Behind Bars - Armavir Prison, Armenia: • Behind Bars 2: The Wor...
Old army tents left over from the Korean War house prisoners instead of cells. Will no walls or insulation around them, prisoners endure the unbearable heat of the summer, and the freezing cold of the winter. The Sheriff is a hard man who refuses to spend any more than he has to on his prisoners. Harassment and humiliation is a part of everyday life at Tent City.
The series accompanies guards on their daily routines: those who struggle to maintain law and order and those who abuse their powers mercilessly. But above all, each episode allows the viewer to see the world from the prisoner’s point of view: the newcomer spending his first terrifying night locked up. Felons who live for the day when their fate will be decided: will it be life behind bars? A worse fate? Foreigners, far away from home, languishing away under the most horrendous conditions. And mothers who have to raise their children in the shadow of prison bars.

Hope that one is better than this one. I dislike how the narration basically sucked Arpaio's eggplant the whole show. Why do they call this a "prison" and him a "warden", when neither of those are true? It was a county jail.

Solely from that point alone, I wish you all the best in the present and the future to be where and who you want to be and should that happen to be a person defined by their occupation and the pride they derive from it then so be it.

Sheriff Joe Arpio is a criminal and I would not piss on him if he was on fire, but I am grateful for the eye opening experience.
Weren't you sensible enough to come to such realisation in a less humiliating prison ? You might be the exception ,because it seems it doesn't work to keep most ex convicts on the straight. Would like to see the numbers (if they are published that is) about repeat offenders from this facility , or how many actually die there. Or those who leave Arizona and continue to commit even worse crimes in other states.
Not pretending to be a liberal woozy .....murder ,rape and repeat offenders might deserve such treatments , but for someone landing there for a 'petty' crime is unnecessary torture.
Why is it that crime is not as rampant in most nations that treat prisoners more reasonably than some U.S. prisons ? Might it be that crime is seen as something that can be made money of ? The countless judges ,attorneys , and everything associated with it ....

If there's one thing I know is that harsh and inhumane conditions in prison do not translate to lesser crime in the streets. Seeing these documentaries is the proof of that - countries with the toughest prisons always have the highest crime rates.
It's because prison is full of psychopaths. Psychopaths are immune to punishment learning, they have no fear conditioning due to hypoactive amygdala. So the best way to motivate psychopaths is with reward, reward em when they behave well, punishment doesn't work.
@@starboiklem8381 With all due respect, I think you missed my point. He was also suspected of mismanagement of the prison’s funds. The list of claims against this man are as long or longer than some of the records of the inmates under his guard.

They fundamentally dont understand that the goal of prison is two fold: to punish and rehabilitate. This prison only does the first one - cruelly. Rehabilitation is completely neglected so most will likely be back.
Thats cause this is JAIL not PRISON. Jail is only to hold you for trial. Prison is where you get the rehabilitation and programs
@@sil3ntkn1ght27 so people should just languish in jails for years sometimes?
@@tor-erikbakke1352 yes
I looked it up, their recidivism (=re-offending, going back to prison) rate is about average by US standards ~40%. Not the highest but not the lowest either.
What's really weird is recidivism seems to have nothing to do with the politics nor the demographics of a state...
some examples:
California, Missouri, South Dakota, Utah all have high recidivism.
Michigan, Texas, Rhode Island, Mississippi all have low recidivism.
incarceration is the punishment - jail don't mean you get extra punish just because you there
"If I mispronounced your last name. Well I'm sure you've been called worse" lol best line.

Cruel and unusual punishment. They shouldn't have a sadist in control of the whole thing.

That warden is the epitome of the evil wardens you see on tv. He sees them as animals and it humors him
He is a sociopath. Those people get out of prison and will relapse, because they don't have any dignity left. Ridiculous concept. Any mental health professional will tell you that this hell just does not rehabilitate people. It does the opposite.
Agree. he is a horrible human being and sociopath. he feels pleasure to treat them harshly. Instead of rehebilate them and gain back to society those inmates, he is harming them more.

For real
How Global.
@Talf Fire Because they tried to switch everything over to global measurements back in th 80's in US. It gained 0 traction. So, to see Arpaio's "old school" forms of punishment prison using Celsius instead of the standard Farenheit measurements used in the US is quite odd. Yw.
It's what they use in the military
@@Auriraka Do they? Interesting 🤔

The tents are now shut down. They cost about 8.5 million dollars per year to run. They're now saving over 4 million dollars by closing them.
Arpaio is running for sheriff again, unfortunately
Isaac R he should be in jail himself, not running for office, but here we are!
I can imagine it wasn’t cost effective due to the constant heat strokes.
Why is it it expensive to have tents outside?
@@Rips4Days per year. They would probably have to replace lots of equipment every year versus a building. They mention in the video the initial cost was only a few hundred thousand versus millions for a building. So more expensive per year but much cheaper overall.
Having the food network on in the background during meal periods is total savagery 😂
Arpaio's reaction to the camera crew commenting on the food channel playing in the cafeteria while the inmates eat the same thing everyday shows that the sheriff is a true sadist. I wasn't sure he is actually a cruel person till this special. He is a border line sociopath. Also, pregnant women being exposed to that kind of heat and conditions is arguably a human rights violation. Aside from what he's doing to the the pregnant moms...it's what he's doing to the unborn children. That's the real human rights violation!

While those jails are fucked up, this isn't a 3rd world country. It shouldn't be nearly like this.
If there’s a lot of regular “guests” that just means the sheriff’s methods are just sadistic bs that doesn’t help
the sheriff is a criminal and he takes satisfaction from committing crimes since he knows he won't be charged.
That's because they are mostly drug addicts in for possession. This should be used on criminals that can be reformed. Drug addicts need rehabilitation services not heavy handed incarceration it doesn't work for them. It would work on younger offenders, dealers, petty crime.
I’ve spent a lot years in Phoenix . As someone who has never been to jail this is awful. I’ve seen good men do bad things and had to go here. It really changed them , and not for the better. You can’t treat humans like animals and expect them to act like anything other than animals. Also take in mind so many of these prisoners are in for minor charges. Arizona’s laws are much stricter than other parts of the US . I don’t know what the solution is for our prison systems but this isn’t it.
It’s messed up but that’s how the prison system works, they come out worse then when they came in so they can return and make the prison company more money.
Lol I have one simple solution,
Don’t do something that’s gonna end you up in prison ☺️
Maybe the individual can make better choices......ever think of that? Good men...do bad things? That's an oxymoron.

Update on Tent City has now closed. With findings of "Hepburn found Arpaio’s tactics - the whole tough-on-crime thing - it had no impact. He found that recidivism rates are about 60 percent depending on whether you spent time in Tent City or the Fourth Avenue Jail."
Whereas Norway who treat their prisoners fairly and help them before they leave prison. Have a recidivism rate of around 15-20%. In Norway there is a prison museum that looks a lot like UK and USA prison. Treating people like animals then throwing back into society after 20 years. Turns out isnt helpful and only makes more criminals.
The difference between Norwegian and american prison system is punishment. in Norway the punishment is the removal of freedom. Full stop.
In America the punishment is removal of freedom + that the prisoner should suffer as much as legally possible so that the victims can "feel good". The last part does only harm, and makes the prisoner only more angry and recentful, and is possibly the cause of the high recidivism in america.
@@Andy80No This is very true. In America their prison system is based of revenge. Whereas Norway is based of empathy. Which is why you see the difference in the recidivism rates.
Prison does create more criminals. You get caught for a minor offence and leave prison as a professional criminal.

Lived in AZ 6 years, the heat in the summer is brutal, could not even touch my steering wheel in my car to drive home from work, this is absolutely insane!
I have a kitchen oven met that I keep in my car for when the steering wheel is too hot.
