Literally had this just happened to me tonight in the hotel.
What worked for me with limited resources in my situation was gently knocking on one side of the drain stopper so that the opposite side will raise up a bit. However instead of using floss to go around the stopper, I used a safety pin to gently pull it up. Thanks for inspiring me to solve the problem :)

MY husband went to mow the yard and said when I am done I will look at the sink but I have no idea what to do. So I found your Video "Getting It Done North of 7" I was so pleased as was he when he came in and found I had the sink all apart and was cleaning out filth. He didn't need a rotter router after all. I also appreciated that you did not do a lot of necessary yacking. Thank you for making an unpleasant chore so much easier. Oh our push down sink plug was not stuck ours was draining slow, very slow. Mate, you’re a life saver. Had to do it slightly different though but pretty much did the wood tapping trick and it worked. Had no piece of wood but used a couple of chopsticks held together and no hammer but a pair of pliers as a hammering substitute. Also, I emptied the sink (had to use a towel to soak up the last of it) but the plug was just jammed in there, so I refilled it with hot water and tried it again, tapping the chopsticks with the side of the pliers aaand bingo, it popped up. Thank you mate, for making this vid. Cheers.

Great video and a great service to everyone with this problem.
    Thanks for posting it.
While these tips didn't work for me, I did get it un stuck.
Note: Mine was stuck hard. There was no turning it.
Here's what worked for me, as nothing else did....
    Pro Tip:
I got a sink plunger The blue one with several ribs on the plunger..... Yep, that's the one.
I pressed it down and then popped it up as quick as I could. The first couple of times it just barely raised the stopper, but after the third time, it popped it up. I then stuck it again to see if it could do it on the first try, and it will. You just have to get a good pop out of it.
Note: While my stopper wouldn't turn at first, after using the plunger to barely pop it up, it probably would have turned from that point on....
What I found was the reason my stopper was sticking is because I had it tightened down all the way on the threads (not tool tight, but hand tight). That was too much for the poor machining tolerances and that caused it to bind when pressed down.
So now I just barely loosen the threads on the stopper and it will open and close no problem.
Now if any of y'all are into bees, head on over to my channel and let's have some more fun.

Thank you so much to the poster! The WD40 and tapping with wooden piece and hammer did the trick within a minute AND as a welcome bonus, I'm thrilled not to feel like a helpless girl 🎉

Guys, this was me-I was truly "drained" (haha) and frustrated! I can't thank this man enough. I live alone in my flat, and after taking a bath, I couldn’t get the plug out of the tub. I ended up having to scoop out all the water and towel-dry the tub. I tried everything: tapping it, using a knife, and even a screwdriver. At one point, I drove 20 minutes just to shower at work!
A day later, I was about to give up, but I decided to try one more time-and it finally came undone! Don’t underestimate the power of the rubber gloves trick-I honestly didn’t think it would work, but it did. Another idea for anyone in the same situation: try using very strong tape, stick it onto the plug, and give it a good pull. It might just save you the hassle! Or try using a suction hook.

Thank you for this video, and thank you all for leaving your comments, sharing your experience. Mine was very stuck. Was discouraged at first, but then seeing others taking the time and patience in doing this, it encouraged me being persistent. It took me about 20 mins, knocking the rim of the stopper with a pair of attached wooden chop sticks and a hammer. It finally popped up a little. It wasn't all the way, so I continued to pray and tapping it, and added more WD40. Then I tried pushing it down a little, then it popped all the way out. Thank you!! Hallelujah!!

thank you so much! That thing was so stuck, it wouldn't move at all. It took WD40, the hammer and stick, then finally it was loose enough to get the dental floss under it and pull it up. I got that sucker out and am throwing it away lol. It is not a pop up one, it was the part that connects to the lever was rusted and had broken off. Very grateful that you took the time to post this.

Sir your video saved me a hefty plumber's fee. Given the nature of my stuck plug, and the fact that I don't have a piece of wood (but am now strongly considering having one in the flat just in case), I went straight for your dental floss solution.

Here's another solution that I just used myself- If you have a floss pick instead of dental floss, you can use pointed end of the pick to slide it through the gap and pop it up a little. Then you should be able to use the floss end to pry it up the rest of the way, though that may take some struggling.

I see this is 3 years old but I just did it and it worked! The way that worked for me was to tap it with the wood (which I didn't have so I used a screwdriver). I noticed that there was more space around some of the stopper so I went to the part that didn't seem to have any space and tapped there until the whole thing seemed evenly spaced around the edges. Then with a rubber glove on, I pressed it a bit and turned counterclockwise (to the left) and it popped up. Thank you so much. 😊

Absolutely amazing! I tried everything online and nothing worked. I used DW40 but didn't have any wood so used a piece of rubber and tapped the plug lightly with a hammer, used the tooth floss which came back with slug on it and used one of the plastic jar openers to unscrew the plug. I pulled out some more slug with a pair of tweezers and the drain ran perfectly. I checked my other bathroom and although the sink drain didn't have a problem I found beard shavings in it so will now check every so often. Thanks so much. You are a wizard. 🥰

I didn't know it worked like a click pen (for some reason I thought it was just a suction mechanism). The mallet/stick version worked like a charm on the first tap. I used a cloth to protect the drain plug from getting scratched.

ABSOLUTE LEGEND!!! I used both the hammer and then dental floss idea. You’re a genius. Thank you. Shocked that this actually worked.

You saved my life! My daughter is away and I decided to deep clean her en suite for her. I have no idea how I managed to get her plug stuck, but with the WD40 ( what did we ever do without it?!) and tapping in it with a wooden spoon and tiny craft hammer- up she popped!

Thank you! ONE ADDITIONAL METHOD TO TRY...Across 2 days I tried all of these methods up to and including dental floss. No luck. Wondered if changing the temperature would help. I filled a sandwich Ziploc with chipped ice and set it directly on top of drain for 20 minutes. Came back and gently touched it and it popped right up. I'm sure the WD40 helped in my case but it had been sitting on it for 2 days and worked down in with tip of razor blade without a result; plug wasn't popping up without a slight constriction from lowering the temperature.

Amazing! Thank you so much. I’ve literally been getting driven crazy by it for 10 days and couldn’t get anyone to come out and it had become a nuisance the last couple of days as the slow down in draining had stopped. The WD40 trick worked for me. I left it a while and then came back with a tiny flat head screwdriver to try and move the rim anti-clockwise and it started to move slowly and then it unscrewed the top of the plug so I sprayed a load more WD40 on the metal projectile in there and then got in there with my pliers and was able to move it and now it moves freely! I’m so happy and couldn’t be more thankful. Thank you so much. Merry Christmas 🎄

Thank you! I’ve released these stupid things before with your stick and hammer trick. Sadly, this time I wasn’t successful and had to come back for more hints. Success! Thank you

    Thank you for this!
The hammer tap method did it for me.
I used a small screwdriver, tapped around the plug and it moved up.
I had to then wiggle it back down with my fingers to release the catch mechanism.
And then I tapped it some more to fully release it

I had to come back here and say thank you. I'm a single woman and have been living alone since my kids left home so it's hard to get someone to help fix things I have to find ways around them. So imagine my excitement when the sink pop up waste popped up a few minutes ago. It's been stuck for years. Probably 5 years. I've been using the bath to wash my face and brush my teeth. Thank you so much I followed each step. I took my rubber mallet and knife sharpner though because I didn't have a piece of wood.

I tried every trick of yours, twice, and was panicking-how could I be the only one these tips weren’t working for?? On the third go-around, finally a little movement turning the cap to the left!! I’m not sure which trick worked or if it was a combo, but WOOHOO! Something did it! I did use the WD40 “Rust Release Penetrant” spray. That stuff is also a life saver-just use a lot and make sure to give it time to work.
Thank you so much, Sir! You saved the day and saved untold money! I won’t forget to pop the drain more often or these fixes if it sticks again! Subscribed!!

So glad I found this video. I tried all 4 techniques. What finally worked was unwaxed dental floss and using my finger nails to wedge the floss under the stopper lip and was able to wrap it around the lip of the stopper a few cd

Thank you so much for this video! For me, the tapping with a hammer on a stick worked. My little boy (nearly five) was watching your video with me, and afterwards we watched some clips from Maverick as he loves watching all the aircraft flying. But after two mins, he said "Dad, can you put the sink man on again"!!! So you are officially more entertaining than Hollywood blockbuster movies and Tom Cruise!!! 🙂

Thank you!! I just put in a brand new Moen sink with a pop up stopper. It would stick right from the start when there was water in the sink. The WD-40 did the trick! I never would have thought of that. I appreciate your video.
