    As someone who grew up in a house with carpeted stairs, I have to vouch for their amazingness (as a kid anyway). I spent countless hours hanging out on those stairs, reading, playing, cleaning, ofc. But they were sincerely my fav hangout spot in the whole house, hard stairs would have not provided me with these glorious memories 🙏

      My aunt had carpet all over her BATHROOM. When I was a kid I thought it was the best thing ever (imagine the sweet sensation, getting out of the bathtub, running your naked toes on the carpet), but when I grew up, my adult mind wondered how much mold there was underneath 😂 I would never put carpet on any floor in my house, especially with a dog and kids, but I kinda miss that trend at the same time 🥲

    Having a dog is still hard. You might not birth it, but when their puppies they still have to be trained. They wake up at night, you have to let them out. But if you don't have a yard, you have to take them out for walks. They chew things, when their teeth are growing. They get sick, they have to get their shots. They have to be socialized. They get their period. They can't be alone for long, some are scared for fireworks. Some are anxious. It's hard in it's own way.

    • @arianahagakore8180
      @arianahagakore8180 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. Some differences to consider might be: do you put your own physical needs aside to meet your dogs needs? Does your attention to tasks get divided constantly to respond to your dogs behavior/ safety? Do you hold your dog when trying to use the toilet or cook food single handedly? Do you hold your dog for them to fall asleep multiple times a day & night? Does your dog have multiple meltdowns (sometimes publicly) you have to find compromises with them for while keeping yourself calm? Does your dogs behavior over the course of decades trigger parts of yourself that need healing? Can you leave your dog home alone while you go out? Does your dog know how to feed itself without needing to be watched for choking & cleaned every time? Do you have to talk to your dog as they talk to you constantly? Do you have to keep your dog educated legally? Dogs (& other animals in captivity) are definitely their own level of hard work (I've had 5 dogs from puppyhood) but the demands to your personal freedom (not to mention recovering from childbirth & navigating keeping another being alive from the food your body makes) comparatively when raising young humans are unparalleled.

    Im so sorry the doctor treated you that way, Colleen. Im a nurse, and I can say that the ones that are rude to patients are often rude to the nurses as well. There are so many wonderful doctors out there, but there are some that have a terrible bedside manner and can be very arrogant. It's happened to me as a patient as well, even recently. Im chronically ill and I had a doctor tell me I need to stop relying on other people to make me better after spending 10 min. In the room with me and had never seen me before. Im actually very ill, and my healthcare is important to my well-being.

But I do want to add that I have a dog with anxiety and some quirks that leads to nights without sleep. Sitting next to my dog because she won’t eat otherwise. She barks when she just wants eye contact. Of COURSE so not the same. And would never compare. But I do want the dog struggles to be acknowledged lol

    Carpet is just as slippery with socks on as any other surface. Grippy socks will make them not slip on hardwood. Also, baby gates should be put up at the top and bottom of stairs so the babies can’t go up or down them if they get out of your view. You can buy the kind that have doors so you don’t have to step over them. I also think carpeted stairs are much slipperier than hardwood stairs. I slip up and down carpeted stair all the time.

    i love you colleen but i don’t think it’s fair to assume every pet owners life is as easy as you and erik described. some animals are disabled and require an insane amount of care. i am not a mother and i will never know the hardships that go into the birthing process or raising a family until i get to that point, and i’m not saying the two are comparable, but to ignore the fact some animals are disabled and to assume pet parents don’t have hardships isn’t fair.
    my dog recently went paralyzed and needed a $8,000 surgery and the past few months have been extremely hard. my dog cannot pee or poop without me having the literally squeeze it out of her. i changed her diapers and had to bathe her everytime she had an accident. my dog wouldn’t eat unless i hand fed her or drink unless i bring the water bowl to her. she was on crate rest crying all day and night for months. my dog is learning how to walk all over again and i celebrated little victories like her standing on her own for the first time, but it’s a long journey we will be on for the rest of her life. i’m fortunate enough that she’s a small dog and i can help her with ease, but some animals that become disabled are large and it’s very physically demanding for the owner. since the day she stopped walking i have had extreme anxiety, constantly checking the cameras i had pointed to her crate, worrying if she will ever walk or be independent again. i’ve had scares where i left work to check on her and my coworkers made rude comments and didn’t take me seriously when i know they would leave to do the same for their human children.
    some people don’t care about animals enough to make these sacrifices or think pet owners are crazy for trying to continue to give their pet a quality life, but we don’t care and would rather continue life with our pet than see them suffer or give up on them. again, motherhood and being a pet parent are not comparable, but ignoring the hardships some pet owners go through is unfair in the argument you made and i am just trying to educate you and whoever reads this to give some perspective.
    again, i love you colleen and i do not mean this is a rude way, i just want to give some perspective since the hardships of disabled pet owners aren’t seen or acknowledged enough.

I am now 28 years old and in my house with my husband we have wooden stairs with no carpet. On Christmas Eve I was wearing socks and walking down the stairs and I slipped and fell down so many stairs. I hit my back on the edge of one of the stairs and broke my toe as well. When I grabbed for the railing to stop my fall it came out of the wall and snapped in half. TRUE STORY!!! I vote keep the carpet 🤍

    I completely agree with you about people comparing raising dogs to raising children. Both are hard, and both are part of your family, but babies are incomparable to puppies. The serious life changes that come with a baby versus a dog are not comparable in my opinion. The only reason I don't mind the term fur-baby is if someone uses it as an endearing nickname to refer to the fact that they are part of your family, not to how difficult it is to raise them. I have never had a baby and I know it is unfair to compare them lmao, babies change your life completely.

    I had hardwood stairs - and even with baby gates - both my children slipped on the hardwood and fell down the stairs. I ended up moving because I was so scared my kids would get hurt worse then they did. HIGHLY RECOMMEND keeping the carpet. Its MUCH safer because even if you fall its padded. I fell down those wood stairs SOOOO Many times - there was no way to stop- especially with socks on. I was so lucky I never broke anything. It was like a rocket ship of stairs and it was terrifying.

    A memory I have from being a young teen for new years is the skating rink. I can remember when I was 13 going on 14 and the skating rink had a millennium bash back when it was turning the year 2000. It was so neat and I felt so cool to be able to stay out until midnight at the skating rink. Man, I'm getting old 🤣 ETA; raise your hand if Erik's diss of all the cool things you can find in Marshall's, Home Goods, Ross, TJMaxx made you wanna blow a gasket 🙋🏼‍♀️Guess he's too good for a bargain. I saw Colleen cut her eyes to the camera and I know that was offending her as it did me! Nothing wrong with those stores at all. Hes just more boujee.

    Colleen's relax literally speaks to me! I get so annoyed when people say they are "parents" when they have pets. Like, you don't get to celebrate mother and father's day, because you went to shelter and adopted an animal. Good for you for doing that, but it isn't the same as pushing a child out of your hoohaa.

    Carpeted stairs not only are safer but they make the house feel cozier and look way more clean to me than hardwood. With hardwood you can see every hair or crumb on them lol. Team carpet for sure
