  • Behind Bars: The World’s Toughest Prisons - Episode 4: Tent City Jail, Phoenix, Arizona, USA | Prison Documentary
Behind Bars - Armavir Prison, Armenia: • Behind Bars 2: The Wor...
Old army tents left over from the Korean War house prisoners instead of cells. Will no walls or insulation around them, prisoners endure the unbearable heat of the summer, and the freezing cold of the winter. The Sheriff is a hard man who refuses to spend any more than he has to on his prisoners. Harassment and humiliation is a part of everyday life at Tent City.
The series accompanies guards on their daily routines: those who struggle to maintain law and order and those who abuse their powers mercilessly. But above all, each episode allows the viewer to see the world from the prisoner’s point of view: the newcomer spending his first terrifying night locked up. Felons who live for the day when their fate will be decided: will it be life behind bars? A worse fate? Foreigners, far away from home, languishing away under the most horrendous conditions. And mothers who have to raise their children in the shadow of prison bars.

Hope that one is better than this one. I dislike how the narration basically sucked Arpaio's eggplant the whole show. Why do they call this a "prison" and him a "warden", when neither of those are true? It was a county jail.

Weren't you sensible enough to come to such realisation in a less humiliating prison ? You might be the exception ,because it seems it doesn't work to keep most ex convicts on the straight. Would like to see the numbers (if they are published that is) about repeat offenders from this facility , or how many actually die there. Or those who leave Arizona and continue to commit even worse crimes in other states.
Not pretending to be a liberal woozy .....murder ,rape and repeat offenders might deserve such treatments , but for someone landing there for a 'petty' crime is unnecessary torture.
Why is it that crime is not as rampant in most nations that treat prisoners more reasonably than some U.S. prisons ? Might it be that crime is seen as something that can be made money of ? The countless judges ,attorneys , and everything associated with it ....

Let’s just shelf the fact that the sheriff parks his TANK at the gates and question how such a sadist was put in charge of this (or any) facility. Convicted of a crime should result in prison time but when you’re there the best way to stop reoffending is to educate people, get them into work programs that they can continue upon their release, help them turn their lives around. I am under no illusions that some are too far gone but there are many that are not, Freddy, for example, on a 1 year sentence wouldn’t resent the system that helped him make something of himself. And the fact that Joe Arpaio was praised for only spending £150,000 rather than £80 million is a diabolical example of prison for profit. He is helping no one just gets off on the suffering of others.

Notice something about the tank? They never said if he owned it personally or if it was government property as in city, county, state. If government property, they never said how much he spent to get it. In the states veteran groups like the American Legion, VFW can request and get a demilled tank, artillery piece as a static display in front of the post.

What's really weird is recidivism seems to have nothing to do with the politics nor the demographics of a state...
      some examples:
California, Missouri, South Dakota, Utah all have high recidivism.
Michigan, Texas, Rhode Island, Mississippi all have low recidivism.

Whereas Norway who treat their prisoners fairly and help them before they leave prison. Have a recidivism rate of around 15-20%. In Norway there is a prison museum that looks a lot like UK and USA prison. Treating people like animals then throwing back into society after 20 years. The difference between Norwegian and american prison system is punishment. in Norway the punishment is the removal of freedom. Full stop.
In America the punishment is removal of freedom + that the prisoner should suffer as much as legally possible so that the victims can "feel good". The last part does only harm, and makes the prisoner only more angry and recentful, and is possibly the cause of the high recidivism in america.
