I disagree, If the dog is properly trained it should be a pleasure to have around and not be a pain in the butt. I find most owners simply do not know what they are doing. Biggest mistake I see is people treating their dogs like humans, speaking and rationalizing with them. You must teach your dog what is acceptable and what is not and in so doing your energy level and how you communicate with your dog must be at a higher level of energy than they themselves are evoking. Most owners are far too neutral with their corrections and praise. Dogs need a clear message, that is Great or That is Bad! Your voice, tone, tenor, mannerisms need to clearly with zero gray area let the dog know where he stands. If he still does not get it you need to reliably escalate the praise and or correction. For example you tell your dog to sit (easiest command). If they do not sit it is worthless to say ‘Sit’ again with the same tone and tenor. You need to escalate to ‘SIT!’ If that does not get a response you need to escalate with the command again and a touch. If your dog learns that every time they do not listen, that you will reliably escalate, they will learn to heed very quickly

Approach the slip from the opposite direction as in the video. Make a turn to port, just before you're in line with the slip and the stern still has momentum to starboard hit hard reverse, like 80-90%, to get the boat moving, rudder centered, towards the slip in 1,5-2,5 knots depending how your rudder steers in reverse, gear in neutral (preferable) or idle reverse, steer with rudder and keep the speed up with short bursts if needed. When half length of boat is between the slip it's time to start concentrate on braking.
I tell you what, swing by the Philippines first and leave Oso with us while you cruise NZ and Australia, because I can't see how you're going to be getting him in there since they are so strict with their animal quarantine rules, you can pick him up again on your way back through. ;)
No don’t leave him in the P.I.s I’ll meet you outside the Great Barrier Reef and shove him under my shirt and you can visit him when you get to Queensland
So glad to see that y’all are crate training him from the beginning. Dogs are great and even as small as he is he can sense things we can’t. That will come in helpful at times. It is possible to teach him to do his business in a certain area of the boat when you’re underway. The sooner you start that sort of training the better. The crate serves 2 purposes: it will end up being a comfort to him and at the same time, dogs do not like to poo or pee where they sleep. So if that happens...,(particularly as he gets a little older), then you’ve either left him too long, (couldn’t hold it), or he could be sick. Congrats on your new addition!. Speaking from experience and being dog lovers, it's a mixed blessing. We moved on board our Gozzard 31 for full time cruising 1.5 years ago with our cocker spaniel Joey (aka Captain Cocker). She has been day sailing with us since a puppy and is the perfect cruising dog. She can go up and down the steps to the cabin by herself, but she is 9 so as she ages we will need to assist her. We have her trained to potty on the foredeck and keep a mop strapped to the deck so we can swab the deck every morning. She loves adventures on land, dinghy rides and hanging out with us 24/7. She is the easiest dog to have on a boat and we love her to the moon! Now the down sides. Being liveaboards, we don't have a car, so a vet may be a couple days away by boat. A year ago our other dog (16 yr old pom, who has since passed) was having difficulty breathing and it took us two days to get her to a vet). We are restricted on places we can go (are dogs allowed?), since we don't want to leave Jojo alone on the boat for long periods of time. Public transportation does not allow dogs, so we walk everywhere and are limited to those distances or need to rent a car. Due to covid we have been hanging out in PNW (Puget sound and San Juan islands). We plan to.leave the US soon and travel south to Mexico and parts unknown. We are concerned about taking Joey into other countries (ie importing policies and stray dogs having diseases). So will restrict our travels accordingly. We will keep Jojo with us until she crosses the doggie rainbow. But we will not get another dog until we eventually move back on land.
Jordan nails it. There’s always a “reason” not to do something you have been wanting to do... whether it’s time, money, or practicality (whatever that means...) but if it is important to you, you go ahead and do it and figure out the details along the way. My (unasked for) advice? Get Little Dude used to being groomed, nails cut, teeth brushed etc... because you’ll be doing a lot of that. We have a Cocker Spaniel and she’s not a fan of having her nails cut or her ears cleaned but it HAS to be done!
After watching sailing nandji i wouldn't personally have a pup on board, you have to ship them and leave them in quarantine for months sometimes, my heart would break
You can take a dog that size anywhere if you are determined to, and if not you make choices/plan in a way where you don’t have to leave the dog. You can choose to not stop at places and countries that do not allow dogs. This is totally doable
Yeah, I also thought of sailing nandji when I saw this video. Moving country to country with a dog is super tough and unfortunately it is the dog who gets left behind.
You are going to give this little guy the most amazing life full of love and adventure and it is wonderful. I smiled through the whole vid. My cheeks hurt.
To all the naysayers today, I think I have met you before. 36 years ago when I decided to get married you said mistake. When she got pregnant you said kids are a mistake. From housed to pets, cars, careers and many other things you said mistake, mistake, mistake. So glad I made all those mistakes. Yes sometimes it will be a pain to have a dog, just like with my two dogs two cats and 34 year old African gray parrot but it’s part of a full life. Congrats on the new family member, have fun, he’s awesome👍
Our pup looks just like yours... And he sails with us too. Congrats on the new addition to your family. Oso is shaping up to be a great boat dog already ⛵
Well, I watch a lot of sailing videos and it seems people who's pet dies or leaves the boat, makes their life a little easier. But I get it that you want some more action in your life to break up the monotony. Good luck
Bloody hell! Reading some of these comments makes it seem that Americans are more soppy about dogs than the British! Dog on a, relatively, small boat? Madness! Totally unfair on the poor bloody animal. However, it would seem that the question, asked in the post, is redundant - the dog is on board. I wish you, and the dog, all the best. For all those who disagree, the question was asked, I gave my honest answer.
Good idea I might try ! Sas goinfre to go for artificial grass….. Checked, itwork ‘s great on a balcony , soaking it behind the boat was also the idear
If crate training the ‘lil’dude’ it is a must to take them from the crate straight out to where they are meant to eliminate and then praise like crazy when they do.
I am crying happy tears for you guys, this is so sweet! You’re doing everything right, introducing new experiences and making them happy and making sure he’s comfortable. I have two 15 year olds aboard and they are my world, one of them is an Oso as well :)) cheers to boat dogs living their best lives!
Aww, little dude O'so is a darling. I've been watching you two since you bought Atticus. I love your videos. My husband and I sail an S2 9m on Lake Michigan. We dream of bluewater sailing. Not sure if it will happen but we can dream, right? . I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from you. I especially enjoyed your educational videos while you were on the hunt for Atticus ll. I'm a professional groomer of 23 years plus professional dog trainer. I own my own small grooming business and employ 5 people. I want to offer you help with the grooming and training of your new little guy if you'd like it. Congratulations on your new family member! And congratulations as you begin your journey on your beautiful new boat.
We have been watching you two (now three) for a few months and just love you all. I am a retired Air Force fighter pilot and my wife is a retired pastor (the drinking kind). We travel a lot and have found using a crate for our pooches is by far the best way to boat/travel. Get him use to the crate as soon as possible and make sure you cover the crate at night. There may be some sleepiness nights at first but the crate and covering it will work best for and him. Dee and Betty
We love dogs and sailed with our 60lb Lab, Gracie, until she became too old to get around the boat in comfort. Some considerations - you'll need to vacuum twice a day or face a potential clogged bilge pump at the worst possible moment. You'll also want to get something to protect your cabin sole from his claws. We used yoga mats and rug runners in the high traffic areas. Good Luck!
The poodle side of Oso should make him an excellent water dog; easily adaptable to swimming and loves to do it. That terrier side of him may make him a little rambunctious so he may unintentionally end up in the water more often than you expect. Looks like you got one smart, capable dog in Oso! Congratulations. Love each other well, all of you.
Gorgeous puppy, and such a wonderful addition to your yacht. However, a huge mistake for Pacific sailing, especially NZ & Oz, many marine parks don't allow dogs, horrendous quarantine, costs, shots, etc, good luck, you're much braver than me. I want a dog so much but there's so many places I couldn't go here in Oz so will wait for the time I can do the right thing by the dog.
What a great addition for you guys. We had a dog named Oso too! Pentimento definition: a reappearance in a painting of an original drawn or painted element which was eventually painted over by the artist.
Getting a pet is a bad idea when your traveling the world. Just check out sailing Nanji and their dog problems. It's costing them $10,000 dollars to get it back home to australia. They listed off all the countries you CANNOT GO too, lots of the pacific and well Aus too and most of the indian ocean countries don't allow as well. Really think hard about this, and be prepared to leave it with someone else when you cannot take it to the next country. CHEERS Steve h.
Hey you two......Don the dog loving sailor here....greetings from Vancouver Island, BC....love the new addition to your life and I’m quite impressed at how quickly he’s learned the « ropes » so to speak. You two are going to love that puppy and he is going love you as well. I would not have done it but you two are great people who will provide him with a good life.
I know I am supposed to love pets. But it is hard to watch channels with pets since i can’t help to think about the things not shown. Pee , poop, hair and general smell of an animal. - and all that on a confined space.
Nothing like living in a tiny space where everything smells like dog & hair everywhere. GIANT maintenance issue, scratched decks, furniture, travel issues, etc. I love dogs BUT NOT on a small cruising boat.
Awwwww.....such a cute little dude.....you made the absolutely right choice....perfect addition to your boat...and he will love Maine when you get here....it is our home and we have been sailing the coastline for over 16 years.
Congratulations with your new roommate. What a nice dog. And he is already getting used to you and life on the boat. Very nice to follow this new family member in his development. 🤗😉
Awwwwwwww so cute. So happy for you THREE....Funny Jordan keeps calling him Buddy because he looks right now like our little dog who we named Buddy. Enjoy the love that only a puppy can bring us. Puppy love. Nothing like it.
We like dogs and we don't like people who don't like dogs. We have two that live aboard and in spite of the extra work would never give them up. You will have joy every day, well done!
Well that was wholesome! Sadly I'm getting close to having to say goodbye to my 15 year old girl, Lucy....a beagle/pitbull. Absolute sweetheart. Watching this got me all choked up thinking about my first days/weeks with her....that fat puppy belly, puppy breath, the non stop cuteness. They bring so much joy...but dang is it tough when they reach the end. I'll enjoy watching Oso grow into a real salty dog! Congratulations!
We cruised with a cocker/poodle mix throughout the US, Caribbean and Mexico - never an issue. The addition of a “third” crew member was a welcome distraction! We used the same grass pad as you. We did add a whelping pad underneath the grass (Amazon). This soaked up the pee so it didn’t slosh around and could be easily rinsed out and dried while the 2nd one was in place. Never a problem with smells. Enjoy your trip north!
You: We are working to make this boat ready to sail around the world. Also you: Lets compound the stress with a barking shit machine. I did the same thing, no regrets. Puppers are wonderful.

Ticking alarm clock worked for our pup.

guess they will have to be careful when they visit Korea 😎🤤😆
Wow. You guys are going to be great parents. You need to make many little dudes, the world needs more people like you.
After watching sailing nandji i wouldn't personally have a pup on board, you have to ship them and leave them in quarantine for months sometimes, my heart would break
Depends on where you go but yes certainly adds a whole new difficulty
You can take a dog that size anywhere if you are determined to, and if not you make choices/plan in a way where you don’t have to leave the dog. You can choose to not stop at places and countries that do not allow dogs. This is totally doable
Yeah, I also thought of sailing nandji when I saw this video. Moving country to country with a dog is super tough and unfortunately it is the dog who gets left behind.
I see a lot of problems ahead, with the new puppy and problems he will cause between the crew
@@wordupninja And get in serious trouble if not done legally.
🐶🐶 Sailing dogs are the best! We're super happy for you guys!
should be called BUDDY as that's how you call him. love the dive in instinct, buddy will be fine.
Big Congrats! Osso is spectacular. A puppy is almost always a good idea. Let this be your new mantra... "it's his world; we're just here to serve."
2:18 that other dog checking you all out is hilarious
😆
God Bless you and take care of your dog. The best friend you can ever have.
I love dogs, but not on a world cruiser. Enjoy, he’ll be your new best friend!
Adorable pup, and so smart already. You lucked out, the new Captain will be a great addition. Great video!
Perfect again. Thanks for the adventure. Be safe and have fun. Also not a mistake,
Our pup looks just like yours...
Good luck
I can feel the love throughout the video...and can imagine it multiply when the new addition(s) to the family arrive. Aloha!
Captain Osso made my day ,have 2 cairn terriers who love sailing and now watch Osso
You guys are great to watch. You can make watching paint dry enjoyable. Go lil dude!
You just doubled your paperwork while traveling to other countries! Some countries will not allow the dog off the boat when you dock!
they can't even get out of the harbor........lol
Bloody hell! Reading some of these comments makes it seem that Americans are more soppy about dogs than the British! Dog on a, relatively, small boat? Madness! Totally unfair on the poor bloody animal. However, it would seem that the question, asked in the post, is redundant - the dog is on board. I wish you, and the dog, all the best. For all those who disagree, the question was asked, I gave my honest answer.
Great choice of the pup, you're all sure to enjoy life with him just that little bit better. Love your work. Stay Well, stay Safe. God Bless.
Some sailors use a designated coil of line for their dog to do his business on. Dragging it off the stern for a few miles cleans it right up.
Good idea I might try ! Sas goinfre to go for artificial grass….. Checked, itwork ‘s great on a balcony , soaking it behind the boat was also the idear
I thought I was obsessed with your channel before but no, it gets better and better! Can’t wait to see your new adventures with Oso!!!!
If crate training the ‘lil’dude’ it is a must to take them from the crate straight out to where they are meant to eliminate and then praise like crazy when they do.
Cute puppy!! I drive an 18 wheeler around the country with my 70 lb German shorthair pointer, cant imagine life without him.
I am crying happy tears for you guys, this is so sweet! You’re doing everything right, introducing new experiences and making them happy and making sure he’s comfortable. I have two 15 year olds aboard and they are my world, one of them is an Oso as well :)) cheers to boat dogs living their best lives!
You all look so happy❣️ What a lucky dog Oso is to find you two. Congratulations 🐾
Good Luck!
Good points!
Poodle mix breeds don't shed. Labs shed a lot! I've had both.
@@spray3716 what you mean to say is poodle mix breeds shed less. There is no such thing as a dog that doesn’t shed.
I really dig your all's vibe and energy! I love your videos, and the dog was a great addition to the Atticus family. Much love to you both. :)
Congrats on the new fur baby he's adorable and the boat is stellar.
Quote of the video: "Okay, I've got to get this poop to the lab." Just drop that in from time to time as a transition statement, hilarious!
ok. only the cutest blooming thing on the planet. loving sharing the journey with you.
This is the response i was hoping not to see (as i really want to travel with a dog) but kinda expected. Thankyou
Getting your first dog is a moment of pure joy. I think we can all tell that Desiree is going to be a natural tireless mother.
Some countries allow you to take your pets. Some you have to quarantine them. Some don't allow them at all.
Love the new family addition. He is so cute. Thanks for sharing.😎
The BEST Idea!!!! Congrats you guys I hope Jetty gets to meet him! :-)
Ooooo! I hope so too!!
Hey you two......Don the dog loving sailor here....greetings from Vancouver Island, BC....love the new addition to your life and I’m quite impressed at how quickly he’s learned the « ropes » so to speak. Quite a challenge to get my Australian Shepherd to void on the boat....she never took to it...so well done!
Good call Jordan. That puppy bought you at 2 year delay on the baby
Lmao
You two are going to love that puppy and he is going love you as well. I would not have done it but you two are great people who will provide him with a good life.
I know I am supposed to love pets. But it is hard to watch channels with pets since i can’t help to think about the things not shown. Pee , poop, hair and general smell of an animal. - and all that on a confined space.
Nothing like living in a tiny space where everything smells like dog & hair everywhere. GIANT maintenance issue, scratched decks, furniture, travel issues, etc. I love dogs BUT NOT on a small cruising boat.
Congrats to your addition to the Atticus II Crew. You guys ever go north from CT to MA and beers are on me. Fair winds and following seas Atticus !!.
Good training for having a child. Get plenty of puppy pads. They gotta go somewhere. Hide your shoes and other chewy stuff 🤓
Beautiful classic blue water cruising sailboat ⛵️! 😘⛵️🐕😀Mike from Missouri
I guess Australia is out of the question.
Awwwww.....such a cute little dude.....you made the absolutely right choice....perfect addition to your boat...and he will love Maine when you get here....it is our home and we have been sailing the coastline for over 16 years.
So many bad memories of the sound of a barking dog drifting across a once quiet anchorage…all night long.
Congratulations with your new roommate. What a nice dog. And he is already getting used to you and life on the boat.
Very nice to follow this new family member in his development. 🤗😉
They peed on the dude’s rug!
Man, that rug really tied the boat together.
Awwwwwwww so cute. So happy for you THREE....Funny Jordan keeps calling him Buddy because he looks right now like our little dog who we named Buddy. Enjoy the love that only a puppy can bring us. Puppy love. Nothing like it.
Love Captain Oso, he is so cute!! Try classical music to soothe him. We have a tibetan terrier who is so chilled once we put the music on 🐶
We like dogs and we don't like people who don't like dogs. We have two that live aboard and in spite of the extra work would never give them up. You will have joy every day, well done!
Test baby! ;)
You wont be crossing the Pacific with a dog on board. If that was on your mind. Cute dog
My heart is melting !! ❤️ so happy for you ! What a sweet Salty Dog Captain Oso will be lol! You’re such lovely pup parents , so awesome 👏
