My father was a US History teacher, he had great respect for the Ohio Native tribes (especially the Erie, who were wiped out by the Iroquois but their legacy in the Cleveland area is still felt today). This was the last movie we saw before he died...I am grateful we shared it together. The soundtrack, along with everything else, is superb.

    • @dongilleo9743

I would suggest that Magua, like the best of villains, doesn't see himself as a villain or even particularly evil. He sees himself as the victim, first of the British who would cost him his family, then betrayed in his quest for justice and revenge by the French, and finally robbed and cheated of his deserved respect and glory by the tribal elder. In his eyes he was the one who was always being treated badly.
In one way you could argue that the real villains of the movie are the English and French, who think nothing of using, abusing, and exploiting the native Americans, and to some extent the American colonists, up to the point of getting them killed fighting as expendable pawns in a war between European powers far away.

One of my all time favs. As a young Marine stationed on Okinawa in 1993 my roommate had the soundtrack and I swear he would play it everyday. One day I asked what was that and he told me it was the soundtrack to this movie. Later on One my recruiter who I ran into at Kadena invited me over to his house to meet his family. We ate dinner and then he put this movie on laser disc he had (original big laser disc). And I’ve never been the same.

Like Dances with Wolves, this is a fantastic tribute to classic film making, with a broad story and a history, a script and cast whose commitment to their art is not in any way compromised by money or commercialism. Both these films for me are a testament to the dedication of the filmmakers who fought to bring these to the public forum. As for the music in both films, I shall never underestimate the sheer brilliance of these people who can so perfectly punctuate the filmmakers art and who bring an emotion to the vision.

Yeah, Wes Studi was a terrific actor. I complimented him on FaceBook several years ago and he thanked me. I was scared shitless of Wes Studi after watching this movie. I would never have dared to cross him in real life. He came across as a human Cuisinart, slicing and dicing his way through enemies and victims. I was more relieved, not overjoyed, when Russell Means' father character finally kills Magua at the end putting an end to the heinous evil stalking the frontier lands.

One of the greatest films of all time. Each character seemed so real like they could live down the street from u. U cared what happened to them especially because u knew no one was safe. Meaning anyone could be killed at any time. And even though Magua was a cold hearted MF’er, u could relate to him cause of what he’d been through and what was taken from him.

Thank you, GreatFilm. The fact that so many of the best moments in this beautiful, exiting and romantic classic, occur wordlessly, should be a clear sign to filmmakers the power of the uniquely visual and audial experience movies can be - entertaining for those who crave it, educational for those who seek it, and inspiring for everyone who beholds it. The entire scene at the end has everything a climactic scene should have, and all you have are the actors, costumes, scenery and score - no speeches, monologues, or declarations, the only thing that was left was to choose and to act. Real life doesn’t happen in speeches, but in actions, consequences and accountability - and much of it wordless. Michael Mann never gets the accolades due him and the entire production team and performers, for achieving a true Adventure film. It is surely one of the top few films of that decade and I think it is right at home among the top films of all time - well, it is for me, at least. The majesty and beauty of the locations alone is enough to compel repeated viewings.

I'm 22 now, but my dad let my brother and I watch this when we were little kids, best decision he ever made. I was lucky to have a dad that exposed these type of movies to us when we were young including troy, braveheart, we were soldiers, saving private ryan, black hawk down, wind talkers, the patriot, and other action packed films.

I always thought a prequel type movie showing Magua’s perspective would have been interesting....seeing him lose his family and how he became so angry. He was awesome in this movie though.....they all were, and the music and cinematography were amazing as well. Rare when one movie works on so many levels.
