    Excellent video, and (to me, at least) reassuring to get the info from someone in the trade as opposed to some random "men's fashion tips" dude parroting something he heard probably from another random "men's fashion tips" dude.

    I was under the impression that a shoe cream is preferable over a polish. The explanation being that a wax doesn't penetrate the skin as well as a cream and actually dries it out.
    Right? Wrong?

    • @frankieboyo1969
      @frankieboyo1969 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True a cream is preferable over a polish (mainly hard wax)/ Hard waxes only block moisture coming out the exterior of the leather. It won't actively dry the leather out It's just that it doesn't add moisture and won;t stop moisture being lost via the interior of the shoe. If you leave shoes unworn for ages without conditioning them they'll dry out, much like hidebound books in a library.

    • @paulm2467
      @paulm2467 ปีที่แล้ว

      He uses a cream first then polishes it and says that if you’re happy with that level of shine you can stop there however if you want shinier shoes you need wax. They are different products for different purposes, cream is mainly for nourishment with pigment, wax polish is mainly for shine with less pigment. The cream is much more important as it’s what nourishes and revitalises the leather but they aren’t ‘either or’ products, sometimes you want one or the other and for a full treatment, (once or twice a year if you rotate your shoes), use a cleaner then both, cream first then polish.

      Those are ready to wear and cost about 1000 pounds. And you can wear them in rain. Not just like rubber boots but nothing wrong in going when raining. If it's really wet all day long take Lobb's galoshes over and have no problem anyway.

    You know the old adage "" buy cheap and buy twice"

  • @LegateMalpais
    @LegateMalpais 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ah yes - you need two of these antiquated shoe pairs, because every other day one of them needs to "rest".
    This is... museum-grade snobbery akin to the idiocy of having LPs; where the time-consuming and very restrictive use and low quality due to dated technology becomes a part of the hobby itself.
    And then there's the usual "this is good, old-school, not like the throw-away society of today". Right, spendinh what... 10x more man-hours on manufacture of these things, then paying just as much more for them, and then having to waste time maintaining them or they fail... is somehow better. Right.
    It's 2022, not 1922.

    I use only WOLY shoe care products on my prized John Lobbs, and occasionally, I'll use the Saphir show cream which gives a nice gloss, and follow up with Cordovan which intensifies the black colour.

    Can anyone please help to explain the differences between mink oil, saddle soap, shoe creme, and normal kiwi shoe polish?

    • @i.o.3563
      @i.o.3563 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +jimmypetelol saddle soap - cleaning product. Very much like ordinary soap for hands. You use it to cleanse the shoe. Mink oil is an animal fat that is not very much recommended on expensive shoes as after using it you will feel problems with shining the shoes. The difference between Kiwi and Lobb shoe polish is like.. well Lobb's is just a premium quality one, just like their shoes: formula contain higher quality components. Cream is more liquid form of wax polish and is better for nourishment, gives more colour. Wax polish provides more shine and protection. Both are nourishing and you may use just one or both. First you apply cream in that case.

    It's my understanding that John Lobb is the very top of the food chain for mens shoes...and that there are 2 types of manufacture, the first and absolute top of the line, known as "bespoke", completely custom made in every respect, and secondly "ready to wear", also hand made but not custom, but still fabulous shoes...and is it true, that the bare minimum for any of their shoes, starts at about $1000..US...plus let me add as well, this was a wonderful tutorial on proper shoe care...well done indeed

    • @KenChiwo
      @KenChiwo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      daniel lack Well of course there are many more brands in England that are as good as John Lobb (i.e, Eward Green,G Cleverly, etc). Their ready to wear line consist of at least two lines, the standard that start at a minimum of $1000US and the prestige line which starts at $1700US. Bespoke however, starts at $6000US minimum for the first pair, but the consecutive pairs will cost less. Re-soling these shoes are a bit of a pain regarding price.

      Timothy Chan it depends on your shoes' value. If it less than $200 i dont recommend resole. Otherwise you can resole any times you like if the upper still hold up well

    • @marksshoereviews6028
      @marksshoereviews6028 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend sending the shoes back to the original manufacturer for resoles. I read a story about someone who sent their shoes back to Loake for a fourth resole - they replied with a letter advising that unfortunately the shoes could not be repaired...plus a brand new pair of shoes in the same style for no extra cost!
