  • Comedian Milton Jones joins Rob to talk about how he got started in comedy, when he first became aware of stand-up comedy through Saturday Night Live and his current tour ‘Milton Impossible’. He also talks about the challenges of doing longer sets with an act which essentially consists only of one-liners, how he got into this style of comedy, and he even treats us to a couple of his favourites!

Enjoyed this - Milton is very down to earth, as I discovered hosting him at Wicked Hathern Fest, we couldn’t persuade him to trouble us for anything and went and bought his own food and drink from the festival site (despite the option of a private green room) - possibly the most approachable and polite act we’ve ever had… and he smashed the comedy stage too! Top comedian, lovely fella 😃

After all the joy, laughter and intellectual delight that Milton has delivered over the years, I will put it out there that Milton is the comedian’s comedian.
Watch the incredulous laughs that he always gets from other comics on Mock The Week…. They are often in awe of his capacity to finagle a jest out of nowhere.
And please tour Australia (particularly Western Australia) again.
Thanks again for all the laughter.

    • @ashleyp.4932
      @ashleyp.4932 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree with you... although I have to be honest and say I'm wary of what I see on Mock the Week as being as spontaneous as it appears.
"Let's spin the wheel..." the subject comes up, and whoever goes to the microphone has a routine ready (because the subjects picked are based on that comedian's act).
Also, with the "Scenes We'd Like to See" I do believe they are fed the titles in advance, so they have time to work on a few gags to get themselves warmed up... after all, it wouldn't be such exciting TV if the topic was revealed and we then had five minutes of them standing there working out the jokes.

As he said about the violinist, Milton's very pared-down jokes give off that feeling of watching a master craftsman. You can tell he pays attention to every single syllable of his gags being just so - and then he produces so many of them he has to consider audience fatigue! Really amazing skill

I really enjoyed that. Rob is a good interviewer, and I think him having a lot in common with Milton just made it better. And I'm a big fan of Milton - I really like his approach to comedy, and the relentless series of one liners that leaves you grasping at the laugh for the current joke, while you're still processing the previous one. Not many comics stand out as different, but he does.

I saw Milton do a set at a festival a few years back, his 'magic tree' joke had me dying. It was simple, got predicatble towards the end but was still just really funny.

Every time you see Milton Jones on TV, which is rarely, he always impresses. He is really funny, but then, he disappears off-screen, again. He's an "Oh, he's funny! What's his name, again?" kind of bloke.
I'll have to make an effort to go and see one of his shows.

His warmth as an interviewee, and this generosity (in giving credit to his wife) in discussing process, was a pleasant and much appreciated surprise.
    Charming.
Another lovely interlude for me. Ta. 😊

I heard him talking in another interview about his son telling him a joke he'd made up. That joke, in a different form, ended up in a radio show, and he gave his son a writing credit on the show. Afterwards his son came running up to him and said "Dad, did you hear? One of the writers has the same name as me!"

I love the way he thinks. Two Milton jokes that come to mind:
“About a month before my grandfather died, we covered his back with lard. After that he went downhill very quickly.”
“My aunt Marge has been so ill for so long that we've started to call her I can't believe she's not better.”

I had a job in a pathology lab, but I was asked to leave after one of my reports said cause of death "Autopsy."
This one took a second but it's also why I love it - “Some people say that firefighters deserve more money, but apparently a poll was taken and they all fell through a hole in the floor.”

the second joke doesn't make sense..because if she's been ill for so long why would expect her to get better? i udnerstand marge means margarine but still..

@@emilydavids209 There used to be, maybe still is, a butter substitute called I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter. So it’s a typically-absurd Milton Jones joke about Marge and butter. No, it doesn’t make sense logically, but I like the fact that no-one else could tell that joke and make it funny.

Just want to say, thanks for creating these short interviews. I really wish it was a talk show on TV, akin to Parkinson where (as you do), you give the person gets a chance to talk and give a bit more insight into themselves. I'm not sure if these interviews li k into tours or promotions but I would love to see you chatting with Jasper Carrott and like him, a few more old school entertainers 👍
Anyway, this is another cracking video, thanks again, Neil

Well, this is where the talk show has migrated. I can't abide the ones on TV now, with Z list 'celebs'. Boring. It's great to be able to pick and choose who you want to listen to. I'd love it if Rob would interview some of the Old Skool comedians like Jasper.

@@Kotka67 that's a fair point. Maybe I was just reminiscing about when talk how's were enjoyable and guests given time to speak. But, yes, as I mentioned, I would love Rob to talk to some comedy legends while they are still with us 👍
