- Dear friends, I hope you’re well. In these complicated times when people are dying or going into exile to avoid war, being a musician can sometimes seem futile. But sharing music and giving emotions is what we musicians have been put on earth to do, and arts are even more important in dark times to remind us humanity and purpose. That’s why I would like to dedicate this video to all people suffering of war at the moment.
For today’s video, I'm very honored to have 4 exceptional guests: Carlos Ferreira (Principal of @orchestrenationaldefrance), Sebastian Manz (Principal of SWR Symphony Orchestra), Philippe Cuper (Principal of @operadeparis) and Julien Hardy (Principal bassoon of @philharmoniquederadiofrance) 😍 We decided to play one movement of the well-known Vivaldi concerto for 4 violins RV580, a gem extracted from L'estro armonico (The Harmonic Inspiration), which is a set of 12 concertos for stringed instruments first published in Amsterdam in 1711.
But you’ll tell me, what is the link between us 5? We are simply all prizewinners of the @ard_competition in Munich! Philippe Cuper in 1982, myself in 1998, Sebastian Manz and Julien Hardy in 2008, Carlos Ferreira in 2019, an incredible competition that definitely changed our lives.
It’s also the occasion to show you a wide variety of clarinet models, Philippe is playing a beautiful old RC Prestige built in the early 80’s, I’m playing a boxwood Legende that many of you know already from previous videos, Carlos is playing a gorgeous Légende and Sebastian, especially for this video is playing… the brand new Buffet Légende GERMAN SYSTEM! A clarinet designed by the Buffet R&D team with the precious advices of Matthias Schorn and Reiner Wehle 🔥

I've never realized, until you, how extraordinary versatile the clarinet can be, being capable of rendering music designed to be played by many other sorts of instruments. You can be at peace with yourself, because you utterly and gorgeously fulfilled your role here on Earth, to instill in us, with your music, emotions so pure that only gods can inspire. Actually Vivaldi did know the clarinet, he wrote two concertos for two clarinets and used it in other concertos and arias.

One of the best Vivaldi concerts in my opinion. The concerto in A minor for 4 violins. I really liked that you didn't play it alone, but invited 3 more amazing clarinetists for this quartet! Each one with a very good style and I will certainly start following them all. Your own ornamentation in this concert was sensational, very clarinetistic and very baroque, really congratulations to all 4!

Very Surprise! The Vivaldi's Concerto for 4 Violins is one of my favorites. Mr. Nicolas also plays bassoon in the background. I have seen him play harpsichord, horn, and timpani, but this is my first time to see him play bassoon . I wonder how talented he is.

The improvisation is most impressive! And by every player too, that allows a display of distinct inventive solo lines, like good jazz. I don't understand why improv is almost non-existent in other recordings (other than the classic by Il Giardino Armonico), not even among the famed harpsichord period specialists (that's Bach of course, but Bach demands improv too). Bravo.
