    I'm so delighted and relieved to see you back after such a long absence. I was the one responsible for introducing you to Yes, with Close To The Edge. You clearly enjoy going down the Yes rabbit hole so would highly recommend their Awaken album.

    Jon Anderson was inspired by great literary works. Apparently this song was inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s War & Peace...truly an incredible piece of music capturing the run up to, chaos of and aftermath of War.

    I always felt that this song was intended to drag you into the hell of war and then bring you peace. The entire generation that came of age in the late 60/early 70s, was effected by the Vietnam War, even outside of the US
    .

    Goosebumps... yes indeed. That means you GET it. I have been listening to Yes for over 40 years, and I still get chills, goosebumps, and even the occasional tear from the music. It never gets old. The transition between the battle, the triumph, and the aftermath (Soon) is Yes at its absolute finest... Soon does not achieve its full impact without listening to the entire song with the buildup, IMO. You are absolutely correct, Yes songs, especially the long pieces, take multiple listens to even start to scratch the surface. If you want more goosebumps, please react to Awaken from their Going for the One album.

    "The Gates Of Delirium" is about a war. The build up to it, then the frantic battle section followed by that glorious victory melody, and finally the 'Soon' section, which is the prayer and peace ending.

    My favourite Yes album. I first listened to Relayer in 1975 and saw them perform GoD at Cobo Hall in 1976, which appears on the Yesshows album. In fact, it is my favourite musical piece ever! It moves me on a such a visceral level, that I stopped listening to it for about 20 years, it affected me so much. But thanks to your channel (& some others) I have been enjoying it again through the rections and the tears that inevitably come. An absolutely stunning piece of music. Their Magnun Opus I would say.

  • @simonoleary9264
    @simonoleary9264 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Apparently, Relayer (the album) is inspired by Tolstoy's War & Peace.
    So, Gates of Delirium is the "War" part of it, hence references to battle, conquering etc.
    This, of course, means that the album is a whole entity, rather than a collection of songs (Concept albums are a very Prog thing).
    If you're still on the lookout for weird, try "Grendel" by Marillion. This was on the B-side of their first single, and in my opinion it is epic (based on Beowolf).

    • @rasengankhan
      @rasengankhan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Albums that are a full project are fantastic to listen to in their entirety without distraction. Just not ideal for a TH-cam video unfortunately.

    This song is of the type that gets better and better the more you listen to and learn. The more you learn, the more you like. Songs like "Supper's Ready" and the entire "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" album by classic Genesis are similar in character and quality.
    I confess, the first time I heard "Gates" was in 1977, and my first impression was "Whats with all this noise?" I did not like one bit. I was just a 17 year old budding YES fan at the time.
    Today I feel it's one of the greatest tracks ever. Best to listen to the whole thing, all 3 tracks in a row to really get the most of it.
    Today it's "That was wild". In a few years and if you stick with it, your thoughts will change to "This is Awesome!".
    Join us. You will not regret. Let the music play.

    Btw, just like Close to the Edge, this album contains only three songs. One side long epic, and two ~9 minute pieces. Sound chaser is one of my favorite and To Be Over is beautiful. If you like the classic weird prog of the 70s, you could try something like “Recycled” 16min + 19min by Nektar or “Karn Evil 9” 29min by ELP. But they may not be as weird as Yes. Just super creative

    It's guitar. Steve just uses a tone that fits in with the synthesizer sound. It's easy to think that the keyboards are the bulk of the sound but the guitar and bass are just as involved.
    Something else to keep in mind is, as Alan White once said, "There are a lot of notes in a yes song and you have to play every one of them." While that sounds so basic, listen to how many notes there are. It's mind boggling when you consider that in a typical show there's 2.5 to 3 hours of this endless onslaught of notes and technique.
    You can interpret Jon's lyrics multiple ways. For example is it sun or son that he's referring to?

    Shame you weren't around in the 70's to be able to hear this hundreds of times, then spend the next decades hearing it hundreds of times more; Then loving it even more than the first time you hear it...A life spent with YES is a life well spent. :)...And you don't need headphones either. A good set of speakers and a clean recording and good ears lets you hear EVERY nuance, Headphones have a limited frequency response. A nice pair of 3 way speakers gives a more diverse selection of sounds. YES, like much of the greater prog genre washes over your body, your hairs should be flowing with the sound...It's an exquisite experience...When you really "get" this song, for the first time; "Soon" will bring a tear to your eye.

    Should have seen this live in '75. THE most powerful concert Yes ever did. Height of their musical powers. Oh to see that show just one more time...!

    Hi Rasengan... Found you through your CTTE video, and I'll be honest, I nearly didn't watch it.. All the "Who are these guys, never heard of them" stuff at the start. Really glad I stuck with it though... Anyway, you probably realise by now just how twisted and fractured Yes's history is, but just in case you missed it this documentary covers all the differing lineups over 40 or so years... For what it's worth, having lived through the late 60s and 70s stuff, Yes consists of Anderson, Bruford, Howe, Squire and Wakeman .... At a pinch Wakemen and (hurts to say this) Bruford can be substituted, but without Jon, Chris and Steve the band isn't Yes :)

    Hi rasengan, nearly missed this one! Nice reaction! If you want to diversify slightly, prog had a slow comeback in the late '90's with new works primarily from Porcupine Tree / Steven Wilson. Try song "Fear of a Blank Planet" live in Tilberg as a good sample. Slightly heavier then Yes, PT/SW are often described "as if Pink Floyd and Tool had a baby". BTW Steven Wilson is the guy who remastered the Yes editions you listen to; he's very much into Yes - but not just. Lots of metal and avant-garde from him e.g. Opeth's Blackwater Park album; Routine etc etc etc (look him up). "Trains" also a good example.

    What next? Re Yes: well, after Side 1 of Relayer there is Side 2. Or backtrack - suggest all 6 sides of Yessongs, as that wraps up their prior work (and is great listening!). Or - a major challenge - Tales from Topographic Oceans. A monster work of around 1hr 40 mins over 4 sides. Astonishing music.

    Anderson's lyrics are more formed on the sound of the words and whatever was on the mind of Jon Anderson. For me, Awaken is my fave, butGates of Delirium stands out for the musical portrayal of Patriotism that lead to the horrors of war, and resolves to a bleak yet soulful peace. Because Moraz plays the keys and adds what Wakeman could not, the album is a hidden masterpiece of composition, musicianship, and poetry.

    Sudden confusion about time and often about place (where they are) may be an early sign of delirium. If delirium is severe, people may not know who they or other people are. Thinking is confused, and people with delirium ramble, sometimes becoming incoherent. Their level of awareness (consciousness) may fluctuate.

    Youwere wondering what instruments were playing what sounds. Watch the live symphonic version of this (around 2001, I think), where you can see who is playing what. This is one of my favorite yes songs.
    As a big yes fan, in 1974, the Relayer tour preceded the album release. So I heard it live prior to being able to listen to it on the album. I did not like it at all. Yes music grows on you, and often the first listen is rough.
    As for Yes lyrics, you generally cant make sense of them. I just listen to the sound, and love the voices. You do get the feelings of war, chaos, and the aftermath. And Im sure Jon Anderson knows what the words mean. This was the height of Yes, and Gates is truly one of their best accomplishments.

    I think the person who said pretentious, self-indulgent crap has not listened to this record closely enough (or maybe too closely).

      It's about war. It's just from multiple perspectives. The justification for war, as well as the consequences of war.

      @@Relayer6a yes. The incentivising / moralising / whipping on into war. The fight, the destruction, the remorse on realising what price all that anger and pain has wrought. The bliss of the new day bringing peace.

    Now flip the record over and listen to side 2, Sound Chaser and To Be Over. Sound Chaser is remarkable while To Be Over is a lesser song.

    • @drwugong
      @drwugong 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reaction guys don't seem to play sound chaser very often, i suppose it's not "as good" as the admittedly fucking amazing instrumental section of gates, but it's tight and delicious. I certainly play it more than gates as gates is as draining as it is lifting. Still can't beat that Howe guitar rise at about 10 mins into gates though!

      "To Be Over" is hardly a lesser song at all. It's a meditation on life after death, and exquisitely beautiful.

    Back on lyrics. Even Bill Bruford commented that jon anderson talks in sentences no one can understand as did the reviews when their records come out. Take a look at the lyrics to siberian khatru. Pretty abstract. He plays with the sounds of words alot. But real meanings? Doesnt stop.me from loving the music
