Short checking is also useful for travel hacks where an itinerary is booked , but the final leg of the itinerary isn't going to be used. A flight from numerous US cities to Frankfurt, Germany to Munich is often cheaper than a flight from numerous US cities to Frankfurt as the final destination. Short check luggage on a cheaper flight booked without getting on the plane from Frankfurt to Munich. This is especially useful when doing these types of hacks with self transfer flights. Frankfurt may not be the final destination, as a another ticket was booked to fly Frankfurt to another destination. This is also referred to as a positioning flight.
Thanks for your video! I hold a Vietnamese passport, have a tourist visa to Ecuador and The United States. I will have flights from Vietnam to Quito (Ecuador), but with 5 hours transit in Miami. Do I need to recheck my baggage and go through immigration in Miami? Thanks much!
Hi! Yes, anytime you have to connect through the U.S. you will have to recheck your luggage unless the airport you are flying out of offers what's called preclearance which will allow you to go through customs and immigration from the departure airport. None of the airports you mentioned offers preclearance so expect to recheck your luggage once you arrive in Miami.
The video is very informative and for which we thank you a lot. Advise if I have to collect my luggage at KLIA while flying from Thailand to Mauritius with a transit at KLIA as I bought one ti jet with the transit. Await your reply. God bless Manoj
Your video is great help for newbie like me. As I will be traveling to Las Vegas. I’m trying to collect as much info I could get. I have 2 stops. 1 in Haneda Airport (2hrs 5 mins) and the 2nd stop would be at LAX (2 hrs 10 mins). 1st qn: Is it consider International flight to Domestic flight? 2nd qn: at my 2nd stop (which is at LAX), I have to collect my luggage and re-checking and go through security checks again?
Yes, it would be an international flight to domestic flight to Las Vegas once you land in LAX. In LAX you will be required to go through immigration and customs and recheck your luggage before heading to your next flight.
Hi, thank you this is very helpful. I just want to confirm. Returning home to the Philippines. I will be coming from Vancouver and have a layover in LAX going to Japan. Do I have to recheck my luggages again and go through customs before going to my gate for the connecting flight?
@@BenDreamVacations thank you for your reply. It will be my first time there and i only have an hour and a half to reach my connecting flight. Will that still be enough time? From terminal 6 to terminal B and go through rechecking luggage then customs? 😔
An hour and a half is going to be really tight. You can expect to get through customs in LAX between 30-90 minutes depending on the time of day. If you are able to rebook for a longer layover that's what I would do. A 2 to 3 hour layover would be ideal. If you are unable to rebook then I think there is a fair chance that you could miss your connecting flight. The airline will rebook you as long as you booked both flights together and not separately but the next available flight could be the next day.
Hi! I have a layover at sydney airport (on my way to New Zealand). Do you happen to know the procedure for sydney airport and do you think 2hrs 25 min window is enough for rechecking?
Hi Ben! Thanks a lot for the great information you gave us. I booked a flight with Air france, my first flight is from Pittsburgh, PA to JFK by delta airlines, then from jfk to paris cdg then paris to Rabat, Morocco. Do i need to claim my luggage in JFK then go check it again in air france and go to customs again? Ps: all the flights are from one ticket from the air france website.
Air France and Delta are partner airlines so you can expect your bags to be checked all the way to Morocco as long as your flights were booked on one ticket. You won’t need to go through customs until you arrive in Rabat.

Hello! I have a 7 hour layover in LAX via Eva Air from Taipei, and LAX to Toronto via WestJet. It will be grateful for your help. What's the process/step by step process of going outside the airport? I was hoping to meet my uncle and grab some breakfast at in n out just near the airport. p.s I have a valid US visa. Thank you so much
Since you have a valid US visa the process is fairly simple. Once you deplane in LAX you need to collect your checked luggage if you have any and then go through customs and immigration. Once you are through you can recheck your luggage with WestJet and then you are free to exit the airport to meet up with your uncle. Just make sure to give yourself plenty of time to go back through security for your flight to Toronto. 2 hours should be enough time unless you need to check-in with WestJet and get your boarding pass in which case give yourself even longer. I hope that helps, Let me know if you have more questions for me.
Hi Ben, great helping information in your video. I am flying from India to Hawaii on flights booked under same ticket with 2 Airlines - Qatar and American Airlines. From India to Qatar to LA. At LA I have AA flight which is in partnership with Qatar Airlines. I wanted to know what all I need to do step by step after Landing in LA and before getting onto my AA flight. I have a 3 hrs layover in LA. Many thanks in Advance for your guidance.
Hi! First you will need to make sure you get a tourist visa to be able to enter the U.S. Once you arrive in LA, you will have to clear immigration once you get off the plane. At immigration you will need to present your passport, visa, and health certificates. After clearing immigration your will need to collect your bag and clear customs. Since both airlines are under the same ticket your bag will be tagged to the final destination already so you can just drop it at the transfers desk after customs. You can then make your way to your connecting terminal and gate. Have a great time in Hawaii!
Hi Ben! Thank you for the helpful explanation. I'm planning to book a flight from Jakarta (CGK) to Toronto (YYZ) and I currently have 2 options. 1. Jakarta (CGK) - Tokyo (NRT) by Japan Airlines - Tokyo (NRT) - Los Angeles (LAX) by Japan Airlines - Los Angeles (LAX) - Toronto (YYZ) by West Jet 2. Jakarta(CGK) - Tokyo(NRT) by Japan Airlines Tokyo(NRT) - Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) by American Airlines Dallas-Fort Worth(DFW) - Toronto(YYZ) by American Airlines *I found both option in Japan Airlines' website, so I suppose that they have partnerships (?) Which one do you think is better? Is it true that I have to recheck my luggages in the US and Canada? If Japan Airlines can give me 2 free checked luggage, does it applicable until I arrive in Toronto? Or should I pay additional fees when changing airlines? Thank you in advance!
I would personally go with option 2 but check the connection times. You will have to recheck your luggage in the U.S. so I would make sure you have a connection time of at least 2 hours. You are also going to need a travel authorization to be able to change flights in the U.S. It's called an ESTA. Once in Toronto you will have to collect your bags agian and go through Canadian Customs.
@@BenDreamVacationsdo i need an ESTA when i already have an american B1 B2 visa? im doing the same flight as the main commenter but im arriving at Vancouver (YVR) instead of toronto
From abudhabi im landing at terminal A in boston and i have a change of terminal for a connecting flight to orlando...should i collect my checked bags in terminal A of boston or in the change of terminal sir
There are some exceptions. If connecting through Miami or Dallas Ft Worth on American from one country to another country you don’t need to reclaim your bags. They will be transferred to your next flight. The check in agent will need to attach a red ITI (I International to International) label to your bag. So flying London to Dallas to Cancun. On arrival in Dallas you need to clear US Immigrstion then walk through customs without reclaiming your bag then go back through security to your next flight.
@@BenDreamVacations I just travel between the UK and Mexico and I know that it’s through checked at Dallas and Miami but not at JFK or Charlotte. I know DelTa are looking to offer through checked bags from certain places in China to US domestic destinations via Atlanta but I don’t think it’s in place yet.
Sometimes the airport website will have information on it but for the most part it's difficult for find out which airports have dedicated rechecks if you have never been to that airport before. They way I usually find it is through blogs.
Hello Ben , Thanks for such an informative video . I have a connecting flight from Winnipeg to Ottawa and then Ottawa to Montreal and Montreal to India . I booked my flights from one site altogether. Do I need to go through customs in Ottawa and Montreal ?
Hello Ben. It's will be so greatfull if you can help me. So i am going from uk glasgow to stuttgart germany via Amsterdam. I have 40 minute's for change time how do you think that time will be enough? Thanks in advance😊😊😊 😊😊😊
40 minutes is probably not enough time. You will have to go through passport control in Amsterdam because you are flying into a Schengen country (Netherlands) from a non Schengen country (UK). You will need extra time to go through that process.
I’m flying from LAX to Miami on American. Then switching airlines to BoA going from Miami to Santa Cruz. Then I have another flight on BoA from Santa Cruz, Bolivia to Tarija, Bolivia. I have 2.5 hours at the Miami airport before my flight to Santa Cruz; this is my first time traveling alone internationally, so I’m scared I won’t have time to navigate everything if I recheck luggage, go through security, find the international terminal, etc
Hi Sara, 2.5 hours should be enough time if you have to recheck your luggage. Ideally the whole process should take no more than an hour and a half to complete but at peak times it might take longer. It just depends on how busy Miami is at the time.

Hi Ben, I’m taking my first connecting flight in October . Edinburgh to Las Vegas with a two hour stop over in Washington DC. All booked as one ticket with United Airlines. I’m so nervous I’m going to miss the connection to Vegas if I need to recheck my bag and go through security again
Hi Ben, I will be going to Italy on March 2024, I'm flying out of LAX and have a layover in NY (Newark), the layover is an hour and a half. On my way back I have a layover in Germany for the same amount of time, am I gonna have to recheck my bags in any of these stops. United is my departing airline and Lufthansa is my returning airline, I booked my flights on the Lufthansa website. Your help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks 🙂
As long as both your United flights and Lufthansa flights were booked together and on the same reservation you won’t need to recheck your luggage in Newark or in Germany.
Ben! I fly to Los Cabo Mexico. Returning- 1st flight to Las Vegas with a connection to DFW. Id like to stay in Las Vegas but I want my luggage. Will I be able to get my bags and just miss the connection? Delta flight If that matters. Thanks for your time
Purposely missing a connecting flight is something the airlines have been cracking down on and it can even get you banned so I wouldn’t recommend doing it. But if you still want to go through with it you can ask Delta if you can short check your luggage to Vegas. They may agree to it depending on how long the connecting time is but it could also be a red flag for them and may deny the request.
Hello ben, i have a flight from los angeles to san francisco with Alaska airlines, after a two hour window i have a flight to tokio but with japan airlines, i bought all the tickets in one payment tho. Do you think ill need to recheck my luggage? Its my first time leaving the country so im kinda lost, and great video, its really helpfull
@@eliasparedes5669 It is going to hard to determine from a third party website how they booked the flights. Alaska and Japan Airlines have a partnership but it's possible the third party website booked them as two separate flights. If you have one reservation number for both flights then more than likely your bags will be checked through and you won't have to recheck them in San Francisco. The best way to tell will be once you print out your bag tags. If it says SFO then you will need to recheck in San Francisco and if it says HND then you will just pick them up in Tokyo.
Hi Ben, good video but i still need a bit of help. I have a flight from amsterdam with KLM to frankfurt and i will fly from frankfurt to vietnam with VIETNAM AIRLINES. Flying from Dublin back into the US (JFK) with Delta airlines. We go through customs and immigration at Dublin, so we don't have to do that again at JFK. Our final destination is Cincinnati. Would our bags be transferred over to our final flight? Or do we have to recheck them in?
You will have to go through customs and immigration once you arrive in JFK. You will have to collect your luggage, go through customs and immigration and then there will be a bag drop where you will drop off your luggage. Then you will be able to proceed to your next flight.
Oh yes, I forgot Dublin offers a US preclearance now. The last time I was in Dublin they didn't have that available. Once you go through preclearance in Dublin your bags will go through a separate, secure processing system. This will allow the airline to transfer your bags to the next flight in JFK without you having to pick them up and rechecking them.
Lovely! This video is of great help, very informative! I am wondering, so i got international flight with a domestic layover, i need to recheck my baggage in different airport after my domestic flight for my final international flight, i got lots of baggage so can i just checked in my baggage on my final flight and skip to check in on my domestic flight? Because there is a service for sending baggage to the airport here. Hence i plan to just send it to my final final flught and check in there, do you think it’s fine? Or i only able to recheck in the baggage that is registered as a check in baggage from the previous domestic flight, perhaps they only got the same tag or something? Thank you beforehand!❤
If I understand you correctly, your first flight is a domestic flight but then you change airports in order to catch your international flight? Either way you are going to have to get your baggage to the other airport for your international flight so if there is a service available that will send your luggage there ahead of time that would work as long as you know how the service works. Does the airline receive the baggage or does it go to a holding area where you have to claim it? The domestic flight is not going to transfers your luggage to the other airport so you would have to collect it and self transfer everything to the next airport. I would personally go with the luggage service to avoid having to carry extra luggage to the next airport.
@@BenDreamVacations thank you very much! You got my point to the T! My concern was that the baggage could only be rechecked if it got some kind of tag or anythin from my domestic flight. It really relieves me. By the way, the luggage transport is operated by some company so they gonna hold my baggage there for me to collect at the airport. Thank you very much!
hi Ben, at 4:23 you said that if our flight goes to canada we have to recheckin our luggage.. my question is do I need the visa for recheckin the luggage?
I stumbled onto your video today and I have a question. I have been googling all over and not getting a comprehensive answer. Maybe you can help? I have a trip planned for the summer. I booked 2 separate flights HAM -(MUC)-WAW on Lufthansa and then like 4.5 hrs later flight WAW-YYZ on LOT. How will this work with a checked bag? Do I need to go through passport control, pick up bag, essentially leave the airport only to re-enter and re-check my bag, go through security again, etc? All help is appreciated..
If you booked Lufthansa and LOT separately then you are going to have to collect your bags and recheck them once you are in WAW. That will mean leaving the secured area, going through passport and immigration, rechecking your bags with LOT and then go through security again. 4.5 hours will be enough time to do all of those steps.
@@BenDreamVacations Thank you for your prompt reply! I was hoping to avoid this long procedure. But I am going J on LOT so I should be able to get through check in and security faster.
Hey I’m going to Mexico City and my flight leaves from Portland to Las Vegas but I have to recheck my bags in Las Vegas do I have to check in with the new airline that is taking me to Mexico City or how exactly I have to do it. My lay over in Las Vegas is like 2 hours is that’s enough time for December 22?
If you booked 2 separate airlines then yes, you will need to exit the secured area down to baggage claim to pick up your bags then check-in with the next airline and go through security again. Normally 2 hours would probably be enough time to do all that but since it's around Christmas time the check-in and security lines will most likely be longer than normal so if you can give yourself more time that would help.
Hi! I am flying from India to New zealand with 2.5 hour stop at sydney. I have 2 questions: 1. Do I need a transit visa? 2. I think I have to collect my back and recheck plus go through security and immigration. My question is, even though my flights are 2 different airlines but I booked them together from KAYAK and have the same PNR number. Does this mean I might not have to recheck again? Thanks
Yes, you will need a transit visa for your connecting flight in Sydney. Whether or not you will have to recheck your bags depends on a couple of factors. One, if the two airlines have a partnership with each other it is possible that you may not have to recheck luggage. However, because the Sydney airport has 3 terminals that are not connected, if you have to go from one terminal to another you will be required to collect your luggage and go through security at the other terminal for your connecting flight. 2 hours should be enough time to accomplish this if you end up having to switch terminals.
Hi, I am booking a flight from Italy to Australia, I have an autonomous transfer from Amsterdam to Xiamen and another one from Melbourne to Canberra, if I already payed the 800$ ticket to fly from Italy to Australia but I have those 2 autonomous transfers, does that mean that I have to pay not only the 800$ flight but also the 2 self transfers? If so, how much will the 2 self transfers cost me? Are they cheap? Thank you for your reply.
Are all your flights booked together under the same reservation? If so, then there shouldn't be any additional cost even if there are self transfers involved. However, you might need to pay extra for choosing seats or if you plan to check a bag.
I have a flight to Atlanta from the UK but then i have a connecting flight to Nashville. Will I need to recheck my bags at Atlanta or will they pass over straight onto the Nashville flight. Both flights were booked at the same time through Virgin. I just keep getting told different things online. Thanks
Anytime you enter the U.S. you will always have to recheck your bags at the first point of entry and go through customs even for US citizens. I was actually just in Atlanta on a flight. The good news is that you won’t have to go through security again after you go customs but just know that if you land in an E gate it’s just over a half a mile walk to get to customs which is located in the F terminal.
Hlo sir I'm travelling from India to canada through bangkok and my flights are of seperate pnr . I have to recheck my bag at Bangkok airport , does a transit visa is required ?? Layover time is 3 hours

You will only have to go through immigration and customs once when you arrive in JFK. In JFK you will be required to collect your bags prior to going through customs and then drop them off once you are through customs. After that you won’t have to worry about collecting your bags or going through immigration again in Chicago. Your bags will automatically be transferred over to the next flight for you.
If you need to leave the secured area to recheck luggage then you will need a airport transit visa. If your final destination is at another EU country then you will need to apply for a regular Schengen Visa (Type C)

Hi Ben, I’m taking a flight in the summer from Belgrade Serbia to Boston with a layover at LHR. I have 3 hours in between but I’m booking my flight to London with Air Serbia and to Boston on points with virgin. Any suggestions on what to do with a checked bag, 3 hours is a good amount of time but LHR is so big and going between terminals and waiting in lines can get ugly just for a checked bag.
If your flights were booked together on the same ticket then your bag should check all the way through to Boston in which case you won't have to worry about collecting your bag in LHR. If your flights were booked separately then you will have to collect your bag in LHR and then check it in at Arrivals. 3 hours should be plenty of time either way. The downside to LHR is that you do have to take a bus between terminals and go through a security check so it does take a little bit longer than other airports.

I guess the other thing you can do is rework your flights and connect through another country.

That is going to be a tough connection to make. Try to get a seat at the front of the plane and come up a backup plan in case you miss your connection.
You need to know if Boarding is at 9 👉 departure will be 9:30 or 9:40 👉 closing will be: if it’s bridge 8min before departure 👉 or if you have to take Bus first 15min before departure.
Hi, please guide me on my query regarding self transfer and transit visa requirements at Istanbul airport. I will travel from Mumbai India to Istanbul through Indigo airline, will have long layover of 11 Hours. Then need to connect next flight from Istanbul to Iasi, Romania through Wizz Air. Also I have to arrange Self Transfer at Istanbul. Does it mean I have to collect my checked in luggage at Istanbul and re-check again? Also, do I need Transit Visa for Istanbul. I will not leave the airport during layover.
I’ll be flying to South Korea through Air Canada with a 1.5hr layover in Toronto, is that long enough? I would get a different flight but that is the only one that I can afford and that's in the timeframe that I am going
That should be enough time. All the Air Canada flights operate out of the same terminal so you shouldn't have to walk very far to get to your next flight. Safe travels to South Korea!
Hi Ben..thank you for sharing..i have a question..i am travelling from Greece to San Domingo with a stop at JFK airport..both flights are operated from Delta airlines as a single ticket..my question is this..do i have to recheck my baggage at JFK airport..?? or my buggage will be sent from Greece directly to San Domingo??I am asking because my waitting time between the two flights are 2hours and 20 minutes and i am afraid it will be too tight .. thank you very much..
Yes, you will have to recheck baggage at JFK airport. You are also going to need an ESTA (travel authorization) and be vaccinated to be able to enter the US even for a connecting flight 👉 esta.cbp.dhs.gov/. The process is once you get off the plane in JFK you will have to go through immigration and present your passport, ESTA, and health certificates. After that you will need to collect your bags and go through customs. Once through customs there will be recheck counters for your bag. 2 hours should be enough time to complete all this as long as your flight arrives on time in JFK.
@@BenDreamVacations Thank you so much for your quick response..i really appreciatate it..only one more question..the process of rechecking my bags means that i have to wait to the line for a "a typical check in"..?or these recheck counters for bags are only for transit passengers..?
i have just read about some electronic kiosks called "automated passport control"..are these make the process more quicker at the immigration point..??or it will make things more confussing and complicated..? (i am travelling under visa waiver programm with ESTA visa..)..

Hello ben....thanku for sharing the information...i have a ques...i booked my flight from manila to chennai and there is a 4hrs layover in kula lampur and i need to self transfer from one termina to another like my next connecting flight is from different airport so do i need visa or go through immigration process in kula lampur airport....
I have booked my ticket from China to Kigali. With 2.45 hours layover in Dubai. I have one question All the flights are under one ticket and on the website It says baggage not checked through in Dubai. Meaning I have to collect my bags in Dubai International Airport Terminal 1, and recheck them in Dubai Dubai International Airport Terminal 2 for my connecting flight to Kigali. Do I need a transit visa for this?
So, I booked connecting flight tickets from ease my trip website (third party) and ticket have same PNR number. The airlines are Air India and Jetstar both are partners I think. My layover is in Singapore and from Delhi to Singapore I will come in Air India plane then I have next flight from different terminal (4) and my whole doubt was do I need to go to immigration again? That's because if I do then I need Singapore visa and if I have go through immigration then I also have to collect my bag, re check in and get boarding pass. I asked embassy and they said if you have to go through immigration, collect tickets or baggage then you are not considered transit passenger and you need visa. I asked my questions with Air India and Jetstar people and they are not sure if I have to collect my baggage at Singapore airport or not. But in recent email Air India guy said that I have to collect baggage and do check in and collect boarding pass again at Singapore airport. For some reasons I am not sure if I believe this or not because earlier customer care executives not sure about it and one also said I will get my baggage at final destination then he said oh terminal is changing so you have to collect baggage for more clarity I should go to airport. I am still very much confuse because on email airindia representatives did not answer my questions in detail. Can you help me in anyway? Does people still have to collect baggage and go through Immigration even if they have same pnr on ticket and airlines are partners. Btw Air India do not operate at T4 currently according to my research and Jetstar work there only.
Air India and Jetstar are partners so your bags should be transferred over to the next flight for you. As long as you have an onward ticket you won't need to go through customs and immigration when connecting in Singapore. You will however have a security check to go through before being allowed to go to the next flight.
Hi Ben, Thank you for the useful information! I have a question, would you know if I'm required to get a Transit Visa when transferring flight at Narita International Airport? I am arriving at Narita Terminal 1 and my next flight is at Terminal 2. I have two separate tickets and I might have to recheck my baggage there too.
You won’t need a visa as long as you don’t leave the departure area but if you booked your flights as separate tickets and you need to exit the secured area to go and recheck your luggage then a visa may be required. If you have a U.S. passport you can enter or transit through Japan without a visa.
I hope you see this in time but tomorrow i am flying from ATL to EWR to London. My layover from EWR to London is 1 hour. Is this a situation to where I have to recheck my bag? I’ve never flown internationally and I’ve never had a connecting flight before and it’s causing me a lot of anxiety
You won’t have to recheck your bag in EWR as long as you didn’t book each flight separately. And as long you don’t experience any delays out of ATL then you should have no problem making the connecting flight. Safe travels to London!
I have a connection flight from abudhabi to india as i am departing from another country in a different airline. Can i get boarding pass without passing immigration in abudhabi. For your information I didn't carry any checkin baggage.
If the airline you are flying on allows for online check-in then you can receive a boarding pass without having to go through customs and immigration. Just follow the signs to the transit desk. Also, check with the airline to make sure you don't need a visa to enter.

I want to book a flight from Manila- doha- Stockholm from Manila i will fly with Philippine airline to Doha. & to Doha to Stockholm Finnair you think i need to claim my luggage and recheck again? if need do i really need to go out and recheck in again? 12 hrs layover it is so much time.
Hi, I don't believe Philippine airlines and Finnair have a partnership so you would have to recheck your luggage in Doha. This means you will have to go through security again in order to recheck your bag.
Hi I'm going to Nova Scotia from India and I have a layover at Heathrow and Montreal. Till Montreal ita British Airways and from there it's Air Canada. And my layover @ Montreal is for 18hrs. So once I recheck my luggage then when should I put my luggage back for boarding ??
The earliest you can recheck your luggage would be 3 or 4 hours before departure. I believe Montreal has a cloakroom service where you can store your luggage until it’s time to check your luggage so you don’t have to haul it around with you during your layover.
Hello ben, thanks for the video. Is it possible that i face any problems in jordan or italy?
You shouldn't have any problems leaving Amman airport since I am assuming that is where you are from? For Italy, you won't need any type of visa as long as you stay in the transit area.
Hi Ben, I am Traveling from Chengdu China to Dubai (Sichuan Airline) where I have a 3-hour layover for my connecting flight to Tanznaia (Dar es Salaam) [Ethiopian Airline] And it has been noted that I will need to collect my baggage and check in again at Dubai. Will I need a Transit for a 3-hour layover? If yes can I get the Transit Visa at the airport in those 3 hours?
I don't believe you do if you are coming from China. If you do, the airline would have to apply for a transit visa on your behalf as you are not allowed to apply for one by yourself. So check with the airline to verify that you won't need a transit visa to enter Dubai.

Hello, I am traveling from Delhi to Barbados and I have booked separate flights from Delhi to Amsterdam by Qatar airways and from Amsterdam to Barbados by KLM. I have a 1:25 hrs layover in Amsterdam and I have to change terminal 3 to 2 in Amsterdam. is it possible to check-in the baggage directly to the destination and is 1:25 hrs enough if they ask to recheck-in the baggage in Amsterdam?
Unfortunately, it's not possible to check-in your baggage directly to Barbados. You will have to re-check it in Amsterdam. Having only an 1h 25min layover is going to be tight. Amsterdam has 6 runways so if you land at the farthest one it is going to take some time for the plane to arrive at the gate. Once you deplane you are going to have to wait for your luggage to unload to be able to pick it up. You will then have to go through Customs and then re-check your bag with KLM and then go back through security. It's not impossible but if you can give yourself more time I would do it.
@@dilkhushsaini6935 it will save a little bit of time but you will still need to physically check your bag in with the airline. You could check with KLM and see if you are able to check your bag at the gate instead of at the main check-in desk. This would allow you to stay in the secured area and not have to go through security again. It would save a lot of time.
What's does self transfer mean I'm flying from Manchester to kisumu But I'm going from Manchester to Cairo then from Cairo to Nairobi then Nairobi to kisumu as my final destination
A self transfer means that you are responsible for connecting to your next flight which would include collecting and rechecking your luggage between flights, clearing immigration and customs if needed and checking in and retrieving your boarding pass with the next airline.
I have booked my ticket from mumbai to canada. With 4 hours layover in Istanbul. I have two questions 1) on the website It says baggage not checked through. Does it mean i need to recheck my baggage at istanbul. 2) do i need a transit visa for this? Plz guide me as soon as possible its my first flight 😊
If it says baggage not checked through then you will need to collect your baggage in Istanbul and recheck it for the next flight. Since you have to do this, and without knowing more details, you most likely will need to get an e-visa.
I am going to have a 1hr 55min layover in LAX going to EWR from an international flight (SIA). Im actually wondering whether i'll have enough time for my connection to terminal 6 with alaska airline since i just realize that we have to go through baggage claim and custom in LAX before the connecting flight 😑 as for the baggage will i have to bring it to terminal 6 to get it check in or is there a transfer desk to put the bags after the custom? I am using one itinerary ticket for my whole flight so i assume that the baggage already have a tag for the final destination? Will i still have to go through security too? If yes, how long will it take to go through the security? I am very nervous and hoping that i can make the connection. Any info will be appreciated. TIA
2 hours might be enough time. Ideally you want 3 hours between flights just because you will need to leave the secured area to pickup your bags and then go through security again. The time it takes to pick up your bag, go through customs and then through security again can take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes to complete depending on the time of day. Hopefully you won't have to go far to reach your connecting flight.
Hi Ben, I am going to have a multi leg flight from Nice to Jakarta return. I am going to fly from Nice to Zurich with Swiss Air, Zurich to Singapore with Swiss Air and Singapore to Jakarta by Garuda Indonesia. And for the return I am going to fly from Jakarta to Beijing by China Airlines, Beijing to Frankfurt by Lufthansa, and Frankfurt to Nice by Lufthansa. All in single booking. So I guess that I don’t have to recheck in my luggage during the international transfer. Can you confirm me that I don’t need to recheck in my luggage during the transfer? And do you know that I need a transit visa for stop over in Beijing. Thanks a lot for your help.
For all the layover stops you mentioned your bags will be checked through all the way to your final destination as long as all your flights were booked together. If you booked your flights through a third party you might want to verify this. As for your Beijing layover you won’t need a transit visa as long as your layover is not more than 24 hours and you do not leave the transit area.
We have been issued 2 tickets with 2 pnrs and it says we have to collect our baggage and then check in again requiring us to exit and enter again . This will require a visa and time between the flights is only 2 hours . How can we do it. The ticketing agency should not have in the first place picked such a combination of airlines.
It can be done in 2 hours depending on the airports. If you are going to have to leave the secured area and go through security again then I would look into having the ticketing agency change your flights so you end up with a longer connection time of at least 3 hours.
Hi ben, Thank you for this video, i was hoping i could ask you for some advice? I have booked a flight from mcr to uae via pegasus airlines with a layover of 1 hour and 50 mins at Istanbul. It is a self transfer flight but i have booked both flights with the same airline, so will i have to claim my luaggage, check in again at the desk and then go to my boarding gate? I keep hearing that istanbul airport is huge and there's not enough time to make the next flight, should i ensure k
Usually a self-transfer means that both flights were booked separately in which case you would have to collect your bags in Istanbul and recheck them. An hour and 50 minute flight is going to be tight if you have to do that. The airport is huge and it can take a 15 to 20 min walk just to get to immigration and international transfer lines. I would check with Pegasus and see if you can get a full service ticket so you that your bag will transfer all the way to UAE. If you do that then all you will need to do is go through a security check once in Istanbul and then on to your boarding gate.
I do have some questions I am planning to travel from Manchester to Davao airport in July. For the returning flight, it says from Davao to Mactan-Cebu Airport within the Philippines, with a layover of 50mins for the next flight to Singapore, then from there to Manchester. I am wondering if I need to collect/recheck the bag in Cebu Airport upon arriving from Davao airport, and if the 50mins layover is too short? I can't exactly find alternative routes as they all have a stop at Cebu airport, with that 50mins layover. If on the chance I miss that connecting flight due to airline delays, am I able to get on the next available flight?
You won’t need to recheck your bag in Cebu as it’s in the same country as Davao but you probably will in Singapore. A 50 minute layover is a little tight but as long as the flight is on time you should have no problem making the next flight. If you do happen to miss your flight, the airline will rebook you on the next available flight.
Hello I have a question. We booked a flight to Manila from Atlanta and it has connecting flight to LAX. We'll be flying American Airlines from ATL to LAX and Philippine Airlines from LAX-MNL. We booked it same ticket though different airlines. So do I have to claim my check luggage when we get to LAX and re check it again or AA will transfer it for us?
American has a codeshare with Philippine Airlines so as long as you booked your flights all through American or Philippine Airlines then your bags will get transferred over to the next flight for you. If you booked through a third party then it's possible that both flights were booked separately in which case you would have to recheck your bags in LAX.

Dear Ben, This was a great explanation, i wish i have watched it prior to my trip. I traveled to Denver (from london) with connecting flight in Dallas (same ticket, two partner airlines- London- Dallas BA, Dallas- Denver AA). However my flight to Dallas got delayed, my luggage was checked in to Denver and I did not collect my luggage in Dallas. 4 days after i arrived in Denver my luggage is still missing. I assume i should have collected it in Dallas and re-checked it to Denver. What is your guess- was it sent to lost and found on Dallas airport or it was sent to AA facility to get it delivered to me in Denver? I am flying back to london in 24 hours (this time via Chicago), Do I need to reschedule and go via Dallas to collect it from the lost and found? Airlines and lost and found at Dallas are not providing any information, i claimed on the ground in Denver, sent an email to lost and found in Dallas, called BA.... Thank you very much for your kind support.
Hi, anytime you enter the US you will always have to collect your luggage and recheck it. Your luggage is most likely still in Dallas. If you can reschedule your flight to connect in Dallas you will probably be able to find your luggage at American’s baggage claim office. Just make sure you give yourself a longer connection time as you will need to leave the secured area to go and find your bag and will then have to go and check your luggage if needed and through security. I hope you are able to find it.

Yes, you will have to collect your luggage in LAX before going through customs and immigration and then recheck your luggage for the next flight.

1. Jakarta (CGK) - Tokyo (NRT) by Japan Airlines
- Tokyo (NRT) - Los Angeles (LAX) by Japan Airlines
- Los Angeles (LAX) - Toronto (YYZ) by West Jet
2. Jakarta(CGK) - Tokyo(NRT) by Japan Airlines
Tokyo(NRT) - Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) by American Airlines
Dallas-Fort Worth(DFW) - Toronto(YYZ) by American Airlines
*I found both option in Japan Airlines' website, so I suppose that they have partnerships (?)
Which one do you think is better?

Thanks for the info! Do you know if this is departing out of certain countries or does it matter?

I'm flying Amsterdam --Lufthansa--> Frankfurt (2h15m) --Gulf Air--> Bahrain (7h45m) --Gulf Air--> Bangalore
Will I have to recheck in Frankfurt?
You will have to recheck in Frankfurt as Lufthansa and Gulf Air are not partner airlines
Hello Ben , Thanks for such an informative video . I have a connecting flight from Winnipeg to Ottawa and then Ottawa to Montreal and Montreal to India . I booked my flights from one site altogether. Do I need to go through customs in Ottawa and Montreal ?
You will not need to go through customs in Ottawa and Montreal since there are all within Canada.
I have a ticket on united all booked on one ticked coming from asia to sfo and then connecting to Canada all on united. My assumption is that I will have to recheck my bag in sfo and then take my flight to canada ?
Correct, you will have to recheck your bag in SFO alone with going through immigration and customs.

A 2 hour connecting flight in DC should be plenty of time to recheck bags and go through immigration and customs. Safe travels!
Hi! Do you happen to know if I would need an australian transit visa for a 3 hour layover?
Yes, you will need a transit visa.
@@BenDreamVacations many thanks. I will look into short checking the luggage.
How did you book your flights? Was it through Alaska airline's website.
@@BenDreamVacations it was from a third party website
I booked them all together on vietnam airlines site. I have a lay over of 2 hours.

Your bags should be transferred over to the next airline for you.
@@BenDreamVacations Even when Dublin has a US customs so we wouldn’t have to go though again…
I want to know if we are in connecting flights then we have to pay separately for both airlines or not???
Only if you are paying for each flight separately. If you book your connecting flights on one ticket then you will only pay one price.
You will need a transit visa if you are traveling from visa required country and you are stopping in Canada on your way to another country.
For rechecking baggage during transit, do you need to have a visa for the specific country?
It depends on the country. In most cases you can recheck baggage without a visa.
I have 2 questions:

What’s your connecting city and where are you traveling to and from?
@@BenDreamVacations Hong Kong HKG to Los Angeles LAX
@@novemberhtoo6381 your connecting city is LAX? If so you will definitely have to collect your bags and go through customs before catching your next flight. An hour and a half I think is a little tight but it’s doable.
Oooo! Thanks for the notice! That sound rough. Thank you!
Different terminal*
You will not need a visa for Kuala Lumpur even if you have to change terminals.
I have booked my ticket from China to Kigali. With 2.45 hours layover in Dubai. I have one question
All the flights are under one ticket and on the website It says baggage not checked through in Dubai. Meaning I have to collect my bags in Dubai International Airport Terminal 1, and recheck them in Dubai Dubai International Airport Terminal 2 for my connecting flight to Kigali. Do I need a transit visa for this?
What citizenship do you hold? In most cases you will need a 48 transit visa which can only be provided by the airline you are flying on.
So helpful🙏thank you
I hope you see this in time but tomorrow i am flying from ATL to EWR to London. My layover from EWR to London is 1 hour. Is this a situation to where I have to recheck my bag? I’m flying United and they didn’t give me a choice but to have to check my bag and I’m terrified I’m going to miss my connecting flight.
@@BenDreamVacations thank you so much!
I want to fly to JFK from the UK, and get a connecting flight to Rochester NY. I assume, as JFK is the first port of arrival in the US, I would have to collect my baggage and recheck, even if I fly with partner arilines and have everything on the same ticket?
Yes, you will need to collect your luggage and recheck once in JFK.

Hi Ben such a very helpful information. I have a question i am planning to book a flight from Manila back to Stockholm until now i can´t decide which flight. I really need your advice.

I actually wanna know if ill face any issues during this flight:
I have visa type D from germany study visa 16B abs 1, ill depart from amman airport (jordan) then transit in italy milan bergamo the ticket says i have to recheck baggage and self transfer, lay over is one hour and 50 mins. Is it possible that i face any problems in jordan or italy?
You shouldn't have any problems leaving Amman airport since I am assuming that is where you are from?
For Italy, you won't need any type of visa as long as you stay in the transit area.
Hi Ben, I am Traveling from Chengdu China to Dubai (Sichuan Airline) where I have a 3-hour layover for my connecting flight to Tanznaia (Dar es Salaam) [Ethiopian Airline]
And it has been noted that I will need to collect my baggage and check in again at Dubai.
Hi ben i hope you see this, i bought an airline ticket from Chicago to bali Indonesia. I have stops in Abu Dhabi, New Delhi, Malaysia, then final destination. My airlines are Etihad, till i get to india then i switch to air asia x then air asia Indonesia now my layovers arent over 4 hours my question is do i need a transit visa because in my email it said i will have to recheck my bags at each stop
The only visa you will need to get is for New Delhi, you will need an E-visa since you will you to leave the transit area to be able to recheck your bags.

You can usually crop photos just using your phone.
Sir is it safe to carry cash on flights is there any restrictions on tsa and how can we carry cash
You can carry up to $10,000 US without restriction. Anything more than that amount will need to be declared to TSA or Customs.

@@BenDreamVacations if I do online check-in.will it save time for me?
@@dilkhushsaini6935 it will save a little bit of time but you will still need to physically check your bag in with the airline. You could check with KLM and see if you are able to check your bag at the gate instead of at the main check-in desk. This would allow you to stay in the secured area and not have to go through security again. It would save a lot of time.
@@BenDreamVacations okay.I'll ask KLM desk at Delhi Airport so i can get an idea how I should go in Amsterdam Airport.

What's does self transfer mean I'm flying from Manchester to kisumu
But I'm going from Manchester to Cairo then from Cairo to Nairobi then Nairobi to kisumu as my final destination
I have two questions
1) on the website It says baggage not checked through.
@@BenDreamVacationsthe airline is Turkish airline but first flight till Istanbul is operated by indigo. So now u know whether I need a visa or not?

Hi Ben,
I am going to have a multi leg flight from Nice to Jakarta return.
Thank you.
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
Hi ben, Thank you for this video, i was hoping i could ask you for some advice? I have booked a flight from mcr to uae via pegasus airlines with a layover of 1 hour and 50 mins at Istanbul. It is a self transfer flight but i have booked both flights with the same airline, so will i have to claim my luaggage, check in again at the desk and then go to my boarding gate? I keep hearing that istanbul airport is huge and there's not enough time to make the next flight, should i ensure k
Ensure that travel insurance is booked or would my bags be automatically put on my onto my flight to dubai
I do have some questions
I am planning to travel from Manchester to Davao airport in July.
@BenDreamVacations We booked it through 3rd party and 3rd day after booking we recieved an email from American Airlines confirming our flight to Manila.
@@elsakissell5066 Then your bags should be automatically be transferred to the next flight for you but just double check with American when you go to check your bags.

Cause it says on my itinerary ( the Louisville- Detroit-San Francisco) is operated by delta but from San Francisco-Philippines it is operated by Philippine Airlines. Im just confuse if they are partnership airlines. Thanks for your help🙏🙏🎉
It will depend how the 3rd party travel agency booked the flights. Delta and Philippines Airlines have a code share so as long as the flights were booked on the same reservation and not as two separate flights your bags will be checked through to the Philippines.
