    Just discovered your channel. Your quite a character. I can tell you have a deep appreciation for music, and you could not have chosen a better band. As a fan, I to have my Yes story. Quintessential lineup, in the round. However, and I have not read all the suggestions put forward, but Tales of a Topographic Ocean is by far Yes s most epic and divergent piece. Hope you continue to enjoy your journey of discovery. Don't ever change.

    This is probably my favorite Yes song, though that's such a hard thing to pick. There are loads of great songs and since you want suggestions......Starship Trooper, Yours is No Disgrace, Roundabout, South Side of the Sky, Heart of the Sunrise, Wonderous Stories, Going for the One, Turn of the Century and Awaken. Gates of Delirium is a great song and you should listen to it but as some others have said it might be best to listen to some other stuff first, otherwise it might overwhelm you (Awaken is the same way). I think to fully appreciate them you need that base. I definitely prefer that you do them like this, pauses are OK but I don't like the cuts. :-)
    I loved your CTTE reaction, that was awesome. I've been a Yes fan since somewhere around 1975 and IMO they are amazing.

  • @ZealZaddy
    @ZealZaddy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Welcome back. I'm surprised you didn't comment much on the rockin’ nature of this song. This song is the most straight-forward rock ‘n’ roll on CTTE. Steve Howe gets to really burn the bridge on his guitar, Chris Squire is thumping and driving hard, and Wakeman pulls back a bit to let them shine. That's especially noticeable after the softer acoustic side of Yes coming from the previous song on the album. You're right in self-criticizing yourself for needing more descriptive words, but your face sometimes shows what your words aren’t getting across.

    As a life long Yes fan - I bought CTTE and Yessongs in 1973 shortly after they got released and they are still in my main musical rotation today - may I suggest BEFORE proceeding to Relayer , consider going back one album to Fragile - 3 songs to check out : Roundabout , Heart of the Sunrise and South Side of the Sky . Each one is very 'digestible' - approx, 7 or 8 minutes each and should help you build your foundational understanding of Yes before going to Relayer , Tales of Topographic Oceans etc

      I strongly agree dude, you are in for a big ride and I am very proud of you for undertaking that adventure! I can definitely understand the feeling of being overwhelmed and, back in the day when I discovered Yes, it took me a while to really take in what the music had to offer. So yeah, Fragile, Yes Album stuff are great choices to get a feel of the band. All those 20 min songs take a few listens to even start to connect the pieces. Anyway, have fun man :)

    Yes makes music meant to get lost within.
    Just sit back, let go, and let them guide you to those deep, distant, delightful places where mind and music meld.

  • @souldreamer9056
    @souldreamer9056 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Being lost because so much is going on is to be expected with SK. I think of it as “Yes’ C.V. song”: A vehicle for them to cram their entire arsenal into a 10 minute song, ie vocal harmonies, odd meters, virtuoso musicianship, profound-sounding non-sensical fantasy lyrics, the sense of “each musician simultaneously playing the lead”, multiple instrument changes*, varied dynamics (slow, fast, loud, quiet), beauty, dissonance, ... it’s all there in one song.
    While all this is overwhelming at first listen, the flip side is it rewards you and pays generous dividends of enjoyment over time.
    *The instrument changes: Howe switches between 3 guitars: electric, steel and sitar; Wakeman switches between mellotron, moog, harpsichord.

    • @Azabaxe80

      Funny, I've never thought of Khatru as Yes' "CV song". Normally I give that title to Roundabout.

    • @Chadner
      @Chadner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Azabaxe80 me too, but I guess it makes sense. To me Roundabout sounds dated in comparison to SK which has a more polished 'timeless' vibe to it, if not futuristic. I don't know why but now it makes total sense to me that it would be the C.V. song, whatever that is supposed to mean. Heart of The Sunrise might be an even better pick tho

    • @souldreamer9056
      @souldreamer9056 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, “CV Song” is a term I just made up to describe how I thought about the song. “Showcase song” might have been a better term. I think it showcases all the strengths of Yes better than any other Yes song does. I find it has more sophistication and attention to detail than roundabout and the composition is more focused and cohesive than HOTS, even though those two are both awesome songs.

    • @Chadner
      @Chadner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@souldreamer9056 Good points. I think SK is an amazing all-out instrumental extravaganza that can definitely work as a showcase of the sheer talent the band had. But after listening again yesterday (thru this video) and thinking about this concept it made me realize that the song might lack some 'soul', or a narrative cohesiveness that can be felt more clearly in HOTS. Like imo, Yes wasnt just about the talent, but how that talent came together to construct unbelievable worlds that you could just immerse yourself. So by that definition, SK feels like a shopping mall of talent being showcased while things like HOTS take you inside a new magical world. Making it a better showcase for what the band could ultimately achieve.

    • @souldreamer9056
      @souldreamer9056 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chadner Good point. While SK a “technical workout” showcase, it has less of the “soul” that other top tier Yes songs have, like HOTS, &U&I, Awaken or Don’t Go.

    You made a comment about the vocals, and them being angelic. Part of it, of course, is Jon Anderson's famous alto tenor voice, but Chris Squire, the bass player and backing vocalist, was in a pretty famous boy's choir at some cathedral as a lad and this choir singing with its harmonies always stuck with him - notice how he always sings straight, never using vibrato, just clear and true, and powerful.

    It's awesome that Yes has caught your interest so quick! I do think Close to the Edge is their best album over all, but it's far from being their only album of this kind of quality. I'd say Gates of Delirium is a good next choice.
    I appreciate your edits haha. I also don't find your explanations particularly unformed. It's well and good if someone can really be articulate about music, but I think it's more important that you can express the gist of what you're experiencing, since how are we really supposed to express in clear terms what music makes us feel? It's plain to see you appreciate it.
    If you're really clicking with Yes, then no need to go off to other prog bands until you feel satisfied with your exploration of them. But if you're up for it, I'm sure lots of people are giving you great recommendations from Genesis and other bands, but let me to offer Mike Oldfield. What you said about feeling like you're being taken through various scenes in a video game made me think Mike Oldfield would interest you; he creates these enchanting little worlds that come and go and turn into other little worlds, and it really is the most enchanting thing. The best place to start is his first album, Tubular Bells (you might recognize the intro theme as the Exorcist theme, but it wasn't intended for that haha); and his next couple albums are even better. The whole album is only two longs tracks, so if you're up for it--! You mentioned how at the end you really had to close everything out to hear all the details of Siberian Khatru; Mike Oldfield is like that, but he really repeats parts a lot, so that at first it sounds like it's minimalistic, but the more you listen and meditate on it, the more you hear what depth there is in each part.
    Anyway, I'm sure you'll be offered more than enough good music and I'll look forward to whatever you choose as your next steps!

    • @rasengankhan
      @rasengankhan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gates of Delirium is going on hold for as requested by many comments saying I should build up to it which I am 100% down for if it means I can understand/appreciate it better.
      Mike Oldfield is now on the list. (I haven't seen Exorcist so no association there.... Though if its a famous enough sound I may have heard it. Hopefully not 🤞

      @@WooBino. Well, there's always the argument that White grounded Yes somewhat and kept them from floating away entirely. I've met Alan and he was really a gracious guy. His is more of a rock style than a prog style I'll admit. I always loved Bill Bruford who's inventiveness never failed to amaze and entertain me. Yes became what Jon wanted it to be and that's why it never totally left the atmosphere the way King Crimson did at times. He didn't let it become TOO abstract. Alan was part of that formula in my opinion.
