My biggest criticism of this package is the cost, there was clearly a lot of effort in this but part of me just wishes they had gone that extra mile. As it stands I'm going to wait for an eShop sale on this one which is a shame as the games here are quality, I just don't think there is value at this price point.

Sonic music is some of my favorite music in gaming, removing songs from sonic 3 is kind of a deal breaker for me. I’ll probably pick this up on pc since modding those songs back in will be fairly easy
Nice review, about what I expected. I appreciate the love and care the developers put into this compilation. The involvement of the Sonic Mania devs is evident and welcome. Still, I've got the "3D" versions of Sonic 1 and 2 on my 3DS, Sonic CD on my Xbox One, and the Mega Collection on GameCube, so I'm not exactly starving for this release. I may consider it on sale somewhere down the line though, because who doesn't want everything on their Switch? :D
Since the recent announcement of the delisting of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD from most digital storefronts, I quickly jumped on the chance to still get all these games on the Xbox 360, since they are also playable on Xbox One and Series. While I will eventually get the Sonic Origins collection (hoping for s physical) I am more than happy with the versions I currently got. It's just too bad they suddenly had to delist this stuff after 15+ years. I'm sure some people didn't get them while they were up...
Good balanced review. As a thirty year old who has wanted to play S3&K on updated hardware for some time, I haven’t understood alot of the outrage about Sonic Origins online.
I feel like for the price it would have been nice to at least have included the Master System and Game Gear Sonic games as well. I loved those as a kid. Maybe even Sonic 3D and Chaotix. Sega should have looked at how Konami handled the Castlevania and Contra collections. WAY more value. I'll still get this eventually but it'll be on a deep sale, like at least 50% off!
I also like the complete effort that they put into this; obviously there is a lot of love and care. At the same time I'm looking for a cheaper price point by about $15 Canadian Dollars...
Upon hearing the music from Sonic Jam, I wish they had included the actual 3-d stage from the Saturn version (or at least "modernized"), where low-poly Sonic can run around and look for the classic games to play.
Great video guys! And well done, SaveDex! Well I need to go hear these new tracks and see what they're like. S&K is my all-time favorite Sonic game so seeing no option to play it seperate is a bit disappointing. But these are definitely classic Sonic games and I think objectively the best ones of the franchise.
As much as was excited to replay the collection, my biggest drawbacks is that pricetag for 4 games alittle overpriced. I wish Knuckles Chaotix, 3d blast, and spinball was on there *I mean the soundtracks for those games are in the collection*. P.S. whomever bought the collection that in the comment section, I have a quick question, did anyone notice that some of music from 3D blast and Knuckles Chaotix don't the match their name???
I too wish spinball was included. I only noticed an annoying audio glitch.. the function they added to each game that spins n rolls, it sometimes doesn't cut off and it keeps going. I bought the deluxe version and the soundtrack player is definitely sweet
My biggest bugbear was the price, but I’ve just grabbed the Deluxe edition for £18, that seems far easier to swallow for games I’ve bought and played many times before!!
6:53 Even with some of the bugs probably squashed in future patches, I still can't give this game a full score due to some missing Genesis tracks in Sonic 3 (the new (old) tracks feel like placeholders and sound too Game Gear-ish for my taste) and even more baffling is the fact that the MJ composers are still listed in the end credits despite the former. (Here's the silver lining though: the original JP opening track for Sonic CD called You Can Do Anything, which is missing the vocal in the 2011 version due to music licensing issues at the time, has been fully restored in Sonic Origins!)
I’m looking forward to this for the animations and sonic and knuckles/sonic 3. Insane that Sonic is my age now. Only thing I’m sad about is no physical.
Not sure if this only affects the Nintendo versions, but the entire soundtrack is a bit glitchy (occasional stuttering when the screen is busy, e.g. the bonus stages in Sonic 1), and severely lacking in low-end frequencies (when compared to the games running on an OG mega drive through the same sound system). This was something that affected Streets of Rage 4 on the Switch as well, so possibly due to the compression used for audio files? Except Animal Crossing doesn't suffer this problem at all, with a number of tracks really putting my subwoofer to work.
I love your reviews, so great! But the 30fs capture really kills some of your reviews... I wish all the reviews were all consistent; Mark's reviews tend to be 60fps (bar this one), the others not so much. Keep up the great work, but if you are able to at all, please invest some of that ad revenue into better capture, it would completely aid in that synesthesia ;) I totally would if it were me! :D :D :D
Yeah to be fair, I think perhaps the 30fps was just left on Glen's edit from another video. I agree, if the game is 60fps then we generally release a video that is 60fps. Just slipped through this time. Mark

I've got everything out of the museum using the coins, so now what is the point in collecting the coins? I've only played each game once too. I don't think that was very well thought through.
Just because of the missing music in Sonic 3 I won't be buying it i think. I saw a video of the music that's missing and what replaced it and it's really not that good imo.

Bought this as it's going to be my first time playing Sonic 3 and Knuckles. I've only really played a little of 2, so the value was there for me. But I understand why others may see the price as being too high.
Sadly, you would have had the best experience with the Angel Island Revisted mod, though I believe Sega have pulled the original Sonic 3 and Knuckles from the shelves.
I had a Sonic collection of the same games back on GameCube. It has all the music. I paid $15 for it used. I agree, Sonic 1 without the spin dash kind of drags.
biggest knocks no Amy,option for speed dash or drop dash should be in options,I thought gameplay would be faster and more like sonic mania gameplay they didn’t remaster the zones like in sonic mania could of looked real nice and no option to switch between characters like in encore mode sonic mania besides that I love it gameplay is still smooth jumps super smooth
I was really looking forward to this one but the pricing is crazy. Most people have already bought these multiple times on multiple systems. I would love to have these games in this sort of quality on the Switch but not at this price. Quite happy to go back to Sonic Mania for now while they get a bit more realistic with the price. Are they trying to upset their audience?? They would sell a lot more with a bit of a rethink.

It seems this game is favoured more by Console Players. I bought it on PC and the MJ music not being in Sonic 3 (or Sonic 3 and Knuckles) is a genuine heavy loss to me. I played these games when they originally launched on Mega Drive and the new music just killed it. Thank God for modders but still. A shame the Game Gear Sonic games weren't included here like with the Mega Collection and Mega Collection Plus but heh we're talking about Sega here after all.

50 bones (CAD) is a little much for this. I'll wishlist it and pick it up once I see it under $25. Love Sonic but this is too little for that price point.

There not 💯 accurate , the retro engine used causes some inaccuracies with physics and momentum problems, plus some new glitches that where never present in the original releases.

The sega collection which released forever ago had sonic 1, 2, and pinball on it. So is this quality any diff than the ones in that collection? Im glad they finally put sonic 3 and cd on something though
The versions in this collection are based on the mobile ports Christian Whitehead developed. There's a bunch of quality of life features like native widescreen and adding the spin dash/drop dash/additional characters to the earlier games. Aside from the issues with music in S3&K, these are arguably the best versions of the 16bit games. Swapping out the music is, imo, an acceptable compromise when the alternative is to continue memory-holing S3&K like they've been doing since Jackson's death. This collection is a little expensive, but I'd rather pay a bit more for proper ports/emulation as opposed to a half-assed, poorly optimized rom collection (looking at you, Mega Man/X collections)
@@simplemindedsage It’s a shame they cheaped out and used audio recordings of the original soundtracks, rather than creating a proper sound engine that would emulate the Mega Drive’s original sound chip. That way, they could speed the tempo up (when Sonic hits a speed box) in a more natural way. Instead, what you get is a digitally sped-up tune (by slicing it into strips and then removing every other slice), which sounds really weird.
No, Michael Jackson did not actually make music for Sonic 3. Some of his producers did, mainly Brad Buxer it appears. Buxer reused the then unreleased track "Hard Times" from his band "The Jetzons" for Ice Cap Zone. And he also composed the Sonic 3 ending theme, which he later reworked into "Stranger in Moscow" for Jackson.
Yeah the cost is the big thing for me and(while is doesn't seem too much extra) the fact you have to pay extra for the "fun pass"... I sound like an grumpy old cheap skate but IMO everything should be part of one package and Sega's crappy chart on the SO website ticked me off somewhat(Oh crap I've turned.....middle Aged...…..). Also we have been buying these games for so many years, some with some cool feature with aren't in this like the rewind feature from the MegaDrive collection. Saying that...the boy is absolutely desperate for this because of the Movies and the youtube personalities...*shudder*. He really wants to play Sonic 3 and because I'm a numpty that lent my very original MD with about 50 games to a "friend" and never heard from that...friend again this is probably the only way short of shadiness. Great review as always though chaps. P.S...…..Mario has always been and always will be superior to Sonic in every way. SNES4life! P.P.S I'm sorry.
Lads, I am absolutely loving origins. I love the challenges, anniversary mode, mirror mode...I have double dipped on ps5 and switch (to platinum and on the go.) I reckon dlc will come with sonic and knuckles and sonic pinball , although that may be a sonic origins 2 game (like capcom are doing with capcom arcade). Great music remixes in it and live the museum videos and artwork. It's pricey but well worth it. Speed runners paradise. Sega still don't get it though...dump the 3d. Just a release an amazing new 2d adventure with retro graphics and modern special effects. We live in a golden retro remake age..
Sonic & Knuckles is included in Sonic Origins, as part of Sonic 3, where it belongs. Sonic & Knuckles was originally "Sonic 3 Part 2" and its original cartridge release came with the famous "lock-on" feature that allowed to play as Knuckles in Sonic 2, as well as combine the game with Sonic 3 to form the full game as it was intended, "Sonic 3 & Knuckles". Also, Sonic works very well in 3D when done right, like in Generations for example. There's no need to "dump" one game style for the other when you can have both.

Any problems or bugs noticed? The issue has been reported by the developers themselves, but no reviews mention it.
Only the sound bug with Tails. Nothing more during our play throughs.

It certainly is a candidate for the throne. Hence the huge rivalry between Mario and Sonic for almost 40 years.

50 bones (CAD) is a little much for this. I'll wishlist it and pick it up once I see it under $25. Love Sonic but this is too little for that price point.

Never been a fan of Sonic, but it’s nice to have more options for the people that like the games.
Just for the removal of the original ice cap songs, I would NEVER buy this ! ( or for 10 euros max.)
37 for 4 sonic games with some eye candy 🥶 yeah for tenner this would be a nice thing to grab. Meanwhile mega man/contra/ Konami bundles all around of fiver with sales, big skip

There not 💯 accurate , the retro engine used causes some inaccuracies with physics and momentum problems, plus some new glitches that where never present in the original releases.

The sega collection which released forever ago had sonic 1, 2, and pinball on it. So is this quality any diff than the ones in that collection? Im glad they finally put sonic 3 and cd on something though
The versions in this collection are based on the mobile ports Christian Whitehead developed. There's a bunch of quality of life features like native widescreen and adding the spin dash/drop dash/additional characters to the earlier games.
Aside from the issues with music in S3&K, these are arguably the best versions of the 16bit games. Swapping out the music is, imo, an acceptable compromise when the alternative is to continue memory-holing S3&K like they've been doing since Jackson's death.
This collection is a little expensive, but I'd rather pay a bit more for proper ports/emulation as opposed to a half-assed, poorly optimized rom collection (looking at you, Mega Man/X collections)
@@simplemindedsage It’s a shame they cheaped out and used audio recordings of the original soundtracks, rather than creating a proper sound engine that would emulate the Mega Drive’s original sound chip. That way, they could speed the tempo up (when Sonic hits a speed box) in a more natural way. Instead, what you get is a digitally sped-up tune (by slicing it into strips and then removing every other slice), which sounds really weird.

No, Michael Jackson did not actually make music for Sonic 3. Some of his producers did, mainly Brad Buxer it appears. Buxer reused the then unreleased track "Hard Times" from his band "The Jetzons" for Ice Cap Zone. And he also composed the Sonic 3 ending theme, which he later reworked into "Stranger in Moscow" for Jackson.

Yeah the cost is the big thing for me and(while is doesn't seem too much extra) the fact you have to pay extra for the "fun pass"... I sound like an grumpy old cheap skate but IMO everything should be part of one package and Sega's crappy chart on the SO website ticked me off somewhat(Oh crap I've turned.....middle Aged...…..).
Also we have been buying these games for so many years, some with some cool feature with aren't in this like the rewind feature from the MegaDrive collection. Saying that...the boy is absolutely desperate for this because of the Movies and the youtube personalities...*shudder*.
He really wants to play Sonic 3 and because I'm a numpty that lent my very original MD with about 50 games to a "friend" and never heard from that...friend again this is probably the only way short of shadiness.

Lads, I am absolutely loving origins. I love the challenges, anniversary mode, mirror mode...I have double dipped on ps5 and switch (to platinum and on the go.)
I reckon dlc will come with sonic and knuckles and sonic pinball , although that may be a sonic origins 2 game (like capcom are doing with capcom arcade).
Great music remixes in it and live the museum videos and artwork. It's pricey but well worth it. Speed runners paradise.
Sega still don't get it though...dump the 3d. Just a release an amazing new 2d adventure with retro graphics and modern special effects. We live in a golden retro remake age..

Sonic & Knuckles is included in Sonic Origins, as part of Sonic 3, where it belongs. Sonic & Knuckles was originally "Sonic 3 Part 2" and its original cartridge release came with the famous "lock-on" feature that allowed to play as Knuckles in Sonic 2, as well as combine the game with Sonic 3 to form the full game as it was intended, "Sonic 3 & Knuckles".
Also, Sonic works very well in 3D when done right, like in Generations for example. There's no need to "dump" one game style for the other when you can have both.
