Turtwig this time since I chose chimchar back in 2007
Penguin. Its a pokemon game, itll do its job to kill some time during my graveyard shift.
I happen to be ridiculously nostalgic for this game, as pokemon pearl is the first game I ever beat. And I personsally think the upgrades are nice. I like the chibi art style, xp share and removal of HMs. Thats not even mentioning the amazing remixed music. Call me nostalgia blinded, but idc, im having an absolute blast with this game
Agree with you Glen, there’s lots of missed opportunities and quality of life improvements here and selling full price is too much. I don’t understand why they like to discontinue new ideas they add to the franchise. I feel the correct price should be 30 usd. 60 is abusive for what we’re getting with this remake.
To be fair, Gen 4 has been such a sought after remake, that I think the pokemon fanbase would have review bombed the game if they changed anything significantly.
This is a remake not a new generation just wait for arceus legends if you have an issue I love this game and gen 4 will always be my favorite generation

30USD for a new pokemon game is just silly to ask for. It's completely remade, it's not a port!!!
What you're getting with this remake is a great game that you'll easily spend 60 hours in if you breeze through it and hundreds of hours if you get deep into it.
I remember me and my wife playing this back in 07, we picked up the double pack to remember those older days. She always team Turtwig, meanwhile I'm all Piplup!

I like it a lot 🤷🏽♂️ it runs so smoothly. I skipped gen 4 when I was younger so it’s actually nice to play this.
I skipped it as well so i'm really excited to dive into the brilliant diamond. it's been catching a lot of heat, as well as swsh series and arceus, but i've been enjoying swsh and acreus a lot and i'm glad I picked this one up as well.
The only thing I dislike is that the DS games retailed for $35 before tax now they expect us to pay $60 for the same game , crazy.
Its pretty absurd yeah. Nintendo has figured out that they can sell literally anything for 60 dollars and people will buy it. I mean for ffs Mario Kart 8 is still full price...

It’s sad that we couldn’t get the platinum treatment, but I’ll enjoy it for what it is. And for first time players, enjoy your time! Games going forward should toggle the exp share. Cheers guys
They should of remade Platinum with all the Pokémon from the two versions.

Personally I don't mind the random battles generally because you can always just use repels and money isn't that hard to get in this game

Definitely not a bad game, I know some aren’t a huge fan of the art style (myself included) but I’m having fun with it. The new underground is cool, but shame they didn’t include Platinum features really, would have made it a great remake

Im also enjoying the game so far even though im not a chibi fans. Good graphics, smooth gameplay and excellent music but they can do more even some little touch to the character like facials reaction and animations. Also the town need life if u turn the music off the town become dull or maybe its just me but they can do a lot of small thing that can improve the game. Anyway lets way for plat dlc.
probably will resell the same game next year with some lame added features like they did with ultra sun and moon
I skipped the ds in favor of the psp in my teen years. So I never got to play the ds games. I picked up diamond and so far on my third badge. I'm having a lot of fun and brings back the nostalgic feels from the Gameboy days!
I agree with what you said about the art style. It looks off-putting, specially when there are cutscenes and you're given a close up look of the model. They should have just keep it in the top down view. Pokemon S&S turned me off the series so I probably won't buy this game again unless they do some massive overhaul. I mean come on, it's already 2021 and you still have to trade from older gens to get everything. Sad that they also decided to remaster the Pearl and Diamond instead of Platinum. Platinum was my favorite game of the series, next to Emeral and Crystal, since you can catch all the legendaries as well.
My favorite art style in a Pokémon game is Pokémon X & Y. wish they could have remade that game with minor changes to the art style.
No platinum for you to drop 120€ to get all the Legos. Classic Nintendo.
I will never understand why they won't bring back the battle frontier its the most asked for feature from fans new and old and in my opinion its the best post game content they ever made

I got mine today, I got it because I used to love the old Pokemon games (the new ones suck)
I've been playing it and I think I just don't like Pokemon games anymore, I can't get into it, even though I know I enjoyed it the first time round. I think it just doesn't compare to the kind of games I have access to now. I like the chibi characters but overall I think the art style is pretty dull and unappealing.
I've been thinking this more and more, I think B&W2 were the last games I truly enjoyed
back then, when i was a kid I used to play it "illegally" on the nds emulator on my cheap pc, now im an adult and buying it at the current price, I think I'm not only reminiscing about the good times playing the game as a kid, but also "atone for my previous sins" when playing it illegally :')

I'm honestly a bit torn. I remember enjoying Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum a lot, so will probably pick this up, though it's not a day one buy for me. Thanks for the review guys! And to answer the question, I think Turtwig was the one I started with the first time I played through, so that's probably the one I'll go with whenever I do get the game

Mandatory exp share that you can't turn off has really killed the franchise for me. I really wish they'd let you toggle it in a menu

Wish it was optional, but at least the post game gives enough challenge to validate it
In the Grand Underground the Pokemon walk around so you can avoid encounters. They just kept the base game traditional

I love it so much more than the other pokemon games on the switch. Definitely worth it for me.
Exp share should not be there. No one would use their other pokemons that much then. Earlier we had to try our new pokemons so that they level up. Now we can just play with 2-3 and leave rest in the team. This is making the game too easy.
Maybe I'm in a minority here but I'd be more annoyed if they ever removed exp share, it should just be a toggle so everyone is happy. JRPG's using an exp share system isn't unheard of, the SMT games on 3DS did it and the Digimon Stories games did as well, I don't understand why it's suddenly sacrilege when Pokemon does it when all it does is reduce grind.
@@Corthmic because then you won't use your other Pokemons in a battle that much. Earlier we used our newer Pokemons for battles in the wild to level up their XP. But now we can just use our strongest and get the job done.
@@Samkayis You literally get the option to switch at any point before battle and after every faint during a battle, and type advantages still encourage switching. If people aren’t switching it up, that’s on them.

No Pokémon game is fun without exp share it’s just grindy and tedious
The stickers aren't new, they were in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum and were an aspect many fans have wanted back since because of the added customization
Just bought it here in Japan, it’s about 1500yen used these days. I live here so it’s very cheap now and much more affordable for such a great game.

With these remakes of previous entries instead of releasing two versions, they should release the enhanced versions that came out after them like yellow, crystal, emerald and platinum.

I'm a dude who has played every generation up to Gen VII, but somehow since LGPE, Gamefreak has been incorporating gameplay mechanics that keep deterring me from wanting to buy and play their Pokémon games. BDSP is no different. It's a miss from me. Sad too, since Diamond and Pearl was when I got back into Pokémon in a big way.
Gotta love how they cut out several cool mechanics and make the EXP Share impossible to turn off.

Turtwig FTW
Gen 4 is one that I skipped over (no specific reason). So, this feels like a fresh start for me. When it was first announced I was excited to finally get a Pokémon game that caters to the nostalgic feel. And I’m glad they went the route of top down because that’s my preferred style of play over the 3D iterations (not knocking Sword or Shield, just personal preference). I love the art style and the soundtrack (especially gym battle tracks). Only got one badge so far and I’m trying to pace myself so I can experience everything in full. My only gripe is the exp share because I always enjoyed the grind of leveling up each Pokémon individually but I understand it’s something I’m just gonna have to live with. This is definitely a blast from the past for me. Great review!
Edit: I forgot to note it looks absolutely gorgeous on the OLED

Thanks for the review. I also would have liked them to change the random encounters. I prefer how sword and shield and how lets go has the Pokémon out and visible. I’ve been a Pokémon fan since Pokémon yellow and the change of having the Pokémon out was refreshing. I still might get these one day though as it kind has a little bit of both.

This was my very first Pokémon game back in the day so I picked one up as soon as I could this morning. Ignored the entire backlog to rehash the nostalgia and listen to the remastered music ASAP 🎵 can’t wait!

I can see why showing how effective your moves are against an enemy pokémon can be very practical for new pokémon players and people who don´t play pokémon very much, but as someone who has played pokémon pretty actively since I was like, 5 (I´m now 28) I really wish there was an option to turn it off. I feel like it makes my memory kinda lazy. Anyway, I picked up Shining Pearl and am enjoying it so far :)
I also started playing pokemon when I was 5 :) Didn't speak a word english at that time, and barely knew how to read. But I never had any problems with the pokemon typing system
I agree that showing move effectiveness ruins the game so much. It makes me feel brain dead playing. Why can’t they make it so you can shut this feature off? I seriously hate it and haven’t loved a Pokémon game since they started doing that tbh
It's better than Sword and Shield, that's for sure. Pricing is too much, yep. I think it was a smart move on their end to go for the chibi art style. I did notice that there were some recycled animations in battles. If we're talking about the cutscenes, they can get away with not animating extra stuff. The game is a nice change of pace from Sword and Shield and I can appreciate that since I prefer the old Pokemon game style. If you enjoyed the game, more power to you bro. If you didn't, we can respect your opinion. Everyone's opinion should always be respected without getting into any arguments. Nice review SwitchUp!

Why would anyone realize that? Nintendo/Game Freak aren't going to support this game with anything more than a few bug patches/fixes. They'll probably support it for a year and then call it GG. I'll eat my own ass if they give us and update for it adding in Platinum "DLC".
It just like what the did with let's go to keep us busy until the next game is release in Jan and most likely gen 9 next fall

If you never played Gen 4 I would say pick it up. You won't notice anything missing because it'll be a new experience for you. Nintendo never puts their games on sale for anything decent so unless you want to save like $5 in two years I'd just buy it.
I thought it would be an obvious decision to get the remakes because I’ve wanted them for so long. But these seem more like remasters (I know they’re obviously not but not enough was added or changed for me).
Still no difficulty slider or challenge mode. Adults play these games, I don't know why it's so hard for nintendo to understand this and let them know they need to make it more difficult

I almost wish I hadn't asked for this for Christmas, could have gotten it next week after payday! Am so excited to play it when I do get it though. Pearl was my first Pokemon game back in the day, played on my red DS lite! I decided to ask for Brilliant Diamond though.

Sorry, but I’m in the “disappointed with the chili artstyle”-camp, so I’m voting with my wallet and passing this one (however small a vote I’m aware it most likely is, as these games will sell buckets anyway). Ever since FireRed and LeafGreen Pokémon has games have always been remade with that generation’s technological and graphical advancements in mind. Red and Blue were remade in Ruby and Sapphire’s engine, Gold and Silver in Diamond and Pearl’s engine etc. So for Brilliant and Shining to give us a “remake” that decides to “stay true” to the original artstyle instead of giving us full scale character models and glorious cities like in Sword and Shield, is just lazy in my opinion.

The Pokémon, their animations, and the soundtrack are all BEAUTIFUL. Even the sprites in the menu are the best looking ever imo. This is a love letter to the first 4 Gens.
Sure, they could have done more, but if you respect it for what it is: an awesome nostalgia trip, it achieves expectations.
From my point of view, they do not look so bad but they would have been better if they had taken more time, I am still disappointed with the graphics but what is going to be done cannot be changed, I would have liked it to have innovative mechanics or you will adapt to the current generation like HGSS & ORAS. I would give it a 7.4 I have a question for you which is the best pokémon remake? FRGF, HGSS, ORAS or BDSP
If they were made with the sword and shield graphics would still complain. They are faithful remakes why would they not be chibi? That's how it was in gens 1 through 5 and no one complained so don't complain about it now.
ORAS and HGSS are equally good in their own way imo. I like them both in terms of content, and it is unfair to compare the graphics because HGSS is on DS and ORAS is in 3DS, but they look good in each of their respective console.
BDSP is like a huge letdown if comparing with the remakes like ORAS and HGSS.

I’m glad I’m not wasting my money. If they wanted a top down look, they could have used the Let’s Go graphics style.
Not my favorite generation, even though some of my top 20 do come from Gen 4. I do still enjoy the games. Yes, Platinum would have been better, but this is still a fun remake. And I actually love the chibi art style, same with Link's Awakening remake.
I'm enjoying shiny hunting on this game so far and really enjoyed this detailed review.

I am a huge pokemon fan. It's also a VERY easy game. Thats why it makes me angry that they made this game even easier. I love the graphics but don't care for many of the changes. I am gonna have to wait for a sale for this one but since Nintendo never puts their games on sale I guess I will never play this one. Quit over simplifying games developers!!!😡😡😡
Pokémon is much more accessible now but it does not justify the buy. Specially with the predatory pricing and two games tactic. Very hyped for arceus tho.

I feel like it has to load effects each time you turn it on. My first battle in a new zone always has a delay before starting. Also the touch screen should work for battle options makes no sense that it doesn't.
My partner is a newcomer to pokemon since the let's go games, and I've been playing since red and blue.
Both of us are a few hours in now and we're both having a very good time. Could more effort have been put in like ORAS? Absolutely. But if all you wanted was a faithful version of the games, with some of the modern touches, well then here you go.
I'm pretty happy with it so far. Not the best Pokemon game I've played, but certainly not the worst so far.
The graphics are look ass. I can forgive your partner for being naive, but you are eating crap and telling Gamefreak “thank you” for the privilege

I see the appeal of being able to see Pokémon in the wild, but random encounters just feel right to me.

230 hrs into this game. I love it. Never played the originals. Love the grand underground addition. Me & my brother been having a good time building teams for Wi-Fi battles. Only gripe for me is i wish they had mega evolutions & all the battle items but i know that wouldn’t be keeping true to the old games.
P.s. i hated sword & shield & tbh i have no idea why. Just didn’t click with me if that makes sense

Okay I could use some input. I'm looking for a pokemon game for the whole fam to play through together. This, sword and shield plus the expansion, or wait for the new one next year. Thoughts?
Hope you don't mind my commenting to follow, as I'm wondering the same. I've played a few Pokemon games - though not for several years - and have been wanting to scratch that itch again lately. Debating between the same options you are (Sword and Shield, this remake, or the new game coming out a bit later). Would love some input from more devoted fans of the series.
For a solo outing id say get sword or shield but as you say for the family consider let's go eevee or pikachu, there is two player sort of in the let's go adventure. The pokeball controller is a good novelty allowing you to take a pokemon with you (great to humour young children) and I think you can transfer to the pokemon go app. So erm yea pokemon go plus a let's go game for a family would be the way to go imo

@@masterofyugioh1000 I love the channel and support the content. Watching the video helps the algorithm and promotes the channel. Just to date myself even more, my first console was a Coleco Vision. My kids were/ are big Pokémon and they are very excited for this
I had the exact same frame spasms issue when on my Tv, gave me a headache quick. Zero issue in handheld mode though. Game is awesome.

This is a great game that’s getting hit critically really hard. It’s strange to me, the art style seems like a great compromise. It’s a graphical improvement that creates a fresh looking world while also staying true to the original games gameplay. I’ve put 8 hours in and it’s hands down the best Pokémon experience on switch. There is WAY more content here than swords and shield.
The graphics being better is a opinion not per se fact. 2D’pixels aren’t a bad thing. But this type of looking 3D will always remind people of cheap mobile games. So I can see where those critics are coming from.

@@scoutGOW Look at Link’s Awakening’s graphics and compare it to this one. There is a huge difference. The chino artstyle isn’t the problem at all but the fact that it just looks really cheap and quickly made.

You could buy games from blockbuster? The ones I went to only let me rent
I keep waiting for a Pokemon game that doesn't feel stiff and inorganic. I guess these games will never catch up to Dragon Quest Joker and that was 2007.
Was an insta buy for me since the last pokemon series i did play was on my GBA SP Pokemon Ruby 15 years ago, also i just wanted a nice Pokemon game on my switch to have to play.
Hope you guys will deliver soon a review about Blade of the ruined king.

can you really argue with the price its the same as any other new game who cares if it's a remastered version of diamond but in all reality its still a classic pokemon game
That's the view some will take, not the view others will take at all. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
If you think experience share for all of your party members makes the game too easy there's one thing that should be considered. in the Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee games you can cheat the system by having a player two protagonist help you out when you're in a tight spot. I haven't tried it yet but if PBDSP doesn't allow that then this set of games is quite a bit tougher in comparison.
i love Pokémon, but im getting tired of the same battle sequences, but its thier formula that works, cant argue with that
If you already played the original Diamond and Pearl games, just skip this cuz it’s grid by grid, by the numbers, the exact same game. Imwas expecting something different but 4 gym badges in and it feels boring if you played the original before.
I am looking forward to get both Pokemon brilliant diamond and Pokemon shining pearl games for Christmas🎄. I also would liked to play as Dawn and choose Piplup as my starter Pokemon so I can do better than the anime Dawn and what Piplup would never do. And that is catching more Pokemon and evolve Piplup into Prinplup and then to Empoleon.
However when I was watching TH-cam of any ideas what to expect on Pokemon brilliant diamond and Pokemon shining pearl, but when I was looking to find out about Wonder Trade that I've just found out today that at the moment is unavailable😱. I mean it isn't fair because I was looking forward to get both Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl games for Christmas and I was hoping to used Wonder Trade for any Pokemon I want. Now I'm going to have to wait in early January to hear more news at least that what I though it's going to happen😒.
Turtwig, it has an unfairly op type matchup. But chimchars stats r better. Well i like turtwig better, also it can learn alot more moves than chimchar. So i’d say chimchar would be around the same. While piplup absolutely SUCKS
Pearl and Diamond will always define my childhood. But Pearl is the best
I hope everyone enjoys the remakes, for whatever they are worth, but as a long time fan of the series and knowing how averse The Pokemon Company has been to change the mechanics of the game... Are really dated and far to archaic at this point... I'm not interested in the same old hand holding experiencing these games provide.
Part of me want these games. Sadly it doesn't have Platinum content though as I heard.

Just doesn’t feel worth $80 to me. Especially with another game actually by gamefreak coming out so soon that also might not be worth $80 (I want to be wrong)
