Ben, what if I don´t have any luggage but just my hand luggage. Do I need to get out the terminal and check in all over again? Or I can just move internally to the next gate and make the checkin for the next fligth inside connection flights area?
If your flying internationally and have an hour between arrival and when the connecting flight departs is that enough time? Do you have to go through tsa again at second airport?
@@bigcmcg3946 In that case an hour should be fine as long as you don't experience any delays. You will not have to go through TSA again at the connecting airport.
Airport apps and airline aps are great as you can get alerts of the next gate and if they have changes and maps of the airport etc make it soooo much easier
The problem is that when you travel with two different airlines, if your luggage is lost at this time, none of the airlines will accept responsibility.
Thank you so much for this video, I will b going through connecting flights with different airlines soon & watching this saved my life because I actually thought through all cases the luggage goes to the final destination directly. Silly me 🤦🏽♀️. I am glad I watched this video, thanks a lottt😊
I happened to get pushed your videos in my feed last month, and I'm glad I did! I work in training and you do such a great job walking through information logically and thoughtfully. You don't over explain, which maximizes the effectiveness of all the content you create. No questions, but I wanted to give you props for your videos and information!
Great information and pretty important stuff to know. My wife and I are doing a Vancouver to Manila trip in October Air Canada /ANA with a two hour layover at Narita. I did the same flight several years ago and thankfully the luggage was moved for me.
@@connieng6763 to be honest I can't remember. We just came back again using EVA and we did have to go through security again in Taipei so I'm thinking we may have had to at Narita as well a couple of years back. Very fast and easy though.
Thank you I’m going on my first international trip and it’s hard to find information on what to do with luggage. Glad I came across your video this was very useful.
Thank you for the video, the information was very clear. I would like to know if once I self-transfer my luggage to my final destination, I can explore the airport because I have a 10 hours layover.
Yes, you can explore the airport. Although you may not be able to check your luggage for your next flight more than four hours before your departure time. Some airports have a bag storing service that you can pay by the hour at. It might be worth looking into so you don’t have to haul around your luggage while exploring the airport.
Hello, It’s my first time travelling alone im barely adult xD im kinda scared. In Canada, theres a dimension limit on carry-on luggages but theres no limit in weight.. I will be in a different airline on my 3rd layover will they have a different carry-on policy? From Air Canada to Eva Airlines (Taiwan)
It looks like Eva Airlines has a max carry-on weight of 7kg or 15 Ibs so you will want to make sure your carry-on does not exceed that weight. Otherwise, you will want to check your carry-on if you want to avoid any issues with Eva. Safe travels to Taiwan!
Great video, I’m connecting via Boston to Cleveland next year from Heathrow. This has put my mind at rest a bit. We booked through virgin but all flights are through delta! 1h30 layover. Wife is worried but I think it will be fine!
If your flight departs on time that should be enough time but just know that you will have to go through US customs and immigration when you get to Boston as well as having to recheck your luggage.
@@BenDreamVacations will I need to recheck my luggage? Both legs of flights to Cleveland are with delta and was booked as “one flight” which had a connection?
@@BenDreamVacations thank you for the info! I will have a re think on my seat options as that is all I can really change now! Have to try and get off the flight quickly and get through immigration quick. 1.5 hours suddenly doesn’t seem very long!!
@@twpburton The closer to the front of the plane the better. If you are arriving between 5-7pm you can expect longer wait times as that is when a lot of international flights arrive. Outside of that time you should be able to get through in about 30 minutes on average.
Hi Ben, thanks for sharing. This past Monday, I had the worst experience with United Airlines. Btw I am a US passport holder. My original itinerary were as follows: Washington DC - Chicago with a layover of 5hrs. Chicago to Delhi with a layover of 17hrs. Both were operated by United Airlines. However, from Delhi to Kathmandu (final destination) it was operated by Vistara. I had one bag I was going to check in. When I went to check in for my flight Monday, they said they couldn't send my bag to my final destination and I would need to re-check my bag in Delhi. Now normally this wouldn't be a problem (usually when I go to Nepal, I go through Doha, Qatar) except that it's India and they require tourist visa to enter India. I would need to go through Indian customs to retrieve my bag. Not knowing this in advance and maybe it's my fault for assuming my bag would go to my final destination, I didn't have a visa. So I ended up rebooking my flight. Also, side note, I booked through United Airlines website, not through a third party organization. I was livid! Tell me, is it common knowledge that people should know this? What advice do you have for future bookings, checked luggage and connections? Is it on the passenger to know this specific detail or should the airline have warned me (or informed me after the fact) when I booked that I would need to recheck my bag in India? Btw, this is not my first time traveling internationally. I have been to at least 10 foreign countries by plane and had my bag go to my final destination. Thanks.
Hi Pramila, I am sorry that you had to experience that. For these type of flights you really do have to do some research to make sure you are not missing anything especially when it comes to visas. I did a quick search on Vistara's website and it states "All passengers arriving from an international destination should collect their bags and clear customs at the first entry point in the country. This applies even if the bags are through tagged till the final domestic destination. Passengers can recheck-in from transfer area check-in counters, post custom clearance." You would think United would warn you of this before you book your flights and not at the time of check-in but you can't rely on them to give you this information. What I do before I book international flights for a client is to check the visa requirements for each country they have a connecting flight in and for the final destination as well as check each airline's website to verify their baggage policy. If you do that you will avoid having the situation you just had. For next time, I would definitely avoid connecting in India if possible. I hope that helps you in some way.
thank you so much for making this video, it was of great help :) i have flown before, but this is the first time i'm doing it alone, so any information regarding the procedure comes in handy
Hello Sir, thank you for the very helpful and informative video. However, I have a question I hope you can help with. If I am travelling to the US on 2 connecting flights across different airlines with various baggage allowance regulations, which one do I follow? Does it mean I have to pay for my luggage on one flight but not the next or does the first airline baggage allowance rule apply to all flights until I reach my final destination? Thank you in advance!
You will have to follow the baggage allowance regulations for each airline. If you have connecting flights on different airlines and they do not have a partnership with each other then you are going to have to pick up your bags between flights and recheck them with the next airline and pay any applicable bag fees.
@@BenDreamVacations yeah because I booked on kiwi and I have a flight with virgin to lhr then British airways to Bru and only carry ons come with my tickets so I’m confused
I dont know if you stated it in the video, I have a flight from atl to fll and its a domestic flight. My other flight is from FLL to Jamaica will I have to go through customs or do i just head to the gate that's on my ticket. First time connecting amd first time international.
As long as you didn’t book each flight separately then you can just head to the gate of your next flight once you arrive in FLL. You will only have to go through customs once you arrive in Jamaica.
This video helped me a lot! My roundtrip ticket is with New Zealand Airways, so all my flights will be with them and we booked it all in one ticket. Do you think I’d still have to grab my bag and recheck it in before going through customs at my connections?
Hi Ben..thank you for sharing..i have a question..i am travelling from Greece to San Domingo with a stop at JFK airport..both flights are operated from Delta airlines as a single ticket..my question is this..do i have to recheck my baggage at JFK airport..?? or my buggage will be sent from Greece directly to San Domingo??I am asking because my waitting time between the two flights are 2hours and 20 minutes and i am afraid it will be too tight .. thank you very much..
Hi Ben thank you for the video. I have a question tho, i booked a ticket via a travel agent with two separate airlines. Im flying from Larnaca to Oslo with 3hr layover and then to New York. If i checked in for my flight online and have no checked bag i have to leave transit zone and pass security again? Or i can just follow connecting flight signs and find my gate faster?
Hi Alkis! If you are not checking a bag then you will not need to leave the secured area and go through security again unless the different terminals at Oslo aren’t connected. Just make sure to get the boarding pass for your next flight by downloading a digital one or getting one from the airline at the gate.
You will have to go through customs in AMS but not in BUD. Both AMS and BUD are located in countries that are apart of what's called the Schengen area. So, once you go through customs and immigration in AMS and enter the Schengen area you won't have to do it again in BUD because BUD is in the Schengen area as well.
@BenDreamVacations one last clarification - because I'd go through customs in AMS, I'd have to grab my bags and recheck them for the flight to BUD correct?
@@msleigh you won’t have to recheck your bags in Amsterdam unless you booked each flight separately. They should transfer over to the next flight for you automatically.
I don’t really travel as much but I hope to one day. For example, I would like to go to Japan and I live in Pennsylvania. Does this mean I would have to take a plane to California and when I get there I have to check for my bag? What are the best sites and plane companies to use?
Yes, you would need to take a plane to California and then onto Japan. You won’t have to check for your bag in California as long as you book your flights on one ticket and not as separate flights. I like to use google flights to search for my flights and once I find the flight that I like I book directly with that airline.
Question, how will I know if the two airlines I book with have the same luggage policy? Do connecting flights adapt the same policy for convenience? I’m worried about the second airline company having a fee for any checked bags while the first airline company doesn’t. I’m not sure how to check if that’s the case or not.
The only way to tell is to go to each of the airline's websites and view their luggage policy. If you booked each airline separately, you will need to collect your luggage in between flights and check it in again with the new airline and pay the fee. If you have booked the flights together under the same reservation then it's possible that you won't have to pay a luggage fee since the first airline doesn't charge a fee and that policy will carry over to the second flight. Also, depending on the airline, there may be a luggage calculator on their website to help you determine what you can expect to pay for checking a bag. Hope that helps
Hi Ben, thanks for sharing the info. I have booked connecting flights from London to Budapest and Budapest to the next destination via Wizz air. I’m travelling with just a carry on so don’t have to worry about luggage collection and all. Now my question is do I need to go to customs after that or directly to check in counter, please? I’m a British passport holder if that helps to answer the question with more accuracy. TIA😊
If your final destination is within the Schengen area then you can expect to go through customs in Budapest, otherwise if it is not, you will just go through a security check before heading to your next gate.
Thank you sir for this helpful video, i have a connecting flights next month from Saudi Arabia to Dubai and from Dubai to Uganda, and am asking will i need to correct my baggage and recheck when i reach to Dubai or i will find them to my destination? Thanks so much
If you booked your flights together with the same airline then your bags should be transferred through all the way to Uganda. However, if you booked each flight separately then you will have to collect your bags in Dubai and recheck them with the next airline.
Hi Ben, I have a United connection flight to San Diego to San Francisco, 1 hour layover San Francisco to Seoul. Would I get 2 flight tickets for those 2 connecting flights and recheck my luggage, or do I go straight to my next gate once I arrive to SF for my connection flight??
Hi Bryan, once you check in for your flights you will receive both boarding passes at the same time. Since your connecting flight is in the US you won't have to recheck luggage. You can just head straight to the gate of your next flight.
hello, i am flying to usa tomorrow from heathrow with united airlines. i'm flying to washington then charleston (with united again) do i need to re check in? or just go through immigration and security?
I have a flight from Vancouver to Rome connecting in Paris both flights with Air France. Is 1h 20 mins enough time if 1st plane arrive in time? Do I need to go to any kind of security that requires a long line up?
That should be enough time for a connecting flight in Paris. You won’t have to go through any kind of security as long as you don’t leave the secured area. Just follow the connecting flights signs and double check your next gate number on the departure screens and head to the gate.
I am a first time traveler all alone. I will be going from my destination to ATL, from ATL to GRU, and to my final destination . Do I need to go through security of each connecting flight?
If you are just traveling from the US to Brazil then you should only have to go through security once. You will however have to go through customs and immigration once you arrive in Brazil.
Hi Ben! I would appreciate you help with this as it's my first time flying alone and with connecting flights! I am flying from Amsterdam to Cyprus with a connecting flight (45 mins layover ) in Belgrade and then from Cyprus to Amsterdam with a connecting flight in Athens (1 hour layover) . Do i need to check in my bag at the connecting airports? Also, do I need to pass through security again? Some people tell me you don't need to in Belgrade but you need to in Athens. If yes, is the time of the connection enough for that? Also, what happens if the first flight gets delayed?
If all your flights were booked on one ticket then you your bags should be checked all the way through each way. Belgrade's airport is small so you have a decent chance there but Athens might be an issue if you end up arriving at one of their satellite terminals in which case you will need to take a bus to get to the main terminal which will eat up some time. I am assuming you are from the Netherlands which is part of the EEC. This will allow you to skip having to go through passport control in Athens. Non EEC citizens like me from the U.S. would have to go through customs for a connecting flight in Athens. If your flight gets delayed and you miss your connecting flight the airline will rebook you on the next available flight. I hope that helps!
@@BenDreamVacations I am sorry but I am a bit confused! As I am checking Cyprus is not in the Schengen zone. Doesn’t that mean I will have to go through passport control in Athens? By customs do you mean security control of the luggage?
@@diamondk6214 correct, Cyprus is not in the Schengen area so you will go through customs when you arrive in Cyprus but for your return flight through Athens you will not have to go through customs because Athens is in the Schengen area and since you are from the Netherlands which is in the Schengen area you will not have to go through customs in Athens. I hope that make sense. And customs is where they check your passport.
Hi Ben, first time on your channel. I'm going from EWR (NJ) to IAH (Houston), and from IAH to Guatemala using United for both flights. Do you know if I have to go through customs or what should I expect? Thanks.

I’m flying from: Edinburgh > Amsterdam > Atlanta > Wilmington (north Carolina) with virgin Atlantic (I think the flights are KLM and Delta who are partners). Hi Lucy, your luggage should go all the way to Wilmington so you won’t have to worry about rechecking your luggage unless you ended booking your flights as separate flights. Safe travels to the US!
Hey first of all thanks for the informative video👏🏻 Next month I have flight from Barcelona to India with 2 layovers at FRA & MCT:- BCN to FRA on Lufthansa layover for about 1hr40min then FRA to MCT & MCT to India on Oman Air. I booked this ticket through Oman Air so my doubt is do I have to recheck in my baggage at FRA? Is 1hr40min enough to transfer at FRA?
If you booked your flights all with Oman Air then your luggage will check through all the way to India. An 1h 40min connecting time in FRA will be enough time to make your next flight.
Hi, i wanted to ask can airports charge us to get through customs and get out baggage for a self transfer? Dammam airport forced us to get their 130 dollar visa just to get to baggage claim
I haven't heard of that happening before but that sucks if they made you pay just to go and pick up your bag between flights. What airport was this at?

hello ben, my plan is to travel from pakistan to xuzhou china ,as xuzhou is a small city of china so its airport has only domestic airline so to land at xuzhou i have to change my airline, my question is i'm gonna be taking 35kg luggage with me for emirates airline and land in guangzhou afterwards when i change my airline to reach xuzhou will it will create problem for me?? as domestic airlines allows only 20kg and i'm bit concerned about it
It could be a problem. You might just have to pay an extra fee to be able to carry more weight but it will depend on the airline. You might have to contact the airline to see what your options are or see if there is another airline that allows a higher weight limit.
Hi Ben, my flights will be Phoenix -> Seattle -> Incheon -> Ho Chi Minh city. I booked everything on Delta website. Do I have to collect my checked bag between the connecting flights? it will be Delta going from Phoenix to Seattle to Incheon. From Incheon I will be switched to Vietnam Airlines to go to HCM city. I did ask a Delta rep and they said "maybe" I had to collect my bag. My friend who took similar flights said he did not do anything at all. This is so confusing. Please help me.
Your checked bags should be transferred all the way to Ho Chi Minh. Just double check your bag tags to make sure it reads SGN for Ho Chi Minh airport when you check your bags in with Delta in Phoenix. You won't need to worry about rechecking them in Incheon. You also won't need to pass through customs or immigration in Incheon but there is one security check you do need to go through for international transfers but it is very efficient. Safe travels!
I am from California and I plan on going to an international flight to Peru(iquitos) soon. On my first stop, do I immediately go to customs and immigration first, or do I check into the airport first?
You will have to go through customs once you land in Peru but whether you have to go through customs at the first stop depends which country you are connecting through.
I am travelling from US to France, with transfers in Toronto and Montreal. Do I have to go thru security and or customs in Toronto and Montreal? All flights are Canada Air. (I am asking to make sure I schedule enough time between flights, in case I have to.)
Hello sir , i have a query, so this year in May i have 3 stops from india to edmonton, canada...so how many hours layover would make sense so tat i dont miss connecting flights ?? Please help as i this is my first international flight ...thanku 😊 pls
Since this is your first international flight I would try to make each connecting flight at least an hour and 1/2 to 2 hours. If you have a connecting flight in the U.S. give yourself longer since you will have to go through customs and immigration and recheck your luggage.
Hi Ben, thanks for the video! I’m flying Milan (LIN) to Amsterdam (AMS) to Vancouver (YVR) to Comox (YQQ) at the end of January and I have a few questions. It might be useful to mention that I’ve applied for a Study Visa and I’ll also have to collect that when I arrive in Vancouver. Anyway, my travel agency said that I might have to take my luggage and check it in again after customs in Vancouver, but I have absolutely no idea how the process works, as I’ve always had connections without the issue of re-checking the baggage. From what I gather from your video, it seems like I’ll have to exit the secured area and check in again as I would normally do in the initial airport, but my agency told me that I absolutely mustn’t do that. So my question is: how do I get to the Visa and to my gate after collecting my luggage? And where do I check it in again? I’m sorry for the long message, but I’m actually kinda anxious about the whole thing.
What airlines are you flying on and where all the flights booked on one ticket? Generally you will not need to recheck your luggage when connecting through Vancouver from an International flight but if your flights were booked separately then you will need to recheck your bags once you arrive in Vancouver.
@@BenDreamVacations I’m flying with KLM for the first two flights and with WestJet for the last one! For the second question, I didn’t book them myself, but since the booking has all the three flights together, I guess they were booked on one ticket :)
@@megga6276 it sounds like that is the case. If you just have one confirmation number then they were all booked together and since KLM and West jet are partner airlines KLM will transfer you luggage over to West jet flight for you. If you have booked two separate airlines then yes, you will have to check-in for the second flight. If you have booked both flights together then you won't have to check in again. Once you check-in you will be checked in for both flights and will receive both boarding passes.
Hi Ben, i have an Air Canada connecting flight from seoul to toronto with layover in vancouver about two and half hours. I have to pass the immigration in vancouver to get study permit, is it enough time to catch the flight to toronto? What should i do if i missed the flight?
Hi Johan, a two and a half hour layover should be enough time. I generally like to give myself 3 hours for international layovers but I think you should be be fine. If you were to miss the flight to Toronto, Air Canada will put you on the next available flight at no additional cost.
Hello Mr, I have a connection flight from Australia to Saudi Arabia through India, and I have carry-on bag and backpack. The airline companies are different. Do I need to have Indian transit visa? Thank you.
Generally, you will not need a transit visa as long as your connecting flight is less than 24 hours and you do not leave the transit area of the airport. Since it looks like you are not checking a bag, you won't need to leave the transit area to collect your luggage and will not require a visa.
Hello Ben and thank you for a very clear video. Next month I will fly from Milan Malpensa (MXP) to Montreal (YUL) and from there to Toronto Pearson (YYZ) with AirCanada for both flights, so I imagine my checked baggage will be moved for me and will arrive straight to Toronto. Originally I had booked flights with a layover in Montreal without changing the airplane, but few days ago AirCanada modified my itinerary and now I need to change plane when I land in Montreal and I have only 1h or so to do that. Considering that I will need to go through customs and the flight from Milan might be delayed, I am worried I won't have enough time to do that. What's your thought on this? I am getting news that flights are getting delayed basically everyday, both in Montreal and Toronto. Thank you in advance!
Hi Beatrice, an hour in my opinion is too short for an international connection. The customs lines at Toronto have been crazy lately so even if you don’t have a delay you might have a hard time making the connecting flight anyway. I would try and get a 3 hour connection if you are able to. That should be enough time to account for the long customs lines and and delays that you might encounter.
I have an International flight with connecting flights through multiple countries. I am flying from North Dakota to Dallas Texas. Dallas Texas to Narita Japan. Narita Japan to Bangkok Thailand. Do I need to re-check my luggage on every connection flight?
As long as you booked each flight together and not separately then you won't have to worry about rechecking your luggage at any of the connecting airports. Just make sure you do not leave the secured area of the airport, especially in Narita. You will however need to go through a security check in Narita when you arrive but that will be all that is required.
Hi Sir this was an amazing video. I want to ask that I want to book a flight from Delhi, India To Toronto,Canada and I have found an affordable and suitable flight (emirates) but it has connecting flights although they are from the same Airline but it has a 4hrs layover in Dubai so will it be enough or should I opt for more time and also I would be booking a flight for the first time and everyone else here in India hire agents so I am anxious will it be safe? Can you guide me please
Hi Piyush, a 4 hour layover is plenty of time. No need to make it longer. If you have read and understand the restrictions to be able to enter Canada and you are comfortable dealing with any possible delays and changes with your flights then you are safe to book on your own. But if you want someone to help you understand the restrictions and manage your flights for you then book with an agent.
I booked my flight through Capital One travel portal, but have a Delta account. Was able to reserve my seat on their website, but had to create a Korean Air account for my connecting flight to reserve a seat. Is my luggage going to be taken care of by Delta still?
Delta and Korean Air have a partnership so Delta should move your bag over the connecting flight. I would just double check the bag tag at check-in to make sure it reads your final destination on it.
Hi! I have a flight from Montevideo to Chile with the boarding pass available online but my connecting flight to MIA doesn’t allow online check in. Will I need to got to the airline counter in Chile to get my boarding pass or is it available at the gate?
Since you are flying into the U.S. you will have to show proof of vaccination before the airline will give you a boarding pass into the U.S. Some airlines will allow you to upload it online while others will require you to provide at the time of check-in. So you will probably need to show your proof of vaccination to the airline in Montevideo before your first flight.
I'm thinking about flying to Finland and some flights say Self transfer and some just say connecting flights, with the self transfers do I have to re check in?
For flights indicating self transfers you are responsible for checking yourself in for your next flight including rechecking your baggage with the next airline.

Hello, I have a flight from RSW (FL) connecting at PHI (PA) to LIS (Lisbon Portugal) Would I only have to worry about checking in my luggage at RSW? Will they take care of it and bring it to my final destination in Lisbon? I booked this all in one ticket with American Airlines.
Also when would I go through immigration? At my first flight? Connecting flight? Or when I land and in Lisbon. As well as returning, would I go through immigration again before departing Lisbon or would I have to do it in PHI
Since you booked it all through American, you only need to worry about checking your luggage in RSW. Your bags will automatically transfer to the next flight for you.
You will go through immigration and customs once you land in Lisbon. The only thing you will have to worry about in PHL is finding your next gate. On your return flight however, once you land in PHL you will have to go through US customs and immigration and you will be required to recheck your luggage as well before being allowed to head to your next flight.
Hi Ben. I booked a flight through Brussels airline from ACC to YYT. I have two connecting flights, would I need to recheck in my luggage? Brussels air > Air Canada> Air Canada. Thank you
Hi Christabel, if you booked your flights all through Brussels airline then unless you booked each flight individually you won't have to recheck your luggage. Both Brussels and Air Canada are partner airlines so they will move your luggage for you between flights. Just double check your bag tag and make sure it reads YYT before handing if off to the airline.
Hi flying from Malaysia 🇲🇾 to Indonesia from Indonesia to perth. My layover is 1 hours and 35 minutes I'm only taking carry on.do I have to exit the airport and enter again to clear customs or stay in side and bord the next flight
If you are only taking a carry-on then you can just head straight to the next gate for your flight to Perth. You will not not need to go through customs unless you try to leave the airport.
I’m traveling from China Xiamen to Manila then to Vancouver and I’m using same Philippine airlines but there is a 6 hour stop in manilla and different flight number so I would like to ask if I have to get my luggage at Manila and recheck
This will depend on if you will have to switch terminals for your connecting flight in Manila. Since none of the terminals are connected, if you have to switch terminals you will be required to collect your luggage, go through customs and immigration and recheck your luggage at the new terminal. If you don't have to switch terminals then you will not have to recheck your luggage.
First time flying out of state for surgery alone. Just taking carry on and personal bag. Delta, hour and 15 minute layover at JFK. I feel like I'm going to get lost at JFK. Is that enough time to catch my flight to my final destination?
That should be enough time assuming you don't experience any delays. All of Delta flights are in one terminal so you shouldn't have to go to far to catch the next flight.
It will depend on the country you are traveling to. Each country has their own rules about transit visas. Canada for example requires a transit visa even if you are just connecting on your way to another country. For most others as long as you stay in the airport you would not need a visa.

*So if I book a flight to Colombia from NYC, I first have to land in Mexico & still have to find my other flight to Colombia from the same airline (VivaAeroBus) in Mexico City/ or there’s guide? What if I miss my flight? It’s my first time going alone to a different country, please help?*
If you are flying with the same airline for both flights then your connecting flight in Mexico shouldn't be too far away from the gate you arrive in. Just look for departures board once you exit the airplane and are in the airport terminal. Look for your next flight on the board which will tell you which gate your next flight will depart out of and head that way following the signs inside the terminal. If you miss your flight the airline will rebook you for the next available flight to Colombia and you can talk to any of the airline agents at the gate to do so.

For a connecting flight in Changi you won't have to go through customs or immigration as long as you don't leave the secured area. There will be a security check after you land but as long as you have your next boarding pass and gate assignment you can just make your way to the next gate, otherwise look for a transfer desk. If you have to switch terminals there will be a train you can take to get from one terminal to the other. It's a beautiful airport so if you end up with some extra time feel free to explore.
Hello, im going from heathrow to rio de Janeiro then from there to sao paulo, will i need to go through immigration and customs in rio or only in sao paulo?
For a connecting flight into the U.S. you will need fill out a ESTA application to obtain a travel authorization to be able to enter the U.S. esta-center.com/en/top/index.html. This will allow you to enter the US without a visa. You will need to complete the application at least 3 days before you plan to enter the U.S. There will be a fee for the application as well.
I need an assistance from u.... As i will be travelling very soon from London Heathrow Airport 3 on virgin Atlantic Flight to Mumbai Airport landing at Terminal 2... After clearing My immigration n Customs... What m i doing next as i got a connecting flight at Mumbai Airport Terminal 1 To go to my final Destination... After clearing Customs at terminal 2 Will i be having luggage with me to carry with ??? Or just hand luggage??? If yes then do i have to re check inn again at Mumbai Airport Terminal 1 ???? Need advice
As long as your tickets were booked together your bags should get transferred over to the next plane for you. Here is the process you will need to follow. Once you arrive at terminal 2 in Mumbai you will go through immigration and customs then afterwards you can proceed towards the transfer facility. The airport staff can help guide you through the process and answer any questions that you have. You won't need to check in again or collect your checked luggage unless you have separate tickets for your domestic and international flights. After reaching the transfer facility, you'll need to go through a security check. You must undergo pre-embarkation security checks before proceeding to the domestic departure area. To get to terminal 1 you can take a free shuttle to get there. Once you arrive in terminal 1 you can go to straight to the gate, just ensure that you have your boarding pass and necessary identification documents readily available to expedite the process.
@BenDreamVacations I think after clearing immigration an Then collecting my luggage Going through customs after all done I think I have to carry luggage with me on free shuttle bus to go terminal 1...
I am traveling to another location by two different airlines and there is a limit of carrying 1 check-in bags. But If I want to take an additional check-in bag, do I have to pay both airlines?
If they are partner airlines then you will only have to pay once. However, if you booked them as two separate flights then you will have to pay each airline to check your bag.
I have 2 stops from Manchester to Lincoln, all my flights are with lufthansa, and my connection flights are with lufthansa United, does this mean I have to check my luggage again or does it go on the next plane, thankyou in advance
Both United and Lufthansa are partner airlines so they will move your luggage to the next plane for you unless you booked your flights as two separate flights.
I've got a question. Hypothetically, you're travelling from Country A to Country B, and you do a layover in Country C. You have prescription medication in your luggage. This medication is legal in Country A and Country B, but in Country C (the country where you are taking the layover) this medication is illegal. Will it matter that it is illegal in Country C, or will it be understood that you're obviously not trying to bring it into Country C?
As long as you don't leave the secured area at the connecting airport and its doesn't require you to go through customs then you should have no problem taking the prescription medication with you. Just make sure you have your prescription with you from your doctor.
Someone help!!!! I’m in Singapore flying to Frankfurt on Singapore airlines and then flying to Barcelona on Lufthansa I have no idea what I’m meant to do what is Schengen?? Helpppo
Schengen is basically a territory that includes most EU countries including Germany and Spain. You are most likely going to have to go through a border and security check once you arrive in Frankfurt before catching your connecting flight to Barcelona. You also might need a visa depending on your nationality.
If you booked the flights together on the same reservation then 2 hours will be plenty of time. If you booked the flights separately and have to recheck a bag then 2 hours might not be enough time at JFK.
Hi i want to ask that can i book a connecting flight separately with two different airlines ? As i want to travel to dubai via flydubai and dubai to saudia via saudi airlines. So is it possible? And i have a layover for 8 hour's at dubai airport do i need a visa for layover at airport?
Yes, you can book flights on two different airlines. If you are checking bags you will have to collect them after the first flight and then recheck them with the second airline. You will also need to get a transit visa once in Dubai.
While taking the connecting flight how many times I need to clear the immigration? Do I need to clear as many times as the number of connecting flight?
In most cases you won't need to leave the transit area to reclaim your luggage if you are going to be rechecking it on another airline. However, it depends on the airport and country you are flying into. Some countries will require you to get a visa even if you are just rechecking your luggage.
I need to write something I'm traveling for the first time and I have the flight North Macedonia - Warsaw - Warsaw- Toronto, so I have 40min to go to counter. I'm so affraid that I'm gonna miss my flight, affraid that I'm not gonna make on time. I'm scared that I'll be lost 😏😶 First I need to pass automated border control or border control or is the same thing I need to pass that? How I will know on which counter should I go 😭 because I need to go to connection flight and not to take my laggage, I think that I'm gonna go on wrong side? 🤦♀️
Hi Nik, 40 minutes is a short connection time but the Warsaw airport only has one terminal so as long as your flight to Warsaw isn’t delayed I think you can make it. If you are able to try and sit towards the front of the plane. For border control you won’t have to worry about getting lost since it will be your only option to go to when you get off the plane. After that you can head straight to your next flight. I hope everything goes smoothly for you and that you have an enjoyable first flight!
@@BenDreamVacations Thank you so much One more question, the gate number for my connected flight will be in my ticket when I land in Warsaw airport or will be given to me when I lend from my country to Warsaw?
@@nik4548 you can find gate numbers a few different ways. The best way is on the airline’s website under flight status. You can also sign up to receive text messages from the airline that notify you of gate numbers as well as any delays. Gate numbers will also be displayed inside the airport on digital screens throughout the airport.

Hi! I booked a flight through the philippine airlines website. STL to LA (American Airlines) LA to Manila, Philippines(Philippine airlines) Manila to Cebu, Philippines (Philippine airlines) Where should I recheck my luggages?
Hello! I am flying internationally in 4 days for my very first time & have a connecting flight. I have no clue what to do & am super nervous & scared. what are some things i need to know ? Please help me
if its your first time the best thing you could do is ask the people that work there and some may be rude about it because they most likely get asked the same question dozens of times everyday but don’t worry too much about it it’s better to know what you’re doing rather than trying to do everything by yourself in your first time flying
You will need to check with the airline you are flying on to see if you will need to collect your luggage during your layover. Some airlines will only hold your luggage for a maximum number of time.
If you have to re-check luggage, you will have to leave the secured area to get your luggage from baggage claim and then re-check your luggage with the next airline. Once you do that you will have to go back through security to get to the gate of your next flight.
It will depend on the airline but most will hold your luggage for you and transfer it onto your next flight as long it’s in with the same airline or a partner airline. They will also tell you at check-in whether or not you will have to pick up your luggage at the connection point.
You won’t need a visa if you just have connecting flights and stay in the secured area. However, if you were to leave the secured area then you would be subject whatever the visa requirements are for that country.
The airline will move it over to the next plane for you unless you booked them as two separate flights. If that is the case you will need to pick up your luggage from baggage claim and then check them in with the next airline.
After you have landed and gotten off your first flight look for a departures display board and look for the airline and flight number to find where the gate of your next flight is located. You can also look this up on your phone by going to the airline's website and click on flight status. Type in your flight number and it will tell you the gate number of your next flight. Once you know the gate number look for signs leading you to where your gate is.
What questions can I help answer?
Ben, what if I don´t have any luggage but just my hand luggage. Do I need to get out the terminal and check in all over again? Or I can just move internally to the next gate and make the checkin for the next fligth inside connection flights area?
If your flying internationally and have an hour between arrival and when the connecting flight departs is that enough time? Do you have to go through tsa again at second airport?
@@bigcmcg3946 Will your connecting flight be in another country?
@@BenDreamVacations departing and connecting flight will be in the United states. Final destination is international however.
@@bigcmcg3946 In that case an hour should be fine as long as you don't experience any delays. You will not have to go through TSA again at the connecting airport.

Great information and pretty important stuff to know. My wife and I are doing a Vancouver to Manila trip in October Air Canada /ANA with a two hour layover at Narita. I did the same flight several years ago and thankfully the luggage was moved for me.

Glad it was helpful!

Yes, you would need to take a plane to California and then onto Japan. You won’t have to check for your bag in California as long as you book your flights on one ticket and not as separate flights. I like to use google flights to search for my flights and once I find the flight that I like I book directly with that airline.

You will only have to go through customs once in Canada. It will be the first airport in Canada you arrive into.
@@BenDreamVacations Thanks! That makes sense. Now I can plan where to pad the layover!

@@BenDreamVacations thank you so much Ben for a swift reply and your videos are really insightful.

Hello, I have a flight from RSW (FL) connecting at PHI (PA) to LIS (Lisbon Portugal)
Would I only have to worry about checking in my luggage at RSW?

Are there countries that require you to have a visa for the specific country/countries you're self-transfering at?
Yes, some countries require a transit visa when connecting through their country but sometimes it depends on which country you are coming from.
Hey do we require a transit visa for the connecting country when we fly in separate airlines ?
It will depend on the country you are traveling to. Each country has their own rules about transit visas. Canada for example requires a transit visa even if you are just connecting on your way to another country. For most others as long as you stay in the airport you would not need a visa.
If you have 1 layover, and going to the first airport, do you get both tickets for both flights in Airport 1?
As long as you didn’t book each flight separately then you will receive both tickets at the first airport.

Since you will have to leave the international transit area to recheck your luggage you will need to get Portugal's airport transit visa.
I like your explanation, but is it the same for my problem. I'm flying Singapore Airlines from Brisbane Australia then catching another connecting Singapore Airlines Flight to Thailand. There will possibly be a waiting time of 2 hours. My query, When I get off the Plane from Brisbane in Changi Airport do I just follow the sign saying Transfer ( Number I will be given to me I hope?) Do I need to go through Immigration or Arrival. I realize I will go through Security before boarding, have I got this in a nut shell ha! ha! I want to say I'm a 75 year old Gentleman and yes I'm asking please for guidance and sincere help! John. 😊 Take Care

You will need to recheck your luggage once you arrive in Manila
Hi Kambree, will this be your first time flying ever or just your first international flight?
What about if you have 19 hrs layover with same airline?
You will need to check with the airline you are flying on to see if you will need to collect your luggage during your layover. Some airlines will only hold your luggage for a maximum number of time.
So does that mean you have to check out from your first airport then check back in again then start your second flight journey?
If you have to re-check luggage, you will have to leave the secured area to get your luggage from baggage claim and then re-check your luggage with the next airline. Once you do that you will have to go back through security to get to the gate of your next flight.
What if the connection is more than 24hrs later ?
It will depend on the airline but most will hold your luggage for you and transfer it onto your next flight as long it’s in with the same airline or a partner airline. They will also tell you at check-in whether or not you will have to pick up your luggage at the connection point.
What about visa??? For different airlines and u r transiting say for 5hours
You won’t need a visa if you just have connecting flights and stay in the secured area. However, if you were to leave the secured area then you would be subject whatever the visa requirements are for that country.
What if I have a 12 hour layover, where will I check-in my baggage?
The airline will move it over to the next plane for you unless you booked them as two separate flights. If that is the case you will need to pick up your luggage from baggage claim and then check them in with the next airline.
I have a Toronto - Vancouver- Shanghai, with Air Canada, I hope my baggage are transferred
Since your connecting flight is within Canada your baggage should be automatically be transferred to the next flight for you.
Actually after i land my first flight , what is the process to climb second flight tell me step by step
