  • Shortly after Boxflyer and I finished filming the 20000Km service on the Wethead RT, a K13GT rolled in for a similar service. This is involved, but there is no great mechanical skill needed. You will need the Service DVD, a decent torque wrench, a vacuum coolant filler, and a few special tools from BMW. Even after buying all these tools, you will probably still save money over paying someone else to do the job.
    There are a few points to be cautious of.
    1) make sure the cam chain retro-fit has been done on your K13. This is truly an ounce of prevention to avoid a ton of cure.
    2) Don't avoid buying (or making) special tools for the job that you will see in this video. They work, and work well.
    Most of this video surrounds the valve clearance checks. Some of the special tools you will need ONLY if your clearance is off. I would avoid actually acquiring them unless you need to make the adjustments-- for that reason, i would suggest you undertake this service when you know that you are done riding for the season, as the special tools can take a LONG time to arrive. From my experience , the K13 rarely needs adjustments-- so, again, hold off buying the tools unless you know for sure yours are off.
    As mentioned in the intro, I don't show all the components of the service as they are simple and strait forward (oil change, for example).
    As far as time allotted to do this service, front to back, it will take you a full day at a normal pace. If you actually need to adjust the valves, add an evening to that.

    Well done! I miss working in your warm garage too. I appreciate your insite from the racing world about the brake reservoir service. Glad you showed the proper use of the coolant flush and air purge tool to get rid of those pesky trapped air pockets that can cause localized overheating. I'm glued to your channel...!

    I have the 1300s but I believe the only difference is the upper parts of the bikes, & the engines are the same. Great to see the inner workings. Great detail. Thx

    That's not the ECU on the right side, it's the ZKE chassis electronics control module. The ECU is under the seat. I'd a thought someone would notice, but since no one did...

    I've been watching videos on how to remove the fairings from all the sport-tourers and this bike surprisingly may be the easiest. It didn't look like you had to unplug any electronics either which means you could ride the bike without the fairing if you needed to.

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert Brandywine technically there is one thing to unplug and that is the thermometer sending unit attached to the shroud. However, if you keep the shroud on then you are correct. Your general statement of it being the easiest is bang on.

      @@robertbrandywine i believe it is referred to as the "inner fairing" in the manual, but its simply the black plastic component that wraps around the radiator and directs fresh air into it

    When you put the rocker cover back on you need to make sure the right angles (inside and outside0in the gasket are clean and a fresh dab of High temp RTV (O2 sensor safe) to seal these corners created by the need to go around some objects on the left side of the engine.

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually-- you are incorrect. BMW advises against applying sealant to the "valve cover" as it tends to cause leaks in the dry parts and will damage the rubber gasket upon subsequent removals. And after 15000 km, the engine is sealed just fine, just like it did for the 40000km before without sealant. Word of advice-- follow the manual.

    Awesome video guy! Would you recommend to anyone to take the front wheel off to add work clearance and to check and service the brakes anyway? Mine has just under 48k and I'm considering replacing the hoses. What are your thoughts on that as well. Again, thank you for your great video sir.

    Well done but you should have pulled the cam cap to actually show the job, since you went all the way into the engine. You wouldn’t need to replace a shim but you could have shown the steps and process for pulling / replacing a shim. That being said, it is really a waste of time to open the valve cover and measure the shim tolerance. K bike shim tolerances just don’t change unless you run the engine on old or low oil. Something needs to go wrong for them to wear enough to change. R bikes are a different story.

  • @davidmcmillan8408

    Great video. Just one question - you said to measure valve clearances of cylinders 1 and 4 together, and cylinders 2 and 3 together. When number one is at top dead centre on the compression/ignition stroke, number four is at TDC on the exhaust/induction stroke. Does this matter re checking no four? If the cam lobes give some valve overlap - and I'm not sure if there is valve overlap or not on this or my K1300S engine - won't that mean that on cylinder 4, both inlet and exhaust cams might still be slightly engaged in lifting their valves, and thus not in the right 'off cam' place for measuring?

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question -- you are correct .although the pistons will be in the same position, (1 and 4, for example) you will need to spin the crank again 360 after checking #1. That being said, focus on making sure the lobes are turned away from the followers is key.

    • @davidmcmillan8408

      @@kiki231000 Thanks for your rapid response Chris. It was really an academic question as I don't have anything like your abilities with a wrench, and I'm relying on my tech who used to work on the London police K bikes - he told me he'd never had to change a shim on their 'flying brick' engines despite astronomical mileages, and says the slant Ks are even better in this regard. I love my K1300S - there really is nothing out there to replace it - but am starting to be concerned re it being an obsolete model for over seven years now, and the potential difficulty of sourcing spares. Thanks again from a frosty England.

    Good video. I had to remove the head and do similar work on my K12S after a lady tipped over my bike at the grocery store causing the throttle to stick. When I started the bike I busted up the valves. Anyway the retro fit and tool for the crank sensor is important cause without it will get damaged. Believe me I know, I had to take it to the shop just for that. Mechanically everything was fine with no binding with the head installed after a machine shop seated new valves. But BMW doesn't provide can bus electrical wiring information so I couldn't figure out the crank sensor issue. I'm planning to check clearance on my K13S clearance but I was wondering why they have to have bearing on the studs that go in the spark plug holes. Can I just use regular studs? Maybe I shouldn't be asking this considering my past experience

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regarding the thrust bearing on the tool. This makes it much easier as you are compressing the cover down on to the head, as opposed to simply holding 2 pieces together

    Hello - As usual great video - very educational and relaxing to watch. I don't know whether I will ever own a BMW bike but I do own the next best thing -a 2002 e46 330Cic. Teaching myself to work on that. I'm slowly adding to my tools so I'm curious, what brand torque wrench is that you use?

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the E46-- beautiful car. We are BMW faithful, and although I drive a 5 Series (F and G) , the 3 E was my favorite. As far as tools go, I have had nothing but the best luck with Snap - On. They are very expensive (to me) , but they stand behind their products. Over the years the bargain tools have failed me at the most critical time, so i save my pennies and buy better quality now for my core box. So all my ratchets are Snap on-- since i use them every day. All my screwdrivers are snap on, since they do a better job of dripping the fastener. Slowly i am replacing my sockets, and pliers. And for the accuracy tools like the torque wrenches, i also save up and buy their products. In this video, i am using a Snap-On Tech Angle 3/8 drive (ATECH2F100VO). This wrench has repeatable accuracy to 2%, but critical for the Euro engines is the angular velocity feature ("techangle" ) -- you tighten to torque, then apply a specific rotation by angle. Some aspects of the engine assembly will require this feature. The wrench has both metric and Empirical units , memory function, led , audio, and tactile alarm. I was so pleased with it over the past 3 years that i bought a 1/4" version for the tiny stuff. I dont use it for the bigger less critical components, just the engine and finer work.

      it was user Boxflyer that came up with the brilliant idea of the "Boxflyer boards". We printed off the panel diagrams from the service DVD, and then using 3M 77 Adhesive we attached them to foam art boards from our local dollar store.
