As a professional effects artist, I have used silicone many times. This was fantastic! I just watched your octopus-shoes video, and chuckled a bit as I recognized all the beginner "learning moments" that we ALL go through! You had a few set-backs, but you persevered, and learned a lot through the process! That's what it's all about; we've all been there! And that experience with silicone gave you the confidence to try this new technique. You knew where to go, what questions to ask, you knew how to experiment, the benefits and limitations of your material, and came out with AMAZING silicone pieces!!! A makeup effects artist might have glued these directly onto an actor's skin, and they would have looked incredible. You, a dress designer, glued them onto sheer flesh-colored fabric, and the look was almost exactly the same. (I understand that the process of the "Mystique" makeup went from eight hours of gluing individual pieces on Rebecca Romijn to a sheer body-suit for Jennifer Lawrence's later performances. So you're on the right track!!) The placement of the metallic pieces on the skin, how they flowed with your body, the placement of the fabric bodice and skirting pieces accentuated your form in all the right ways. The sheer-ness may have looked like a lot of "skin," but the basics were really quite modestly covered, and the shaping was extremely flattering. You ROCKED your runway walk! You should be extremely proud!!
This is one of the most amazing things I have seen in terms of fashion; how the silicone spine looked like it was genuinely protruding from skin, how it stood out without any post production editing and just was able to come to life on stage. It takes a group of designers with decades in set fashion design to create this. You did it with the help of a friend in months. Be proud of yourself Shay! I was in AWE at how you were able to DIY something along the lines of NY fashion week.
I don't find this dress scandalous at all! It shows a bit of skin yes but in a really fancy and sexy way and in no way does it show too much skin!! Omg. This is such a fabulous look. It came out amazing, especially considering the use of new techniques and difficult materials. Absolutely jaw droppingly creative and gorgeous and cool. I know wearing it and posting that much body on the internet must feel vulnerable, but to me, as a viewer, the coolness overshadows the sheerness and my brain doesn't interpret it as exposed body somehow. Plus all the bits that need covered per body conscious social norms are well covered.

I LOVE IT! Doc Oc is one of my faves, and the dress is AMAZING. Years ago I was an orderly in a surgical unit, and for back surgery, sometimes these electrode type things were used to monitor the nerves in the spine. The techs who applied those monitors, folded pleats of tape onto their scrubs ready for them to use. The pleats on the dress completely reminded me of that tape! I love serendipity!

I've been playing with silicone molding and UV resin... small scale stuff, jewelry mostly. What I've found is that making the mold is only half the battle... casting it without winding up with a mountain of rejects/miscasts is the other half. I can't sculpt for crap, my fat sausage fingers smash everything, so I'm pretty impressed with the end result! Very awesome!

The placement of the metallic pieces on the skin, how they flowed with your body, the placement of the fabric bodice and skirting pieces accentuated your form in all the right ways. The sheer-ness may have looked like a lot of "skin," but the basics were really quite modestly covered, and the shaping was extremely flattering. You ROCKED your runway walk! You should be extremely proud!!

This is one of the most amazing things I have seen in terms of fashion; how the silicone spine looked like it was genuinely protruding from skin, how it stood out without any post production editing and just was able to come to life on stage.
It takes a group of designers with decades in set fashion design to create this. You did it with the help of a friend in months. Be proud of yourself Shay! I was in AWE at how you were able to DIY something along the lines of NY fashion week.

I don't find this dress scandalous at all! It shows a bit of skin yes but in a really fancy and sexy way and in no way does it show too much skin!! Omg. This is such a fabulous look. It came out amazing, especially considering the use of new techniques and difficult materials. Absolutely jaw droppingly creative and gorgeous and cool. I know wearing it and posting that much body on the internet must feel vulnerable, but to me, as a viewer, the coolness overshadows the sheerness and my brain doesn't interpret it as exposed body somehow. Plus all the bits that need covered per body conscious social norms are well covered.

I LOVE IT! Doc Oc is one of my faves, and the dress is AMAZING.
Years ago I was an orderly in a surgical unit, and for back surgery, sometimes these electrode type things were used to monitor the nerves in the spine. The techs who applied those monitors, folded pleats of tape onto their scrubs ready for them to use. The pleats on the dress completely reminded me of that tape! I love serendipity!

I've been playing with silicone molding and UV resin... small scale stuff, jewelry mostly. What I've found is that making the mold is only half the battle... casting it without winding up with a mountain of rejects/miscasts is the other half. I can't sculpt for crap, my fat sausage fingers smash everything, so I'm pretty impressed with the end result! Very awesome!
