    my sister got a new betta fish recently, and since I told her about all the bad fish abuse that she was doing with her last one (kept in a pitcher without heater or filter) she actually got a 10 gallon tank for him! A good first step, she said she's going to get a filter and heater later down the road. Not as good as it could be, but better than before. I'm hopeful.

    Regarding the fresh water jellyfish (Craspedacusta sowerbii) I did quite a bit of research regarding them (literature only, not professional) earlier this year:
    They are originally from China with a maximum diameter of around 3cm. They have since been introduced to European and American lakes. There are 2-4 different species, however, it seems that each lake harbors only one gender, so they only reproduce by budding of the polyps (sessile form). The polyps become medusas when water temperatures get hot in the summer (25C+ irc)(free floating form) and if you manage to catch adults they wont be able to reproduce.
    They are non native in europe and america but do not seem to be an invasive species per se. As in, we have not found any negative side effects on the local eco systems due to their presence. There are full papers relating water quality, and osmolority to their growth, and describing optimal research setups but it seems till now noone seems to have managed to get medusas to full size or keep them alive longer than 2 months. If you are interested I can see if I can find back the links to those papers.

      What I want to know is if any research has been done on the toxins of these jellyfish because I've known they existed for a bit, but after snowflake hydroids decimated my one and only saltwater reef attempt, I'm leery of any hydroid and especially medusa in a tank, though I'd be less so if it could be proven that fish are a bigger threat to them then they are to the fish, though it seems like knowledge of how deadly saltwater ones like the snowflake species can be is pretty isolated to seahorse keeping and breeding forums, so I wouldn't be surprised if common knowledge did the same here. Tbf freshwater hydroids without a medusa stage have already been experienced and discussed within fishtanks and it seems the consensus is they're really only a threat to fish fry and inverts, but species with the medusa stage can be far more destructive due to having mobility on their side. Hopefully they don't employ 15 different toxins in their sting though because they are cute, but even in a species tank I'd be worried about cross contamination into a tank with, say, my nano fish that are at much higher risk for predation. Ig we'll wait and see though and I hope it's good news

    I finally got a mustard betta after cycling my 10 gallon for almost 3 months! He’s living the life now. I’m getting some bamboo shrimp soon to put in there and I’ve been cycling a 30 gallon for an axolotl! This is the best hobby

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's great but I'd suggest getting a different shrimp species, we had/may still have a bamboo shrimp at our LFS that was somewhere in the 3-4in length range and they're filter feeders, not scavengers, so I've seen mixed reviews about keeping them alive. Not that I don't want one or two myself though, but long term I don't think more then one will do well in 20+gal and with a 10gal... I just hate watching people go through the heartbreak of losing a pet

      @tifanisaladino5854 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tifanisaladino5854 no problem ^^ I think they're really neat but they are chonkers and also have really specific breeding requirements (hatchlings and adults can't survive in the same conditions) so you've also only got I think... 2-3yrs with one if you get it super young? It might be 1-2yrs, most freshwater shrimp are pretty short lived tbf. Hard to say though with a betta since some will do just fine with little guys like cherry shrimp but others won't, or won't unless you have thick enough plants that he can't follow them in to pick everyone off, so waiting on a few bigger and cheaper ghost shrimp might be a good idea. Ig there's also, depending on your area and if you mind mail ordering, the option to look into another species like the malawa shrimp that's sorta similar in color to ghosts with more the body plan and size of neos or crystal shrimp, but the only breeder ik of atm won't be selling any of his line for another month or two if I remember right so good luck picking some invert friends. I hope you can find the perfect peaceful match for your tank ^^

    • @tifanisaladino5854
      @tifanisaladino5854 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@discordiacreates6669 I appreciate the help! My betta (Blue Cheese because he’s yellow and blue lol) is still really small so I think smaller shrimp might be okay with him. And I have Java moss in there for them to hide in. There’s just soooo many breeds of shrimp so it’s definitely hard to find the right kind. I thought about snails too but since they breed so darn fast, I don’t think they’re the right fit for me. Plus I don’t have the heart to commit snabortions 🥲

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tifanisaladino5854 yeah there's plenty of shrimp to choose from so I'd start with knowing your tank parameters and looking for shrimp species that prefer or at least tolerate your water conditions to make acclimation easier, since they can be difficult to acclimate, pretty much only ghost shrimp will take being dumped in with minimal casualties ^^'. Snails though depend on the species and how much algae your tank grows vs how much fish food you allow to hit the bottom. If the answer is a lot on either, most "pest" snail species will breed to the point of being unsightly but if the answer is a little, they won't push their population past its resource limit. With shrimp though, aside from the bamboo that strongly prefers floating food, food hitting the bottom will be an issue as you'll need to do so to feed the shrimp, so I'd suggest looking into nerite snail breeds. Ik not everyone likes scraping their eggs off of the glass and decor in their tank but as they're estuary fish that evolved to breed in brackish or saltwater conditions, it's guaranteed even with multiple that they won't reproduce in freshwater. Another option, though I'd say not for anything under 20gal for beginners, is a single mystery snail but they're living bulldozers with no grace, will overeat to the point of health issues if allowed and it's pretty hard to tell males from females apart. They will also crawl outta the tank, especially if you get a female, because their eggs cannot be submerged or they drown, yet at the same time require high moisture to survive. I mean though... Intentionally owning a female mystery snail is probably something people do as any eggs layed can be knocked down into the tank and eaten by the inhabitants, but they're still messy derps that get a good size so keep that in mind if you consider them. Nerites or pond/bladder snails are my recommendation though, pond snails are "pest" snails and not as big or pretty as others but I've actually rarely had ones with a fast reproductive rate and I find them pretty interesting (and a betta may eat them before the shrimp) but to each their own on that one since they do require more careful feeding balancing to avoid getting annoying

Forget doing anything other than sleep there. So yeah, it's the living room or nothing

      This is familiar for me. I have one of my largest tanks in the kitchen along the wall and parallel to the table, i eat opposite side facing it or when I'm working on my planner, wreath making, or paint pouring. Added kitchen friends in two 5G on each counter, one by the coffee maker the other under the cabinet I go to while cooking. So they get SO much attention.
      My livingroom room has my biggest tank three 10g and one 5g, my big one is currently set up on the floor though as my fiance is building a stand. So when they get their evening feeding I'll usually grab a pillow and lay there watching all of them. My 17 yr old daughter always catches me and thinks I'm nuts 🤣

    We recently sold our home and moved into RV, at that time I had to give up all of my aquariums, and say, I put my heart and soul into them is a serious understatement. I’ve been in the RV for about six months now and we’re currently not moving around a lot. We got about a year to go before our last son graduates high school. Anyways, I was thinking eighth aquarium would be out of the question for an RV because it’s water and water and RVs do not mix however recently I’ve been having an itching I just love the nature in My Home, I’m thinking what I could do is do a smaller aquarium something that could easily be lifted so when we do move, I could drain it halfway down and use a battery charger with one of those battery air pumps to pump air into the aquarium during our moves. I’m thinking like Endler’s live bears and shrimp would be great. The tank would have to be small though probably 3 gallons maybe five but I think a couple of endlers and some shrimp could live pretty happily in a heavily planted little 3 to 5 gallon aquarium. What’s your guises thoughts?

    • @spandogg3595
      @spandogg3595 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wouldn’t bother with the endless… I would recommend shrimp… they are way more interesting

      No endlers, they may be pretty small and hyper fish but they're easier to stress then people tend to give them credit for. Honestly, I'd suggest something that's already been done before in that kinda situation and get the biggest lidded glass jar you can and stuff it with plants in a deep substrate and do a few small shrimp and snails in it. Doesn't have to be drained when moving, just close the lid and open it when you've settled in the next spot. Whenever you get settled in a more permanent spot (if that's what your aim is, ik some people love the mobile home life) you'll hopefully have lots of shrimp and plants, maybe even enough to start a second jar from the first's stock, and an LFS that will buy the excess would be a bonus. The snails though... Hard to find a species small enough but there are ramshorn breeders you can find remotely that would be interested in certain color morphs- how badly I want a few ivory white morphs 👀- but it seems like pretty much only pea puffer owners have much interest in pond/bladder snails and malaysian trumpet snails are a nuisance about digging through substrates. Trumpets do help with aerating the soil in thinner substrate setups though so there's pros and cons to both, but the pond snails can survive long term if you don't take the lid off at all as long as the plants are doing well. Good luck either way and you don't have to use my suggestion, but I do feel like any fish may not be the best route atm and wanted to point out an alternative

      @@discordiacreates6669 I think the endless would do just fine there. A favorite fish are mine and I should have mentioned that I am an expert level fish keeper. And we’re not moving around much for about a year and a half. If I had my choice, I would do killi fish as I had so much fun raising them, but it’s very tricky, and that would be hard to accomplish in the RV

    Also, with that leaking aquarium 7:57, don’t have those wires just hanging straight out of that tank. Put a command hook or nail above the tank, hang your wires off that, and the plug it in. Gravity/surface tension will flow water from your tank directly into the shock strip/outlet.
