Keep in mind we don't wanna lose Jamie to him creating his own successful youtube channel and blacksmithing workshop. Seems oddly specific, but I feel like there's something to it.
… then I would have TWO partners who created their own successful TH-cam channel and blacksmithing workshop. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Just by watching his channel (and others), I've been sort of able to give advice on the Baliscissors (butterfly scissors) project. Probably not great advice, but I do get a feeling why the scissor halves warp unpredictably after machining and grinding in the bevel. Alec too learned from the best, and following his channel (and That Works) gives a great insight into basic metallurgy without having to follow engineering courses. I'm not sure I could do half as well as Jamie though, but I do love the process of crafting and manufacturing.
This is a *perfect* example of the interaction between a *true* teacher and a student. Guiding, giving subtle hints, while still allowing them to make mistakes that they can recover from.
I would take a series where you take one or more people and teach them various blacksmithing skills, starting from something simplistic to more complicated things. Way to go Jamie.
when he first started his youtube channel. he us to teach people. You can see him making all them tools with a class in his very old clips. Alec even live streamed for awhile. shame he stopped them.
@@ItsAnArtform Just a theory, but I would bet covid had a huge factor on this. I was working in a makers shop before covid, and once the pandemic hit, not only did we get WAYY less commissions, but being around people in close proximity was a risk factor so we decided to shut down.
Awesome idea. A lot of us would love the chance to do something like that and Jamie is the perfect stand in, for us to see how that might turn out for us! Next: Alex vs Jamie!
You gotta get Jamie to make a makers mark for all the stuff he’s been making recently I love all this stuff you guys have been working on. Keep on the amazing work :)
Oooooh what a glorious episode! Technical input, learning to be had, from billet to finished product in one episode! I LOVE IT !!!! Thank you Jamie and Alec!! Best regards from Norway!
You should do a series going through the ABANA (Artist Blacksmith Association of North America) curriculum, perhaps with some useful tips along the way for aspiring smiths. Enjoyed the video!
really appreciated the balance of letting Jaimie work it out but dropping hints. much more fun to watch, as opposed to a strict version. was really wholesome and gratifying to see Jaimie learn and Alec thrive as a teacher. if you'd just shown me the hammer id never believe it was some ones first.
You want a video of editing? Wouldnt that just inevitably result in an infinite regression of videos of editing of videos of editing of videos of editing...?
I wish I had a friend like you Alec. I've just found your channel and it's helping me through an incredibly tough time so thank you and keep up the great work.
An interesting short would be a bunch of clips of hammer swings counting how many strikes it takes to forge a hammer or whatever. Oooor a challenge between to smiths where they "bid" how few of strikes it'll take to make something
I gotta say, this one was a lot of fun to watch. Seeing the precision and power behind Alecs strikes with that sledge was really impressive. Also Jamie I thought you did an awesome job and did very well for your first time. I'd love to have this opportunity to learn from Alec and work beside him. Very cool, well done guys. Great episode
I think the way I learned to hole punch is continue on one side till the thinnest side cools faster then switch back and forth till it gives. Its fun when you get a nice and toasty biscuit in the sock
Loved this! I've missed your teaching videos, and this is a fantastic idea. Someone who has seen the whole process up close attempting to perform the creative task themselves. A great confidence builder for other new blacksmiths, that still ... drives home ... the point that sooner or later you need someone to help you. Even if they are gravitationally challenged. 😀
Suggestion: It would be awesome if on the end of the video if you show hammer being used on hot metal, how it does, the balance some commentary would be nice :) Awesome job both of you this was very nice and friendly as any learning should be :)
Another idea could be Jamie's blind trials. Jamie describes a project to Alec and sets a time limit. Alec creates and at the end, Jamie's drawing is revealed and Alecs finished article is compared to Jamie's drawing/ concept to see how closely it matches.
I just acquired a forge. When I return home, my blacksmithing journey can finally begin. Nice hammer Jamie, my first will be an old sledge hammer, transformed into a rounding hammer.
This clip shows it very clear how big difference does it make to start from a scratch and knowing nothing and how you perform when you watched someone doing that work (and document it) for some time. Comfort with tools, catching hints, knowing the process... It takes time and practice. He had his time watching, just needs a bit of time feeling how it's done. And it goes fast. Really good job. And i wish my first hammer would be as good :)
Kinda wish there was a bit more to this vid, Alec pointing out where Jamie went right, where he can improve, breaking down the features and effects Jamie got on his hammer because of how he worked it, and what Alec would have done to make it better
Passion, Pressure, and Personal pride. Those are my points of success. Got to love what you do, supply and demand, and if you won't buy it, most others won't either.
It is nice to see some of the onscreen cooperation between to guys doing projects. And allways fun to see ppl learning. Way to go jamie. You should make a nice display plate of wood and hang it at home. Beautiful and a good memory to have on the wall! -And it is one of those things your future guests would ask about and that would be a good conversation piece. :)
I must admit Alec! Seeing you work alongside someone else REALLY brings out the energetic Alec from when I discovered you years ago. I missed him 🥰 It's wonderful to see you filled with excitement over working the metal again AND filming! 😅 Hihi! PS; Jamie! Great work on that Hammer buddy! 😁👌

Jamie needs a maker's mark for all the new things he's gonna forge
Jamie needs a destroying mark
JS for Jamie's Sheet...
Not until he becomes a master
I was about to comment the same.
I was thinking exactly the same thing!!
Jamie's refusal to call the punch and drift by their actual names and instead calling them "small hole maker" and "big hole maker" is hilarious.
