Ultimate 2019 Honda Pilot Review | 3-Row Value

  • With SUVs and crossovers continually gaining popularity, Honda made some big upgrades to its already impressive Pilot 3 Row SUV. Upgrades aren't just exterior styling, but also interior features and changes in feature availability. One huge change is that Honda Sensing is now standard on every trim level. The strong points of the Pilot are that it's very practical and spacious, but doesn't drive quite as well as some competitors, particularly the Mazda CX-9. Although we have the fully loaded Pilot Elite trim, I will cover the others from the LX to the Touring as well!

    CORRECTION: the Adaptive Cruise Control is NOT full stop and go. What do you think of the 2019 Pilot? Which 3 Row vehicle would you get in this class?

      Prime Autotainment best value: base model Tiguan (feels way above price point) - most desirable: Cx-9 signature trim. Great value as well.

      Prime Autotainment I’ve owned Acura and Honda’s for 28 years, though we’re selling our last Honda...it happens to be a Pilot. Both brands have lost their luster on a number of levels.
      Honda has fallen behind Toyota, KIA, Hyundai, and virtually every other brand by not offering surround/Birdeye view, a regular (not push button shifter). Don’t want a kick power gate, proximity works much better.
      Far too much hard plastic compared to other brands. The KIA Sorento and new 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe both have soft touch throughout the front cabin.

    • @thekaysers3301
      @thekaysers3301 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve Wise I think the biggest issue with Honda is that they’re not as bullet proof anymore.. I’ve heard Honda issues with their newer models that you would expect with a Nissan Murano.. but not Honda. Subaru is also on that same train it seems. Reliability has gone down compared to previous generations, even if they are still considered reliable. This is not in my personal experience just speaking to owners.
      It’s nice that Toyota and Hyundai brought new life into their Midsize SUVs. Maybe a safer choice than anything else right now. I chose to go bargain hunting with leasing.. best choice for me right now. Owning a car that isn’t a Toyota is getting a bit risky with today’s technology.

    • @stevewise1656
      @stevewise1656 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Verns The Man you’re right. I believe their most unreliable car is the CRV and when buyers want mid-sized SUV’s, a company can’t blow it like this...This year CRV sales are down 17 percent.
      I knew when they came out with that 1.5 turbo it would be trouble. Honda hadn’t sold turbos until the 2017 CRV.

    Very informative review, Nolan! I personally think the Pilot looks really good with this updated styling. Also, that cabin seems pretty spacious (especially when sitting in that 3rd row)!
    All in all, great work! I can't wait to see your Mazda CX-9 review.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Marcus! I like the new styling too..but I still think it looks more minivan-ish than some others. It certainly was spacious, but than expected.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally agree with you. The Pilot definitely has a minivan-ish design... Especially when placed next to many of its competitors which tend to boast more truck-like appearances. Nevertheless, at least this body styling translates to a fairly spacious cabin for its class. Once again, keep up the great work!

    I think this looks so much better. This pilot was in need of a sport appearance package with the contrast of the black trim on the exterior, update infotainment system, bigger wheels and better proportions. the headlights look so much better and more modern. Now, it needs exposed exhaust tips!

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Prime Autotainment I don’t know if you have done a video on the new CX-5, but could you do one? We have a Honda Accord that is 18 years old and never had a problem but we are considering getting a new cox-5 or Mazda 6

      I have not seen the CX-5 yet but I can try to get one! I’d like to get a review on it too so hopefully soon! That’s awesome your Accord is doing so well at that age. I know there are lots of CX-5 and Mazda 6 reviews out there but I’ve got a buddy that does reviews and we do ours pretty similar. A manufacturer doesn't have the option of putting "soft squishy" seats with seat ventilation and obviously perforated leather is a must. These heated/ventilated seats are always going to be on the firm side by necessity.

    Great review Nolan! Enjoying your videos. I think the 2019 is a step in the right direction over the 2018. I do not like Honda’s push button transmission though. IMO is gimmicky. That being said, I am partial to Subaru, so I would go with the new Ascent.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! It’s nice to see some additions to the 2019 here. I feel the same with the transmission buttons...would take me a bit to get used to if I had it.
      The new Ascent seems very impressive and I love Subaru’s focus on safety and of course stellar AWD. Hopefully I can review one soon. Thanks for the support!

    Thank you for the quick review of the Honda Pilot 2019 model. I don't think there are any full reviews of this mid cycle refresh yet.
    Your review is very comprehensive. Something I would like to see a bit more of (being a techie) is more of the user interface and function from the 7 inch centre dash screen (ie. What does the dash navigation look like). AND if you were using Android auto or Apple Car Play, can some of that function translate to the dash screen? The other component I'd be interested on is how the audio sounds. I know that's subjective but since you get to try out so many vehicles in the same range, its nice to hear what your feedback is. I'm also looking at a midsize SUV.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I apologize I didn’t cover the screen very much. When you use Carplay and Android Auto there are certain apps that it will allow you to use and they look clear and easy to use just on your phone.
      For the music...I’ve tried playing music in different vehicles using different microphones and it just never sounded good enough for me to use. It doesn’t do each system justice. But for the Pilot...it sounds good, but not as good as some others like the abuse system in Mazda CX-9 / Chevy Traverse or JBL system in Toyota. It’s not quite as “full or rich” but still sounds pretty good for a stock stereo. Thank you for the input!
      My pal Bernie has a review of one here and he does cover more in the touchscreen starting at 8:43 - th-cam.com/video/815CIbNYPRY/w-d-xo.html
      Also the guys at Car Confections cover more as well (including Garmin navigation) starting at 12:21 - th-cam.com/video/hxEbdUdfYsE/w-d-xo.html

    I recommend the 6spd, my neighbor got his 9spd replace under warranty 20k miles and now at 40k is doing the same grinding noise.

    • @PrimeAutotainment

      Dang that’s a shame. I’d want to go with the 6 speed as well considering what I’ve heard. They retuned it for this year but who knows how it will turn out. Glad to hear your Accord is doing well!

    Great review man. You’re putting out videos as fast as the big guys!
    It’s a solid choice without a doubt. I’m a little bit biased though, because I have a serious distaste for the rear taillights that Honda uses for the new accord, and this pilot. That incandescent bulb and unattractive LED portion design killed me. I ended up going for the new Tiguan due to an amazingly equipped base model (full LED rear and LED running lights up front, amazing motor as standard)
    All in all it’s all up to the individuals taste. Pretty much every car in this segment is solid, even the pre-refresh Hyundai Santa Fe with its ancient interior. You can’t go wrong, it’s about budget and taste.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! It keeps me busy lol. I feel ya with Honda’s taillights, I’m not a fan of any of them either. I hope you enjoy your Tiguan! I’ve only been in one at an auto show and would love to drive one sometime. Thanks for the input and for watching!

      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much! I’m not 100% sure but I believe the silver panel is removed (or a certain part of it held by fasteners) on last years pilot there was a small part of the bumper that cane off, then the actual hitch receiver hardware came with a replacement piece that had a square hole in it. That was it still looks original and cohesive

    OPINION...Would you buy this or the Hyundai Palisade or the Ford Explorer. I would be looking at upper mid level trims such as an upper trim XLT Ford Explorer

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MattChat56 good question. I’ve been able to spend extended time in the Palisade and Explorer and only limited time in the Pilot. With that being said I’d go for the Palisade. The SEL is a good mid level trim that you can pick and choose some optional features and overall considering the space, features, ergonomics etc..I think it’s the best bang for buck. I would do the Pilot 2nd and Explorer 3rd. I like all of them...but the Explorer had some fit and finish issues which makes me nervous about other things that aren’t visible and the transmission was jerky sometimes. The Pilot is pretty tried and true though with great space and features too. But for every dollar on the table I’d go Palisade right now

    Thanks for mentioning the 9-speed issue! How about reviewing the Honda Ridgeline? I also want your opinion which you like better, 6 vs 9 speed? Which feels better?

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No problem! To answer your other post, there’s not actually a front camera, just the rear parking camera so sadly you can’t use it to help with hills. Some other vehicles offer the surround view but this doesn’t.
      I have a 2018 Ridgeline walkaround, but didn’t drive it. I will hopefully be reviewing a 2019 model sometime early in 2019.
      I would honestly want to 6 speed. Before this refresh, there were some known issues with the 9 speed. They said they made changes to it so only time will tell, but I’d rather be safe with the 6 speed. So the options for a 6 speed tranny are LX, EX, and EX-L.

    How does the interior space compare to the 2013 model. It seems like the Pilot has gotten smaller over the years. I want a full size SUV. At first glance the 2018 Pilot looks like the 2002 CR-V I used to have. That's not good.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it actually has about 1-2 cu ft less behind 3rd row and 3 cu ft less with th seats folded down. Not a huge difference...but smaller. Probably has something today with the shaping of the rear end.
      The actual overall passenger volume is only literally .2 cubic feet more for the 2019 Pilot

    On the Driver Information Interface of the 2019 Pilot, a list of apps appears. I prefer the navigation app displaying a compass and street name. On my 2017 CRV, I was able to have the compass and street name displayed by default.
