    Buying commercial sliding barn-door hardware can get expensive. And, if you're like us, often times material for a project is expensive enough. In Woodsmith #237, we built a rustic Sliding Barn-Door Cabinet utilizing shop made hardware. Here, project designer John Doyle walks us through how to make your own high-quality, DIY barn-door hardware for your projects.

    Thank you very much. Glad your video showed up on my TH-cam recommendations. I've been looking up barn door hardware and barn door building and installation videos the past couple of days. And the ones I watched involved well over $1,000 dollars worth of tools and machines. By contrast, this video is down to earth and shows tremendous resourcefulness to accomplish pretty much the same results.

    While I might not have been that interested in this particular project, I do appreciate the longer format tip. For a long time these tips have been really quick/trivial or showing off how someone designed a knitted cozy for their drill press.

      I was kind of getting the same vibe with some of the tips we were sending out. A lot of quicker readers' tips may be interesting, but not real practical for most woodworkers. We'll try to mix in more of the longer informational videos like this one in the future. I do like the knitted drill press cozy idea though... we may have to use that one. :)

    Love Woodsmith! I was however skeptical about that vise mount and sure enough was confirmed when you had to hold onto the vise as you hack sawed :) Seriously though, as a wood/metal worker replacing a bench top I'd love to see something usable for both. Probably something on YT somewhere.....

    • @WoodsmithShowandmagazine
      @WoodsmithShowandmagazine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah the metal vise was not very secure in our workbench vise... I probably should have just clamped the plywood platform down to the bench. Bad choice in hindsight. After this video was shot I suggested we design a workbench/cart/workstation solely for the purpose of metalworking because it really should be kept separate from woodworking so the metal filings and shavings don't get embedded into your wood projects.

      Actually, we have a video of how our Shop Craftsman finished this cabinet here: th-cam.com/video/kB6iOJncgHg/w-d-xo.html
      Basically, we used General Finishes Antique White Milk Paint, then a clear coat on top of that (like spray lacquer or General Finishes High Performance Top Coat), and then wiped on General Finished Pitch Black Glaze into the cracks, crevices and dings and wiped off any excess. You can also do a little sanding and wear-through on the finish. When you get the get the look you want seal it all with a couple layers of the clear coat.

    • @WoodsmithShowandmagazine
      @WoodsmithShowandmagazine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On our cabinet the upper face frame rail is 3 1/8" wide so that is the distance from the door openings to the underside of the cabinet top. The distance from the top of the metal runner is 1 7/8" from the underside of the top of the cabinet. Hopefully, that answers your question. Let me know if you have any more.

    I only dabble in light & small woodworking projects when I have to. Metal machining has been my main hobby for almost 40 yrs. Hopefully you wont mind some constructive criticism since you were attempting to demonstrate how to shape and form metal. Your methods obviously worked, but technically there a bit off. A cheap jewelers hand saw would have allowed much easier cutting to the line with very little file work to do. Even easier would be if a variable speed scroll saw is available then proper metal cutting blades are made for them. Dialing the speed right down and a light touch "IS" needed though for thicker cross sections of material due to the blades being a bit fragile.When filing and not lifting the file on the back stroke but dragging it back across the metal that simply dulls the teeth. Filing an outside radius is much easier with quicker & smoother results when you file along the length of the radius and not across the material. You roll the file to follow the radius. That bend could have all been done in and on the bench vise with the only addition of a short steel rod matching the required radius, maybe a pair of vise grips for a bit of help, and a hammer. Soft wood even SW ply makes a poor former for shaping metal other than maybe light gauge sheet metal. It compresses too easily so the bends aren't an even continuous radius. So doing it in the vise would have produced a tighter and better formed radius. If you do have to use a hack saw for anything? It's a common mistake to only use a few inches of the blade. The job always goes a lot quicker when you use most of the blade length you paid for on each stroke. That also helps to even out the wear on the blade and keeps the blade thickness evenly worn from friction along it's length.
    Understandably and unfortunately I see numerous and faulty methods shown in every wood working magazine out there when the subject of working with metal comes up. Your wood workers without a long back round of using the material so it's of course logical and not surprising. Frankly if I was the owner of any wood working magazine I'd find one of the thousands of old school retired machinist that started out learning how to hand work metal to keep on a small yearly retainer to double check any methods before there presented to the public. For the little that might cost it would well worth the extra credibility. It was a very a good video with a few minor faults so it still gets a thumbs up.

    • @WoodsmithShowandmagazine
      @WoodsmithShowandmagazine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for all of your thoughtful insight on the subject of metal working. Obviously I have more to learn on the subject, so the tips are appreciated. :)

    • @turningpoint6643
      @turningpoint6643 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WoodsmithShowandmagazine Your more than welcome. Filing metal by the ones who have a great deal of experience is almost an art form. Tom Lipton on his Oxtools channel here on YT did a series a few years ago about building a bar stock welded reproduction of a Wilton Baby Bullet vise that demonstrates what can be done with some simple crude files and a bit of time. And exactly like wood working, hand tool metal working takes a great deal of skill, knowledge & craftsmanship. Just like high quality wood working it's a whole lot tougher than it looks. :-) However wanting to learn more to get better at it is without a doubt the best attitude to have.
