    Update: You can currently pick it up for £39.99 at Currys here in the UK and cheaper than RRP in US as well.
    Aside from my pronunciation of Arceus changing every five minutes, how did you find this one? Are you enjoying the game and hopefully this was of some use! That pun though, I am so sorry! Mark

      Brilliant review. You did massive justice to this game.
      Quite a few of the naysayers misunderstand it for what it is; an expedition game in its own right but underlying it is the new formula and blueprints for future Pokémon games to all look up to and follow. Of course it _can_ go fully Open World from here, with Towns etc. It's all about that initial change in Direction but presenting in to Us in this 'expanded Safari Zone' format is genius!

    Great review, friends!
    I’m about 15 hours in. This is the most fun I’ve had with a Pokémon game in years and years. I’m really hoping this is just the groundwork for what Gen 9 will be. Give me this style with towns, gyms, trainers, new Pokémon, etc… and I might cry. The capture mechanic and exploration are glorious. Even the side quests and extra bits are fun (trees, rocks, crafting, ranks, etc…). Super impressed with this game. And it’s only the beginning.

    • @TheMattAMusic
      @TheMattAMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was a huge letdown for me to see that this game didn’t have the towns and gyms. I loved that progression in previous titles, but the more I’m seeing about Legends, the more I’m thinking about buying it!

      @@SwitchUpYt Completely agree with this too, Pokemon games were just the same thing over and over again for all most three decades. I’m very thankful of the change too.
      The visuals can be questionable, but I think the fun I’m having with Pokémon Arceus overrides it enough for the time being for me, and it’s a relaxing game to play too, even with the slightly revised battle system, which I find a plus point of the game 😊

      It's super chill

    • @JustaMuteCat
      @JustaMuteCat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s so chill that over the weekend while I was exploring the second field area I accidentally had enough points to promote to 6 stars (which gives you access to better rewards and up to lv80 pokes obey you in battle, ultra balls and hyper potion recipe I think), just by attempting to get better at throwing the ball with and without the motion controls enabled and randomly dipping into the space rifts areas for shards and evo mats. The music helps a lot, specially town bgm, I would often just leave the game on while I went around the apartment doing stuff with my headphones on. Honestly think from the 20ish hours I got logged in over the weekend I doubt I spent more than half of it actually running story quests or focusing on researching. In that aspect it’s more more similar to me to another game on the switch, that recently got a release on PC, MH:Rise. There’s quite a lot of things going on Arceus that reminds me a lot more of Rise than BoTW when you actually look at it. The crafting, how the game is divided in a hub and fields, how the inventory works, the material collecting and crafting and so on.

    • @smitty7326
      @smitty7326 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, that's exactly it. Once you get through the VERY dialogue heavy intro sections, it becomes this really chill exploration game. The incredible ease of foraging along with the incredible sense of wonder as you crest a hill and see a new pokemon, it's great.

    This is the BEST review I’ve seen about this game! You totally captured the good and the bad without having to trashing it down. For me this is a completely different Pokémon experience. With some work on the graphics department, voiceovers and some refinement on the story line, I think this can be HUGE! But honestly I’m quite happy I bought it. Super fluid, you can just go out and about catching your Pokémon in a more personal way I think! Must buy IMO

    I've played the game around 30 hours now and I'm really enjoying it. Biggest gripe for me besides the graphics is that I wish the Pokémon list was bigger but other than that this is the kind of Pokémon game I've been waiting for for ages. I hope they take this as a blueprint for future titles because I don't think I ever want to go back to the old formula.

    • @CarynPretorius
      @CarynPretorius 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also would've liked a bigger list but in terms of story it kinda makes sense because the story is set years before the pokemon OG pokemon series. Naturally, it would have less to choose from because you essentially have to fill the very first pokedex. The from then on, you expand.
      I love the old formula, but I totally agree that I would not want to go back.

    • @OvenFreshBread
      @OvenFreshBread 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CarynPretorius You can explain it with the story I guess but in the end it's just technical/time limitations. Though apparently there are 242 Pokémon in the game which is not really a small number.
      Actually I think the problem might have less to do with the number of Pokémon but the fact that there are a handful of Pokémon that you find in several regions so you see them so often it feels like there's not a lot of variety. In other games like this the devs would just go and recolor reappearing enemies so it's not immediately obvious it's the same but they can't do that here.

    I’m still quite early in my gameplay time. But from what I’ve seen so far I’m enjoying the game.
    Like I’ve seen someone else say in this comment section. This game is a solid blueprint for future games. Laid a solid foundation if you will.
    This game has done many things right and many things it so right. I think this game would have been better if it was worked on for another year. Even if to just optimize and polish some things.
    Ultimately I hope they make more of this type of game in the future. Take what worked well with this game and fix/adjust things that are not working as well.
    Thanks for the review SwitchUp.
    And to Those who try this game I hope you can find at least some fun and enjoyment in this game.

  • @davidcbeaudoin
    @davidcbeaudoin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Great review!
    I actually went right from Brilliant Diamond into Arceus, and a half dozen or so hours in, I'm enjoying Arceus way more. It's a lot of little things that are lending to that enjoyment. Movement throughout the world. The seamless switching between catching and battling. The overall feel of said catching and battling. Being in wide open environments where you actually see the Pokemon milling about, meaning no more random encounters and wasting time running around grass hoping to find the 'mon you're looking for. The un-intrusive material collection and being able to craft from the field. Being able to swap out moves on your Pokemon at-will (no more "forgetting"). Quest organization and being able to toggle "guidance" (the game's term for a waypoint marker). The characters, story and world are far more interesting to me in general.
    In the interest of disclosure, I have no nostalgia for the series' roots. My first game was Soul Silver, and the only others I've played are X, Let's Go Pikachu, Sword, and Brilliant Diamond. I know this will be an unpopular opinion with long-time die-hard Pokemon fans, but I'd be totally fine with future Pokemon games adopting this game's structure and mechanics. The series needs to evolve and Arceus is a good start.

    Great review. I'm one of the people who had gotten burned out on Pokemon over the years. Every game was basically the same exact story/formula, sometimes carried out in an even worse way than the game before it. I didn't even bother picking up the last few entries, despite really enjoying my first few experiences with the series overall. This new game feels like a breath of fresh air.
    I can agree with pretty much everything said in this review. I'd also add that the listing/managing of quests is a real pain. You need to open the map, then hit Y, then hit the shoulder button to even see your side quests. Then you have to cycle through toggling each quest on individually (followed by backing out to the map, then repeating the process for the next quest) in order to see where you need to go to work on them. That whole process could definitely have benefitted from the same streamlining the devs put into other aspects of the game.
    The multiplayer options are a bit limited, and I could see that being a disappointment for some (heck, I'd love an option to battle w/my spouse), but I mostly play solo anyway, and as you said, the ability to find dropped pouches from other players and help them out a bit (being helped out in return) makes the world feel a tad less lonely. It would have been cool if the devs had allowed us to specifically help a friend out if that person died and lost something valuable, maybe gaining a bit extra in return. I also wonder how the long term replayability might suffer without the ability to battle other players, but overall I don't miss the multiplayer stuff that much, and could easily sink loads of hours into the game solo if I decide to work on getting every shiny, creating a living Pokedex, etc.
    One of my favorite - often overlooked - aspects of this game is the amount of streamlining that's gone into it. I'm not just talking about battling without load screens (though that's awesome). I'm talking about everything else. It feels like the devs actually respect the player's time. There are no repetitive bits of dialogue or text boxes to click through every time a Pokemon appears, plus you can see exactly which Pokemon are around you and decide for yourself if you want to battle/capture them or not (no random encounters or forced, boring battles). I also appreciate the inclusion of visual cues for things like being spotted by hostile Pokemon, as it allows me to chill out and play while watching/listening to other stuff if I want. While the audio is nice, I definitely love the ability to play without it, as the ability to multitask while playing tends to give games like this much more replayability for me, personally.
    Overall, this game lets you play how you want, when you want, for as long as you want, and I love that.

    86% seems a really fair score and consistent with what most critics are saying. Hardcore Pokemon fans have been rather vicious in their scoring (~77%) but I've really been enjoying it and think you gave it a fair and accurate review.

    From someone that's come from RPG's back in the 90's with intense story driven scenarios that had to be read - I'm totally fine with Arceus not having any voice acting. It's not the end of the world for me. Neither are the graphics. It's like, people forgot how to genuinely enjoy something and almost afraid to give something a perfect score because something can't be perfect. Even *with* a perfect score, no game is perfect - ever. I'm not enough in the game to really give it any kind of score yet, but I'm not afraid to do that for a game that deserves it. In the end - gaming has always been about fun and enjoyment .. and I feel like so many have forgotten how to have that.

    Enjoying it a lot. I only take a break from the game whenever I have to recharge my unit after playing for hours straight. Haha. It's still turn based but I really like how you can move around to see the fight play out from different angles. Also worth noting that if you are behind your Pokemon during a battle and the enemy pokemon attacks, you can also get hit. In fact, if you go behind an enemy pokemon and your own attacks it, you also get some damage if the attack reaches you. I think it's a cool mechanic. I just wish some attacks can also affect multiple enemies when you are facing against two or more, kind of like in previous games when you play two vs two. Also, you should be able to bring out more than one pokemon when you are facing against multiple enemy pokemon.

    I love this game
    Harder then main game as it take time to get parts for potions and revives.
    Cost too much in the village shop so easier to make them so you get more involved in the game.
    And capture and fighting more fun for me.
    seeing effects of moves used to note in you book is a nice touch

      Tbh the most common comment I've read across all the reviews, are DieHard fans saying, "it's good, but it could be better, it's a prototype for what the next games could be" but then they swear it's great. *Sigh*
      So with that I will have to wait for an update, or the next game. Just IMO, looks disappointing, but I hope you can decide on your own

    With voice work I was thinking as playing this earlier that even if they didn't want to put voice acting in they could at least make characters have sounds as you cycle through their text just as Zelda does. That would liven the characters up a bit. Still a great game so far though!

    I LOVE YOUR FAIR AND HONEST REVIEW OF THIS GAME! I've been playing it for the last week and I love Game Freak's ambition! Yes, I agree it is lacking in the graphics department, but these issues are not breaking the game...I find them kinda funny to be honest (especially the disco boulders. Hahaha). Totally worth the money and SO MUCH TO DO! Will be kept busy for a good while with this one! HAPPY GAMING!

    I agree with the majority about this review being the best I've watched/read. Despite the warning at the beginning, you pretty much covered everything that I, a lapsed Pokémon fan, needed to hear to be sold on this game.
    Still, this means another game this month that I feel compelled to buy, and with a full $80 price tag too. Hooray Canada. I suppose "too many good games" is a good problem to have though.

    Dropping a like and comment to commend you guys for writing a fair and detailed review. I think Pokémon and GameFreak have coasted from lax easygoing reviews in the past that are too afraid to be critical. While it's also wholly unnecessary to trash the game in its entirety, I do think this game has a major benefit of the doubt from being a refreshing take on the series. Compared to other works of Nintendo it desperately needs a visual overhaul and clearer art direction. Fingers crossed they take the criticism and advance this new spin on the series further in the future.

    For me, this is the Pokemon game I've wanted since I played fired red in 2004. I played Gold first and for some reason I just expected it to be alot more grand scale? Idk I was young and did nt know much, but seriously, I only got let's go pikachu and shield because my daughter is super into pokemon. But when I saw this game, I really didn't think it was true. The only thing missing from it I think is cooking. The cooking system in shield saved me more than a few times, it would make tons of sense to be able to make curry and have your pokemon and maybe even you gain benefits for out in the field that last 5 minutes or so. Other than that, Legends Arceus is the Pokemon game I've been seeking since the age of 8

    I am over 40 and I've bought copy for my two teenage sons and one also for me... From my perspective, compared to Sword&Shield which we played a lot, I really enjoyed pace of this game and new gameplay elements... Game feels new and refreshing in series and I feel that you have more control over battles and gaining experience in terms of when and what to fight... Boss battles felt sometimes for me a little too much of an action, but boys did some of them for me... From their perspective - as a father I must tell - they have problems to put it away, even after story/credits.... Overall it's a very great game... I hope it gets DLC same way as SaS did

    I found out about Pokemon very late in my gaming life from the lack of owning a nintendo system before the Switch. I tried getting into it from let’s go Evee to going back to 3ds games to back to Pokemon Shield and just couldn’t get into any of the games.
    I decided to try Arceus and have to say I couldn’t be more pleased. I have been completely addicted to the capturing loop from feeling much more involved into the actual act.
    I happen to like the side quests and love leveling up trying to find more clothing options.

    Being a pokemon fan since the OGs from 1998, I was stoked on playing Legends which is something new and refreshing for a franchise that is stalling since years.
    Your review is very fair and reflects my opinion about the game as well. Visuals are just bad. It needs a big improvement but then again, the Switch is too weak/outdated to handle good graphics, good performance and fast load times all at once. Performance and load times are good so the graphics had to be lowered for an optimal experience.
    Also when you mentioned the character „creator“ I imagined how they could improve that. When creating the character the player could be asked a number of questions to determine his starter based on his answer and even the stat bonuses/nature of the starter. There would be a real and immediate bond between the player and the starter pokemon like never before. (There was something similar to this in the off-spin games, Mystery Dungeon). Also at some points the game feels like a beta of an online RPG because it’s just so empty and lifeless.
    Anyways, if Nintendo finally updates the Switch to 2022 tech and goes forward with the ideas behind Legends, the next few Pokemon games could be really good and even more exciting.

    What's funny is how much I keep hearing about the die hards not being a fan of this game, yet I have to witness it anywhere. Everyone I know that has been playing since the original games came out are absolutely loving it. Sounds like some people are stuck in the past while most of us would prefer the franchise to adapt and evolve. They killed it with this game.

    They are wild animals with elemental powers. In the pokedex itself it lists several pokemon that actually lure or kill people. Haunter and drifloom for example
