  • A girlfriend of mine really wanted a double sliding barn door so that means I finally got a chance to put together a build video to go along with my written tutorial.
    You can find the step by step tutorial on how I built my original door here: wilkerdos.blogs... Even though it's a different door, the steps are pretty much the same.
    Follow and support me here:
    Facebook at / wilkerdos
    Instagram: / wilker_dos
    Patreon: www.patreon.co...
    Website: www.wilkerdos....
    Then here is the information on the BrainPick: It is set for this upcoming Tuesday (December 2nd) at 9:30 EST. www.iliketomake...

    Beautiful!! As we watched, I told my husband "Pshh, she has done this stuff probably her whole life, look how good she is!" He agreed. We were both shocked to read on your blog your date marker of 2013! You are an inspiration :)

    Great Video! My daughter loves horses. Her room is full of horse art so a barn door just made sense for her closet. We have worked on the project together with the help of your video! Thank you!

      Coming into this 5 years later but OMG YES! Your daughter is super lucky. I essentially grew up with a mom who played the helpless card too often and I have distinct memories of her says “oh why would I do it? I can get a man to!” I’m 34 and learned helplessness is HARD to overcome. But now that my husband and I have separated and I am in the house the endless half finished projects, I’m actually having to learn to do things myself. Can’t afford to hire anyone! Like, I used a drill properly for the first time today. 😬😬😬

    a few months ago i attempted to help my wife build a simple book case. After she got frustrated with the project and me. It ended with her saying that woodworking is for guys. So i sat her down and had her watch your videos and after a few hrs she was ready to give it another go. It turned out great with little help from me. She loves your channel now, and has more "projects" for me and her. Keep up the good work and thanks for the new hobby my wife has to share with my love and passion of woodworking.

Secondly the size of your work shops is amazing, so jealous. Great video though..... might make just the one door and have it sliding open rather than hinged. UK subscriber. X

    April - great video. I am going to do a single sliding barn door but I'm going to use a reclaimed door. One thing I didn't see - do you have some kind of brace or track to at the bootom of the door keep it from swinging out away from the wall?

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope I don't. I thought I would include one when I was first building mine, however after I got it on the wall I didn't think it was necessary. If you have kids, it probably will be. :)

    • @LeeMcNeil
      @LeeMcNeil 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +April Wilkerson Thanks for the quick response. Yes I will probably do a track or something on the bottom. I don't have little kids but I have a dog that would probably run through it. I love that you built your own track and rollers. Some of the ones I see online are ridiculously expensive. Where did you find the rollers? I haven't really looked but are they available at like Lowes or Home Depot?

Also I must commend you on your use of safety gear , it's something that a lot of crafts people forget or ignore , but we only have two sets of eyes , ears and hands so we gotta look after them if we want to keep on doing what we enjoy .

    I. LOVE. THIS! Wish I could just keep liking it all day long...
    I've been a fan of sliding barn doors for years. As a real estate broker, I've seen quite a few installs. You barn doors look excellent, you did a nice, clean, tasteful install, and they look perfect in that home. For some reason, it's something that you tend to see in the higher priced homes. Thanks for showing folks that it's something that's within reach of just about everybody.

    Fantastic! Been watching a lot of episodes of 'Fixer Upper' here in the UK, and these caught my eye on one makeover. To have a fraction of your skills........but I'm 55 and glad I've been a bit of a basic DIY give-it-a-go-er over the years (out of necessity!), hence I'm sitting watching a very talented young lady make sliding barn doors rather than how to apply make up for mature ladies ha, ha!

    April,
    You are getting to be quite the craftsman! I don't know how many other metal guy's watch your vids, but as a contractor, I have been working with both metal and wood for over 40 years. Done both rough and finish work in both genres.
    I really am impressed, and even though I would have done things a bit different, you did an awesome job!! I especially liked when you accomplish a segment, and were happy, you would look at the camera and smile!! Hey guess what? We did too!!! Next time you need any custom washers or spacers, or special metal doo da's, get in touch. Be my pleasure to help if I can!

    Gorgeous! I built a set of these for my shop a couple of years ago but they were not near as nice as yours. I got a couple of bifold doors from Habitat for Humanity and joined them together with pocket hole screws. Added strips of OSB salvaged from a job site. Sanded, routed, added handles and hung from a closet door slider covered by a valence. Total cost: about $100. Wish I had seen yours first.

    Nice job. A few hints. Top rail cut in center so you can have ends up 1/4 - 1/2" so doors close by them selves ( gravity)
    Any good farm store has hardware for the bottom of the door to keep it from swinging out look at that for a solution
    But again a very nice set of doors

    Really great project April. My favorite to date. I want to commend you for clamping the metal strips down before drilling on your drill press. Very safe practice. I am in no way a member of the safety police but in my forty plus years in machine shop work I've seen countless injuries from people thinking they could always hold metal strips by hand. Anyway wonderful build.

      Thanks Donnie. Oh yeah, I've actually had a piece of wood spin around and knock me in my knuckles before. That taught me real quick to clamp things down. ; )

    Looks sharp! Its funny and upsetting to read comments on sights like these, here we have someone who works very hard at producing a video for us to watch and learn from... for free! The only comments(or thumbs) that should be written(expressed) are
    ones of gratitude. So, Thank you for all of your hard work you share with us. :)
