Thanks Terry! I spent 30 mins spinning the top of the stopper but it wouldn't come out. I was making progress but never could get it all the way out. Frustrating. Then I thought there had to be a trick so I went straight to TH-cam. I had to put a needle nose pliers under the silver cap of the stopper to hold it while I turned the sliver cap/top off. Once the cap was off I saw the brass screw hidden under it .....now I'm home free. Thanks again!!

For all you folks who can't get the top cap unscrewed, try turning it backwards. A lot of plumbing stuff is threaded backwards.. A bit of common thought tells ya; if it don't go one way, try the other. I viewed Terry's video and it was a BIG HELP to me. I've got the tub emptying and will go get a new drain valve when I can. No baths for a few days, but showers can still happen. No biggie! Thanks Terry !!

I followed the video instructions and it worked fine to replace (not repair) a broken drain. It took 5 minutes. However, you do need the correct tools to make it that easy. A special device to help unscrew the old broken drain (by friction) and a different tool to make it easy to snugly tighten the new drain without scratching it. My wife thought it would take hours. With the time I saved, I am going to have a couple beers.

My stopper (toe touch) seems to have a different design. I couldn’t unscrew the cap. It doesn’t seem to be screwable. But I was able to unscrew the whole stopper as one piece with a big plier. There is a screw at the bottom of the stopper assembly. Basically, the whole stopper was sitting on a screw. It was very tight and took me a while to unscrew the whole thing. Anyway, just want to share my experience as it might be helpful for some people.

    • @paulgorsky5517

I realize that this is an old post but for the rest of you folks out there... If you use needlenose plyers and slide them under the rubber washer, you should be able to hold the plastic stem from turning as you unscrew the cap.

[the spring/screw had shortened to the point it wouldnt catch the drain.]
Soon as I saw this video, I fixed it within 30 seconds. By taking the top off, and giving that flat screw a couple twists.

To keep this in place in the proper adjustment height, use a little Teflon plumbers tape. That way every time your foot hits the drain you don't loose your adjusted height. This also allows you to put the gasket on the metal part where it doesn't flip the wrong way. If I put the gasket where it belongs it just inverts. Thank You for the video

  • @digittunzzrecordsllc

try pulling on the silver top piece and turning counter clockwise sometimes the whole stopper comes out from bottom of drain which is fine because you can now turn the top outside of drain using rubber lined gloves for gripping as to create tention enough to loosen the top in order to expose the screw undernieth

I was having trouble getting the silver top off but I used a pair of needle-nose pliers to stabilize the white plastic part while twisting the silver top - that worked. NOTE: if the screw is locked up (seized) by gunk something that helped me was putting baking soda down the drain then pouring in distilled white vinegar - on my second tub that didn't quite do the job so I poured a little boiling hot water down after the baking soda and vinegar which did the trick. Darn that shower grime! Disgusting.
    Good luck everyone!

I should have looked this up weeks ago and saved myself a lot of frustration from prograstination. The part itself is an easy replace.
