  • Don't want to build your own Barn Door Hardware? Here is a link to a good budget set of hardware.
    amzn.to/3VJpq50
    Square Splinter version of the popular DIY Rustic Barndoor Hardware project complete with how to make your bolts and hardware look similar to old hammered steel rivets. Super cheap and easy DIY project at under $10 for the whole kit including the rail. No need for bending or welding any part of the pieces. Even the Rustic Hardware is optional and can just be painted black instead. Complete parts list below you can pickup at any hardware or big box store.
    Its 2022 and prices are crazy! Although you can still build these fairly in-expensively you sure cant do it for $10 unless you have scrap material. Thank you for understanding.

    Parts List:
    Rail: 1 each Appropriate length of 1/8’ x 1.5” width steel
    bar/strapping
    7 each or appropriate number of ¼”x20 carriage bolts with ¼”
    washers and nuts. (I used 7 on a 6’ span.
    7 each ¾”x ¾” long cut pieces of PVC pipe for spacers.
    Barndoor Hardware:
    4 each - cutoff pieces of steel strapping at 7” long
    4 each - Plastic clothes line pulleys
    4 each - ¼”x20x2” carriage bolts for wheels
    8 each - ¼”x20x1” carriage bolts for mounting to door
    16 each - ¼” washers for door mounting
    8 each - ¼” washers for wheel mounting
    8 each - additional ¼” nuts for mounting bolts to metal bracket before wheels go on.
    4 each - ¼” Nylon lock nuts for wheel hardware assembly.
    I also painted the rail and brackets black over the blackener. I used the blackener for more of a "primer" in case the paint gets scratched it wont show through as bare metal.

      You probably shouldn’t be watching videos on DYI projects if you don’t have any tools. Borrow your neighbors drill and $5 hacksaw. That’s all you need. 👍🏼.

      @@williamlobur6181 i do apologize for the snide reply and I am really glad you followed up with a response. I typically am pretty good in catching on to sarcasm because i use it daily, but apparently not yesterday. 😆 I am just worn OUT with people and the "how 'bout all those tools" remarks. lol Seriously, why do people watch videos on DIY projects if they don't have tools? Do they also watch Bob Ross videos and complain they don't have paintbrushes?? (no, I can't compare myself with Bob Ross...) Thanks again for the reply and thank you for the support. I hope you recover to 100% from your surgery.

      @@SquareSplinter 1st. Good video, however, It's just that you're billing the project as under $10.00.
      I have all the tools, and then some, so it's not a tool issue, on that, I agree with you. The materials are more than $10.00 thought. Te steel will run about $15- the steel blackner (acid) is about $9.00.
      The best part here is the use of the acid to color the steel and bolts, as painting leads to chiping, plus you're really protecting the steel from rust. It's a nice project at the end of the day.

    I just went to HD and went to buy one for a 5ft door opening and the flat bar of the sturdy kind cost $25 alone. Also pulley wheels cost around $5 each... All together with nuts and bolts you are looking to spend just the same amount maybe $20 cheaper than ordering one off amazon. If you are considering the hardware DIY you probably made the door as well so weight is a huge factor. I'm currently invested in this project and this is the part where I need options for making hardware. I would be doing this concept on a small closet door. Oh yeah and tool haha after you buy all this you need to make it. After watching this video I've tried and couldn't keep it under $10 but I will be taking this concept for a much smaller door. Huge thumbs up!!

    What an excellent video! I learned so many new things here. Looks easy and I've always wanted to do make a barn door but the hardware was too pricey. The quality of your video was professional. Every detail shown. I appreciated seeing the difference between painted and blackened metals, and also how to clean metal before blackening. I'm usually very critical of DIY videos as so many things are missing or could be done better. I could not find one thing to improve. Its perfect. Thank you for a very well made video! Subscribed. By the way, you have beautiful hands!

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did make a stop. All I did was add a small piece of the metal strapping cutoffs to the end of the rail so that it stuck up just about a 1/4” above the rail. For the small doors I used it for it worked really well. 🙏🏼

    Great video, very helpful. A hack saw, file and any old drill with a metal rated bit should do the job if you don’t have the tools used in this video FYI. Do you use “stops” to keep the door from falling off the end of the rail? If so please explain how you made/installed them.

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First off, thanks for the positive words. Appreciate it. As far as the little stops I made, they were super simple. I just took a little piece of scrap plastic and screwed it onto the end of the rail so it stuck up just about an 1/8” of an inch higher than the rail. They were small doors so it worked great. Hope that makes sense. 👍🏼

    People need to learn to be creative and improvise. Use an old bedframe angle iron as your rail. Theres probably one in your basement or your neighbors garbage. You dont need to buy each individual piece retail for God sake. Learn to accumulate pieces for your upcoming projects by repurposing. Rome wasnt built in a day, nor did they they buy each brick. Use what you have and what you beg, borrow, or steal. Thats what makes these projects fun! Great job... rock on!

    It doesn’t have to be all one way or the other regarding tools. Piece together a shop a few things at a time as you build skills, learn how to make things work. People who like to make things don’t just do it to save 50$ on the barn door project. People make things because it’s fun and builds a measure of self reliance into daily life. The financial payoff comes as you get skilled enough to fix your own plumbing, do serious carpentry projects on your place, or whatever. Saving the 100$ per hour for a plumber adds up to real money really quick. Pays for tools really quick. But you need to know what you’re doing and that only comes from investing time and paying attention. Very satisfying as you get on your way. That’s what this is really about imho.

    So, did you mount the rail it slides on to a piece of wood then put the wood on the was;;? Great vid, i need help with that part. Second, you think i could put a 45 on a 2x4 and roll it on that?

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a small piece of CPVC tubing that was 3/4” and cut it to about an inch long to use it as a stand-off for the bolts to hold rail on. Does that make sense?

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Orlando Zapata I honestly am not 100% sure. On the bottom though, it doesn’t matter, just personal preference on how you want to mount your doors. The hike for mounting the pulley I just drilled it so the top of the pulley was even with the top of the metal. 👍🏼

    Hi can you give me the proper order you assemble the wheel in? Looks like bolt, metal bar, washer, nut, wheel, washer, lock nut?

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Hadfield that would for sure work. The nut on the back of the bar is just to space the wheel away from the bar. You could add another nut or washer to adjust that spacing.

    How did you mount the rail onto the wall ?

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was able to use bolts because the rails were mounted on a small cabinet. I used small cutoffs of painted 1” pvc pipe as little spacers for the bolts to make the rail stick out the correct distance. Hope this helps. 👍🏼

    Good Job, some complains about the 10$ budged, well it might change, but then again, the video is not about 10$, it is DIY video. I payed 4.50 for each metal pulley (2), $5.75 for metal rail (20 feet long) $3 for the paint, $1.50 in bolt and nuts.
    Was that vs $199.00 for the complete set. How did you attach the rail to the wall? Looks hex head bolt and not screws what hold the rail.
    Thank you

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Juan Jose Ramirez thanks for the positive feedback and yes, you are correct the video was really just to show people they can do things their own way that is much less expensive then buying. Lesson learned to be careful how you title videos. 😉. The tail can be attached multiple ways. I was able to use small bolts and some pieces of PVC pipe cut to short lengths and painted black. You could easily use screws and do the same thing. You could even use small blocks of wood to space the rail out from cabinet. 👍🏼

    This is great! I'm curious how the balance on this is when hanging? Does it angle inward towards the wall at the bottom or does it hang pretty straight? Wondering if it will scrape the wall when moving.

    • @SquareSplinter
      @SquareSplinter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has been working well for all this time. I think you could pretty easily manipulate how it hangs on these small doors by slightly shimming the rail up or down a degree or 2.
