The scene where Frieren finds the flowers makes me so emotional every time. There's something so beautiful to me about her being offered this act of love by Himmel and not recognizing it, but coming back to return that act of love even decades after his death. Her placing that flower crown on his head is just such a beautiful moment
The first episode of the Spice and Wolf remake just aired this week. When Spice and Wolf came out in 2008 we watched the first episode without realizing it would STEAMROLL the anime community, it's LEGENDARY among the greatest of all time, and... Frieren looks like it will be in the hall of fame right next to the legends. It earned it's place in people's hearts, imho

Michael, im glad you finally decided to start this cinematic masterpiece. I finished it only yesterday and i would describe it as nothing less than a 10/10 masterpiece. But remember, its not just the grand adventures and stellar music and animation that make this anime so great. It is the smallest things that you can miss with the blink of an eye. Truly deserving of the crown of The King of Anime.

I've never understood why people call this show slow paced. I think things are moving quite fast in this show, so it's not slow at all. Having less of an focus on action doesn't mean that pacing is slower.

Just a few things if no one else has mentioned it; this anime is really about paying attention to little details, as small things make emotional impacts later in series. You DO learn why Frieren has a habit of collecting spells, and it all starts with her master, who is revealed in Episode 4 and you learn way more about her in the penultimate mid-season episode 10. There is speculation that since Priests are the only ones who can effectively use holy magic (dispelling and resisting curses, casting holy affinity offensive magic, blessings and healing) that they are also granted longer lives than normal. Some people even say that Heiter passed away when he was over 100. Names in Frieren follow Japanese naming conventions, using commonplace words. I started watching this show after seeing your notification about the hype being real. Like you, I was hooked immediately. I even teared up when Himmel passed away. I watched the first four episodes back to back. Would've watched more but I had to sleep for work. Also, I'm watching the dubbed version. To me, the voice actors are perfect fits for the characters. Props for taking note of the music. It's so important. My three tiers of reactions are: 1) Are they putting on a show or do they have sincere emotional reactions where they should be? 2) Do they understand when they are staring at some of the best animation ever seen in a TV show? 3) Do they recognize when the music is doing most of the heavy lifting? Obviously the average person isn't going to be on top of these things and will at best pass the first tier (though I've seen some folks who were either emotionally dead or just putting on an act for their channel-you hate to see it). I don't fault them for it, since at least they _are_ reacting to what the music is doing, but people who _understand_ their reactions deserve extra credit for sure.

02:35 I'm re-watching this show and am once again amazed by the details. In this scene, when Himmel is talking, Himmel's eyes are on Frieren and we can see her on screen. But when Frieren is talking, her eyes are not on Himmel, and we don't see him on screen. It's definitely a carefully crafted show.

Always a thrill to see people finding a great anime; Shinsekai Yori, Dangers in my Heart, Apothecary Diary. And, of course, Sousou Frieren. Watching these two episodes with you I caught little nuances, felt the themes more deeply. Something that makes a great story is that when you watch again, it gets better. See you at the next one.
Man everything about this show is perfect, animation, writing, direction, music, characters, etc. It's cemented itself in my top 3 favorite anime of all time.
For real though, I've read the manga and finished season 1 and it just does everything so perfectly. I can't find any fault with it. There are maybe some arbitrary nitpicks I could make but they don't add up to much and the show and the manga are just so consistently great. even the slow moments of the show just are so nice to watch. I really think it'll be in the #1 spot on My Anime List for a while, and I think people will still talk about it 10-15 years from now like people still talk about FMAB.

Frieren recently toppled FullMetal Alchemist from the top spot on MyAnimeList (MAL), where it had sat for more than a decade. Both are Shonen manga that have women mangakas, and both start with loss. Both are praised for excellent characterization, complex and nuanced issues, delicate handling of plot, emotional intensity and touching sentimentalism.
Lastly, the series is named "Sousou no Frieren." While this has often been translated as "Frieren The Slayer" that is INCORRECT. "Sousou no" is the act of "sending off" as in a funeral. So while the manga title may be translated as "Frieren, the Final Farewell to the Dead" since that's more literary, the more precise translation is "Frieren the Undertaker." This has more than one meaning, but the two most common interpretations is that we learn that Elves in Frieren are essentially immortal, so Frieren will eventually "send off" all her non-elven friends. The second meaning is to "see someone off" is also a euphemism for killing and is Frieren is first identified by a demon as the titular character in Episode 8.

I started watching this show after seeing your notification about the hype being real. Like you, I was hooked immediately. I even teared up when Himmel passed away. I watched the first four episodes back to back. Would've watched more but I had to sleep for work. Also, I'm watching the dubbed version. To me, the voice actors are perfect fits for the characters. Props for taking note of the music. It's so important. My three tiers of reactions are: 1) Are they putting on a show or do they have sincere emotional reactions where they should be? 2) Do they understand when they are staring at some of the best animation ever seen in a TV show? 3) Do they recognize when the music is doing most of the heavy lifting? Obviously the average person isn't going to be on top of these things and will at best pass the first tier (though I've seen some folks who were either emotionally dead or just putting on an act for their channel-you hate to see it). I don't fault them for it, since at least they _are_ reacting to what the music is doing, but people who _understand_ their reactions deserve extra credit for sure.

For real though, I've read the manga and finished season 1 and it just does everything so perfectly. I can't find any fault with it. There are maybe some arbitrary nitpicks I could make but they don't add up to much and the show and the manga are just so consistently great. even the slow moments of the show just are so nice to watch. I really think it'll be in the #1 spot on My Anime List for a while, and I think people will still talk about it 10-15 years from now like people still talk about FMAB.
Yeah, it's the little things in the story that make it so good.
