- When a hammock is purchased, they usually do not come with any instructions. When I first purchased a hammock, I thought like most people. Find two trees, attach it, and then lay in it. Through trial and error, I finally found the best way to hang a hammock and to lay in a hammock.This video is how to hang a hammock and how to properly lay in a hammock.

I camped in 20 degrees farenheit with a foam pad and a 0° F bag. I also wore a fleece sweater but found myself opening the bag slightly to cool off! I also covered my face in a blanket. It was surreal waking up in a thick layer of frost!

My 12 year old daughter and I just went backpacking with hammocks (3 nights, 55 miles) for the first time. Even though I did ALL 3 of those things you bring up wrong, it was still a better experience than I've had in a tent. Around here if the ground is good you're on a slope and if it's flat you're dealing with lava rocks and scrub oak grit. This allowed us to find a spot just about anywhere we wanted to with a minimum of preparations. I also loved that I could pack camp by shoving everything into a bag. Now that I've seen a couple of your videos, I cannot wait to go out and do it right.
The best part of it all is experiencing the great outdoors with our children. I just got back from a trip with my son. You take her along as much as you can, They grow up so fast. But by investing in the time with her now. She will still want to go with you 21 years from now, like my son. Thank you for watching Al. I really appreciate it.

-) 68 degrees is when you can start getting chilled in a uninsulated hammock.
-) A underquilt goes under the hammack to provide un-compressed insulation. there are hammocks with a insulation-pad pocket.
-) Lay in the hammock asymmetrically instead of banana-style.
-) 12 to 17 feet between trees to give a 30 degree strap config as measured with finger-trick.
-) A ridge line should just be taut, I need to try this to hang stuff above me.
-) and from comments, ventilation is a big plus, but - to limit chill, limit airflow.
-) hang low enough to sit, double hammock over to make more comfy

I swear, the first time i slept in one i slept for like 8-9 hours straight! Just try and keep it to rum and not beer, when its a pain to get out of in the middle of the night to have a piss :D
I slept in a diagonal hammock instead of a bed a combined 24 months over the last 18 year's.
Put two big eyebolts in the walls of a 1 room apartment and used that instead of a bed. In the morning,it goes into a basket and I had my whole room instead of one piece of furniture taking up all my space.
It's good to see James Cameron getting back to the basics.

In late autumn long ago, I simply lay a space blanket across the hammock got into my sleeping bag & was fine I don't see anyone doing that.🤠??

Me too for the type of hammock in the video. For backpacking I use a warbonnet balckbird which sit perfectly without doing the fold over.

I learned to use two pillows. One for my head and the other under my knees. Makes it 10x better!
That's good for any bed if you are a back sleeper.
Its a pain in the butt to get 2 pillows in a back-pack along with all your other gear how BIG is your pack.lol
Well not if you get the little blow up ones. Blow that bad boy up and there ya go. Then when it's time to go take the air out roll it up tight and there ya go 😉

If I had the room I would take 2 pillows with me but I use a small 5l backpack witch has enough room for my tarp, hammock, small sleeping bag, ropes, food, water and a few other things lol
@@nathangoodfellow5260 Waterproof stuff sack makes a pillow, even with clothing in it. I want my clothes to stay dry anyway. when it is in the pack.
My dad has a canvas hammock on a stand that I sleep in when I visit. He has a small house with no guest room but the hammock is set up in the living room. It's inside, but winter in the north in a room that isn't well heated is still chilly so I have a sleeping bag under me and a blanket over. I either sleep at a diagonal or nearly sitting up with my upper body pretty high in the hammock and my legs at the lowest part folded up butterfly style.

You TOTALLY forgot the 4th Big Mistake... People taking a hammock to go hiking in the desert. ; )
Now that would be a big mistake.
Most deserts in this country are semi-arid and have something to hang on...
There is a person who is designing hiking poles that can be used to suspend a hammock. It may already be on the market. Video demonstrating it... th-cam.com/video/2kPvSn5_T58/w-d-xo.html
It will depend on the exact environment but....All you need is 2 tripods and a ridge pole to rig up for hanging. Or use it as a ground tent too...just cuz it’s a hammock doesn’t mean you have to hang it.
Finding 2 suspension anchors is problem #1. In the desert you might hike when it's cooler in the early morning or at night and sleep during the day, problem #2 is you'll need a tarp to provide shade .
Appreciate the video. I've spent the night in my fishing net hammock at home many times and the offset sleeping position came natural. Going on a 100 mile canoe trip on the Manistee in MI next month, anticipating mid 40's + at night there for mid September. Thought the down sleeping bag would work, will be working with alternatives instead. Thanks for serving this Great Nation brother !!! I have that same pad and have been using it for hammock camping for over a decade. Works great. Below freezing, I add another pad with my 20 deg. sleeping bag. Works great. I have no desire to switch to an underquilt. But I sleep hot. My buddy who has blood circulation problems switched to an underquilt and still uses a 0 deg. bag in below freezing temps.
I use a breathable bivvy sack in the case of cold winds in cold temps.
I find hammocks so much more comfy for sleeping than in a tent with even a 3" inflatable pad.

This is a great video, the tips are so helpful. As a single mom i take my kids camping every summer in the national parks, and we love our hammocks!! Lol. One thing about the national parks tho is the rangers check all the straps on the hammocks to make sure they are designed, certified proper tree straps. That rained on our parade that year as we had to take them down, but I was very prepared the next year. I can see you camp off the beaten path, just thought I'd mention it as it may be useful to someone else. : )) 🎣⛺

Good advice for campers who start using a hammock. Something a new person never thinks of and just one of many benefits of a hammock ...360 degree ventilation. I like to use a Therm-a-rest mummy shaped self inflating mattress in my hammock. I have it about 1/2 to 3/4 inflated so it will conform to my body and the hammock. It does not need to be fully inflated since you are not sleeping on the ground with roots , pine cones , pebbles or anything poking you in the backside. By the way on that rare occasion if you ever have to use your hammock as a solo tent the mattress is already with you.
Here in Florida I have only used a under quilt a couple of times. You mentioned a double layer hammock. One great invention and for insects a nightmare. Mosquitoes have never bitten me threw a double bottom hammock but feasted on me in a single layer one. I'm referring to hammocks with a built in ( top ) bug netting which leaves the bottom exposed. Not the hammock which has netting surrounding them.
"The Ultimate Hang " that's one book everyone should read. . I have been hammock camping for over 60 years and I learned a lot from it.
Chuck, you are right about the mattress. I filmed this video at a State Park near my home. When I came to the part about the mattress. I realized I left it at home. But I did forget the point about the protection of a double layer hammock from biting insects. That can be a big plus for people that may have those situations. I wished I would have remembered to mention that. Thank you for your great comments.
I got a hammock for xmas I have not tried yet, its Norwegian winter here right now so I think I will wait until spring. But I have a question for you, I am a fan of woolen blankets and I use 100% wool army blankets and they give me a comfortable sleep even if its a bit chill outside. How do you think a woolen blanket will behave in a hammock, it should not lose any function since it cant be compressed much?

My first hammock experience was a trip I did when I was 17... I bought a blue poly tarp from Canadian Tire, collected the ends together with a pebble and some rope, and brought a couple cans of maple baked beans with a loaf of bred... that was a good weekend.
Fast forward a couple decades and nothing much has changed other then my gear is just a weebit more posh.

Living in a tropical country i never expected to see a hammock used in cold weather. So i learned a couple of things with this video.
If the hammock is extremely wide you can lay down completely perpendicular to the hammock instead of diagonal.
When i saw the video all i can think of was "A gringo who knows how to use a hammock" 😂😂😂👍👍Wonderful

It dropped to 27°F when I was out camping in june! and all I had was a cheap wool camp blanket... needless to say I "creeked" when I got up in the morning. But at least I know my fire skills are on point.

Great video! I’ve been using a hammock for the last three years and love it. The best sleep I’ve ever had in the woods. I started with a nine foot long hammock (because it was cheap and had a built in bug net) and found that there is a ratio of height to length of hammock (I’ve found about twice my height is a good length). So I purchased a twelve foot hammock, let the kids use the first hammock and haven’t looked back (I bought an additional bug net for the longer hammock). The only thing I noticed you didn’t mention was using an inflatable pillow. I’ve used one in both hammocks and really like the additional support for my head even in an asymmetrical or cross body lay.
I am doing a video series called The Beginners Guide to Hammock and Hammock Camping. I think episode 6 will be about ways to get comfortable in a hammock. For the head and the legs. I like how you adapted from a 9 foot ( which is way to small for most adults ) to a longer hammock. Very wise. Thank you for watching.

I like more of a "smile" than 30 degrees, myself :) I like a good diagonal (not banana) and a really comfy "hug". Really hate spread bars. Great to put one foot under the other knee too. I sleep in a hammock every night so I don't wake with a sore back. Felted wool makes the absolute best under-quilt ever by the way ;) LOVE hammocks! Great tip for sitting too! Never thought of that one.

Thanks for all the great info! 95% of my hammocks were Hatteras type hammocks with a huge lawn stand, and a very inexpensive and dangerous! nylon with screen sewn in hammock used to camp in the snow in Yosemite in Oct! Brrrrrr. Knowing more would have saved me a fall when that zipper broke on the net attached to the nylon! And my butt wouldn't have frozen off if I had even heard about under quilts! Even then, when I retreated to my tent, I knew then that I wanted to switch a hammock to get off the ground! Since then, I want one to sleep in in my home and camp in, and your vid just opened up my world! Saved me from making more hammock mistakes and taught me so much! (Esp. the hammock hanging angle!!! and buying a wide enough hammock to sleep diagonally! TYSM!

@@AdventureswiththeMarine . Well the good news is that I didn’t fall out of it once it was set up. The other was the figure of 8 knots I tied held me securely at the level I placed it. So all in all a great success! I got chilly at about 03:30. Nothing a jacket wouldnt sort & I awoke just on 05:00.
Love the advice on how to lay in a hammock, I've gone Hammock Camping several times and I've always sleep better than I did when I would lay on the ground, but laying in it at an angle takes it to a whole new level of comfort

When first bought my ENO over ten years ago.I would lay in it like a banana and would be uncomfortable with in minutes. Then I would move diagonally till I was comfortable. My foot would hang out a little, but I was comfortable. I really don't know why hammock makers don't throw in a little paper with instruction with there hammocks. Thanks for that nice comment.
They should also make their hammocks longer

I used to live in mexico and there wasn't a mattress in 150 miles. I have a ruptured disk at L4-L5 and I slept in a hammock for three years. He is rite about laying at an angle, you are perfectly flat. Never buy a knotted hammock no matter how small the thread is you will feel every one of them. get a woven one or cloth like his.

I started sleeping in a hammock in my home because of back pain. I don't wake up crippled anymore! And yes, I'm often a side sleeper. It's going on 5 years now. I use a second hammock with a down comforter under my sleeping hammock, for warmth. I truly can't sleep without pain in a bed anymore. So glad I found this solution for my back. I suggest it to everyone who suffers pressure point pain when reclining.

I hang two hammocks, nice nylon slippery one on the inside. Put the yoga mat in the middle (inbetween both hammocks) for insulation. $5 from Kmart yoga mat. My outside hammock is just a cotton south american type. You can innovate, its not hard, dont spend a fortune. I also used a sleeping bag with the yoga mat inside it as an inner lining. Got sleeping bag for $6 from the charity second hand store.

@Backpacking With a Hammock. Is there a way to be safe from bears if you sleep in a hammock out in a national park other than with bear spray? A young guy has a company in the Netherlands or Germany that designed & sells a device that you put on your bike that can attach around an electric pole, so you can raise your bike via remote control, higher than anyone can reach, to protect it from theft. Some kind of mobile temporary treehouse would be nice for in a tree, with a flat surface for sleeping on and an inner and outer memory foam mattress to help grip the tree and bungee cords to attach to the trunk and branches.
Now that I think of it, some kind of carbon fiber bike powered teardrop camper that you could anchor with stakes in the ground, would probably be much better, and too strong for an animal to break into.
P.S., I just saw one of those Animal Planet or similar specials about animal attacks, about a young couple with a baby who went camping, and were all sleeping in a tent on the ground, even though their car or SUV was parked less than 20 feet away. While sleeping, a bear attacked them right through their tent and nearly killed the guy. The husband was fighting for some time with some assistance from the wife, getting seriously cut up and torn apart to some degree, by the bear, before finally getting into his car. You better have a couple cans of bear spray in special Velcro flapped holders near hand's reach before sleeping in a hammock outside, in or near bear country.
@@valerieann8007 Its too bad this comment is 2 years old, I have so many questions. Like where were they, what kindof bear was it, was their food inside their tent? I camp in the Adirondacks alot, and I get nervous about bears, but I don't know any one or have myself experienced a bear even attacking a food cooler let alone people. Brown bear though I've always heard are less aggressive than grizzlys or black bear.

Love my hammock but outside of summer camping the hammock , quilts & overhead tarp is just simply too heavy and even some 4 season tents are lighter than the hammock gear but it's hard to beat the comfort of the hammock vs crawling into a tent . Great video, very informative. Thank you

You can get a good UL setup if you do your research before buying. Currently I am at just over 5lbs. for hammock + rain fly + underquilt. All easily fit in my 50L pack, though in the case of the underquilt it's easier for me to strap it to the top due to size.
@littleredhen8205 The majority of my tent experience was with a North Face Ambition 35. I pick it up now and can't believe I backpacked that sucker in the Rockies in my youth. Plus air or foam mattress and sleeping bag. My hammocks are *way* lighter.
Before hammocks I'd bring my sheep skin with me out instead of a sleeping pad. I find that just bringing my reindeer or sheep skin works better than any pad because you can't really compress it to a point where it loses it's insulation. With that said, I do live in Scandinavia and it can get kind of cold while camping in Norway (I'm actually from Denmark, but we go there during winters because Norway is gorgeous), so a hide won't always be enough during winters here and I made my own under-quilt from a sleeping bag. I still bring the hide, the only downside to a hide is the weight. But if you're strong it's not really an issue because you can use the sheep or reindeer skin to warm yourself when you're walking or sitting around the fire.
My Icelandic sheep skin is good to down around 20 fahrenheit (below -6 degrees celsius) if I use a tarp and an appropriate sleeping bag. Location can also have something to do with it.
If you can, I would recommend giving it a go. If you're all about that ultra-light life, it's not for you.
I do have a sheep skin that I lay on inside my hammock during the winter time. Mine is just a little small. I wish I would of bought a larger one. I am seeing more and more people up in the northern part of the USA starting to use them. The reason for that is that they work well. You are right that they may be on the heavier side. Great idea for deer hunters to experiment using the hide from hunting. I can only imagine with some help from others on the Internet, that a hide that might get tossed could become a useful bedding item.

Nothing is better then using an all natural Fur pelt especially because it is designed to endor the elements as if the animal is still alive and works perfectly inside or out depending on the weather.

I'd also like to add, it's a good idea to put sticks between the strap and the tree, so there's minimal strain on the tree and less damage, so the strap is resting an tight around the sticks and not the trees itself
