  • Narrowboat painting tips from www.johnbarnard.biz
    In this video, which forms the second part of a series, John Barnard sets out to share some of the tips used by professional boat painters for getting the best possible results when attempting a full narrowboat repaint. John describes some of the equipment used to get a boat back to bare metal and how to prepare the surface for the first coat of paint.
    John runs a traditional narrowboat painting business from his base at Debdale Wharf near Market Harborough.

    Best boat paint video I have seen, so many young people doing it all wrong, with no PPE

    I've never used a scabbler. What happens when it hits a patch of filler? Presumably it all comes off and you have to refill?

    • @JohnbarnardBiz
      @JohnbarnardBiz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi it depends on how think the filler is, you may just take the paint off the top of it, if it was a job I was doing I would get rid of the old filler and start from scratch

    Hi John, I was impressed with the way your first angle grinder dispatched the top coat of paint. Could you tell me what attachment was fitted, ie. Course Sanding disc 30 grit maybe (dont think) or some other kind of abrasive ( more likely)

    • @JohnbarnardBiz
      @JohnbarnardBiz  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Terry, it's actually a polisher fitted with a scabbler attachment - it runs slower than an angle grinder making it more controllable. Similar bits of kit are pretty widely available from hire shops.

      Hi John. I picked up the Makita PC5010C concrete planer to do my hull prep for 2 part Jotastic epoxy resin (not to take off any blacking - that's all scraped off). Do you think I can use this tool with a standard concrete grinding disc to the same effect (www.amazon.co.uk/Diamond-Grinder-Disc-Wheel-Cuttig/dp/B01BYFTKCS) or do I need a scabbler disc with the 4 set of teeth on it? If so, where can I get one from? I'm out on hard standing right now, any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Should the bare steel be given a protective coating within 30 minutes of exposing it to the air?

    • @bessie2275

      Depends on the humidity, if the boat is afloat in a dock the humidity will be high
