Hit a pot hole last night in my 2008 mazda 3.. sounds pretty much the exact same on the rear passenger side, glad to know its just the rear strut mount. Thanks!
Helpful info sir. I went over a bad pothole then I started getting this exact sound in my Mazda 3. Brought to my guy and he's doing both rear shocks and struts (10 yr old car never replaced) 550 bucks. Living in the Northeast puts my car through a beating.
I was driving from SC to Pittsburgh PA and hit a bad patch of highway in WV and this noise started. I rearranged my luggage and tools in the back of my Mazda 5 and pulled over 4 times before looking under the wheel well and discovering exactly what you showed in the video. Drove it the 220 miles home thinking I could crash at any minute. Wish I had seen this video at the time. Would have eliminated a lot of stress! Haha 😅🤣
Rear clunking can be difficult to pinpoint. That is why having a car on lift is helpful here. 1. visual inspection, if items look worn and say old, then maybe just replace them, for example rear sway bar links and bushings are usually not expensive to by and not to difficult to replace. Note I am talking about a front wheel drive mid price to entry level vehicle. 2. moving a component by hand or with a pry bar. If you can move a component by hand its probably bad. For most front wheel drive cars the back will have strut and coil spring. The top strut mount could be bad and /or the coil spring seat. It can be hard to diagnose these as bad. And if the car has over 100k miles and you know you have not replaced them since ownership, then probably need to just be replaced. Once the strut and spring are taken out for inspecting those parts, based on the parts cost there is really no reason not to just them replace both. Its recommended that these be replaced in pairs. And then you say....well I have had the car for say 4 years, or if you bought it and it does not appear to have new parts on it and the back struts looks old, not leaking yet, maybe just replace them also? And working on struts/springs can be dangerous. Best to let a professional deal with those items.
i basically went to this guy who didn't charge me anything to take a look at my car and he said that the rear differential mounts were broken off so it was making that noise
