Professor Sachs, you are truly number 1, and your knowledge is truly admirable, which is impeccably demonstrated in your concluding speech when you listed almost all the points concerning the problems the world faces today. However, I am a bit confused that, according to Jean Dong, there is seemingly a hint that China is the "trouble maker" today because China is the nation that needs to be "deterred" but the deterrence should be "competition without confrontation." Although I applaud most of her discussion points, especially the two perspectives on history and geography, I am just wondering why she didn't mention colonialism, imperialism, and US hegemony, which are considered the main causes of the world problem today. Maybe, I am wrong. I should read Professor Dong's book. 😀

You can write a book as you desire, say the points you like, but there would be no westerners read it except the ones already have the same view points. What good would such a book do?

    • @AngelaC622
      @AngelaC622 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

I agree. It’s the old and present colonial powers that need to be deterred. It’s good that Jean did point out the First Island Chain, but did not go on to explain how that is used by the UA and Allies to contain and threaten China psychologically and militarily.

We only need to look at the current state of the Olympics to see that America do not play by that rule at all. prof Dong, thank you for the insights but I feel that diplomacy about America can only go so far and we, Chinese although I am Malaysian Chinese, should have a firmer stand against America’s bullying tactics. Thank you Professor Sachs and Professor Dong.
The Taiwan issue is the last piece of colonialism and will be resolved in due course.
It is time that Western imperialism and colonialism finally come to an end. That’s why politicians in the West are hysterical and delusional and desperate to stop the rise of China. The so called “coming collapse of China”is, in reality, the coming collapse of imperialism and colonialism, or the collapse of global hegemony.
For the last 500 hundred years before the beginning of the collapse of colonialism in the 1950s, Europe had been colonizing the rest of the world, mainly for its endless resources and cheap labor to feed its own economic growth. The West had been fighting wars among themselves for colonies and control of raw materials and energy. Ever since the end of the WW2, independence movements across the globe had first set free countries in Asia, followed by Latín America, the Middle East and lastly Africa. The West is, now, no longer able to get free resources or labor or land, to support its dominance over developing countries, or the global South in general.
Under these circumstances, Europe, or the West including Japan, is losing its own economic independence; they are relying heavily or existentially on the support of the U.S. In the meantime, on the other hand, the global South with the cooperation among the BRICS COUNTRIES like China, Russia, Brazil, South Africa and so on, are focusing on their own economic growth and social development. The new world order is emerging with multipolarity and international democracy for shared prosperity. The West is feeling the heat and threat of its hegemonic collapse. That’s why they are following the marching order of the U.S., in its proxy war in Ukraine against Russia. The European countries have become totally dependent on the U.S. for its resources and strength. Without their old colonies, they submit themselves now completely to the hegemony of the U.S.
However, with the united front between China and Russia, the global south is awakening to a new world order. They see their hope and prosperity in China’s BRI as well as the strategies of the BRICKS. That’s why the West can not defeat Russia in Ukraine because it doesn’t have the unlimited resources it used to enjoy with their colonies gone foreverf.
The bottom line is how can the West or NATO expec to beat the united front between Russia and China in the long run without getting into a nuclear Armhcsageddon?!

Once again my knowledge of China and the dangerous response from the US government was greatly expanded by Prof. Sachs. Ms. Dong is brilliant and about as well versed in Chinese history as any leading scholar or diplomate alive today. In these times of brainless name calling and unprofessional childish behavior it is reassuring to know I can search Jeff Sachs and find a enlightening inspiring discussion filled with facts and truth and history. Very rare these days. Sadly.

The most important factor that helped both China and India to flourish was the vast river system that flowed down north and south slopes of the Himalayas. The Himalayas were the 3rd largest source of fresh water for both China and South Asia.
Up until the industrial revolution in Europe both China and India benefited from the high productivity of their fertile plains and river valleys. Post-colonial China picked up what she lost out during the period of industrial revolution in Europe. Kudos to China and her statecraft to bring China to a position from where she will soon emerge as the strongest Super Power in the world.
I hope, China will not behave like the U.S. by extending her statecraft to carry out regime changes in other nations.
And, I hope, China becomes a shining example of a benign and benevolent civilization.

@@TacticalMayo if you listen to Professor Jeffrey Sachs carefully, he was trying to correct her when he brought up Security Dilemma, that China's military buildup is in response to the U.S. hegemonic encirclement. Sachs has high praise for China and its many leaders. Another pro-China professor is former Singapore ambassador to the United Nation Ambassador Kishore Mahbubani. A third one is London School of Economics Professor Keyu Jin.

Thank you, Professor Sachs and Professor Dong for this very interesting discussion about Chinese Statecraft! While looking back 2,200 years is an interesting and important way to understand the Chinese history, I have to point out that history line was cut off in 1949 after the communist revolution, especially the Great Cultural Revolution in 1960s. That means since 1960s the Traditional Chinese Philosophy was gone completely. The current leadership did not have any formal education of that Tradition either. The Great Economical Reform started in late 1970s did not try to revive the Tradition. Therefore it would be a mistake to put the current Chinese Statecraft as the extension of the Traditional Chinese Culture.
In my opinion the idea of Competition without Confrontation in terms of dealing with the relationship between China and the West is very naive if not deceive. There is no way to make Capitalism and Communism co-exist without confrontation. But that doesn't mean to have wars between the two. Global Politics is all about interests of each party. Confrontations are inevitable.
The growing power of Chinese Navy is necessary for China to protect its growing sea trade routes. It's neither Offensive nor Defensive in terms of its territory integrity. Therefore I don't think it's appropriate use of both terms in the context of this discussion. The U.S. Government always uses "Nation Security" as the pretense to intervene internal affaires of sovereign countries. China should be allowed to do that too.

As a descent from Han founder, I keep watching how China progresses into contemporary global contention.
Statecraft, this is a pejorative word to illustrate the Chinese philosophy of statemanship having been refined for last 3500 years of history.
Han dynasty founded excellent imperial ruling system to consolidate firm imperialistic governance by mixed forms of governership and principalities. This system excels over the Roman patronage system, which remains in confliction of 32 statehoods.
Han succeeded in 15 major ethnicities unification. The refined Han script was the immediate tool among them.
Today, HAN dominent people is the intermix of those different tribal groups.

I like Professor Sachs's programme as it holistically articulates the subject that has been discussed.
The arrogance and the superiority of the white anglo saxon attitude were the cause of all the conflicts with the Chinese and other races worldwide, and that is the white privilege being indoctrinated to their people for the last four hundred years and the attempt to contain its colonies from advance and remain serfdom states. The sly Western media have exacerbated these discriminative rules, with scholars and politicians twisting the facts for their advantage. Without being indiscriminate, there is a small number of decent Westerners who have come out and told the truth. i,e, John Pilger, Kishore Mububani, Jeffery Sachs and other.
The Western's motto of democracy and freedom was simply a feigning strategy adopted to rule over their colonies, however, back in their home country they maintained their monarchy system.
This comment shows White Europeans dominate the world by colonialism and sedition of fake democracy freedom ideology to justify their occupation, such as claiming "Terra Nullius" which would declare the people on the land they invaded as sub-human.
The world would have no peace unless the White Westerners are prepared to share, and change their inherently belligerent cultures.

Excellent discussion of historical China & issues of current info-tech stage China. Now building on China's past departure from the seas, FUTURE China may include: cooperative expansion & utilization of above & deep sea resources. Wind & solar farms for salt water hydrogen energy grid above. Commodity mining below. Then repeat from low-earth orbit, upwards to GEO, lunar, solar system, etc. The key driving success factor is co-operative gains fairly shared. And so multipolar multilateral geo-poli cfg (multinodal), not coercive, not hegemonic. 📈

This being said, Ms Ding, would you consider publishing a book condensing in some 100 pages this essential information, sorely needed in our troubled work? Your analysis needs to reach many more readers. Would you agree?

I don't know about her book but the way she talked, I believe, her book is more in a defensive way and possible her mind more likely westernized. I wouldn't buy her book anyway. It's fully understandable when Chinese students go to West study and once they have opportunity to stay permanent (Australia) then start fearing, to be aggressively defended to her own mother land. In short, the way she talk is half and half, talk too much but not the point, too ideal in term of competition.

Of course China has to respond to US aggression: the build-up of US military bases with ballistic missiles surrounding China - the first, second and third island chains; the interference in Taiwan with armaments, sedition and threats towards China; the egregious propaganda war against China’s peaceful rise; the plots and ganging up as seen with Five Eyes, the Quad, Aukus; military alliances such as with the Philippines; and the ridiculous plots to install NATO into the “Indo-Pacific. China learnt how its weakness during the previous two centuries before unification resulted in its utter humiliation and devastation from brutal colonialism and invasion. The unspeakable cruelties suffered has taught China and the Chinese people never to be weak again, at all cost. We too say, “Never again”.
