Salut ! It took me a good amount of time to make this vid happen, but looking at the result and your comments, I feel like it was so much worth it... Ok, now you do me solid : Share this vid on social media and tell your friends why they need to watch it. Oui, It really helps. Peace 🤜🤛
It woud be great if you had a collaboration with Alec Steele. He's a well-known blacksmith from the UK with his own TH-cam channel. He's specialised in Damascus steel.
N'hésite pas à me contacter.
dude, you continue to surprise. I imagine most people would do a collaboration and be done, but to see you comment on a completely unrelated video to your own, you sir have my respect. I really don't know where you find the time. I am tracking that this was prior to your video, but in fairness I only found Alex's channel after watching the meat-tenderizer video. It's awesome that you'd go out of your way to send out the great vibes.
These are the kind of content that makes the difference you are not just a great cook but an inventor! Thanks. Always making my weekends interesting haha.
You are fearless. I wanted to thank you for your classic omelet series. I have seen many videos of this from Julia Child to Jacque Pepin and never tried to make one. Showing all your mistakes finally inspired me to try it. It is now my favorite way to eat eggs. I suppose your next challenge might be Japanese Omurice. I have seen videos of the classic omelet served over a dome of fried rice with gravy. Maybe you can use your new chefs knife to split the omelet over the rice when served before the customer.
As a knife enthusiast, collector, maker, and as someone who simply loves to cook; I tip my hat to you good sir. Job well done. I love your content and although I haven't been watching for a long time, I am definitely someone who will be looking forward to more videos like this one. Chefs that make their tools have a better appreciation for the craftsmanship. That knife will be a tool for life.
what i like about this video is that it really shows how well the train infrastructure in france is, the simple fact that you're able to go from paris to nantes and back in one day (around 500 miles) amazes me. Anyways great video.
Erik Rosas try doing that distance in the USA, 1 no trains to speak of, 2 you use the bus, 24 hrs at least of disgust, low life riders and possible police raids looking for drugs.
That sucks.. But as they say; When Democrats stay home, Republicans get elected.. And they only want tax cuts... Lets hope for a change soon, so things can get better! Best wishes from Europe..
I love that you make content like this. It’s always really humbling and gives you respect for all the craftsmen who work hard to give you the tools for your own craft.
This is one of the the most genuine cooking videos I have ever seen. Make you're tools then make your food. Great message and your are learning so much.
Yes! Alex, I used to work for a heat-treater. Most folks do not understand the importance of cortect temperature in forging steel. Beautiful vid! Educational, Entertaining, and seamless videography! Bravo, use your new tool in good health for many years!
The most impressive thing in this video is that you managed to find a train, that's an accomplishment in and of itself. Merci la SNCF. Cool video though, as a cooking and a blacksmithing enthusiast i thoroughly enjoyed the video.
Love the thought process behind the look of the blade! That you see the work and effort to make the blade but also the shine and polish showing you the perfection.
So nice to finally see someone with original content again, it's crazy how much I'm enjoying this channel. I have been watching for about a year or 2 now, and I must say this is the best channel I have ever stumbled upon. Keep up the amazing and hard work Alex. Au Revoir.
I am very glad you decided to venture out in other things a bit, I think doing episodes like this which relate to cooking in a significant way (but aren't specifically cooking) is very smart.
When one Frenchman asks another Frenchman: "Do you have onions?" 11:21 You know they all have onion necklaces, baguettes and berets just laying around...
This is very fun, I travelled to New Zealand and we took a road trip between the two islands and after going to Christchurch we saw an ad to forge your own blade at an old farm. It was so much fun, we did everything ourselves. From the inital heating of the metal to the forging and the polishing of the blade of the end product also adding a wooden handle. The most fun i've had on a trip in a long time!
Thank you so much, as always, for seeking out this experience and sharing it with us. We get to live vicariously through your exploration, and reap the fruits of your curiosity. Cheers!
Alex, you're a next level food TH-camr! I mean, not only you share recipes- you share your discoveries with food. En plus, this epic video! I see you, I definitely see passion! Love you Alex!
This youtube video was Art, absolutely beautiful directing and soundtracking - every video is great but this one particularly stands out as masterful. The slow-mo footage was a great addition and the sound engineering to bring out the focus of what you are filming was subtle and powerful. Fantastic.
WOW this was so cool to see a chef I really enjoy doing blacksmithing, a trade I'm very fascinated with! What a super cool cross over - the more we understand what we use and where it comes from the richer our experiences will become... Thank you so much for the video, what an awesome treat!
Wow! I LOVED watching this video. You both did a great job. The town is beautiful and Robin's shop is so quaint and rustic. I love the old-world feel of it. Thanks!
Jean Duchemin I’ve been to France and most of the people I spoke to in English (because I didn’t speak French) answered me in French. So, they knew exactly what I was asking for and that I didn’t speak French, but still chose to answer in French.
So you come to France without speaking French, and you say that locals are arrogant because they could understand you (because they probably did learn some English, or at least made an effort to understand you) but they replied in French probably because they couldn't do otherwise ? Typical from native English speakers, which I assume you are (correct me if I am wrong). You, lady, are arrogant.
Do you like...have a camera crew that goes with you? Or are you as outstanding a director/producer/editor as you are a cook? Seriously how did you get the all angle slomo shots of the hammering without shots of other equipment in the background and do all the hammering at the same time? I am in awe at your filming skills 🤤
groovypullet Watch the shots. Some of the time, you can see both his hands and the image is stable; those are tripod shots or otherwise stabilized camera shots. When the image is dynamic, he's only using one hand; he's using a selfie stick/monopod for those.
Just found out your channel, watched a couple videos... I really like the vibe! The whole "learn" atmosphere you create in every video make them very interesting to watch, plus the whole positivity you transmit makes me very glad to find this on youtube. Cheers from Brazil!
Alex, I thought I cannot like your vlog and your work more than I did, but here you go with a video about smithing which is the second most fascinating thing for me after cooking. I'm completely blown away. You have all the kudos I have to give :D
I love this series Alex! You are the one that mafe me pick up my knifes and sharpen them and to try more things in the kitchen as in general (I actually started learning french)! Keep up the good work, love from Argentina!

I hope this channel is making you rich, Alex. Your take on these topics is so much more honest and interesting than anything on "food" television anymore. This video was another great, new, exciting idea. Salut!
At first I was like "man, enough with the knife sharpening already!" but then I found it interesting and was like "sorry, I forgot that you can make anything worth watching, please continue". Thumbs up!

So many of my videos have properly written subtitles dude ! All the community is helping on that. Automatic subtitles can't work tho, as my accent is sliiiiiiiiiiighlty too thick.
Alex French Guy Cooking really ? Thought it was automatic only ! If the community writes the subtitles then i'm very grateful ! Really appreciated. But you know, even with your thick accent, cant hurt to put automatic english it will always be better than automatic french or dutch or some strange setting i've seen !
I truly understand your fascination. There are a few knife making guides here in Germany and I had the pleasure to forge a chef knife once myself, only I made a dasmascus blade. I have ALWAYS wanted to do this as well. Very cool video. I love to see the joy in your face when you accomplish the task. The finished chefs knife is gorgeous. Well done indeed.
I grew up in Pittsburgh PA. Working in a specialty steel plant was part of growing up. The various machines are fun but hard work. How about the smell that gets in your clothes and up your nose. I love your video and the memories it brought back. Thank you
A spectacular experience!!! Two masters of their respective crafts are helping each other learn and to create. I was blown away when the newly forged knife slit through the paper without disturbing the entire page. Tout était incroyable ❤️❤️❤️❤️🔪
Salut Alex ! Cette vidéo m’a fait pleurer! J’ai fait mes études à Nantes et maintenant elle me manque trop ! La gare, le château, Lieu Unique... c’est comme si j’y retourne ! Super cool couteau, félicitations :-)

You should do another vid in which you teach him how to cook something delicious; maybe carbonara pasta? BTW great vid!
If your taking requests, can you make champagne or maybe beer?
Awesome to see you forging!!
Forging video is not a forging video without Alec Steele
oh hi!
you two know each other?

Petition to get Alex to start a Spotify playlist ... the music is always fire on the videos
Agreed! Babish does this, and Alex has taste to rival Babish's
Yes please
Chillhop Music playlists have similar musics to his, but I'd love to hear his playlist as well.
10000% agreed
he has a soundcloud account. you can see the artist there. grolok panicrum i see is one of the favourites. soundcloud.com/french-guy-cooking

You are literally the food youtuber with the most diverse content ever.
Alex i love watching your vlogs! They are a mix of Education, Comedy and chill vibes! Keep them coming :)
So Bret, when will you invite Alex to the Philippines to cook with you? I would love to see that video.
Haha maybe soon! I'll link Erwan and him up together!
Great idea. They would have great chemistry.
couldn't agree more 😊
i agree, and he's a great guy. however, when its: How to Fry an Egg Ep.478 - it does get a bit much.

RHot kichi kichi omurice is what youre talking about, right?
Yoshi, they literally said that in their comment.
Awesome. What a great idea

its 385 km, less than 250 miles from Paris to Nantes wtf are you and the people that liked this comment smoking.
And what would a round trip of 250 miles each way be??
Erik Rosas try doing that distance in the USA, 1 no trains to speak of, 2 you use the bus, 24 hrs at least of disgust, low life riders and possible police raids looking for drugs.

Erik Rosas I was talking the total distance?????
I love that you make content like this. It’s always really humbling and gives you respect for all the craftsmen who work hard to give you the tools for your own craft.
beautiful!
Maybe you should make a ramen noodle maker!
You + here = honor
I want to cry - two of my most favorite people here !
You here, that was unexpected.
I found alex's channel threw one of your videos tony. Thank you.
Man you're the whole package. Whatever I do in life, I hope I do it in the way you approach cooking.
I remember reading a comment that said you’ll eventually start making your own knives...and here we go.
Pablo Panesso My word is my word 😎
Your new knife is elegant yet rustic. It’s beautiful.
Best cooking/blacksmithing channel in the world.
This is one of the the most genuine cooking videos I have ever seen. Make you're tools then make your food. Great message and your are learning so much.
Alex, knives and Blacksmithing? It's like the holy trinity!

This channel is amazing on so many levels !!! I really love and appreciate what you do Alex!
Greetings from Germany
I love your videos dude. Editing, content, shots. All awesome.

I got goosebumps looking at that knife cutting trugh the paper. Thats one piece of art!
This isn't a story about forging a knife but about forging a beautiful friendship ~
The forging, the video edit, the music... lovely!
I would have loved to see Alec Steele helping you. He's fun, teaches others a lot, and also has a kitchen in his shop. This guy was cool too though.
He has a kitchen !?
It's tiny but you can see it in the very beginning here th-cam.com/video/ZVFzioIgxiI/w-d-xo.html
Alex French Guy Cooking yes! Et je parle français ;)
All right. That's it. We make it happen. #youtube #makestheworld #smaller

azdgariarada Drizzle It Like Quench Oil
Love when you make a video that's different from just cooking and food related. Gives the channel some diversity. Nice job
I read the title and instantly upvoted. There's no way this isn't epic!
Everyone is like OMG a forge and blacksmithing, I'm like OMG I want his hoodie!!!! Great vid Alex, the inspiration is real.
cook a pizza in 15 sec, i dare you
Krister Kjørholt that would be entertaining

I can open a frozen tostinos pizza in 5 seconds.
After that its just what your definition of cooked is

Dude!!! This is so fucking metal!!! XD lol
This is METAL indeed !!!
Lyra Conejo literally
Syncing the hits from the hammer and power hammer to the music - such attention to detail! Great video as always Alex!
The lack of eye protection makes me nervous for you! It is cool you're doing this, but please, protect your eyes!
He is wearing glasses.
igotes Thanks. That's very reassuring.
Wow! I LOVED watching this video. You both did a great job. The town is beautiful and Robin's shop is so quaint and rustic. I love the old-world feel of it. Thanks!
Man At Arms: French Guy Edition
2400 likes, 7 dislikes. This ratio says it all. It was another amazing video! You're killing it at the moment Alex.
I call FAKE!!!!! I cannot believe that there is another person from France (besides Alex) that can actually speak English!!!!!
panulli4 I think most of them can, they just don’t want to😬 French arrogance...😂
Ah, good ol' stereotypes
Jean Duchemin I’ve been to France and most of the people I spoke to in English (because I didn’t speak French) answered me in French. So, they knew exactly what I was asking for and that I didn’t speak French, but still chose to answer in French.
Thats not arrogance. Most of us are ashamed of our accent

i love everything about you...The cooking skills, the editing, the quality..EVERYTHING
His workshop looks a little like your kitchen and your kitchen looks like his workshop.
Congrats!
What I like the most about this video is the collaboration between you guys. Knife making is an art, just like cooking.
When the image is dynamic, he's only using one hand; he's using a selfie stick/monopod for those.
going off the stability i'd say he's definitely using a gimbal
Just found out your channel, watched a couple videos... I really like the vibe! The whole "learn" atmosphere you create in every video make them very interesting to watch, plus the whole positivity you transmit makes me very glad to find this on youtube. Cheers from Brazil!
You are a very entertaining film maker. A truly wonderful addition to my weekly top 10. The Casey Neistat of the culinary world, one could say.
Alex, I thought I cannot like your vlog and your work more than I did, but here you go with a video about smithing which is the second most fascinating thing for me after cooking. I'm completely blown away. You have all the kudos I have to give :D
"Putaine merde..."
Oi, dont think we didn't hear that, I might not know french but as someone who speaks spanish i understood that!
I love this series Alex! You are the one that mafe me pick up my knifes and sharpen them and to try more things in the kitchen as in general (I actually started learning french)! Keep up the good work, love from Argentina!
You did a great job with making that knife.
Dude this is SO amazing. What an experience and some great cinematography too. Well jel.
Have you ever tried making/experimenting food in anime that involved french cuisine like 300+ layer croissant (from Yakitate Japan)?
Honestly, that's probably the coolest looking knife I've ever seen, awesome job Alex.
Sehr gut!
I love the knife guy,he's so talented craftsmanship on that knife is amazing.
PLEASE TEAM WITH ALEC STEELE
Make a Damascus chef knife
Please
I definitely would like to see that happen!
dana anderson ALEC AND ALEX
dana anderson I'm game!
YES, karma does exist. Love you guys!! Do it, please. s'il vous plaît
Does anyone else have a pet peeve about people calling pattern welded steel Damascus? Damascus is a historical steel which we don't know how it was made and pattern welding is a modern technique to imitate how it looks.

I hope this channel is making you rich, Alex. Your take on these topics is so much more honest and interesting than anything on "food" television anymore. This video was another great, new, exciting idea. Salut!
You’re so likeable Alex!
How fun and educational.
Great to see Men applying artistry in practical ways in this throwaway world.
T'aurais pu parler français , le pauvre il était pas à l'aise x)
I felt for the guy, he was struggling with the language thing. I'd love to have heard him describe the process in French.
At first I was like "man, enough with the knife sharpening already!" but then I found it interesting and was like "sorry, I forgot that you can make anything worth watching, please continue". Thumbs up!
uff
I just couldn't help but laugh at the moment you did the papertest and both made that "ahhhh" sound. Great video
I don't want to laugh but why are the cups so small?
honestly thought it was just a stereotype.
I am guessing some stereotypes are just real. ( I am in the US at the moment, and those gigantic coffee buckets make me smile too ;) )
You would lol in Argentina then cause all my cups are gigantic!
This was a big shock for me returning to America after living in Australia for 2 years. All the plates and cups are HUGE in America (probably why we are such a fat country :x)
Blame the eater, not the plate :P
That is the standard size of a coffee cup. At least in a traditional UK coffee set. Is it different in the US?
There's nothing so satisfying than making your own tools. Great job!
Frenchman at Arms :p
This guy in genuinely smart.... He tries to learn and master from languages, food, electronics, knowledge and craftsmanship..... Props to him 👏
So awkward when people try to speak to another in another language. Still amazing content as always
As someone who knows that feeling quite well, I think It was very brave and generous of them to converse in English so that more people could understand the video without the need for subtitles.

Doesn't youtube automatically detect the language for automatic subtitles ? I don't know, it would seem logical to me..
you can change that btw. just click on automatic translation and choose a language ... there you go
I just went and subtitled the first two minutes because of this comment. hope it helps
Excellent work, and gorgeous knife, Alex. Thanks for sharing your time.
Production Quality 💯
So Awesome!!
I truly understand your fascination. There are a few knife making guides here in Germany and I had the pleasure to forge a chef knife once myself, only I made a dasmascus blade.

Glad you put all of this into one video. Most YT's would have made it 3 parts for the views. Respect
I have ALWAYS wanted to do this as well. Very cool video. I love to see the joy in your face when you accomplish the task. The finished chefs knife is gorgeous. Well done indeed.
Mais ce montage quoi !!! Magique !
Bravo Alex !
One of the only good TH-camrs left. You are amazing
Consistent quality and engaging content. That's why you are my favourite youtuber.
I grew up in Pittsburgh PA. Working in a specialty steel plant was part of growing up. The various machines are fun but hard work. How about the smell that gets in your clothes and up your nose. I love your video and the memories it brought back. Thank you
Fantastic video Alex! Was really not expecting something like this from you but I was pleasantly surprised!
A spectacular experience!!! Two masters of their respective crafts are helping each other learn and to create. I was blown away when the newly forged knife slit through the paper without disturbing the entire page. Tout était incroyable ❤️❤️❤️❤️🔪
I really enjoy these blog type videos. Your editing and music choice make them delightful
Salut Alex ! Cette vidéo m’a fait pleurer! J’ai fait mes études à Nantes et maintenant elle me manque trop ! La gare, le château, Lieu Unique... c’est comme si j’y retourne !
Super cool couteau, félicitations :-)
I love smithing. Forming metal to a specific use is so relaxing, while being also a thorough workout 😊
