Slavery In Islam | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • The Quran discusses slavery at length, and though it recommends freeing slaves and sets limits in terms of how the enslaved are treated, it doesn’t actually prohibit slavery. Slavery was a normal part of life in Arabia, and was practiced for centuries afterwards. But slavery as it was practiced was somewhat different from what we know of slavery in America. In some circumstances, for example, slaves could earn money or inherit or gain power or influence over others. How do we understand the practice of slavery in Muslim societies? Does Islam support slavery? Join Dr. Shabir Ally for part 1 of this discussion!

I’ve become interested lately about slavery in Islam. I am a Muslim, an imperfect and struggling one, and i my opinion, I think we should start admitting that early muslims contributed to making slavery a widespread problem in the past. But Before anything else, Islam was the only religion that gave some rights to slaves as evidenced by written verses from the Quran. Verses about treating slaves humanely. And yes these werent practiced by most of the Muslims but it didnt mean that the religion promotes it. You can only enslave a non-muslim prisoner of war, instead of killing him. But it comes with terms like you need to treat him humanely, clothe him and feed him with the same food you eat. Not giving him a workload that he couldnt endure. Honoring a contract if he asks for it etc. And we shouldnt forget that Islam primarily promotes freeing of slaves. That Allah loves a muslim who could free a slave. There are a lot of verses about that. Islam even promotes marrying a slave and giving her Freedom as your mahar. But again we should admit to our past mistakes. Early arabs were one of those who turned slavery into business. They bought slaves from Africa mostly and sold it to middle eastern countries, even to pilgrims in Makkah. We shouldnt be afraid to admit that these things happened, not because of our religion but because muslims didnt understand their religion, it breaks my heart because as much as i love my religion, I couldnt stand hearing the sheikhs being defensive all the time of Islam instead of admitting our past mistakes.

He said: “ Yes so treat them kindly as you treat your children and feed them what you eat.”
Musnad Imam Ahmed bin hambal page 64-65 verse 75

But note that we are talking about alms, you do the minimum to help a slave, something close to 2.5% of your income, the Qoran does not instigate a massive struggle in search of the abolition of slavery, the Qoran recommends the minimum to help a slave. This is silly because this can make you buy more slaves so you can sin more. By buying, you'll encourage the making of more slaves. So it will raise slavery and the practice of sin (haram).
Then, others will pretend to be slaves to be freed and earned money. Slave traders will make more slaves and get rich while Muslims will commit more sins (haram) and get poorer.

I think the issue is this: There were 17 to 19 million African slaves traded in the Islamic Slave Trade, which legally ended in 1962 in some countries. Muhammad owed Black slaves and is said to have impregnated one. Muhammad is said to have said that Satan looked like a Black man. One of the reasons why the Islamic Slave Trade didn't end earlier is because leaders said the Quran didn't forbid it. Castration of African slaves was a common practice and many captives transported died on route. Baghdad, Iraq is the first African Slave Revolt documented due to the harsh oppressive treatment of the captives. So, Dr. Shabir can share what various texts say... but statistically speaking, the actions of many ignore the text and follow the example set. This led to many Africans being enslaved because of the lack of value placed on their lives.

    • @Handle0108

Zakariya Jama i understand but that is the end goal of the servitude. The Islamic servitude is in no way similar to the non-muslim idea of slavery that we all have ingrained into our heads. Firstly, the servant already has some rights and he/she is considered a human that can stand before law so doing an unlawful/inhuman act against them is punished like everyone else. Secondly, there are proper mechanisms/systems in place for a servant to eventually get their full rights.
If you look into history, this is why there are so many former servants who have risen to very high ranks and freedom because there is actually a pathway to freedom and full integration. You need only to look back to the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt which comprised of primarily former servants who became kings over the Muslims world in the Middle East. Could you imagine freed slaves establishing a government in the US and ruling over the whites in the 1800s, and yet that is exactly what happened in Egypt.

    How Islam moderated slavery
Islam's approach to slavery added the idea that freedom was the natural state of affairs for human beings and in line with this it limited the opportunities to enslave people, commended the freeing of slaves and regulated the way slaves were treated:
Islam greatly limited those who could be enslaved and under what circumstances (although these restrictions were often evaded)
Islam treated slaves as human beings as well as property
Islam banned the mistreatment of slaves - indeed the tradition repeatedly stresses the importance of treating slaves with kindness and compassion
Islam allowed slaves to achieve their freedom and made freeing slaves a virtuous act
Islam barred Muslims from enslaving other Muslims
But the essential nature of slavery remained the same under Islam, as elsewhere. It involved serious breaches of human rights and however well they were treated, the slaves still had restricted freedom; and, when the law was not obeyed, their lives could be very unpleasant.

He said: “Yes so treat them kindly as you treat your children and feed them from what you eat.”
Musnad Imam Ahmed bin hambal page 64-65 verse 75

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. (Eph. 6:5) Masters treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him. (Eph.6:9) Were you a bondservant when called? Do not be concerned about it. (But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity.) (1 Cor. 7:21)

Mentioned in 25 different verses. So it reflects the time it’s written in. Strange that allah wouldn’t recite something that is irrelevant of time and space knowing where man has been and will end up Almost as if someone who lived in that time wrote it. Even permits sexual relations with your slave. Very god-like! Why didn’t the Quran abolish it? Great question.

As an Orthodox-Christian, I've no problem with slavery in general, because we have a certain form of slavery in the Bible as well, and I'm not talking about servitude, however the idea of slave-trading and sex-slavery in particular are absolutely unjustifiable, especially in case of sex-slavery which is basically adultery, so the Islamic slavery is a huge problem.

I suspect by "Father" you're talking about the holy trinity. Islam recognises neither the trinity nor the divinity of Christ as valid. Scripturally, the Quran explained that God does not and would not have a son in any case, and explicitly denounces the trinity. That is why we do not worship "the father", the spirit, the holy ghost or Christ, only Allah.

My dear neice & nephew, while that TH-cam video correctly defined how Slavery is dealt with in Islam, it did not show the difference between Slavery (an embarrassing & sometimes a humiliating form of indentured servitude), as practiced in most of the world (then & now) & what was brutally employed throughout the Americas, that is North/Central/South America & the Caribbean basin, otherwise known as or defined as Chattel Slavery! Why this distinction was omitted, I cannot say but I felt you should know the difference between what was said, as opposed to what should have been said.
As always, as far as the subject of Islam is concerned, I want you to know what is Islam & what is not Islam … what you decide to do about that information is up to you!
Please be as safe as you can & know that I love you very much!

The problem starts when people think that Islam has given us the concept of slavery, but in reality, it was already there and considered a normal thing but if you look at all the rules and regulations that Islam has given about slavery, we can clearly see that Islam came to abolish slavery because, in the presence of these principles, slavery Couldn't stay long.

don’t you suppose that the way to capture a “potential” slave haram in islam. Like you suppose the way a muslim/arab captured slaves were in a humane way? Like think abt an african man taken/kidnapped or even abused into the slave trade just to be forced into lack of water whist walking barefoot across extremely hot terrains whilst their captors who are muslim/arabs sit atop their sheltered camel ride. The concept of slavery was to degrade the opposition. Like why does islam not speak about the fall african societies and civilisations due to slavery and not solve the route of the problem
