I just want to wish EVERYONE who follows Doug and his family aswell all the best in 2022! It's why I love his page so much. We've had some tough times lately(that's everyone not just me) and that's why this page matters! You've got a great guy here, who if not everyday, every other day has mountains of information for me! Unleashes my inner Nerd for just a breather in this temperamental world, I clear the air and my mind. DOUG RELIEVES STRESS for us! He says, "Hey ya'll, welcome back!" And it's always good being back, Getting interested, Getting the gears spinning for what WE want to contemplate. It's not about the job/economy/politics/the real world. It's just about really great music and tools we can use to inspire our own writing!🎵🖤🖤🖤🎵
Congratulations on everything Doug, and continued growth in the new year!👏👏👏👏👏

It's pretty badass (and baffling - to me) how so many people within the last couple of years are finally getting an introduction to Tool. I bought Undertow on my 13th birthday - which was 12 days after its release - and they have been my favorite band since. This might sound weird, but I actually get enjoyment out of watching people react to Tool for the first time. And as for most of Maynard's lyrics, they're written so the listener gets their own interpretation. Find an interpretation that's relevant to you (when applicable). Try to be a better person today than you were yesterday. Doug, I am now a fan of your channel lol. So keep going. The more you listen, the more you'll appreciate Tool's music.

Being a 20+ year metalhead/guitar player, Tool has been one of the most significant reasons for me to continue listening and practicing various kinds of metal pieces, extensively - Adam Jones’ tone quality, instrumental prowess and musicianship/composure had been a great influence and had real impact on my own style (if something like that even exists 😊). So I must say, “The Pot” is the ultimate piece that the band has ever written; let me tell you why:
Tool is almost always revered for their unmatched poly-rythmic wisdom and utmost harmony which manisfest as insane odd-time groupings that feel as if they are creating “divine order” out of “infernal chaos” 😊. Yet this might sometimes cause a kind of progressive divergence in the form of failing to maintain the unnatural hype they initially elevate at the start - mainly in the below songs I humbly practiced and listened on many occasions:
    - Lateralus (Lateralus): Too much attention to mathematical accuracy overshadows musical prowess.
    - Parabola (Lateralus): Cannot live up to one of the greatest intros of metal music history.
    - Schism (Lateralus): Even the extraordinary drum-final is not able to save the heavily descending hype.
    - Vicarious (10000 Days): Depletes mind-blowing riff structure too soon.
    - Jambi (10000 Days): Fails to maintain the feel following a masterfully composed heavy section.
    - Sober (Undertow): Dominated by intoxicating-but-in-a-positive-way vocal sections.
    - Forty-six and Two (Aenima): Only slightly shorter in time, but it’s there.
You might notice, as a result of said divergence, the songs feel a bit “longer” than they supposed to - but then again, these are my own assessments and opinions; so that feeling might be only my concern. Among these masterpieces, I believe only “The Pot” does not suffer from mentioned adversities/conflicts: It maintains all the feel and mesmerizing progression introduced at the beginning, embracing us with carefully dispersed interludes and finishes with a diminished-measure crescendo, summing up a perfectly refined progressive-metal masterpiece.
So, from the bottom of my heart, i thank you Doug - for reacting to and analyzing the song. Keep up the good work man!

Where do you reside, Doug? Tool has been touring for awhile, doing so now as a matter of fact.
As you know, Tool is a musician's band. Almost every musician I have known (being one myself for 40+ yrs) appreciates the level of musicianship from Tool. This particular song is fun with Maynard having a contradictory time signature at the beginning along with Danny's usage of various polyrhythms throughout a relative straightforward 4/4 song for them. This may be their best "pop" song. Great intro of the band to others. Peace.

greetings, m'man... You may be interested to note: that "phased meter" (meters of different lengths overlaying, and overlapping, and phasing through each other all over the place) sound, which is certainly a big (If not the biggest) Tool mainstay, is derived directly from "King Crimson"... a shining example of that about which I speak would be the piece titled "frame by frame" on the 'crimson album "discipline": clear as day at several points- one guitar is doing a seven, then a unison track splits off, throwing in a bar of six every other time, and cycles all the way through like that... so now you've got this long cycle... um, Well... thirteen "measures" long if you were the one doing the seven... If you were the other one... one could think about it any number of ways; take your pick, I don't care.
the aforementioned album, plus the 'crimson albums "beat" and "three of a perfect pair" are actually where most of the obvious examples are.
the only example of this type of rhythmic scheme in nature that I'm aware of would be the Balinese Gamalon Orchestra. perhaps a tiny bit in the music of South India. of course, there is the big one- most of the music of Africa and derivatives thereof... which as you will know is a vast landscape; a fact that is difficult to overstate- "poly-meter" is usually experienced in much shorter cycles though. but in a way that's the only technical difference.
The Gamalon- I think that's where Fripp (of King Crimson) said he got it... Or else I just imagined that part because it's the only obvious place... It's been years.
I speak of this "origin of "that Tool sound"" as fact, simply because Maynard explained all of this in detail at a concert that I was at. Maynard elaborated with hyperbole and props to the "elder band", who had in fact just opened for them. yes, you read that correctly... a lot of people thought that was odd. It was however strangely fitting... or perhaps not "strangely" just that I can't explain it clearly myself. It's in keeping with Fripps' philosophy of understating himself I guess. at the time (the cretaceous), as a crazy fan of both bands, I could hardly believe my luck at seeing such a show...
    Peace be upon you, sir.

Adam Jones loves that drop D tuning ergo much Tool D minor. I feel it is a kind of limitation to his playing, but he does it quite well. If you are going to partake this is the song to do it to. Try Passage to Bangkok by Rush (2112) another weed friendly song. Tool would sometimes open their concert with the opening Passage to Bankok riff.

So glad I found your channel, looking for Rush's La Villa Strangiato videos. Don't usually watch reaction vids, but after seeing you have done some of my favorite bands (Tool, Pink Floyd, Rush), I've been watching those for the past day. I know you get tons of requests, and I don't expect you to do this soon , if at all -- but I would LOVE to hear you breakdown "Flood" off of Tool's Undertow album, although your ear may be better off hearing "Triad" off of Lateralus for me and everyone else -- It seems to be many variations on the use of triads. I would be amazed to learn that it hadn't been recommended to you numerous times already, with your skills and abilities.Hope Tool Tuesdays remain a thing. Will check out Stravinksi's "Rite of Spring" like you advised in another video. Perhaps you will help me "Broaden my horizons" -- as many friends of mine note when they see my 50 Pink floyd discs and complete collections of Tool, Led Zeppelin, Rush et al. THANK YOU. Btw, this is comment # 420!

Love this song. It's the one I usually play to people who have never heard Tool before, as I find it's one of their most instantly accessible tracks. Maynard's vocal performance on this is awesome.

Just saw Tool last night in Tacoma. They played this track, and it was off the wall. Highly highly recommend seeing them on this current tour if you can. Thirty plus years into their career, and they still sound on fire. And the setlist this round is something else.

I was so lucky to see them in Spokane right before all the shutdowns. Now I'm jealous they're touring and won't be seeing them now. Guess I can't complain too much, I've seen them like 7 times...

The tones that Adam and Justin are able to create with their instruments are absolutely astounding. I strongly recommend checking out Russian Circles if you want to hear another group that creates huge soundscapes. "Mladek" or "Afrika" are great examples of their versatility.

The solo is a bass solo, playing bending harmonics, through an amp with distortion, a wah pedal and some feedback. Reminds me of Cliff Burton (R.I.P.). You might notice the absence of the bass in the rythym during this section. Actually two sections when he does the "Waaaa-ooooo" part right before the big break. Badass. \m/

I absolutely love this video; and your channel. I too recently discovered cannabis as a way to help manage my chronic pain, so when I saw that you also partake I was surprised!
I have watched your channel since your Octavarium reaction and it has really helped an over analyzing progressive metal weirdo like myself get through a very difficult time. Thank you for all that you do!
