- This video is a step by step instruction on how to replace a bathtub drain.
If your tub begins to drain slowly or stops draining completely, it has probably become blocked by something. If chemicals don’t help, you will need to remove the drain and unblock it yourself. And you might need to remove the old drain to replace it with a new one.
Of course, you can call in a professional plumber, like us at Maple Ridge Plumber to do it for you. However, removing a drain is a rather simple task, and you might be able to DIY.
That is why we complied a video for you, showing you exactly how it is done in a step by step tutorial!

Hello I know this video is from 6 years ago, but I wanted to let you know that I just changed out my tub stopper following your instructions! Just wanted to say thank you 😊!!
I'm about change mine this weekend. That's why I'm watching now.
1:52 Good video except for the fact you did not replace the gasket. Yeah, you might get by without it, but why take a chance when it will only take another minute or so to replace.
Your video is amazing
He explained that was for the underside of the tub.

I had a plumber in to replace a couple of sinks and toilets. I asked him about the drain. He said it was a big job as he would have to 'remove the entire bathtub to do it'. I now realize he just didn't want to be bothered. What a BS artist! Thanks for the easy to follow video. You're one of the good guys! ♥🇨🇦
Not all tubs and drains are the same, his just so happen to be a easy universal one. Some you have to go in the basement and find the water drain lines etc.
This video saved me a ton of money. I spent $10 for the barbell drain removal tool and $19.99 for the bathtub drain. Thank you!
Me, too, and I'm a girl! Super easy after watching the video!
Just switched from the old lever drain stop to the touch toe drain stop. I have never done a drain related job before I always got a plumber and never gave it a second thought. I just saved roughly $100 as I was quoted $140 by a local plumber. Take care of yourselves everybody
Great video!!!
You always have to pressure test the drain for any leaks in the shoe pipe underneath. Never take it for granted that your plumbers putty is holding up. Remember one drip equals a leak
We absolutely hate our toe pop up drain. We want a regular
Thank you for your step-by-step video. I was able to replace mine in 10 minutes and saved $357.00. And I am not the most mechanical person.
Thank you again! I even took pics.
quick and easy. no wasted time with backstory or other fluff. great stuff, thanks so much!
My mother is 90 and lives in another state. Her bathtub drain was leaking water so she called a plumber and he replaced the bathtub drain like you just did and the bill totaled $285.00. Thank you for posting this informative video.
Just what I got quoted. Waiting for the plumber right now. I'm nervous doing it by myself because of the washer. Some say you have to place it under the tub or theres gonna be a leak. He just didnt use it at all. Why???
@@nakkohmt8978 There already is a washer under the tub. That one stays in place, it doesn't get removed. The only reason you'd mess with that is if it was leaking. He was just replacing the drain in the video, there was no leak.
Thank you for posting such a simple and easy to follow video. A quick trip to the hardware store and literally 5 minutes later pop up tub drain is fixed. I can’t thank you enough!!
As someone that recently started doing handyman's work around the house, this was really helpful. Thank you so much!
I was worried when ours went out, but I had it fixed in no time. Thank you from all TH-cam warriors.
The one extra tool I needed was a “tub drain extractor” as ours was too corroded to use the wrench to turn it out.
-Hope that helps someone in the future!
Im glad you mentioned the rubber gasket cause I wasn't sure if I needed to replace mine or not. Thank You!
This was so helpful. My first DIY plumber repair was a success thanks to this simple video.
Made it easy to change the drain and save some money. Literally took 5 mins. Good info, thanks!
Well done. Thanks for the short, to-the-point instructions. I already have a money pit in this 80-year old house! Need to find as many price cuts as necessary.
It doesn’t work like this in reality A lot of the time. If the drain cracks underneath the tub, you got to get your tub out to redo the piping, or open up the ceiling underneath the bathtub for access. Be very very careful.
His video is a little too simple!!
@@Flowing23 that's my fear
Tried to use the barbell removal tool for the replacement on my drain and had to look for a drain key-type tool instead. Wound up getting a Tub Drain Extractor to take the old drain out. As far as presentation - this was a great video for showing the process of replacing a drain. I had to look up additional help for replacing an older, corroded drain. Perhaps a 2.0 to include some variables you'll run into? Thanks for the video Maple Ridge Plumber!
Dint get wooondid there dijya' ;)? Maple rij gud wurk!👏
Just completed this after watching your video. Always wondered what wrench you used to get that drain out. Now I’m an official owner of a barbell tub tool. LOL You saved me time and $. Thank you!
I am so jazzed that I replaced this myself with the wonderful video that I'm going to try replacing a sink faucet next.
Thank you so much for this video! You saved me hundreds of dollars! I was able to complete this job in 10 minutes! My wife was seriously impressed! So easy!
Great video! Simple instructions and guidance. I had no idea on how to replace my bathtub drain. After watching this video, I went to Lowe's and grab the right tools and did the job in under 10 minutes. Thank you!
you are a lifesaver. Sho hard for the non-plumber to know what tools are necessary for a simple repair.
Thanks for your help, I initially left the washer there and then noticed that the drain sits too high and a ring of water sits there, I took the washer out and now it's perfect. Thank you!
Good to know - I'm going to try this. It holds water but sits a little high. Thanks.
Have used the this video in the past with great success, but this time I struggled for a half an hour until I realized there were two sizes of pipe fitting screwed into one another and the larger one would never fit my drain!🤣. Next time it’ll only take five minutes! Thank you for the concise and confidence-building video!
Just wanted yo say a massive thanks to you for the video. Just finished the job in about 15 minutes and cost me 50 bucks in total.
For whatever reason our plumber told use we need to remove the whole tub to install this lol I’m just going to do it myself! Thanks for the instruction video
That’s what’s called a “refusal excuse” lol
He didn’t want to do it, he just didn’t want to say that outright and seem lazy so he gave you an excuse that he hoped you’d believe.
Just followed this step by step and it literally took me 5 minutes. Great job explaining the process.
Last time I did it exactly as was shown:
the old drain pipe cracked beneath the drain
and it turned out to be great fun
- a pipe replacement project.
My plumber refused to do it for my old bathtub for this reason
So grateful for hot guys who make diy tutorials! I can totally do this 💪
Ahhhh teaching. The gift that keeps on giving. Thank you.
Long-haired lady that used a cheap, plastic, barbed hair removal tool and some of it broke off into the drain. I need to remove this drain 🤦🏾♀️This helps so much. 🙌🏾
I friggin love this. I am going to do this tomorrow. The instructions you gave are very and straight forward. If all goes well I will be back with my happy dance
Bought tub tool to remove drain. For harder to remove drain use a 14" monkey wrench to get more leverage so that puppy will turn. Thanks for your video. It helped me a lot.
Great instructions. I would have messed this project up big time without your video. Thanks!
Thanks so much man! I was able to get it done myself and I am nowhere near a professional. You made it too easy.
Awesome video. I watched it one time and did both my tub drains. The only hard part was the initial twist off of the drain. But once you get it moving, it should only take you five minutes to complete this job. THANK YOU!!!
This is good Last night in my Home I heard water dripping ,so I crawled under my home to discover the tube drain was leaking, I now have the confidence to fix it myself , Great video Thanks my man ...
This video was super straight forward and to the point. Also, very helpful. Exactly the type of info I was looking for. Thank you for putting this out.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It was exactly what I was looking for 💜
1.3 M views for a channel with less than 5k subs! Nice job! I just used this to refresh myself on a reinstallation! Easy to follow!
Great video...I'll add that I have usually run across the old dried up plumbers puddy from the prior drain. I take my time doing a good job of cleaning that out and making sure there are not chunks in the drain hole.
How tight should you tighten it at the end? Don’t know when to stop turning
I can’t believe it truly was as easy as you made it out to be! Thank you so much for this video!
thank you sir! You are the real MVP for homeowners everywhere!
Thank you so much for the video. I was scared to touch it didn't want to break or cause leaks but now I feel confident
thank you for the video... i am going to get the parts and fix my tub tomorrow...all the parts were $38 .... thank you
SUCCESS... I replaced the tub drain and I am ready to become a plumber.... thankyou again for the video...saved me a couple hundred dollars
Wonderful video. I changed mine following this video in less than 20 minutes.
First video that came up, and you're from my hometown! Wild.
Great video too thank you :)
Fantastic. I am handy man but never done this before. Excellent explanation.
That looked incredibly easy! I'm going to give it a go!
great video. I needed to make sure I didn't need the gasket that came with the new setup.
I needed to remove the lever and plug assembly. It fought a little but it finally came out.
thanks again for taking your time to make the video.
Nice video, short & sweet! Thought bathtub drain replacement is close to rocket engineering and wouldn't mind paying $200 to get it fixed by a plumber. This video made me do the job for $11 (price for the barbell tub tool). Well thanks! 😎
Awesome I'm going to try this today on soaking tub drain pop up.Thanks for the breakdown. Will update
The best video by far I've found on this fix. Very concise and explained all the key points very well. Just wish I hadn't wasted so much time on all the other people trying to explain it, leaving out key info. Helped me fix my neighbors drain, she couldn't afford a plumber. So thanks!
Thanks so much. Because It broke off and tub drain wrench is the best ... What size drain stopper is that .
What about if I have a leak from there should I put that gasket that comes with the part. Thanks have a Bless day.
Thank you. The hard water in our city has made our drains look awful. We're going to do this this weekend!
Thank you. I looked at your video to inquire about the washer. Perfect explanation.
Thank you so much for this video! I just successfully replaced my drain all by myself!!!
Thanks so much for such a clear, easy-to-follow vid.
Great instructions - Replaced mine today exactly as decscibed
I have now learned about the tub wrench tool to remove the grain. The video shows a drain with 4 supports that the tool lines up with. My drain only has three support spokes, not four, and I do not think it will line up with the tool. Are there tub wrenches that will work with my drain?
Just one of a number of projects I will undertake. The tub drain is rusted a bit so there's work to be done. I tend to watch many of these vids.
Thanks for the instructional video. You should consider adding affiliate links for the tools used.
Hey, thanks for all the chips and scratches in the paint job on my tub
Great video. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.
Thank you, sir. I had to use a pipe wrench along with the drain wrench to get the old drain out. Worked great.
So glad I found this video! Thanks so much for sharing. You saved me time and money: 🤩👍🏼
Thank you so much! Pregnant lady over here and I am so glad I can just order a few things off Amazon and do this myself rather than calling a plumber.
Queen
That was great.. long story short I pulled the drain to check for depth. I have to buy a waterless trap due to there being no conventional tap currently installed. I was then left with a leak and the same odor coming up that I had intended to fix with the waterless trap. I'm going to attempt to tighten the snot out of the drain to at least get rid of the leak, and maybe buy some plumbers putty if i need to. Thank you very much!
Great video. I wish all drains unscrewed that easily 🫤. Usually by the time the drain is ready to replace, that thing requires major torque to get out.
Mine was so stuck almost gave up. Poured boiling water on it though and immediately started turning.
Very good video. Now my tub is fixed. Thank you so much.
Very well explained and very professional. Easy to see you really know your job well. Great teacher. Just what I needed to take on my own job. Last video I watched took 15 minutes to tell me much less than you did in 5 minutes.
Thank you buddy! Was dreading this job. It's actually very easy. God bless!
Thank you! I just changed my drain it was nice and easy. Though it felt like a deadlock before i saw your video
I typically avoid any plumbing work that isn't exterior to a wall, such as a shutoff valve, and I am absolute trash at brazing/soldering copper. This task, however, looks like something I can manage. Nice tutorial.
What if the water takes too long to drain. Do I need to fix the pipe first or just the drain?
Great video thanks for sharing your knowledge on this plumbing repair
I went to put in my new drain and there was a white silicone type gasket in there. Should I still add plumbers putty or just reuse the gasket? Great video!
if it is a metal drain, use plumbers putty. plumbers putty is always recommended for metal
Just followed these directions and was pretty simple. Thank you for the video!
Answered my question, good video. Now I find out if it comes out so easy after 53 years!
Perfect walk through. It helped me complete this project.
How long we Wight before we use the tub after installing the new Drain?
Shot in the dark, but question for you. The new flange is sitting too high (measured the previous and it’s the same depth) and I see the plumbers putter in the gap between the tub and hardware. I screwed it on very tight, not sure what to do now.
Gracias amigo por El video muy bueno,no tenia idea de como sacar El Viejo, ese es mi siguiente proyecto en este invierno,. Buen dia,.
Thank you for your demo. Now I'm changing mine.
This video is a BEST case scenario and poster should have Cautioned against the many things that can go wrong.
Many will try this and start a plumbing nightmare ...
This based on over 35 yrs in this trade.
well you want to fill us in, or give us a few hints?!
@@seanmcd72 no, he wants us to call him (ie. a plumber) and pay $200 for a 5 minute job.
@@seanmcd72I did have trouble using the tool to get the old drain to start turning. Just poured boiling water on it though and loosened it right up.
Do I need to use plumbers putty if it has a rubber gasket with the drain? Do I use both? Or do I use one or the other?
Nice video, thank you. I would also recommend laying down something protective to preclude dropped tool damage and footprints to tub finish. Also, some thread anti seize to prevent lock up upon drain removal.
Instead of putty, can I use Teflon tape or caulking? Thanks
If the problem was a slow leak of water once full of water, would this tutorial still work?
Hi! what if the old drain doesn't have the cross at the bottom any more? Does the tool still help?
Thanks for video!!! Have a leak what’s looks like coming from drain line coming from drain itself
I’m definitely no plumber but TH-cam University I’m slowing learning 🤪
How do you go about replacing drain underneath it’s in basement
Thanks You
EXCELLENT instructional video! Thank YOU!👍👍
can you tell me where to buy that stopper for a tub brand Jacuzzi, I can't find it or a video for how to install it
Question I went from a trigger to a flat plate and did the toe drain does the flat plate need a gasket behind it?
Just did a tub drain replacement. Well, just tried. First, tub wrench worked on old drain. BUT, it did not fit the new drain! Holes in a new drain from Home Depot required me to file down the four parts of the wrench. THEN, the new drain would not screw into the tub. The old one screwed in and out well, but the new one screwed in easily for several turns, then stopped dead, and I mean no way to turn it, even with tub wrench. As if I cross-threaded it except the first several turns went super-easy and felt correct. Not sure what to do now but return the new drain and try another? Any help? I even greased the threads and cleaned out the tub threads with a wire brush. Thanks.
Good video. Can I use thread tape instead of plumber’s putty?
So you have to go under the shower/tub to replace the whole drain? My master bath shower has been leaking from the drain
Super helpful, sir! Thank you so much!! onto my next project!
Thank you SO much for this! I ruined my drain pop up with corrosive cleaner and it looks awful. I am going to attempt to put in a new one by myself!
Good morning, what replacement did you use? How do we know which one will fit? Thank you for your help!
