a good idea, given your last comment."
Because my last comment showed that your assertion was incorrect?
"Literally... No One... really thinks she wanted to intentionally go to town on her brother, nor that Lucas thought she'd want to."
*rereads the lines I quoted from other reactors*
      Clearly.
"They're reacting to how ridiculous the idea is. The fact that they may not say a whole lot, is just because to them, the situation as presented is self-evidently stupid."
Or, and hear me out on this, they listened only to the lines being spoken and paid zero attention to the visual aspect of the medium they were engaged in, taking the lines as "literal overt or conscious knowledge", and reacted as someone who thinks such a thing would act.
      Nutty, I know.
"There are many things in movies that are stupid."
No argument there. But it isn't so much that the things that are stupid is people's literal interpretations of dialogue and more that specific things are obviously stupid.
"The reactors are trying to entertain, not compose and deliver a sermon on every problem."
Yup. Which is why they are REACTING to the movies and the events depicted therein.
"If they can make a joke of something silly, they will.... but how does one make a joke out of this insanity? It's just too uncomfortable."
For you, perhaps. Plenty of people are neither uncomfortable with it or understand exactly what that scene is accomplishing.
"As i said, i don't fault Lucas for going there, but with the way he chose to present it, it doesn't make for good conversation or even debate. It's just a mess that should have been handled better, but he was too immature at the time. I think if he'd done it 15 or 20 years later, it would have been very different. But it is what it is."
You do know Lucas wasn't the only screenwriter for the movie, right?

I was born in 1974, so Star Wars had already arrived by the time I really knew what was going on as a tiny kid. And I was swimming in it as a young kid. Such awesome times. So many stories. We'd all be swapping figures, collecting the sticker books, reading the 'making of' stuff etc.
I remember using a rubber concertina thing and tons of papier mache etc to make my own version of the giant space worm from Empire Strikes Back (I'd blow in one end tomake it spring out of the cave). And my parents got me the awesome Ewok Village toy playset in Christmas 1983 and I loved it so much that I remember mum shouting up the stairs, eagerly trying to get me downstairs for breakfast :) I also remember being a bit perturbed that my brother swapped 18 of our cool toy figures for one unboxed Rancor Monster figure with a virtual stranger down the road.
It was all amazing. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were gifting us with rockin' blockbusters all the time. At the same time proper arcade machines had arrived so we were the first generation to be playing computer games at home of Star Wars and other favourites. Home video was just arriving too, so that also meant we could watch them over and over again.

In the episode you’ve just reacted to, you have my most favorite line of all the movies I ever watched in my entire life - “I am a Jedi, like my father before me”.
It was wise to watch them in their release order. In the next ones (1, 2 and 3) you’ll learn the story of Darth Vader … and when you’ll get to ep. 7 (The Force Awakens), some awesome surprises will wait for you there. You decided to watch a great saga, so great that it earned its own worldwide celebration day, which is May 4th, that is May the fourth - like in “may the Force (be with you)”. Looking forward to your next reaction.

Everyone in the Movie Theatre was shocked and gasped when we discovered that Princess Leia was Luke's Twin Sister. Everyone cheered in the Movie Theatre when Darth Vader turned on the Emperor, in the original version Darth Vader did not scream No before grabbing the Emperor. He just looked back and forth before grabbing the Emperor.

Thanks for watching this trilogy. I really hope you appreciate why this is such a beloved franchise. When Star Wars first cane out in the late 70s and 80s, nothing else like it existed and even the special effects had to actually be 'created' for the first time for the movies ( I know it may look a bit out dated now, but back then, it was new and exciting!)
Can I just say, if you're gonna watch episodes #1 - 3, they have a different vibe but by the end you will really love the story even more than now. There's a lot of talk about politics in it, but my advice is, don't worry so much about the political talk, and just watch the characters cause that's really the core of what the movies are about....can't wait for you to see them! While it's never outright said in the franchise, I suspect the underlying message is that all life is sacred, so in extinguishing the life of your enemy, you _become_ the enemy.

Originally, Leia was not going to be Luke's sister. The idea of him even having a twin was to make the audience fear that there is someone else standing by in case Luke turns to the dark side, so you feel there is a real possibility that Luke could go bad since he's expendable now.
But originally his sister was going to be a totally new and different character who would be introduced in this film, and then the next trilogy would be about her. But by 1983, Lucas was tired of making Star Wars films and he just wanted to tie up all the loose ends, so he just made Leia the other twin.

    1. Best guess is that Han was Jabba's "trophy" for about a year and a half before the rescue.
    2. Vader discovered Leia as Luke's sister because he could feel it in Luke.
Luke didn't know that until just before then.
    3. Luke's light saber is green because he lost his old one along with his hand so they
decided to make it green because it worked better in the desert background landscape.
    4. Everybody is freaking out because Luke and Leia kissed mostly because she was trying
to piss off Han. They didn't know they are related.
    5. The "I love you. I know" was written into the script to get Leia the shot to say it to Han.
    6. This was Warrick Davis'/Lead Ewok first acting gig. He was only 13.
Willow is his lead with Val Kilmer and worth a first time/share.😎
    7. Awesome camera work with the race through the forest. Nobody in their right mind would go that fast.
    8. A little corn. Hans' reaction to Leia telling him Luke is her brother.
    9. Jedi is plural. With Luke and Leia leading the way they can reestablish the Jedi back into the galaxy.
    10. Ford wanted Han to die in this episode.
    11. This is the best of the original 6 George Lucas Star Wars. After this he sold it to Disney and everything changed. Sadly

Going into Ep.1, keep in mind that it takes place before the Empire, so there is no emperor and no rebel alliance. There is still a democracy in the galaxy but it's on its last legs. The ruling government is the Republic which has a galactic congress made up of senators from all the member planets (though not every planet is part of the Republic). The leader of the senate is the Supreme Chancellor, kind of like the president or prime minister of the galaxy. There is no military because there's been peace for 1,000. The Jedi serve and protect the Republic but exist apart from it with its own rules and traditions. Centuries before they had defeated their ancient dark side enemies, the Dark Lords of the Sith.
By the time of Ep.1, the senate has become corrupt and ineffective, with senators open to bribery from wealthy, powerful corporations which are so influential that they even have their own senators in congress who influence the laws in their own favor. One of these corporations is the Trade Federation. They are the apparent villains of the film, but are secretly in cahoots with a familiar-looking shadowy figure pulling the strings whose existence not even the Jedi are aware of.

Fun fact: Underwear does not exist in the Star Wars universe. Therefore no Star Wars actor wore underwear during any of the filming including the scenes where Leia is wearing her famous bikini
Another fun fact: Ewoks are actually primates just like us despite superficially resembling bears

Excellent reaction, one of the most intelligent I have seen with rich observations of the characters and interconnected stories. Highly recommend you see Episodes I, II, and III to see Anakin's backstory and follow up with Rogue One, as it's the prestory to Episode IV.

first I would like to say this woman is a complete knockout in the looks department, with a great personality to boot.
Secondly, I don't like the Ewoks but I love everything else about this movie. I also love the new song at the end because the original one sounded like the theme from the care bears spoken in a weird alien language.

@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 no it doesn't. And i am not a dude, my name is Ralph and i have been watching star wars since I was in jammies. And even then i knew yub nub was the worst. I almost hate all of the special additions Mr. Lucas added to the Return of the Jedi, especially the goofy dance number at Jabba's palace. But one change that worked was the song at the end, something most hard core Star Wars fans agree on.

tynia, you didn't show it, but when Luke told Leia, she was sad afterwards, why ? because she knew she would have to get rid of her child(ren) because at the end of the last movie, her and luke were alone together on a spaceship and what do you think they did? and star wars is based on japanese culture and in that, incest is shamed upon. so when Yoda said in the last movie the future you could see, he said in this movie, he said there is another skywalker, i don't think he was talking about leia, i think he was talking about the future...
