  • After wrapping up a handful of pre-departure projects, we are FINALLY ready to set sail to Derecktor Robinhood Marina in Maine which will be our home base for the summer while we continue to upgrade and outfit Atticus II for extensive offshore voyaging. As we cast the lines and set sail, we are engulfed in heavy fog, and have a couple of close encounters…!

    You need a harness for the pup, not the collar leash. Makes it easier to carry(hand bag style) not to mention grabbing if he goes overboard. A little life vest for the early days on the boat might be a good idea as well.

    • @scyz2807
      @scyz2807 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      He actually does have a harness on if you look closely. Also, they show him with a life vest on in the video where they get him. So there is one available.

      Was just noting the same thing. I’ve had dogs aboard for 20 years and really recommend a harness with a decent handle on the back and never a collar. He is such a pup I would have a PFD on him , not just running around. They can be in the water in a flash. When he is older and wiser maybe ok on dock without pfd, but always one on when under way and he is on deck. In rough weather, downstairs they go.

      I have seen many boats put netting around the entire perimeter of the boat too when they have dogs.

    Jordan & Deserie-
    Consider replumbing the water tank vent to overboard vs dumping in anchor locker. Preferable within eyesight of tank fill so you know when your full. Could come in handy if your paying for water so you dont waste any.
    Eye Splice the bitter end vs bowline? Love the mousing the shackle but what about a swivel?
    With Captain Oso you might consider "netting" the lifelines so the little guy dosent fall over board. That happen to me, fortunately the dog had a big tail and as he wagged is tail it was like a big windshield wiper and we were able to spot him as he diffted with the tide. We didn't notice him gone until he was over 300 yards away. Little Captain Oso would be tough to see at a distance. The netting will come in handy if you add a a kid on board
    Love you guys , keep on keeping on!
    John

    I am so with you on attaching the wrong end. It's the kind of stuff we all do......monthly. If you are boating regularly, your focus is laser on the bigger things and bigger details which makes us occasionally skip right over what seems the obvious. That sailboat is just so pretty under sail. Congratulations.

    Really great episode you two…I like how you always show the “mess-ups” too - we all do them. The shot of the lighthouse with your boat in the distance was great. IDK, maybe the content, maybe the cinematography or maybe both, but I really felt like this episode was a step up in production quality. Glad the marina worked out - good sailing.

    Great video. One quick thought. You may already know this, but - - peanut butter is great as a motivator, attention diverter, reward for dogs, but make sure the PB you select DOES NOT contain Xylitol. It is toxic for dogs.

    Soooooo excited you are finally heading North. The farther north you go, the more extraordinary the coastline becomes. It takes a while to feel (moderately) comfortable sailing in the fog but you will catch on.
    Thank you for taking us along on your Maine adventure.

    I sailed the coast of Maine in summers for several years.. No radar, no GPS, just paper charts, Loran & dead reckoning. You shouldn't have any concerns with all the nav gear you have. The fog along the coast can be very dense, you will get used to it. Make sure you have a good fog horn. I once ran up very close to an aircraft carrier in the fog. I was alerted because he was constantly signaling with his fog horn. You must pay close attention to the tides in Maine. They can be 10-15ft and more, and tidal currents can be very strong.
    You will get thunder storms, but usually you have lots of time to duck into protected waters. You won't lack for great cruising destinations along the entire coast. If you haven't already, get a good cruisers guide to help identify out of the way places. Good luck and fair winds.

    You will hit a lot of fog in Maine. Also when you are in Maine and you see two lobster pot floats close together (like 20 ft.) DO NOT SAIL BETWEEN THEM...they are for one pot and there is a line connecting the two floats.

    Man, everything looks really good. Your sailboat looked great in that last part of the video. I know ya'll asked earlier about the color of the boat being green and I really like it. I would keep it green. Very thankful you found a marina to get all your projects completed. Both of you look very happy and content and I'm so glad everything is coming together for the next stage of your lives!!

    As happy as I am to see you back on the water, I'm sorry to see you leaving my home port of Branford. I am at Bruce and Johnson's, and loved seeing Atticus there. I came by a few times to say hello, but you were either away or below. In my humble yet correct opinion, you are the best sailing channel on line: a great combo of adventure, travelogue, DIY and fun. I know you will love Maine: it's just about perfect there this time of year. And have others have said, watch out for the lobster pots.

    just want to add to the comments about your Epurb being outside. A released Epurb inside a vessel but trapped below the surface will have a significantly degraded (more likely totaly degraded) signal. Just mount it out of the way to prevent accidental deployment and It will be much safer.

    Your departure brought back such memorie3s of my sailing in the Chesapeake. Waking up at dawn, seeing the light morning fog burn away to reveal fields with maybe cows or horses, noting how the wind starts to pick up and timing it all so after that moment of pulling anchor the sails were set and drawing.
    New England is a mystical place and I know we all will enjoy your explorations.

    Great creative cinematography. So you visual see through ground fox that theres something out there like a marker on your starboard beam but its not showing up on the Radar., then we see the masts of a sail boat emerging out the fog. Reason. Small fiberglass boats with rounded lines and little metal may not create a decent radar reflection. It's why you see a radar reflector hoisted high up now and then on sail boat mast. It also helps in low

  • @jameshoiby
    @jameshoiby 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    For the anchor line, look into a piece of climbing gear called a "SCREAMER" to put at the end and absorb shock. It has a series of bar tacks that rip out when someone takes a long fall and they absorb the shock, brining you to a stop more gently than a bare rope would. There may be a nautical equivalent I'm not aware of.

    • @two-sense
      @two-sense 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just as good would be 40 or 50 feet of that three strand. Would give enough to attach a buoy with a camel hitch to recover the ground tackle after cutting it free in an emergency.

    Hi Buds, great choice in Marina in Maine. Well protected also close by boat to Boothbay Harbor via Townsend gut. You could do that trip in the dinghy. Townsend gut into Boothbay is pretty cool! Narrow steep channel by the swing bridge. The advice on the lobster pots is good. Also watch the current and tide going into the marina. It runs pretty good! We had fog last time we were in there. We stayed overnight and had a real nice meal at the restaurant. Make sure you have bug spray especially at dusk and early morning. Lots to do on a day sail from where you are. Seguin Island lighthouse, dock and dine lots of places (you may need reservations). We are coming into full on summer season. Everything up here seems to be open without Covid restrictions. We are over in John's Bay between South Bristol and New Harbor. We will keep an eye out for you. We stumbled on to Delos last year totally by accident in Port Clyde. We had no idea they were in the area. I am the guy that suggested Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol. If you see a 36ft blue hull downeast power boat with a canvas top "Hallelujah" that is us. Or 22 ft blue Pearson Ensign 1106 day sailor in John's Bay. Enjoy Maine in the summer. We think it is a special place.

When my pup got hurt once on board I found my human first aid kit really didn’t work. Head to a pet store and see if you can pick one up before cruising. You don’t want to be out there without one. I would also recommend doing a short video on what the differences are. You will get a lot of people watching it for sure. Good luck you guys!

    I've been watching since you first started looking for a sailboat, Love you videos, great editing. I was amazed several weeks ago when you got a new puppy. I showed my wife your video when you introduced your baby and we remarked how he looks just like our baby "Bella". I am a hot air balloon pilot and was attending an event 800 miles away outside Denver when our sitter called and said that Bella was acting strange. Long story short our Vet was able to keep her alive while we rushed home to be with her in her final moments. Now as I catch up on your videos it brings aa tear to my eyes when I see your beautifully cute baby. Thanks for all your hard work keeping us entertained just don't forget to feature your new baby at least once a week.

    That shot from the lighthouse out to atticus was amazing. 😳 cinematic. Sailing in the fog whoa thank you for that experience. Awesome video.

    The new and fabulous journey is starting, after a slow and tedious refurbishing, all well done. She sails so beautifully; couldn't be happier for you and your new crew.

    Thank you for the excitement we have all felt in preparing this new AtticusII. I just wish I didn't get seasick watching waves from the shore...oh and be at least 40 years younger. I wish you great times and I will continue following your adventures until.......

    I have travelled those waters for years and I have seen 2 subs out of Groton in all my ventures. You guys see one on your first and likely only passage. That is luck!; and hopefully a positive omen for good fortune in your future travels.

    (Viewers) You don’t get it. They are sharing their “living dream” with us.
    I am thankful for every one of their videos. They are all like getting fresh air and a cool sea breeze. I love the wholesomeness of both loving adults their puppy and their living. God bless the freedom of these souls. God protect them and keep them safe.
    I hope you are Christians enjoying the blessings and full of thankfulness for your gifts and the fruit of your hard work.
