    Guys! I did some more research on this cart, it did in fact have a two-stroke low profile engine and that big hole in the back or that Tecumseh 3 horse it's was not there. The exhaust would run through the hole in the back and it would suck in air from underneath the frame, hope you guys read this I did like three hours of research, and haven't slept at all. Hope this helps guys! And I hope you get this message!! P.S. the cart you have was built to run on a Mini Daytona 500 Style track one shorter adult would get into it and race it around there aren't usually 20 to 30 other racers in similar cars.

      I know a lot of race karts of that era used McCulloch kart engines. They are rare now too, but out there. Idk if that was what was on it, but maybe a good choice to keep it vintage.

    Shouldn't the brake flappers (the part that contacts the tires) be facing down? Maybe that's why your connecting arm is so low to the ground - it has to be up.

      Its a self-boosting system, kinda. Just like in better drum brakes both brake shoes are "leading". When the flappers are like that, the tire tries to grab it instead of pushing it away, it makes the brakes much, much more powerfull.

      These expensive karts were sold to people with paved driveways... or went to kart tracks... mall parking lots... weren't expected to be used off road on grass/dirt... prolly came with cheap 2 1/2 HP Clinton A490 2 cycle engines... main expense was designing/fabbing/molding/producing the fibreglass body... and, yes, it had like self-energizing 'power brakes'...

    Ok , guys after way more talk with Dad about the Indy carts we had they were "pro kart" racing models. The Engine was a McCulloch. We can not remember HP but was not just 3, and they had dual tanks on on each side so you could run the entire race with out stopping to refuel. Go karat racing was a super big thing here back then, Dad got them so his Boys could race. Like I said there was a Track for racing them just a 1/4 mile south down the road we lived on next to the Drive in Movie place. The ones we were a bit more deluxe than this model you guys have found. But it will still be nice to see it live again. Currently I have a gas powered mini flat bed semi truck sitting in my storage shed for the last 13 years now. Wow, been that long, "health reasons" have stopped me from bring it out for parades, four seats fit on the flat bed and riders sat there for the Veteran days parades. We made tons of cool things from Trains to "riding out houses" , most are made from broken down scooters and wheel chairs, so most electric. You should be using a complete suit with face cover and out side air source when sand blasting guy, safety first.

They were 2 stroke engines back then, and these carts were faster than the cars that drove down the street, you blew them away from a standing start like nothing. To just this week end my Dad still says the carts would go a 100 mph in a straight line run, I think it was more to a scale. Still mad at Mom, remember her shaking as she got out after driving one and telling Dad they were way to fast for the kids and get rid of them

    My thoughts seeing this frame is that you should restore it and the original body keeping everything 100% original and put it on the wall. While you have the kart apart reverse engineer the frame and make upgrades. Get a casting of the body so you have a new shell. Whether the rights to the design have expired or not you can still make one for personal use for entertainment and for sentimental value. Then if later down the line you guys partner with gopowersports to offer a 700 dollar Indy Kart 2.0 or something just check with a lawyer. I love the restorations and the mods and I still want to see those videos, but I think a series about building a kart from scratch/duplicating an old kart would be awesome new ground for you guys to break and something cool and different to do. Any which way it ends up I can't wait to watch.

    • @earlklos6549
      @earlklos6549 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In a reply to the previous video I suggested making molds as well. I called it an Ikejohn kart. If they reproduce the body for sale, they can't call it anything that's been used. Factory Five ran into this problem with their Cobra reproduction. They changed the name to the "Mark II" and have been selling Cobra-esque cars without issue. If the price wasn't crazy, I'd buy one and build my own chassis.

      I like your idea,but if they kept the theme just changed it a little bit like you said, 2.0 there wouldn't be any legal issues. Fiberglass is very easy to change shapes and the frame designs are limitless. They could make one that handles like a dream. Tubeular Chrome moly frame maybe? It would be spendy put a big engine w/torque converter & haul some serious ass.

      I think that just doing the frame in tube or box section would be enough to make it a legitimately different frame for production. But if the guys want to make their own exactly like the other one that is still totally legal as long as they don't make a whole bunch of them and start selling them for profit.

    • @thomascaffrey5572
      @thomascaffrey5572 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes,most definitely the theme should not be changed. I must've forgot to mention that part. I did write a kinda long comment. My bad.😋 did you happen to see the guy who built a 100mph off road kart? He put a 4 cyl, I think Honda street bike engine on this thing, ATV tires. I think quad suspension front & rear. Probably quad rear axle too. It's pretty damn ugly my opinion. But this thing? Idk I'm improving with the person of it really. If I can find it again want me to post the link? I have a Yamaha Blaster the engine is seized and is cracked. I also have an 83 ATC 185 excellent running engine & electrical system. It gave me some really good ideas. There's also a guy that build a yz85 powered kart on TH-cam,his does 67mph. I wonder what I could get my 185 to do? Probably arrested and a huge ticket,huh?🙂

  • @AgentWest
    @AgentWest 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The cart will look awesome once restored. Glad you decided to keep the paint.
    Do have a few suggestions:
    1) Add grease fittings or at least oil holes to the pivots (the steering shaft support, the shaft that holds brake pads on, that kind of stuff). Drill a hole in the outer sleeve, then weld a nut over it for threads since those sleeves are so thin.
    2) For the brake lever being so low: Cut it off and re-weld on top of the shaft. Take a length of chain, connect to the lever, then route it to the back and around a small guide wheel (small pulley from a mower maybe?), then connect it to the link from the pedal right below the frame.
    3) For the grilles do what audio guys do: make a two-part mold from MDF or plywood, put the metal mesh between the two parts, and drive a truck over the contraption to act as a press. Instant shaped grilles! That will allow you to stamp all sorts of designs into the mesh, and at the very least give it a nice edge instead of just epoxying a flat piece to the inside. If you guys want i can do that and probably even stamp your logo into them.

    As someone that mines and separated sand for a living, I can definitely tell you that it is very dangerous. It causes what is called silicosis which is a type of lung cancer. Luckily, the type of separating I do is less dangerous because there is little to no dust. I am grateful for the fact you caught this John.

Each kart featured a fiberglass body in Lotus green and yellow, wearing Clark's #92, with a gasoline-powered engine in the rear. Pedwin was a brand of the Brown Shoe Company of St. Louis, Missouri.

    You can still use silica sand for sand blasting, you just need to use a proper respirator to protect yourself from the silica dust, also doing it on a windy day outside significantly reduces your exposure to the silica dust. Silicosis is the medical term for lung damage caused by silica dust. There are a few comments suggesting the use of glass beads instead of silica sand, but glass is made from silica sand, so it acts in the same manner when it impacts the object being sand blasted. It shatters into tiny jagged pieces of silica that get lodged in your lungs and cause scarring of the lung tissue as it makes tiny cuts in your lungs.

    Sand blasting is old school these days. Soda blasting is the best way to go. Is not so harsh on the material being stripped and doesn’t give you silicosis, which is a really nasty lung condition. And of course there is no cure.
    Love the videos. Keep up the amazing work!!!!

    I been watching this channel for a while now getting different ideas here and there. Right now just collecting pieces & parts. I'm going to use a honda ATC 185 engine and maybe the axle because it already has brakes and bearings. It's axle is on the short side. I may just buy an aftermarket extended axle and maybe spacers too. Probably pick up an old quad for front suspension & steering. I want more power than I'll ever need so it's really probably going to be a little dangerous,but not a murder mobile. I think I'll probably start with the 185,later probably put a 250 dirt bike engine on it? Yeah those doors look pretty good. I have an old 77 Chevrolet C20 converted to K20. Has computer vortech 350,& hydraulic dump bed. The tolerances in those old trucks weren't very good in the 1st place. Your door gaps are probably better than it was when it was new. Mine was completely torn apart and repaired/ painted about 18yrs ago, needed a buncha shims in the fenders for pretty good gaps. I use it so I didn't make them perfect,I still get alota compliments on it. His name is Old Blue electric blue ppg 2stage and blue inside. & I put the premium 8 lug alloys 1997 Chevy 75 dana 44 front axle 77 corporate 14 bolt out back w/ Detroit locker. No leafs that's now custom built 5 link with heavy duty bags. It's been driven sea/ord back & forth probably 4 times,rear ended numerous times has a small scratch. Just can't kill them old Chevy trucks. The 3 cars that have hit me...they totaled themselves.🙂

    Back in day Brigs wouldn’t put there engines on anything that children were able to operate for liability reasons. Tecumseh , Clinton and McCulloch 2 stroke engines were the most common. If your mini nicks or go cart had a brigs it was changed out by the owner. The engine you have is a preformance / racing engine ( the aluminum flywheel ). The smaller flywheel and points/coil units were used on the 5hp engines. Port and polish mount the carb to the block and strigh pipe tuned to the engine and you were racing. Parking lots and Fairgrounds were popular places to organize an event if a track was not nearby. A good time had by all.

    Solid rear axle and disc brake wouldn't detract from the looks of that kart, also might be a good idea to add a little bracing to that cold noodle frame, haha. Seriously though, keeping it completely original won't mean much if you fold the frame in half hitting a bump the wrong way. I really dig how wide it is though, it will look sick with some racing wheels and tires.

    Did some sandblasting professionally in the past. The black stuff looked like black beauty, which is ground up metal slag that we used to sandblast really hard stuff like epoxy coatings and the like. Definitely hardcore stuff you don't want to use on thin metal. Look into other blasting media like soda and the like. A lot more gentle on stuff like thin metal and brick and things you want to damage as little as possible.

    I still say it would be cool to build a new chassis with round bar and swap over or replicate the steering and suspension components.
    On a side note, it wasn't the using of a "thicker" media, it was the mixing of the media that caused the jams in the sandblasting unit. I did the same thing with walnut shells and the black silica. And that whole cancer scare stuff is only if you do not use a respirator or filter mask and have EXTREMELY LONG exposure. Kind of like black lung for coal miners.

    Q? does the fibre glass body form a strengthening member once bolted into situ, hence the rather simple ladder frame?

    • @dootslayer1402
      @dootslayer1402 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Meh...fiberglass isn't THAT strong, but it might do a bit. The chassis still flexed with the body bolted on when it was on its side and they checked it, so not really...

      If ever in a fibreglas boat, know it can be quite rigid, but this thing flexed to keep all tires on ground on uneven surfaces...

    I think you should look around for a Wankel (Sachs) engine from an early-to-mid '70s Arctic Cat snowmobile or an OMC/Johnson/Evenrude rotary used in motorboats. If I remember correctly, the Arctic Cats were rated at 19 horsepower and "revved to the moon" as they used to say!

    hey guys, I know you think the frame is crap because it's flexible but karts depend on flex in the frame for good handling. It allows them to lift the inside rear tire in turns so the rear tires aren't fighting each other in the turn. Real race karts are very flexible

    Lots of comments on this already. Honestly I would go with modern frame brakes and wheels so you can put a bigger engine on it. Use old frame as pattern so body fits, but use tube frame with proper support bracing. Seen the rail so I know you can do it right.

  • @travis4798
    @travis4798 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd say do a Restomod. Throw on disk brakes, maybe some engine mods, a set of coils on the front to absorb bumps a bit better and clock the spindles for better handling.

  • @ArienFrost
    @ArienFrost 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't believe that this is very original. For one there are crooked cuts in the body to fit the body everywhere. It looks more like someone built it in the garage, out of the wreak of the original gokart, within a few hours or something. Though this is not necessarily a negative, hotrods and choppers springs to mind and folk art.. I would not mind knowing just how original it realy is thou.

    I use play sand for sandblasting because it's clean and dust free. Drawback is you have to dry it. I put in on cookie sheets and pizza pans in the oven at 500 degrees until its dry.

    Crushed walnut crumbs,are the 'new sand blast material'.Saw the doors in the last vid,and wondered.I'm wondering if the cart wasn't "Carnival" built too..?..as in .50cents for 5 laps..type.? Have another Great New Year too.

    • @tinkerne-round4079
      @tinkerne-round4079 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crushed walnuts don't work on rust or even paint very well. I have a #500 pot, and a 125 CFM joy compressor from a sandblasting business I used to operate. The only thing I used walnuts on was a log cabin to take the age off and give it a rough sawn look. Plastic beads (crushed buttons) will remove paint, but wont do much to rust. If you want grey metal you need abrasives.

    There is merit in having a flexible frame it's like inbuilt suspension. A rigid frame is what you what when you are using suspension, but in a rigid axle setup a little flex will help.

  • @johnmatthews1802
    @johnmatthews1802 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay guys here's what you do you build a subframe that attaches to but does not modify the existing frame so that your subframe stiffens up and cross braces as it should and perhaps even reaches to the end of the axles for extra bearing support
