@@thh1226 you do have some points, but I don't think that's entirely the case. To put it simply, people here don't actually mind that much in socializing before Covid, but now that there's a risk within communication, a lot were put in stress and there's no reliable source of information to base on. And as it goes, troubles began with fake news, something that never has been that hot in Vietnam since 2019. And correct me if you will, but Vietnam has always been an open country to the world, yet lacks self-awareness in most time.

I've seen a lot of fake news since 2010 and there's some that are just stupid but people agree with them and follow them. It's because the people have self awareness issues (like you just said), they also very very superstitious and will believe anything if a lot of people also believe it and that created a chain reaction.

First time my dad and I tried a Vietnamese restaurant in his Houston neighborhood he spoke to the waiter in Vietnamese as he’s a fluent speaker. He got the usual compliment on his fluency and they exchanged pleasantries. As the waiter headed to the kitchen he passed an older man at the cash register telling him in Cantonese to watch what he says as the old white guy can speak Vietnamese. Dad also speaks Cantonese.
I have been living in Vietnam for 7 years now... my wife who’s Vietnamese and I always get called things behind our backs. 'Are you embarrassed yet' 😆 Best comment ever Chris. At work, we had a German tourist make fun of us (We worked at Kodak) to her friend, we let her ramble on for a while at how stupid we looked. My co-worker and I both looked at her, she laughed at us again, then we replied to her in German, each adding our bit, to which she looked absolutely mortified. I guess we got the last laugh that day. I would love to be able to learn Vietnamese but it seems quite difficult. I had an English person tell me that I shouldn't be speaking a foreign language in the UK because 'we speak English in Britain'. He said I should go back to where I come from if I want to speak foreign. My reply was 'I am where I come from' and few choice words. I was speaking Welsh....in Wales.
I'm from London and have witnessed this attitude unfortunately many times there is a superiority complex with some of the community here, and many will never know the splendour of embracing another culture by talking in a another tongue, they feel English is superior and more useful globally ..therefor will not learn ..... such a shame.

Happened to me and my mother. We are Brazilians, live in Brazil. Brazil has a huge Japanese immigration, and after five or six generations, they are completely integrated to our society (just like... well, everyone else, actually, we are a very mixed country and very proud of it). So, my mom and I were in Liberdade, a place mostly occupied by Japanese, in São Paulo. We were eating in a very crowded restaurant, when those two very old Japanese ladies couldn't find a place to sit and eat. So, we naturally offered the other two chairs in our table. This is a very common cortesy here, we do that all the time, is special to old people and pregnant women. So, they sat down and immediately started to talk in nihongo (Japanese language) to each other, without any idea I could understand every single word. They looked at my mother, a big smiling and sweet woman (even if she didn't understand a single word they were saying, it's in our culture to always try to be gentle and smile to everyone, in special foreigners) with tanned indigenous skin and yellowish eyes... and started to loudly whisper to each other, laughing and even pointing, referring to her as "saru". Saru, for those who don't know it, means "monkey". And when they noticed I was looking, my smile disappearing, they laughed even more, loving the fact they were probably confusing me as well. I let them talk for a while, but even being proud of my patience, this situation reached my limit very soon. So, I stated 'to my mom', in high and clear Brazilian Portuguese for the entire restaurant to hear, how it was funny how we opened our doors to receive everyone from everywhere, but some still refused to learn basic respect... If you enter someone's home, the least you should do is to respect the owner, right? But no, apparently, even 'monkeys' show more respect and kindness than some old and very disrespectful people... The two imediately stopped talking, looked at me in horror, hurried to get everything and run. I just smiled at them, as my mom, sweet as she is, could just stare, very confused at the entire situation, without a single idea about what they were just talking about her. The staff, all nihongo speakers as well, and just as annoyed by their little act, applauded. I was even gifted a croissant by the owner. Apparently, it wasn't the first time these two ladies were disrespectful to the Brazilians on that same restaurant, but the staff couldn't confront them and most of the targets couldn't understand their language. So, when I did both, everyone there liked it very much. Always be respectful, people... It doesn't cost anything, and you prevent to be caught acting like an idiot, like these from the video and all the situations on the comments. Thank you, you're welcome.

This happend to me once in Singapore, I may not look like it (people tells me I look like I'm from India) But I am Filipino, so when I was in singapore with my Family, this old Filipina said something about how I look in my native language and when I replied "atleast I'm not as dumb as you" in my native language. She just sat there quitely until the train arrived to the next station. Honestly, it was the best feeling ever, looking at her embarrased face.
In a Church’s Chicken, the Filipina staff said something along the lines of “Why don’t they like spicy?” when my dad ordered fried chicken and specified that it should not be spicy. My dad, who was married to a Filipina, replied “Not everyone likes spicy” in tagalog. Basically. that branch had a problem with contaminating fryer oil/not separating the fryer vats used for spicy chicken and not spicy chicken. Because I’m a damn pansy when it comes to spice, I prefer my stuff very plain.

I think it's important not to generalise everyone due to some incidents. What I notice is many people take some incidents of asians and generalise every asians as being racist. Nobody noticing him forgetting English lmao. Knowing multiple languages is hard because you'll forget them as soon as you stop practicing, even with your native language as you can tell with him forgetting the word pickle lol. Natural talent to hold in many languages
That did make me laugh a bit haha, and also very curious. I would've thought to know a different language's meaning it would inherently be linked to the native language version, you know? Like, idk how to explain that, but surely the word pickle in English and the Vietnamese translation of that are always mentally linked together in order to understand Vietnamese in the first place? Or is it more like.. the foreign language you learn gets associated with mental images instead of words, so you see what it is but don't immediately know the word in english? 🤔 Just hard to comprehend how people's brains work lol. Especially since I can only speak one language properly

@@dazzeld9704 ohh, I see..!! Well that makes sense, I guess it's easy to fall out of practice even with your native language when you're not really using it..! How interesting ^^
@@mimthyss Very interesting question/comment. The answer is, no, they are not linked at all, at least in my brain, which is why it's so difficult to translate back and forth sometimes, even for something as simple as the world "pickle" It's because all my experiences with a "pickle" in English and a pickle in a language such as Vietnamese are different. "Pickle" in English might make me imagine sour or sweet little round cucumber strips that you put on a sandwich. While the world "pickle" in Vietnamese would make me imagine radish potentially, or pickled mustard greens, which I would eat as a side dish. I have different emotions, thoughts, and experiences when I say the two words. For me they are completely different, even though translation-wise, they would be equatable. Even for a word as simple as dog, "dog" in English makes me think of big dogs liek golden retrievers, while in Vietnam I think of smaller dogs as they don't really raise big dogs much there. Hope that makes sense.
@@chrismixlewis ohh, wow, thanks for the reply! That's so interesting, but makes sense since language doesn't just exist in a void haha. so as somebody actually living immersed in their culture it makes sense you'd therefore make connections to your experiences there, that's so cool. ^^

I have a similar story. My grandfathers cousin was in Japan. He's, if I remember correctly, a translator for many languages at the EU headquarters in Brussels, so he knows like veeery many languages. So he was in some kind of train (I don't really know details since I've only heard this from other people, told in a not that detailed way) and there were these Japenese girls who thought my grandfathers cousin looked strange, they had probably not seen many finnish people in their lives so that's understandable. Then they started to talk to eachother in japanese like "owh that guy has some weird clothes" and stuff like that, assuming that he wouldn't understand anything. Well, he didn't straight up say to them that he understands every single word they are saying, but when it was his stop and he was about to leave the train he said to the girls "you have very strange clothes on you, happy rest of your day" in perfect japanese and left the train. Of course, no one knows what the girls reactions were but I'm assuming they were very suprised. After that it's always been a funny story to tell among our relatives.
Lol as if they didn't have similar clothes in Japan. Thing is Japanese people don't like foreighners at all, the clothes probably weren't much of importance for them to start the trash talk. If he was long enough there he would probably hear their real motive.

Right when I finalized the booking I started speaking Portuguese telling them all the rules and penalties if they didn't comply or they could simply leave. They ended up booking 3 rooms and it was a good day

But majority (include me) welcome you into the country and we appreciate that you put the time and dedication into learning language and cultures. I think it's important not to generalise everyone due to some incidents. What I notice is many people take some incidents of asians and generalise every asians as being racist.

I think you should go back to the restaurant and say something, A) they'll never expect it and B) they will get the shock of their lives!! You can do it!!
@@imchezi nah, don’t do this. Racists aren’t worth your time.
The skeleton of yoda? I’m confused lol
Thank you all for your kind replies! I definitely wasn’t the only one they’ve done this to, judging by their Yelp reviews. I was in a lot of pain that day and being on the autism spectrum, my brain was already on overload. I would have lost control of myself emotionally had I approached them that day, and would have left feeling defeated and exhausted. Those douche canoes weren’t worth that. There are so many hurtful remarks and stares I get every time I’m out, this time I just had my guard down. God bless you guys, stay well and joyful 🤗💚🍂🎃

Hey Chris, love your content and knowledge of various Asian languages especially Vietnamese. I would love to see more “uneducated’ footage. I think it’s important to bring to light because it happens more than people think.
The funniest language mix up I have observed was an Asian guy sat on a train from Hannover to Stuttgart. A German guy sat next him and proceeded to talk english (loudly) for the whole trip to the Asian guy. It was so loud that other passengers were opening luggage to get headphones and several actually moved to another carriage. Not once did he ask if the Asian guy spoke German until near the end of the journey. The Asian guy spoke perfect German and when the rest of the carriage heard this exchange we all fell about laughing. It was quiet after that.
That's just racist
Nah its funny because the german dude trying to be polite and didnt know he could speak german xD and then once the boom is drop boom everyone laugh had the german knew the asian guy can speak german they would have converse in german instead. Rather than racist i find it quite sweet xD

Thank you for sharing this. My husband from the US has put up with a lot of racism in Vietnam during this pandemic. Some people need to stop saying shit like this.
You handled that perfectly, totally outclassed her and simultaneously diffused the situation
“Aren’t you embarrassed yet?” Is now something I would use when on the same situation.
Your channel reminds me of being in Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore. I miss it.
We have a Japanese restaurant here. I tried to speak Japanese to our waiter last time, and he came out with Indonesian. So, I switched to Bahasa Indonesia. 🤣 My husband just laughed when he got so excited. The chef came out to laugh at me and talk in Japanese about distracting his new waiter. I had to keep reminding the waiter of other tables, because he kept coming over to talk with us.

They're right to feel a certain way about foreigners in their land, just as Finns would be justified.

Top notch calling her out. That ignorance needs to be checked.
I was in a department store in Germany. I saw an elderly woman who was having trouble reading the price tags. I noticed immediately that she was a Turkish woman like me. I asked her to help. At the same moment a saleswoman came up to us and said, "No touch clothes. Must have buy." I replied, "Would you please speak to me in German. I am a foreigner, I don't understand you." I have never forgotten that stupid look in her face.
I bet her mind suddenly said ‘oh fuck, they understand’ as soon as you spoke to her. Really made me chuckle :))
The reaction when you told the Karen you speak her language and asked "are you embarrassed?" after she called you two covid was super satisfying. Lol

I’m French and I lived most of my life in an English-speaking country, once I moved to France and went to a French school a lot of people mocked me for openly speaking English (giving me looks, imitating me etc). It’s really upsetting.
Yeah I think that has to do with the historic tense French-English rivalry...it sucks
Well, historically, France and England haven’t had the best relationship 😅

Lol I love that you set her straight. Im from New Zealand and was an exchange student in Brazil for a year and of course learnt the language fluently. Many years later I worked at the Novotel in my home town and like most hotels we have strict rules and fees for the amount of pax/persons that we can accommodate into a room being the max of 4 per room, about 3 in the morning in come a group of 9 party goers trying to discuss among themselves in Portuguese how they can save money so they were coming up with the idea to all bunk in one room and one said " just tell her(me) only 4 of us are staying and that we are only dropping you off but she doesn't have to know that we intend to stay etc" then I kindly proceed with making them a booking. Right when I finalized the booking I started speaking Portuguese telling them all the rules and penalties if they didn't comply or they could simply leave. They ended up booking 3 rooms and it was a good day

I'm in NYC (Bklyn), and years ago I was in a store in Boro Park (where I'm now living over 40 yrs later) where it has a huge Hassidic Jewish community. I'm Irish and German but was raised Jewish and knew Yiddish (Jewish slang of German).
I went into a millinery store looking to try on hats, and a woman with her teen daughter was trying on hats and had alot of bags with them from shopping, and I told the girl that I thought the hat looked cute on her. So what does her mother do?? She told her daughter in Yiddish that she should watch their bags- as if I was going to steal them. I was beside myself, and I turned around and said- "Next time- make sure the person your talking about doesn't understand what saying!" She was in shock because I understood what she said, I then turned to the sales girl and thanked her for her time- and walked out! I was more upset that that dork of a woman upset my shopping cause I really liked their hats, but it was a tiny store and I needed to get away from that idiot- nice education you taught your daughter lady!! 😣😡
