Glad to see you’re still swimming after the deep dive. I first saw YES in 1973, probably at their peak (see their triple-live album “Yessongs” where the power of the band really shines). Most YES fans would say their classic/best period was the six studio albums from “The Yes Album” in 1971 through to “Going For The One” in 1977. “Tales From Topographic Oceans” tends to alienate a lot of people (it certainly did the keyboard player, Rick Wakeman, as he left after it) so I wouldn’t recommend that next. On the other hand, as you’re still afloat, “The Gates Of Delirium” off “Relayer” is SCUBA level. It was inspired by Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” with the instruments in the middle section portraying the battle (so it sounds rather chaotic, as war is), but it ends with one of the most beautiful pieces they ever did. It’s my favourite prog. rock song even 45 years later. Enjoyed the whole half hour of your video, and cheers for the shout out.

Prog fans are not afraid of long songs. Pausing is ok too. Cutting I dont like, I am prepared to listen it on its entirety.
Amazing album, love the impact it has on you! Great stuff.
I certainly am a Yes fan, but I only found them a few years ago. Fragile, The Yes album and this CTTE are my favourites so far. Relayer is a close. Albums after that have not been too impressive for me, but I am still learning.

True, prog fans are not averse to the 20 minute-long song here or there 🤣
That's good to know, I prefer the pausing and rewinding as well, so I think I will be going back to that. 👌
It's a very impact-full album and I'm one to try and get lost in the music anyway.
Hey it's good to see other people learning alongside me too :)

Thank you for introducing more people to YES
I don't know how many times I've been to YES concerts, mostly in the late 70s early 80s
I'm such a YES fan that one time I saw them on a Friday or Saturday in one city and then a few days later my friends and I traveled to there next show in a different State just to see the same concert.
I lived in the country, on a farm and I found out years later that after us kids left for school in the morning my Mom would go into my room and Crank YES on some huge speakers I had, and the neighbors who lived over an eighth of a mile away would complain about us kids playing music to loud! Lol I was my mom all along.
    Thanks again

Rasengankhan, I don't know why it brings me such joy to watch you listen to this album. Perhaps it's nostalgia on my part; YES has been a part of my life since my early teens. To see someone experience the same awe and joy as I did when I discovered them is satisfying on a level I did not expect. Peace.

I first heard this when I was 12 in '74, I had an older brother with a Massive sound system, while everyone was gone one day I went in his room and played the studio albums,
and when my brother got home, I told him I had listened to them, and my remark to him was "But they could never play any of this stuff Live" then he handed me YESSONGS!!!!!

I heard this first mid-70s, in high school. Headphones, beanbag chair and bong. I’m now 62, now I’m going to scare you- we have the same haircut! Lol. Mine is blue tho. Seen Yes every tour thru Dallas-Fort Worth. Met them several times, last time being 2019. I still get goosebumps listening to CTTE LP, and so many others. I never thought of them as Prog Rock. I just thought of them as the band that took my soul on beautiful journeys. And they still do.

  • @pinkraven4402
    @pinkraven4402 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hmmm... I think I can give you some tips about what you could listen to next ;)
Well, prog rock is veeery diverse. I think that Pink Floyd is the best introduction into it because they are geniuses but, you know, not as hard to get as some prog songs. For example "The Gates of Delirium" by Yes is a masterpiece but it's a musical madness, a lot of tempo/rhythm changes, very dense and complex structure and so on. I think it's a good thing to listen to it after other songs.
On the other hand Pink Floyd songs like "Echoes", "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", "Time", "Dogs", "Pigs", "Keep Talking", "Sheep", "High Hopes" are phenomenal but at the same time they are easier to get into, they can be appreciated by anyone more easily.
Also when it comes to old-school prog rock the most famous bands are: Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Rush, Genesis, Camel and Van Der Graaf Generator.
You've already heard "Close To The Edge", the next most obvious step when it comes to Yes would be their previous album "Fragile" or the songs from it - "Roundabout", "The Heart of The Sunrise" and "South Side of The Sky". Then you can listen to "The Gates of Delirium" and other stuff :)
When it comes to Pink Floyd it's usually best to listen to their entire albums at once because they had really original approach. Most of their albums are so called concept albums which means that they are oriented around one certain idea or follow a certain plot. All their songs transition/flow into each other fluently. The best thing you can do is just to listen to "Dark Side of The Moon" with lyrics. It's a special album, it's about life - about all out fears, passing of the time, dying, money, war, madness... Prime example of a concept album and Pink Floyd style of connecting the songs. Believe me, listening to this LP is one of the biggest favour you can do to yourself intellectually :) Then you can listen to "Wish You Were Here", "Animals", "The Wall" and their 24 minutes long epic suite "Echoes" - it's just... Beyond words... Imo "Echoes" and "DSoTM" are must listens haha. But you can really listen to almost anything by them...
About Rush... They are probably the nicest musicans yoy could ever met. They look like normal guys and radiate kindness while some other rockstars are douchebags haha. Unfortunately their drummer Neil Peart passed away about a month ago because of cancer... :( He was a badass and lived his life to the fullest... He got through many things in his life. His first wife died from cancer and his daughter died in a car accident around the same time... He didn't lose will to live, he took his motorcycle and travelled across America for like 2 years. He even wrote a book about his experiences. He was also arguably the greatest rock drummer of all time. Actually every Rush member and there were only 3 of them, was a beast with their instruments. About songs... It's good to start with songs like "Tom Sawyer", "Limelight", "YYZ", "Losing It" or go straight up into "2112"a sci-fi dystopian hard rock suite haha. Then listening to their album "Hemispheres" with lyrics is a great idea or at least the song "La Villa Strangiato" - it's arguably their best song and in my opinion it's in top 3 greatest guitar solos of all time! This track is based on dreams of Alex Lifeson, the band's guitarist. Although it's an instrumental, it tells a story via music itself. Must listen imo :)
King Crimson unfortunately block videos :/ But you could at least listen to "Starless" even just for yourself. It's just... Wow... This song is just beyond words, it has probably the most beautiful ending of all time... You just have to experience it... I saw cut reaction to Starless which wasn't blocked so it might work. Also King Crimson's first album "In The Court of The Crimson King" is considered one of prog rock biggest achievements.
Camel - "Lady Fantasy" or "Ice" will do. I'm not really much into them so yeah haha
Jethro Tull is more folky. Not really my style but songs like "Aqualung", "My God", "Locomotive Breath" are definitely classics. They offer muuuuch more but I'm totally not an expert when it comes to Jethro Tull.
Genesis - "Firth of Fifth" is my favourite song from them and one of most beautiful things I've ever heard too. Also my top 5 greates guitar solos. This song is like the best, most cohesive and unforced blend of classical and rock music ever. It's just so natural yet original. Imo it's a Moonlight Sonata among rock pieces. Without sounding grotesque at all. You can also just listen to their most famous LP "Selling England by The Pound" or "Foxtrot" or "A Trick of a Tail". "Supper's Ready", a suite from "Foxtrot" is often considered band's greatest achievement.
I also can recommend one stunningly great contemporary artist - Steven Wilson. This guy is awesome! His suite "Luminol" is definitely one of the most beautiful things my ears have ever witnessed... I can recommend you the entire album "Raven That Refused to Sing (and Other Stories)" which is a really dark concept album - set of stories about people dealing with their dark past or inner darkness. I highly recommend from it previously mentioned "Luminol", "Drive Home" and "Raven That Refused to Sing". Last 2 ones definitely with very touching animated music videos. I also recommend "Trains", "Russia on Ice" or "Routine" - another song with touching, great animation.
Sorry for chaotic style but I'm writing on my phone and I'm super sleepy haha! Hope you'll read it took me so long haha
    Have a nice day! :)

      @rasengankhan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm thinking that next after I've been through some of Yes's top requests I will get onto Pink Floyd. I've had a few comments say they are an easier introduction in Prog Rock as well as the fact that I've actually heard of them in everyday life before.
By the sounds of it Dark Side of the Moon will be my first listen of Pink Floyd and i'll try and do the whole album on one go. There will be pauses or cuts in the video as I'm sure the TH-cam gods won't be pleased if I put the while thing up uncut 😅
It's a real shame to hear about Neil Peart passing. RIP.
Just based on your comment he and the band members of Rush sound like amazing people.
No need to apologise for a chaotic style of writing, you've clearly taken a serious amount of time and effort out of your day to write me a very comprehensive comment to guide my on my musical journey. Something I can only be thankful for. If anything I should be the one apologising for taking so long to reply. I saw your comment a while ago but I was determined to read it all though and reply properly when I did.
I hope you have a fantastic day as well. 😁

Way back, when I was at secondary school in the mid seventies. We were allowed to go into the music department and play albums in the lunch break. I will never forget the day when someone borrowed this album from an older brother and played this. I was stunned had never heard anything like it at the time. Changed my life, learnt to play keyboards made a life with music because of this song. When you see someone else hear it for the first time it brings back those memories. Thank you.

Followed you specifically for your choice to cover and react to 'Close to the Edge' ... and old college favorite of mine. Might as well make it three of three and go for 'Siberian Khatru' .. maybe the first complete album that deserves a listen. One reason is because S.K. is so completely different and yet similarly unpredictable as the other two. 'Gates of Delirium' is also some lengthy 'Close to the Edg-ish' heavy stuff, though darker and than CTTE.. The complexity requires lots of time and multiple listens.
I listened to this as a college freshman, and can still smell bong water in the shag carpet of the dorm room.
The fact that you naturally break it up into short chunks, not only to avoid demonetyizing, might be good way to keep the attention spans of both new listeners and those familiar with the music.
I am not sure yet regarding the types of songs you are going to cover ... but I have a suggestion. At the top of Yes doing their thing, the next generation reacted with an opposite swing from complexity to punk - and that's when I said goodbye to the popular music scene, and started looking for things that would push beyond even prog. rock for complexity and virtuosity.
I later became a big fan of Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, Oregon, Weather Report ... that jazz fusion scene mostly happening on the other side of the Atlantic (no pun intended 😆) ... but there is one song I would like to recommend to you in particular for now ... Chick Corea's title cut from his first 'Return to Forever' album. It came out at about the same era of early Yes, but these were jazz musicians using rock, hard bop, and Brazilian approaches that gave an interesting twist to relentless simplicity and complexity. And Flora Purim's vocals ... what a beast.
Depending on whether you choose to go in that direction, I will hit the bell button as well, and I think NOT knowing musical terms is advantage to most of us. Contrary to to the saying, 'talking about music is NOT like dancing about architecture.'
Any way .. I like your style. And here is Chick's classic that changed my world ... th-cam.com/video/EHnX9AF8-fc/w-d-xo.html If it goes good with you, I have lots of suggestions that will take you to new worlds.

'bong water in the shag carpet of the dorm room' might be the best thing I've seen in my comments so far 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I really appreciate the time you've taken to give me a specific suggestion and based on what you've said about ' jazz musicians using rock, hard bop, and Brazilian approaches' that has more the piqued my interest.
I will certainly get to your suggestion but it may be a little while. I think i'm going to concentrate on the main Yes requests in one go and then branch out from there.
Actually while replying to this comment I have just started a word doc to make a list of everything I have been suggested in the comments of my videos. Chick Corea - Return To Forever is at the top of the list as of right now but might be superseded in order by previous video's comments.
Cheers for the comment Steve 👌

As you can see, Yes fans are legion. Many of us can air-drum just about every cymbal crash, tom and kick drum hit, can recite all the lyrics, and air-guitar and air-bass and what have you, especially from their classic period. When I saw your original reactions to CTTE, it was clear that you were moved even in confusion, but sometimes your words were far more restrained than what could be intuited from your expressions. Even though it's hard to process everything on first or even second hearing, I would suggest that you simply try to describe the mood you sense in the music and how it affects you with as much spontaneity you can muster in the moment. What are your impressions of the instrumentation and musicianship you are experiencing? Some of us who like Yes because of the classical elements also listen to symphonies where the 18 minutes of a CTTE would be about the size of a single movement in a four movement work. Acquiring this type of patience does take practice, but this is also why oldheads complain about today's lack of attention span. What will you do to cultivate a longer span to appreciate the recurring themes in CTTE, for example? I agree that you don't need a degree in music theory to express an opinion, but on the second hearing of CTTE, or even And You and I, for example, you should probably be able to identify more concretely what it is that you do like and to be able to say more than "you really liked it". Your channel will become better because of it. Not hating, just saying, ok?

I would suggest you listen to the whole song and show your whole reaction, do not chop it up. The song is also for your audience to listen to while we watch your reaction. And at least for YES, you have to listen to the whole song thru with out interruption, it is not just a song but a trip. You have to stay in the experience, comment after your first go thru. Big yes fan but I just wanted to offer my opinion I'm whether you should pause during the song or cut it up while you're listening to the whole thing. Watched a lot of reaction videos and I think people like to watch you listen to the whole song but I also listen along with you.

Next time you should stop the song comment then continue the song don't chop up the video. People want the whole song! But good job! Do Fragile and Going for the one! But continue on your Yes journey!

Pausing is fine, but there's really no need to go back more than 10 seconds, imo.
Also, hearing you critique the music and offer your opinion is why people enjoy reaction videos. We've all heard this music many times. What we love is watching how people react when they hear it for the first time and their analysis of it too.
Hope you can start doing more reactions. At least 1 a week would be good. 1 a day even better 🙂

No fucking interruptions! Play the whole song. I absolutely love your reactions but as many times as I've heard these songs whether recorded or live I still detest when the flow is interrupted. No harm intended, just my two cents.

Most classic yes songs are better live. A handful are not. Then, some songs are way way way better live. “And You and I” is one of those. Especially from late 90s and early 00s tours. The studio version pales in comparison.

    • @rasengankhan
      @rasengankhan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I will be sure to check the live version out, Think it's worth a reaction video in itself?
The only reason I ask is that I am generally more of a fan of studio music than live (see my Iron Maiden - Fear Of The Dark (Live At Rock In Rio)) reaction where I listen to both but the live version first....
Maybe I'll like this live, only one way to find out I guess 🤷‍♂️

@@rasengankhan I think the studio version is always the best way to at least get introduced to a new song. Its exactly how the artist wanted you to hear it. Live versions can have problems with sound not being as clean. Also, many, if not most "live" versions are just images of live versions, with either the studio version as the soundtrack, or some other live version from a bootleg dubbed in behind it.

Here is one of the best live renditions of Close to the Edge. The song is split into PT 1 and 2:

greenbluemonkey : that might be true for some bands but not yes. There are a few live versions that have been “touched up” or “corrected” in the studio afterwards but most of their live stuff is live.
