I use a pair of vice grips near the top of the rod to hold to undo the center nut. Do the job in 15 minutes. I've done 10+ now. Spray good penetrating oil about 1 hour before and let it soaked. NOT WD40 that stuff is crap. If you break a stud, drill it out and use a 5/16 bolt and nut to replace, grade 5+
same here plus the 17mm nut is so awkward to turn and to get too. I tried with a breaker bar but the breaker bar end is hitting the ground. I'm gonna do like the vid. I have an 06 mazda 3 hatch red and it's rusted like real bad i'm so tempted to scrap it or sell it and buy a new vehicle loool
Hi, I’ve been there recently myself and replaced one of the bolts. The original bolts are welded to the body, so it is a lot of work to get those out. It is done from inside the trunk after taking off the plastic cover. I was using a Dremel to cut off most of the welds and then used a hammer and punch to get the bolt out. Unfortunately I didn’t make a video about it.
Good luck, I hope you don’t have to replace it! Mine just snapped right of when I was trying to take the nut off. It didn’t even take much force when it happened.
One of he two bolts that the mount is attached to broke. It almost looks like it is welded to the body/frame of the mazda 3. Any thoughts on how to replace that?
Happened to my Mazda 5. Access to the bolts from the top is right under a cup holder. You need to grind off remnants of the bolt (welded on stud) from below, then drill through the top of the stud from above. Insert a new bolt of appropriate size. Ideally a helper from above can help you tighten the bolt when installing, or just rig a way for the wrench to stay in the right place. Shop wanted to take it to a body shop to remove half the interior before they would touch it.
MegaSafetyFirst thx man!Yeah I found out later about deep sockets which will fix my problem, thought I had to buy another ratchet size set at first Good video 👍
@@MegaSafetyFirst Sorry, that probably came across as rude because everything was seized and I was in a horrible mood. But the top nut part saved my sanity today and I really appreciate the video. Thank you.
You should of removed the shock entirely to inspect it. Now you’re just costing this customer double future work. The shock can be damaged due to bad mounts. I know this cause it happened to mine. Mounts and shocks should all be replaced at same time
You helped me to save 100$ charges for mechanic. Thank you very much
Glad to hear! Thank you for your feedback 👍
Great video! Didn't realize it is so simple! Thanks!!
Thx this helped a lot.
I first couldn't loosen the nut from on top of the nut.

I use a M8 - 1.25x50mm and weld it up top. Then use Anti-seize lubricant so you don't have to go through that again.
Thanks for the vid- I couldn't get the 17 mm bolt off to get the shock off because it is rusted so much but I will try doing this!

Mine broke the axact same way yesterday, I had to drive it broken for 300 miles to get home.
I imagine, if you put a little bit of oil on the bolts it would be a lot easier on the nuts.
Excellent idea, thx!
The bolt in the rear mount is messed up and wont come out, can I cut the screw and replace it, do you have a solution for the problem

@@MegaSafetyFirst ok thanks that's why I don't want to break it

So when you hearing sound coming form the back of your car it can be the strut mount broken?
Possibly. The sound would be very loud.
@@MegaSafetyFirst yeah when driving you hear it coming from the back
Did you remove the tire to get better access or just lift the car up?

That one of the bolts breaks was always a fear of mine. Sorry, I don’t have a solution for that problem.

Hey I need to know fast what’s the ratchet size needed?cant believe nobody said which one is needed bought the 1/4
The 1/4" ratchet will work. That is what I was using in this v video.

Good video 👍
Take the shock off, takes 2 minutes and will make your job so much easier. Easier still if you replace the shock(s).
Where did you buy your mount from?
I found it in the local auto parts store
It's a shock, not a strut. But thanks.
Thanks for pointing that out. 👍
No one noticed before.
