Same thing happened with Cody's VT1, people kept saying it was trash or at least not worth using because Cody's VT2 is so strong, even after the VT1 buffs. Then the moment Shine started using more VT1 than VT2, those people got real quiet after realizing that while yes, VT2 is a stronger toolbox for stupid set-play damage, VT1 makes Cody's neutral that much more devastating - but more importantly, much safer - which is even more dangerous given the sheer amount of primate damage Cody can shit out.
When top Kens are using VT2 over VT1 you know it’s stronger. I’m glad you looked went over this and educated the non-Ken players. It also has some weird properties too, where you can just hang-time in the air over certain supers , if you pop just before their start-up. I’ve done it against guile’s super and I think G’s too if I remember. VT2 definitely gives Ken the ability to fight back/have respect in MU’s where he was out-neutraled before the buff. It gives Ken overall more versatility than he had before, where is was “okay” in until he popped VT1 .
I've seen the same takes about Gief's V-Skill 2. It doesn't have the vast properties and access that flex does, but it's got some effective uses with good spacing. It's just not easy to use if you're a lower end player.
wow thanks for the explanation, I never really thought about the other applications for this move outside of anti airing because that all I ever see Ken's use it for in my rank (silver) but this video helped me understand that, also that I should be more thoughtful when it comes to judging something, so thanks
That makes me wonder if some people default to it as an anti-air over Shoryu because V-Trigger is technically an easier input than the dragon punch motion. As someone who still drops that input from time to time, I can see it being more comfortable to press two buttons at the same time to try and hit someone above me in a pinch.
ooof never copy people from around your skillset because think about it. If you don't think you know what you're doing, then those other people in your rank DEFINELTY dont know what they're doing. I'd say watch people who are better than you and try to understand why they play the way they do.
I feel the same about Juri's V-Trigger 2. Much like Ken's, it has also gotten buffs over time, though most people write it off for not draining a lot of meter while you're comboing opponents, to which I say... yeah, 'cause you're hitting them and they're building meter as they lose it. In my experience and observations, they won't gain meter faster than they can lose it in a decent ground combo, so you don't give them more resources than they started with, and you're gaining way more meter than you usually would for combo extensions with EX moves or to cash out with super. Plus, the activation hitbox is larger than you'd expect from the animation (again, similar to Ken's).
I main Sakura and everyoe was like VT1 sucks cause It didnt get the damage of VT2, but then when people saw the stuff people were doing with VT1 everyone came around. When the 2nd Vskills dropped everyone said Sakura VS2 sucked cause it didnt go through fireballs when it gives her like half screen corner carry off one hk crush counter smh.
I'll forever remember Ultradavid talking about this a few years ago. He said something along the lines of the mentality of "x move SHOULD do this" is a bad mindset to have. Like writing off Ken's VT2, because people think it SHOULD be an anti-air when that just is not how it's supposed to be used. You can figure out uses for every move and just because a particular move doesn't work exactly the way you want/expect it to doesn't mean that it's bad, it just means that's not what it's supposed to be used for.
good job calling out people for ignorant comments without actually calling them ignorant...and educating them at the same time. you've improved the internet by 0.00000001%, but at least you made a difference with your approach.
People should also know that if Ken pop a RAW VT2 successfully, he can combo it into light spinkick=> heavy dp => CA which is a very easy combo with 565 damage(325 stun).
Ken VT2 is the perfect case example of where the players (well YT comments) are like "This move should work like this" instead of "This move works like this". VT2 isn't an anti-air and as you brought up, Ken has DP and even cr.HP as AAs.
People want to complain and don't actually want to get better or put the work in to do so. Literally all those comments were. It's just like how people want to learn an instrument, buy one, and never play it. People need to look inward.
Thanks for explaining the V-trigger and showing some combos. I just recently started playing SFV online and this is a great addition to my 3 move flowchart Ken!
haha those same people commenting on vt2 in the first video probably in here saying it's broken now. Wish people would just sit and think about stuff and lab it out like Brian does here instead of taking to the internet to express their baby rage.
Didnt think you'd do a whole vid on vt2 as a ken main I can appreciate it because it's a nuanced move with a variety of different implications, I especially love using it in the akuma match up.
I thought you would use the CPT EU footage of Infexious vs Problem X. There wasn't a single Psycho Axe or sHP whiffed that went unpunished when Inf had VTrigger.
I mean it’s not even bad, the point is that you can’t write off moves entirely without understanding the strengths, weaknesses, and risk reward a fair bit
the main thing that's disappointing about it not anti-airing well is that Attack Property V-Triggers have really bad damage scaling when you cancel into them, you could get significantly more damage if it anti-aired better, however, it's still a quite good trigger elsewhere
Bar count matters for trigger selection too. Ken has a very good v reversal and a 2 bar trigger means he can use it (and/or possibly multiple v shifts) and still see trigger that round. The 3 bar triggers should be more powerful but sometimes a 2 bar needing 1 less to activate can make a huge difference in overall utility for a matchup or playstyle.
This is absolute true. People need to learn that moves work well in the right situation. Also, SFV players complain and dismiss things too much. When SFV first came out, Tokido stated that he would use Akuma. He was asked, "Akuma? Are, you sure? He's not a very good character." People were saying other characters were trash until we saw someone compete well in a tournament with him or her.
I don’t remember having fun, when i was born my father put a Dreamcast controller in my hand and made me play 3rd strike online. Been in ranked ever since!
I picked up Ken this weekend, having not played the game in years. His season 5.5 changes are giving me some of the most fun I've had in this game since it launched. Really funny how people were saying VT2 is trash as I don't think I'd ever care to play VT1 with this new option. I've also found myself playing VSkill2 over VSkill1. Those two additions to ken make him into a very different character than he was at launch, and for me, a really fun one.
I am not good enough at the game to comprehend why pro's choose Fang's 2nd v-trigger. I just pick his first one because I don't like the way his hands look in the second one.
damn I had a friend who used ken vt2 as an anti air and I lead him astray cause I told him bro stop picking that it's trash. When instead I should have said bro you're trash and you don't know how to use that vt2, thanks Brian_F!
i thought ggs garuda impact was a terrible move when i first started playing. It has slow startup, doesnt do anything when blocked (i didnt know anything about setups or set play) and it only combo'ed into buster when super close. oh how naive I was
I don't want to defend people's ignorance, but... Shinryuken is a legacy move. It's basically one of Ken's variations on the Shoryuken. So, unlike with Lucia's V-Triggers, for example, people have certain preconceptions about it - and it certainly feels weird to see something so similar to a DP get stuffed by an air attack so cleanly.
"Do you remember playing videogames and having fun?" Got me cryin in the club rn

Can you do a video like this about cammy’s VT2? I think it’s pretty generally accepted that it’s bad
Its generally accepted that vt1 is the better option in most scenarios, not that it’s bad inherently.
"Alright, so you guys ever remember playing video games"
nope, never=
I believe this deserves a "Gottem. GG's.", but Brian is a humble man. (In this instance XD) Very nice video man
