    I've owned this bike for 10 years now. It is without doubt the best touring bike ever made. I did take it on the track for a day. I got nobbles on the tyre edges and brake fade on the last laps of the day. Yes I boiled the brake fluid and cooked the tyres. At the start of the session the other track users laughed and smiled at me. But by the end of the day I got the nod of respect. It wasn't the fastest bike on the track but we overtook plenty and witnessed riders trying so hard, they came off. The bike's technology has taken care of me and kept me upright. THE best advise I can give to any K1300Gt owner, is don't cheap out on the tyres. I use Metzler M7RR front and rear. The bike eats tyres anyway. The acceleration is astonishing and I need totally trust these tyres on hard bends too.

      He is 100% correct about the tires. The last pair I had were pilot fives by Michelin and they seemed pretty good but whatever people say is the best whatever you feel is the best for your style is correct but do not cheap out.

    The new 1600 is so nice but the sad thing is that many of those stories we've heard about BMW not being reliable are true, so I can't see spending all that money on a bike I can't trust to take me across the country. I just don't understand why BMW can't build a more reliable product, the cars and bikes of theirs that I have seen first hand, were constantly going back to the dealer for things to be fixed, usually small stuff but sometimes major transmission things would take them down. They ride so nice, but that reliability problem is just too great of a worry if I want to travel several thousand miles on a trip.

      Maybe buy an older K-bike with the longitudinal 4.. I have a 98 and a 2003, all they need and like is oil, gas, tires and brakes, and lots of riding! Cheers! Maybe that's what's wrong, people don't take care of them properly.. nor ride them enough. I hear the oil/air heads are quite dependable as well! Best bike ever BMW! Ride safe all! : -)

    Great video Shawn. Normally I'm not a BMW fan, but more because of the boxer engines they usually come with. They might be reliable and smooth but I've always loved and will always choose a inline 4 over anything else.

      Hello mate. I am curently trying to decide if i buy a r1200rt or a k1200gt. Im leaning for the gt. You sayed you are a 10 year owner of this bike. What major problems did you have? Does it fall in to bmw "mith" of very poor realiability?

    • @krzychaczu
      @krzychaczu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SAB-iq1kp I bought it 2yo with extended warranty from BMW. It was about 20k km. During the first year I've had to (1) replace the clutch, which was covered by BMW. I guess that the previous owner was pushing this bike hard, cuz now it is 55k and still fine. BMW say that by design it does not get much oil so it can wear quicker if someone does a lot of stop&go. I take it for tours. It is not a city bike.
      (2) The ESA - also covered by BMW. I used to change it between 1 pers / 2 pers during the ride (sometimes solo, sometimes with wife) because it is possible, but I noticed that it raises and lowers the bike, so maybe some bumps on the road while switching helped to break it. So i change this only when fully stopped now. Characteristics (comfort, normal, sport) I change during the ride without any problems. Also early days, it was showing me still 10-20km till the end of fuel... so it was a challenge to push it out of the tunnel. They have changed or reprogrammed the sensor so it does not surprise me.
      Touch the wood I did not have any issues for 25-30k km now and I still love it. It's a keeper for me and I find it the best touring bike out there.
      Personally, I wouldn't go for RT because of much less power/dynamics and the boxer engine vibrations which I don't like. But if it was riding more in the city than touring... I would buy Ducati Monster for the city, and K1200GT for touring :-)

If you've got the $$$ for maint and follow thru with that maint, great, buy the latest model, low milage, K1300GT with the best tires out there, but be prepared for boredom on the straights because you just can't fly unhindered. 65-75 on this bike is boring for thousands of miles. I have one of these bikes, what makes it so great is also what can bite you in the arse. All those electronic gadgets start failing around the 10 year mark and they are not cheap to replace or fix. Right now I have a faulty oil sensor that needs replacing and the front and rear tyre pressure sensors have flat batteries. So I have 2 alarms going off on my screen and I just ignore them. I will give the K1300GT this, it has insane power for a touring bike and is very comfortable. I have done 980km one day rides with zero issues when it comes to comfort. The bike is also very good through the turns as well, it is the type of bike that prefers to go fast through the turns and laughs at your slow pathetic attempts to corner.

  • @charlesfoster141
    @charlesfoster141 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    INFO FOR MOTORCYCLE JUMPERS: No one should try this without the motorcycle being prepared exactly perfect. That is the key. The engine is built by someone really, really good. The piston has properly been lapped to the valve guides so that the rings do not stick to the cam chain. The clearance is very important in this step. If you get the gap in that lap too big slippage will occur between the pump and the ring gear which would throw everything off once you leave the ramp. If that gap is wrong there is no use worrying about the chassis. The chassis was prepared way in advance anyway so that the bike could perform a jump to remember. Every single component was bent and reshaped until the right cantelever was achieved in each part, especially where the shocks attach. And the fork is an entirely different matter where a specialist is required to dial the spokes into "true" tune between the hub and ratio of each gear. Don't worry about the brakes as long as they are not grabbing sloppy. As long as the brake cable extends all the way in it will stop. The drive train is crucial. Without the correct manufacturers recommended grease paste pressed into the embedded cross frame, that machine is not sailing anywhere in a head wind. If there is too much head win it is best to take off in first gear only, use the clutch to shift quickly though the gears after the take off once the hump is cleared. Do not look down while flying. Concentrate on the duty to control the throttle during the flight. Too much torque can veer you sideways and too crooked to land. If your take off is short you might not make it. The landing might cause pain. To avoid too much pain you must tumble on top of the air for as long as possible resisting the urge to catch yourself on top of the motorcycle. Remember that motorcycles are very cheap compared to the ambulance and hospital. Most surgeons hate motorcycle jumpers anyway so do not make mistakes that require their practice. Let those MD professionals practice on somebody else. This is the reason foremost to follow these preparation steps to the letter. If for any reason that you do not think the bike is balanced at the Apex of the perimeter of both axles than DO NOT MAKE THE JUMP! It may not end pretty. Beware and be careful and safe at all cost. In fact it is best just to forget it and watch someone else.

    My moms and step dads harleys are and have sat up in garage for over 3 years now.. I think hers is a 883 sport but not beefy like the iron im not too for sure what model Harley but I do know it is a sportester with a very very custom paint job like one I've never seen before very cool. His bike is a 07 night train with a chip and screaming egales kit on it with a compelte custom design windshield kinda tall glass but is engraved with moutians birds wolves and all kinda stuff on em but I absolutely hate that they let go to rot but he works in the middle east in oil fild and me and here live here in louisiana lol but shes been too sick for the past few years to ride
