  • How hard is life in prison? We explore the prison regime through the eyes of officers and inmates in Changi’s Maximum-security prison. How does an inmate live in a single-man cell?
In this first episode, we enter a world behind bars to meet the inmates. We follow Graceson, a gangster who manages to get himself a new tattoo in prison and is duly caned for it; Khai, a professional skateboarder who is just coming to terms with the loss of his career; Rusdi who is counting down to his release in 50 days using packets of snacks; And Boon Keng gets into trouble for keeping origami in his cell during a cell search.

The difference I notice is the guards truly have control of the prison opposed to how inmates in America “run” the prison

Remember though that the prison authority, governers and Singapore government will have control over all of the access to the documentary makers and almost certainly the final edit.

I have also noticed how it's still an effective rehabilitation hotel as opposed to African prisons.. if it wasn't about business. If America want to cut down on crime they should gave treaties with African States and send their prisoners ther. Sureties will give a testimony.kk

What a great system in place, I love the layout drawing for prisoners to follow and that they don't allow anything personal, every prisoner is treated the same, plus it makes the Staff's job a bit easier.

There's a reason why Singapore is one of the safest places in the world. The punishment for committing a crime is a deterrent. Not a lot of people commit crimes because it's not worth the punishment.

Apart from the inmates not having a bed in their cell, this prison is ran quite well. The inmates are given decent nutrition. The shower was in the cell if I'm not mistaken. Single man cells which takes away problems.
This prison is better than most prisons in the west, especially American prisons.

I understand having a celly can bring issues. But this is like being in the whole your entire sentence... Easily bringing mental health issues .. having a celly keeps u sane and connected. Thats why seg is a punishment . This is cruelty

  • @hitest8925
    @hitest8925 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Studies show that it is the degree of perceived "certainty" of being caught, not the degree of punishment, that acts most as a deterrent. So even if the punishment is harsh, if I believe there is no way I'll get caught, then I am more likely to commit that crime. Also, many crimes are spontaneous with no consideration of consequences so harsh punishments may be less effective than rehabilitation programs, particularly if the punishment results in the released prisoner being even less prepared to reenter society.

From a US perspective, weird to see such minor offenses attributed to maximum security imprisonment. Really telling of the culture and expectations of national prison systems. I appreciate one of the guards stating that good behavior in imprisonment does not equate to good citizen behavior- very true and am excellent perspective. As an American I thought conditions were exemplary and humane, but if convicts return in 2-3 months after release, what does it say about human behavior and society? Thank you for this wonderful documentary!

In the U.K. our justice system is terrible, they have televisions in their rooms, it’s like they’ve gone to a bed and breakfast place for a while, and the sentences they give out are so lenient, have a look at a crime committed by mick philpot, his wife and his best mate, 6 children died in a fire one night and the wife and his best mate are out already! he will be free eventually too so it’s just been a easy time for them all, we give them rights you see so they get treated fairly. Our prisons are a holiday camp it’s ridiculous.

I read a bit the Mick Philpott case. He is a psychopath and honestly should be placed in a mental institution for life because normal rehabilitation will not be effective. Now, with that said, it doesn’t mean he should be treated with cruelty. Reasons for this: A psychopath can never be shamed into submission. It makes those treating him with cruelty just as guilty. What people need to understand about incarceration is that the punishment is taking away a person’s freedom. That’s it. Nothing else. It’s not the guards job to punish them further. Having things to keep a prisoner occupied does a couple things. It keeps them placated so they do not have as much violence. It keeps the guards safer and the cost for health services down from inmate violence. It also keeps the inmates from going mental. You don’t want a person becoming worse when they get out. These people do have to integrate back into society and will live in our communities, making them worse leads to more harm in society. You have got to start thinking in terms of what is best for society as a whole.

@@jdmccoy1999 morning from a rainy Yorkshire, he doesn’t see wrong or have any empathy, he’s a narcissist who’s always right a typical psychopath, totally agree that he needs to go into a mental hospital, it’s sad that we don’t have any good funding for our NHS. The revolving door of prison guards coming and then leaving because they don’t get paid enough, the constant abuse they face and then dealing with very sick mentally unstable inmates is a recipe for their own mental health to be challenged, we don’t care enough for the people who sign up to protect us, our military, our police, our medics and firefighters don’t get any support, especially for our military personnel, we just don’t give them a softer landing from years of service and the things they will have dealt with when in wars, so many with PTSD. I come from a family of police officers, we had ten serving and all did 25 to just over 30 years between them, I was born in a police house when there used to be a police officer in the local area, we knew the community and they knew where to come when they needed help, there wasn’t crime like it is now, my family served from the 1950’s to 2010 and were old school and when my daughter was going to join they advised her not to because it’s just not the same. I have 3 wonderful girls, my daughter who wanted to join the police is the one in my user photo, and I’m glad that she changed her mind because I fear for this country, it’s so dangerous now, I feel that there’s so many morals being lost, so many being forgotten when they need help, the House of Lords are banning charities who give tents to the homeless, people committing crimes because of their addictions and the majority begin their addictions legally when given pain medication from the Drs, and then that goes all the way back to our prisons and the justice system. Thank you for your comment it’s good to connect to someone else’s perspective, it’s educational and it’s vital to listen to others so I appreciate your time and understanding. Have a good day hope you don’t get headache after reading my comment, well it’s like a novel there’s that much.😜 The very best of regards to you and yours from a very damp rainy South Yorkshire.

Prison is not supposed to be torture. I see a lot of comments wishing for all prison cells to not have beds & other amenities fit for human comfort.. That is wrong! The prison has already extracted them from society so they are paying for it with their absence. No prisoner deserves to live in squalor or deprived of human rights, they are already locked away in a cage. What a shame how people think this can’t happen to them or their loved ones.. That you would want anyone to suffer more than they already are, void of family & freedom.

It’s also cruel to think just because someone did commit a crime they should have to live in squalor. Being removed from society is torture enough.

@@ssmfetti yes, anyone can end up in jail, but jail is short term until you are either bonded out or awaiting your trial. Once you are convicted, you go to prison. If you are convicted, that means you are found guilty and have to pay your dues. Sometimes we get it wrong but the majority of the time we don’t. These prisons are controlled by the guards verses in America, the prisoners control the prisons. Everyone is in a gang and drugs are passed around freely. Assaults happen every day. US should take a lesson here.

@@Jazzykatt23 In the US, most cases don’t even go to trial. Inmates have also been known to spend up to 10 years waiting in jails. Kalief Browder spent 3 years just waiting to go to court & committed suicide due to the whole ordeal. The inmates are pressured into taking plea deals as having no funds for lawyer fees. Public defenders are known to sell out their clients so going to trial with one is futile. It doesn’t really matter if you’re innocent, you can still end up convicted.. Look up Brian Banks. Some are even sentenced to death like 14 year old George Stinney Jr. Sometime the crooked cops set up & plant things on people, eg;Meek Mill. There are countless other examples need not mentioned. The majority of the prisoners being black males, due to systemic racism.. Not because “sometimes we get it wrong;majority of the time we don’t.” The US prison system is overtly corrupt. Also, the prisoners in this video are also in gangs, they also smuggle contraband.. One was even participating in tattooing. Assaults also happen frequently in this jail, you just weren’t listening. They didn’t show any for privacy reasons as well as broadcast restrictions, plus TH-cam policy. But they did speak on them. You wanting US prisoners to suffer even more than they already do shows how callous your heart is.

An easy way to picture a SLIVER of prison reality is to picture how many times you wanted to fight someone out in public while driving or just walking around… now picture that in prison but only with the people who win all the fight, and create them… you know what I mean?? Just seconds can make someone want to kill you, your eyes can get you killed… keep your eyes to yourself and your own business otherwise you can make someone paranoid and dangerous towards you… understandably.. because you’d probably want to fight them too if they pissed you off just like out in public. There’s nothing to be proud of going to jail.. well that’s not fully true… but you know what I mean… be proud of being mentally strong and a member of society that leaves a legacy for the world to come.
