    I grew up flying through Atlanta (RDU to BHM monthly), so I know the airport pretty well. On my own I wouldn’t sweat it. Thanks for this video. I needed the motivation!

    • @barryfletcher7136
      @barryfletcher7136 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to call Delta and ask if 35 minutes is a "legal" amount of time to change planes. If yes then you are OK as missing your connection just means you + your luggage will simply be re-booked on a later flight. HOWEVER, if 35 minutes is > not < a legal connection time then you need to change your tickets. If you bought your tickets from Delta then you are probably OK except you will probably miss your onward flight and delta will re-book you. If you bought your tickets from a travel agency then they may have sold you tickets that won't be honored by Delta if you miss your connection due to the too-short connection time. .

    We have a saying here in the South that wherever your destination may be after you die, you have to go through Atlanta to get there. My house is literally one mile from Hartfield-Jackson and another true marvel about the airport is despite the proximity, I never hear air noise except when heavy storms move into the area and the take-off trajectories are changed to avoid the storm. This terminal was opened in 1981, replacing the old airport and she’s not the prettiest or most sophisticated airport, but she sure gets the job done.

    I missed the old days when US airways and Southwest would let you make 20 minute connections. It is really amazing how fast bags get off one aircraft and get on another aircraft. I just recently had a 25 minute layover in Denver because of a delay on the inbound aircraft I was flying on. I love a 1 hour connection. It is my sweet spot. I have had many Delta quick turns and I seek out these walk off and walk on flights. Delta is usually good at quick turns. I have had a failure with United with a quick turn but it was foggy weather.
    I LOVE to feel the RUSH. A tip I have is to use the magazine's airport maps to see where you need to walk to. These are usually at the end of the magazine with aircraft dimensions. TripIt I found tells you how long it will take you to walk it. Love the videos. Keep up the great work. Calm down, we will make it is what I told my brother recently.

    I had an experience with US Airways once connecting LGA-PIT-DFW. The LGA-PIT leg was delayed (of course), and the PIT-DFW leg was already fully boarded (except for me) when we landed in PIT. The FAs asked everyone to remain seated when we got to the gate, and had me deplane first. Fortunately I only had a carry-on and they held the PIT-DFW flight for me! I was flying back from LaGuardia last September. I had to run and get a rapid COVID test, and then I had to run to the Delta Terminal to check in and then go through security. And boy, everything they say about LaGuardia is true. Security was a nightmare to get through. Not only that, the gate agents weren't even sure if they could let me on the plane, so I was stuck at the gate, while a full plane of passengers were probably anxious to get home to Minneapolis from New York. there is a term for these types of connections called SHOCON. aka short connection. and usually, bags that are shocon will likely be put on the plane last and taken off first. there may even be a dedicated cart that brings over those bags to the new plane from the old plane without all the hassle of going through the bagage system.

    Missed my 36 minute connection through ATL just yesterday as a matter of fact. Route was FLL-ATL-MSP. First leg was delayed 15 minutes which would have been fine as that flight typically lands early. Mother Nature had other plans and we had to fly around a storm adding about 30 minutes. Was auto re-booked on a new flight today but luckily ATL-MSP being hub to hub I was able to get one of the last seats on the last flight out yesterday. Oh and the planes were 757s so a 36 minute connection having to change terminals in that airport is insane.

      Thank you for mentioning the importance of the aircraft used. Most don’t consider how long it will take them to get off an airplane through a single door, because that’s all we in the US are mentally capable of doing. De-planing a full regional jet takes about 15-20 minutes. A full A320/737 takes about 30-40 minutes, from the point the plane opens the door to empty. A 757 will take up to 45. Twin aisle planes are slightly more efficient, but also larger, so an A330/787 (shorter versions) will take the same 45, but longer versions and A350/777s can take 50+. If you have an additional jetway, that will at least deplane the premium passengers separately. The A380 manages to do it in the same 50 minutes (approximately) because it uses 3 jetways.
      So yes, sitting in the front of a tiny jet may take 5 minutes to get out, but in the back of a big one may take 30+ minutes.

      Yeah this is good advice. I recently had to take an International flight out of KSFO but I had to take a connecting flight on Alaskan. We had like 2 hours to get to our gate and get our boarding passes.

      also it helps with bags as you normally have to checkin separately (unless they are both part of les say Star Alliance, One World etc.)
      Even international->National flights have bagage drop-of after you cleared customs, super efficient

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not entirely correct. The issue isn’t different airlines, but rather separate tickets. Different airlines on a single ticket are still responsible for your entire itinerary. On the other hand, if you purchase separate tickets on the same airline, they are not responsible for your connection.

    • @veejaygorospe6160
      @veejaygorospe6160 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's fine for codeshare routes (e.g. Delta-KLM) since the entire trip would be booked under one of the airline's flight numbers and reservation number (e.g. Delta flight numbers with a Delta confirmation number for a Delta-to-KLM connection). They route bags and communicate to the other airline that you are a connecting passenger. If something goes wrong at that point, it's the responsibility of the airline you booked.
      I would be hesitant on any interline connections (with separate flight numbers and/or reservation numbers). Yes they have an agreement to route bags, but I avoid it nowadays. I had a United-USAir HNL-SFO-PHL flight in the past (when US Air was still around and they had an interline agreement with fellow StarAlliance member United). When I got to PHL and USAir didn't have my checked bag, they basically said "it wasn't our fault". I still got the bag at the end of the day (the bag got on a later USAir flight and they delivered it to my house). But I definitely was not happy and I wouldn't try that again.

    I came up from Orlando on a Delta L1011 to Atlanta in 1994. Horrible storms delayed my flight and connection to Denver. I saw so many Delta planes it made my head spin. My special meal went bye bye. But I got to Denver to start my Parks and Canyonlands trip. Greetings from Melbourne down under. Thanks to Delta for their kind help to a young tourist from far away.

    haha, loved the bloopers :) Even though you had great weather and flights, I have had a flight when my leg was broken, my flight from Melbourne to Sydney was delayed, when I at last got to Sydney my plane was supposed to take off in 5 mins, as soon as I got out of my Melbourne flight, a lovely ground crew gave me a wheel chair and wheeled me to my next flight. They held it back just for me!! I have lots of faith in the airport system, at least in Australia!!

    I had a 1h 20min connection at Heathrow yesterday, from VS at T3 to Aer Lingus at T2, I made it in plenty of time but bags did not. Thankfully they made the next flight and got delivered to me today but I was told checking in that 1h 20 is too short at Heathrow between terminals. MCT in LHR is 90mins for inter terminals, 60min for same terminal. Atlanta is excellent! Great video, thanks very much for sharing!

    Dear Jeb and Suzzane: I think the two of you make such a beautiful couple and you are both extremely lucky to have each other and have such beautiful humanity... The two can make such a difference in the world if you decide to add in your trips a human factor in your adventures. You don't need examples for the two of you are bright and imaginative and add a mission every time you fly to help others in need. You could ask Unicef or any organization if you could become an envoy of goodwill every time you fly... Just the two of going to a children's hospital and bringing that beautiful energy and making the kids laugh with funny stories and anecdotes from your trips and adventures and, of course, without saying, to bring some toys to them... You remember how good it felt to have a toy or something when you were sick and family members came to visit you and cheer you up. So, think about it, you can make such a difference... The two of you are simply magical together... May G_d bless you abundantly.

We connect in Atlanta to get to Toyoko. My husband, who used to travel a lot for work, says we have plenty of time to reach our connection, and Delta assured me it's within a the "legal" amount of time for a connection. I feel a bit more positive about our chances after watching this.

    I'll be going through Atlanta in November coming out of Amsterdam and going to Tampa. My original schedule had a 2hrs5m layover, which I ultimately decided would be a bit short. I'd have to get from concourse E to F walking, go through CBP, get my suitcase, go through customs, drop off my suitcase, go through security and get to the gate for my connecting flight (probably at concourse A or B). For me, that was just cutting it too close, so I've changed my connecting flight, so I'll have 4hrs15m, which gives me a lot of peace of mind 🙂

    I've missed flights before just because my flight was way late. Never had an issue getting on the next flight even with the rock bottom non-refundable non-changeable flights even when the booking was done on a separate ticket. It's helpful to choose the airline with the most frequent trips just in case you miss a particular connecting flight.
    One time my flight was late and the connecting flight was on the same airline. The connecting plane left the gate but the staff figured out there was a small group of passengers arriving late for their connection. She used her radio to stop the plane and got us on a bus to get to the plane. The baggage made it on time as well. You need part 2 of this video--the terminal doesn't look that busy--must pick a busy time.

I would love to see a regional economy video on a Delta Embraer E-175! There’s not very many good trip reports of the Delta E-175 on TH-cam, and even fewer cover what the average American flies-economy. I would love to see it from this channel!

    I fly through atl for day trips about once a month. Typically this starts at CHA my home airport then ATL and on to my meeting for the day. RDU, GSP, CLT, DTW, JFK, DCA or another east-coast airport. And then back. This means usually 4 flights in one day and with generally close connections. Only a handful of times have issues prevented me from making the appointments. I fly mostly Delta and they have an amazing team and do a fantastic job providing safe and on-time flights. BONUS: I usually prefer an hour connection time in ATL. (Now I know why you were seated way back there) from my instagram comment. Also love your content. :)

    And I just had to do this again last night. CLT -> ATL -> SLC with a 56 minute connection, the CLT-ATL flight got delayed 30 minutes, meaning that by the time we were off the plane we had about 10 minutes to go from E30 to B7. Made it, but just barely. Our bags made it too. The Delta app actually tried to rebook our flight out of CLT to 8:40 the next morning, but I didn't see the notification until I was on the ground in ATL.

It was awkward boarding alone when everyone was already seated.

    I have had short connections like that at ATL, MSP and SLC. I have made all of them, but I do try and sit toward the front of the plane on most of my flights. If I am flying international I usually try to give myself at least a couple hours at the connecting airport in case of delays. That came in handy one time when I was supposed to have 5 or 6 hours at LAX before flying to New Zealand. I was delayed for about 3 hours in SLC due to having to change aircraft. I was traveling on separate tickets for the domestic and international parts of that trip because it was cheaper. When I arrived at LAX I had to get my bag, check in with Air New Zealand and go back through security, ended up with almost 2 hours to spare by time I was through security! Going back to Australia and New Zealand later this year, hopefully no issues!

    I leave at least an hour and a half for domestic travel and 3 hours for international flights. But I prefer as much time as possible because I hate to run to gates.
    I once "missed" my connection in Detroit because my first flight arrived late. The gate agent called and got permission to reopen the door to allow me to board the flight due to the fact the plane was still parked at the gate. All the seats were taken, so they bumped up to first/business class. This was on Northwest.
    I used to fly through ATL all the time, and I learned to leave as much time as possible due to the size of the airport. I spent a night there in some big chair due to a blizzard which hit Long Island the day after Christmas which closed all NY airports.
