As someone who moved to Northampton in 2001, it's interesting to see how much it's changed even in recent times. It's a shame the Grosvenor Centre has so many empty units now, as the old Emporium looked much cooler. Thanks for these videos!
I apologise for not replying sooner! I had left my TH-cam channel alone for a long time. Ill health and life changes, you know. I am now retired in Cornwall, but really appreciate that you took the time to comment! The Northampton videos were some of my earliest and at that time, TH-cam only allowed ten-minute videos which is why it is so fragmented. I would have re-uploaded with a better soundtrack but I lost the original Hi8 tapes! Thanks again! :)
Thanks so much for the videos! I will be relocating from Canada to UK in a few months and my husband has been setting us up in Northampton, so it's very nice to get an idea of the history and architecture.
My sister emigrated to Northampton 30 years ago. She settled there and married I’ve been to visit several times I have to say Northampton is a lovely town with very friendly people👍🏻👏🏻🇮🇪🇬🇧
I apologise for the length of time in replying. Ill health and life cahnges meant that my channel was left to rest for a long time. Thank you for sharing your sister's story! It's always heartwarming to hear about connections and experiences that make a place feel like home. I was not a Northampton native but lived there for 43 years and made a happy life there. I am now retired and living in Cornwall.
I don't know LOL. I think it was partly the novelty of having a camcorder, and partly just to see if I could do it. I enjoyed researching it too, being a bit nerdy when it comes to history. :-) x
@katweg24 Hi Kat. I'm sorry I don't know anything remarkable about 14 Market Square, but it's certainly a fine building. That shop has housed a photographers for around 30 years that I know of, and probably before. However, all that side of the Drapery was once known as The Glovery, so it's entirely possible that your shop made and sold gloves, whilst the upper rooms may have held moneylenders or tailors.
@RobNorthampton The entire town centre was rebuilt around the market square after the Great Fire of Northampton in 1675, when 600 buildings were destroyed. Many of the buildings will have been knocked down and rebuilt at different times by different owners, which is why the town centre has so many different looking stone and brick buildings, but they all add to its character. The Glovery itself goes back to at least the thirteenth century, as shown by an anciant deed wich proclaims: (cont)
It was certainly decades ahead of its time. I still use one every day. The whole concept and vision of it was so great :) I do wonder, if Commodore had done things right, where the computer industry would be today and how advanced it may be. Ah well! *moans*
The Amiga was much better at scrolling graphics than a PC in those days. I also used to hook up a video processor machine, a stereo mixer, mic and Hi8 recorder. It was a major operation! Nowadays, of course, it's all done so easily by the most basic video editing software.
There was a spin-off fashion item of flares called 'loon' pants. The waistband was cut so low and the top half was so tight, you could almost tell a guy's religion! On handsome guys like you, they were a big distraction! :-D
@LASTINLIVE I remember Peacock Way, and the shoe repairers. Its replacement may be more flashy and modern, but always seems empty to me. These vids were made in the 90s, and seem dated even now. Northampton's a different place these days. I rarely visit the town centre. Besides, I don't speak Polish. Malvern is a pretty town, a snapshot of a bygone era, and the hills are great for dog walking and incredible views. I've been a few times, 'cos my partner's from there.
It helps if you move it over to the left side of the page...that is unless you don't want to interfere with the *ahem* aesthetics gracing your channel page.
Laughing out loud, for real JR! I DID see your comment a couple of days ago, and laughed then, but I guess I was just too embarassed to let you know! Happy New Thingy, JR! Rob x
The Seventies has a lot to answer for. Not only did they knock down so many beautiful buildings in the name of progress, they also made us wear flares! And we thought we looked good! Tsk! :-)
Actually those of us who use channel comments a lot have figured out who doesn't. My favorite is brouhajoe. You leave him a comment on his page and he replies to you on his channel page...I tell him "dude, how am I supposed to know you replied to me if you do it on YOUR page and not MINE?" LOL! Happy New Year Rob!
Northampton Was great busy lively Town back in the day I lived there 1963 - 1978 Never seen Town go down hill so much as Northampton I walked around Town centre last Christmas 2019 all I saw empty shops closed down nothing in its place Having said that about my childhood Town I still love visit mum as we all lived in Abington area 74 Birchfield rd stone thro away from old County Ground The Cobblers proud to say old Hotel Ender
There was no intent to deceive anyone. My Hi8 tapes that I filmed the original footage have 1992 written on them, and I'm guessing I wouldn't have written that at the time if it wasn't 1992. There are of course, photos added to the footage which were taken many years previously, and were used to illustrate how the town had changed. For instance, there's a photo of the New Theatre which was demolished to build Primark's. Thanks for commenting! :-)
lol, now that does sound a tad uncomfortable ;) I'm afraid I'd need to head down the gym before trying to get into a pair of those...that sounds more like the major operation than the video editing ;)
The problem is nationwide, I'm afraid. If you were a Pole, and you knew you could earn 8 times the wages you earned in Poland, wouldn't you move here too? It's the price we pay for a 'Free Europe', whatever that means :-)

Looks like most of the houses / buildings have been around since 1675 too... Knock them down and build modern structures. Dang that "listed" status. It's why the UK is known for ugly buildings.
@@RobNorthampton a perfect example of what a "listed" status does is st. Edmunds hospital. It's listed so can't be knocked down ... So it has to fall down by itself. That land could be used for a modern apartment block.

Thank you for adding knowledge to the history! I didn't move here until 1983, so much of the so-called improvements were already in place.
My pleasure. And thanks very much for commenting. I hope your move goes smoothly, and that you settle well in the UK.

LOL Thanks for watching, Melissa! :-)

Look at it now
It is sad to see the demise of so many town centres. I don't know what the answer is. :/

Haha! You're funny AND cute! Some guys just have it all! (sigh) LOL
Tory scum Northampton, rip
Ah, the political drama in Northampton could rival any soap opera! Let’s hope for a plot twist that brings some positive change!

I'm sure the old buildings must cost a fortune to heat with the recent hike in energy prices! :)
