Omg Melanie, thanks so much! Reading a linkedin post today for a openwork person, I realized that I have the same situation!! This is why no one sent request. God bless you and the person that refer us to your video. Truly valuable. So many people with this situation that desesperately need a job!
You are so welcome!
HI, Melanie! I too watched this video due to your recent LinkedIn comment / post. I made adjustments last night to my profile. *So* frustrated at playing wack-a-mole in this job search but, still looking forward to finally clinching that new role. Fingers crossed and thanks so much for your continued advocacy. Cheers.
It is ridiculously hard to be a job seeker nowadays. I did go out and take a look at your profile. The job title you have chosen is not one that is normally together and so while you will come up in Boolean Searches you may consider changing to a title more like Director of Product Marketing or Director of Communications which is more generic. If you come to our Q&A session on this Friday and raise this question I will show you what I mean as to how this works in LinkedIn live.
Great information! Thank you for posting this on Courtney Mara's post. ❤

This video is definitely a game changer thank you Melanie! So to confirm it's best to remove the "open to work" banner?? Furthermore what if you're open to other roles, what would be some help suggestions or getting attraction? For example I was laid off months ago while in a customer success role but now open to pivoting to more project management roles such as (technical pm, implementation pm etc) but also still open to certain CS roles. Thanks for any helpful feedback!
No, do not remove the open to work banner. You need to keep that on as well. For your other questions, please consider joining our live event and I can answer the pivoting question more in depth. Or, there is a video on our channel that talks more in depth about pivoting if you would prefer.
Thank you ! Where can I find details on the live event?
Wow, I'm going to do this right now! Thank you.
Glad it is helpful. We will be having a live q and a session on TH-cam next week. Please consider joining if you have any other questions. I will also be discussing some other nuances in this area.

Thank you as this is a game changer!!!

So, do we need to lie? I say that tongue in cheek. As always, I appreciate you, Melanie showing us the behind-the-scenes of LinkedIn.
I know you are probably only kidding....but just so everyone is clear. NEVER lie on your resume or profile. That is the whole reason we put the company as currently seeking. That way it is clear you are looking for that role, not that you are presently in it. It is unfortunately that LinkedIn code just doesn't revert to the previous job title of everyone which would solve this issue.
Big THANKS ! ❤
You're Welcome!
Hi Melanie. Thank you for this tip. It is a game changer. If you are looking for two different roles would you repeat the "currently searching..." function twice, once for each title? If so would that affect the search results on the recruiter side? I am an art director and a senior designer and I am open to roles for both positions and don't want to limit my reach. Thank you!
Please consider joining our live event today at 10 CT on our TH-cam channel. I will answer any questions you may have and show all job seekers how to stop falling out of the searches as well as some other ways to land a job quicker.
Thank you, this is helpful. Do you have a suggestion on how to handle if you're targeting a few different job titles? For example I'd be open to a Director, Sr. Director, or VP title.
Hello Melanie, Thank you so much for sharing. I will make the update to my LinkedIn today. Can you advise is it better to have the open for work on your profile or just flagging recruiters? Thanks again for the helpful advice.
Turn on the open to work. That way you come up in that search filter.
I don't know if recruiters are just naturally ignoring me or what, I've had my current job title like this since you and another recommended it and I'm still getting like no views. I'm guessing it's because they're saturated with resumes and ATS applications and don't even have time, but I'll go weeks without views even with active interviews.
Can you reply here with a link to your LinkedIn profile so I can take a look to see what might be stopping you from getting found?
Thank you for this great information ! I just made the changes!
@@melaniewoods-cglrecruiting1410 I tried to reply with the link, but it isn't showing up for some reason. The LinkedIn is the typical url with /kikorex at the end.
Eye opener
Hope it was helpful!
First, thank you for that information. It was invaluable. I'm in a different situation. I'm currently seeking employment but I have a job. I am also trying to move from my present role as an Account Manager to a Customer Success Manager role. What can I do to optimize my LinkedIn profile for my recruiter? Is there a way to do that without advertising to LinkedIn in general that I am looking elsewhere?
If you currently have a job and don't want anyone to know that you are seeing, turn on your open to work but make sure you choose the option that has open only to recruiters so your current employer can't see it. Also, consider adjusting your headline to align with Customer Success. Make sure you also have lots of keywords on your profile that relate to customer success.
Hello Melanie, hope you are doing well. Great video, thank you for the insights. I recently moved from US to Canada and I'm finding it difficult to get a job here and most of the people don't respond to my connection requests, when they do, they tell me that they don't have any openings in US even though my profile location says I have moved to Canada. Is there a way to fix this? Greatly appreciate any inputs. Thank you!
Sometimes people jump to conclusions about your location because of the past locations on your profile. You might try removing the locations under the experience section of your past positions. It is not a required field.
Thanks for going through this Melanie. I had done most of this prior to your advice. But I added some additional material. Still not getting any calls.
We just scheduled a live event on our TH-cam channel that you are welcome to join us at if you have any questions about your job search.
Great information- thank you. I've made the changes suggested and the only problem is that by listing the year and no month, LinkedIn shows me as "currently seeking opportunities" for 8 months, presumably since August is the 8th month of 2024. Is there a way to eliminate # of months so it doesn't look like such a long time and I appear more marketable, even though it's not too far off?
I definitely search current or past every time. If you don't you are limiting your options.
@heathertuberville7206 - do you start with current and past or do you start with just current? We polled a bunch of recruiters and they all told us the same thing....they start with current. Otherwise they waste their time looking at candidates who have transitioned to other careers, have moved into higher level roles or even ones that are now retired.
Thanks, just made the update.
Wonderful! We just scheduled a live event on our TH-cam channel that you are welcome to join us at if you have any questions about your job search!
Thank you for the informative video. I have a question about how this would work if you have a job currently. For example, my current title is software engineer and I'm more frontend focused and looking for a frontend role. Should I change my current job title to what I'm looking for or add a new role that says currently seeking frontend role?
This is a great question! If you have a current job job with a current job title then you shouldn't do this. You don't want to state that you currently are in this role, just that you are looking for it. Your best bet is instead to use one of the slots that the Open To Work area provides you for the title you are targeting.
@@melaniewoods-cglrecruiting1410, thank you for the insight. So on my profile I have the little "open to work" box below my headline, name, etc.and it has those titles but my guess is that it doesn't translate to the method you're referencing in your video as my current or past titles don't have "frontend engineer" or "frontend developer" in it. Would it make sense for me to create a job section for experience in the way you share in this video with me "currently looking for a frontend role."
Interesting, but how do i fix it if i want to come up with more job titles?? Should i enter similarly more but then the profile will look very weird having more entries all of them seek new job?
How can this work for currently employed people wanting to move into a new arena?
This will not work in that scenario because you will already have a current job title. If you are looking the best place for you to do this is in the open to work area. We will be having a live session next week on our TH-cam channel. I can cover this point more in depth if you are able to attend.
Thank you for sharing Melanie! If I am targeting 2 types of roles (Project Manager and Product Manager), what do I do?
Should I create 2 "current" jobs to separate the titles and with different descriptions?
This can be challenging. If you want to schedule a one on one with me we can test this for your profile specifically. Go to our website www.cglrecruiting.com under job seeker resources and it will give you more information about how to do this. I did a look to see what job titles are tied to Project Manager in LinkedIn and there is one: "Senior Product Project Manager" that might be a good choice.
Do Freelance roles still work for this filter? I have a freelance role that I keep on at all times for when I pick up small contracts or jobs, and that stays on when I am unemployed. It doesn't require a company name though, which is what makes me question it's validity for searching in recruiter. Do you know if this works, or if I should update my profile as listed in the video?
@morthemex - even for a freelance role it still should require a company. Are you entering it under the job experience section and then just putting freelance for the company? If you are, then it will still work for the job title filter. Just make sure you are putting the exact job title you want. For example some thing like "Mechanical Engineer" not "Freelance Mechanical Engineer".
@@melaniewoods-cglrecruiting1410 weird, doesn’t require a company for me. I do have everything else in order though!
I can submit without a company, and the asterisk that denotes a required field drops off when freelance is selected 💁♀️
Any tips for how one can do something similar when still working (therefore cannot be public about their job search)?
The only thing you can really do is to turn on your #opentowork without the green banner on and try to list out your target titles on there.
What if you're have 2 jobs as current? I have a consulting job title, HR Consultant that is a current contract role. I seeking a Dir of TA role, I Director of TA title and Currently seeking as a job with a 2024 start date. The HR Consulting job I'm still doing so it shows as to present. Will I show up in Dir of TA searches with this set up? Thanks!
This is a great question! I have tested this and when you have 2 current roles there appears to be a problem with LinkedIn Recruiter that it doesn't work. We will be having a live q and a session next week on our TH-cam channel. I will see if I can test this live for everyone to show you exactly how this happens and what to do .
Thank you Melanie! I will plan to attend!
My desired title doesn't pup up in the list of suggested titles. I know you spoke to it at the end as a nuance, but I couldn't follow what you were suggesting. Are you saying I should choose one of the proposed titles or use my own?
What is the desired title you are looking for?
@@melaniewoods-cglrecruiting1410
"Senior Director, Brand Marketing" as this was my most recent title, but there are other variations and levels that I am considering, such as VP of Brand; Senior Director, Brand Management; Head of Brand Strategy, Head of Brand & Creative, etc. So I am not sure if I would show up in the search if I use my most recent title.
I’m scared to do this, because won’t the company think of me as dishonest because I’m lying about my current position. Also won’t they find out when they call to verify?
No, they won't because when they see it in LinkedIn Regular or LinkedIn Recruiter it shows very clearly that you are currently seeking this new opportunity. You can even put more details about your job search in the description box. I would also like you to think about this....would you rather come up in the search and have the opportunity to talk to someone about it or just have the system hide you from them ever seeing you?
Melanie thank you, you're a genius🫶🏿
Thank you for your kind words! Please share this video with other job seekers to help them with their job search too. #weareallinthistogether
